One early warning sign of Midoriya's character is how right after the battle trials he rushes to partially tell Bakugou about OFA. So it's not in the heat of the moment, and with how it's done it's not to call out Bakugou's main character syndrome. It's that he's placating Bakugou. Bakugou is just the perfect metaphor for Deku and the hero's society issues, that they will not acknowledge that they/ it are just shit. That it is all about the glory, and they aren't going to solve any of it because they are allergic to the idea of accountability. And that once someone has the hero label on them, they can be the shittiest human being imaginable because they won't be held accountable. And this was before the series started constantly kissing Bakugou's ass

Also I hate Deku becoming a teacher, but the biggest point for me is that he's only a teacher, and no one else in 1A didn't become a hero, even with them saying oh the need for heroes went down, none of them opted out. As I've put on my main blog, Deku knows Hatsume Mei, and Melissa Shield, both characters who are eager to create support gear, why didn't he contact them in 8 years. Both All Might in his last fight, and Mirio with Overhaul have proven heroes can fight quirkless. So what the fuck was he doing? It certainly wasn't working out. Why the fuck was he waiting for someone to gift-wrap him the opportunity again? He never considered any other career while he was being bullied and told no for being quirkless, so what the fuck. You can't just choose to be a teacher, it does require a degree unless UA is just 100% disregarding that entirely.

And with it being a teaching job specifically, I'm going to say it. DEKU SUCKS AT EXPLAINING ANYTHING. In the whole series the closest we ever see him show any interest in 'teaching' anything is the sports festival when he offers to give Uraraka a plan to beat Bakugou, which she declines so no idea if it was any good. But start of the Endeavor agency arc, he overcomplicates and mumbles what he's trying to do with his quirk. It's not what he's saying that's complicated, it's that he's a shit explainer. When he realizes that concentrating all of OFA in a tiny area is a bad idea he announces a metaphor with zero context, during a meal. If it was just his thought process, I wouldn't care, but it's that he's doing it constantly when he's talking to people.

I actually plan on writing a comparison between the teacher ending of My Hero Academia and Assassination Classroom because holy fuck they did it infinitely better

Deku, who was too much, not his, and undeniably off limits to begin with.

Hey y’all! I’ve gotten a lot of fic finding requests in my inbox over the past few months, (Yay!) so I'm excited to help y’all and discover/rec some great new fics in the process!

In order to make things a smidge easier on myself, I’m making this post to clarify a few things that are helpful to include when submitting a Fic Finder ask:

AO3 Only. I don't look for or read fic elsewhere (i.e. Wattpad, etc.) and am very, very familiar with their website, so I prefer to only rec fics that are posted to Archive of our Own. If you can't remember what platform you read a fic on, just know that there is a possibility that I may not be able to find it.

Details, details, details! If you can list specific dialogue, scenes, settings, plot points that stuck out to you these are all very helpful. For example, great details to include would be something like: "Oneshot Coffee Shop!AU where Pro Hero Katsuki falls in love with Quirkless Barista Izuku at first sight and asks Izuku to make him Deku's favorite drink every morning. He keeps coming back even though he hates the taste of coffee. There was a lot of fluff and pining and it had a happy ending where they moved in together. Bakugou finds out that Izuku knew he didn't like the drink the whole time and kept notes, making it a little different each day until he did."

Include your @. It is understandable that you may not want your username included in posts! However the reason I request this is so that I can message you if I am having issues finding your fic or have questions while searching for it. - as an AU after Bakugou tells Midoriya to jump off a roof and hope for a quirk in a next life or whatever it is he says along those lines, and after he meets All Might, he basically wakes up and realises how poorly he's been treated. He tells his mum and decides he wants to transfer school's which he does do.

- here he makes a friend, one shinsou Hitoshi, a kid who's bullied for having a villain quirk

- so we have midoriya, who admires or is fascinated by all quirks and heroes and so isn't scared of Shinsou, and Shinsou who has never had someone treat him kindly

- Midoriya helps Shinsou train for UA so they both get in the hero course. He uses his analysis to help Shinsou find a fighting style he can work with and they learn together

- Shinsou is the first to believe or at least tell him he doesn't need a quirk to be a hero and basically helps him build up his self esteem

- so when Deku gets to UA he's slightly more confident

He also decides to just ignore Bakugou and acts like he never knew him

Bakugou does not take this well but he's not as angry about Deku being there in general, he's still annoyed he has a quirk, but more than anything he's angry that he left, just transferred schools without a word. He hasn't quite accepted yet that that is on him in a way so he's mad at Deku

Especially because without Deku he was actually quite lonely

And then Deku has a friend in Shinsou which makes Bakugou quite jealous

so they still have their rivalry

and then at some point, quite by accident and without noticing, they start to become friends, or as close to that as Bakugou can have at this point. They talk out their issues, Bakugou finally acknowledges and takes responsibility for his own actions of mistreating Midoriya, and he acknowledges and truly realises how wrong what he said to Midoriya about jumping off the roof was

Also, yes, when one of them wakes up from a nightmare at 3 am they do call the other . They've known each other longer than anyone else, been through serious shit, know things about each other their other classmates don't. This causes a strange kind of trust where, even if they don't get along, they know they can call the other

Bakugou still has issues and still falls back into old patterns because it's hard to learn that but he's trying and he does grow to see Midoriya (and some of their other classmates) as equals.

Also Shinsou knows Deku used to be quirkless, was bullied by Bakugou and got All Might's quirk. So, he's not the biggest fan of Bakugou and doesn't fully approve of him and Midoriya's budding friendship. He's a protective friend.

The dekusquad (minus maybe Todoroki, who may ot may not understand the big deal) are also kinda cautious due to how Bakugou treats Midoriya at first.

But, as he makes steps to improve and become a better person and hero (he doesn't want to be like Endeavour, he still overheard Todoroki and Deku's conversation), the Dekusaquad slowly start to warm up to him.

Shinsou still doesn't because he knows how bad the bullying was but Deku swears him to secrecy, mainly to help protect the secret of him having All Might's quirk at first.

Look I'll be real with you, I like redemption but it's not gonna easy. This is Bakugou. Bakugou is a lot of things and prideful is the biggest one. Somehow he also manages to be insecure (maybe not the right word but I feel like, despite acting strong, he often feels weak, and when he feels particularly weak (like after he was kidnapped by the League), he tends to lash out. There's also his need to be the best, because it's expected of him, because he has a strong quirk and, for a long time, he was the strongest, the most powerful of his peers. The big fish in a small pond effect but not entirely because his quirk is powerful and he doesn't just rely on his quirk. He thinks things through

And Deku, in some ways, is easy to lash out at, especially now that he pushes back

And in a weird way he grows to respect Deku for that, for pushing back

This turned into a slight tangent but, yeah, I definitely can see this as Heartless.

To me, it is fitting

Deku kinda wishing he could just leave this toxic friendship and managing to

Honestly "you know some things but that's the old me" could be true for either depending on the situation, either Deku becoming more confident and standing up for himself or Bakugou slowly changing and becoming a better person

Also, the thing that actually made me think of Bakugou was "You got a new friend, well, i get homies / but in the end it's still so lonely" because Bakugou isn't dumb. He knows his middle school friends are only really hanging out with him for his quirk, Izuku was the only one that didn't, not in the same way or not fully at least.

It's definitely them early on in UA. I do imagine as they grow as people and heroes they become friends but that's admittedly because I love a happy ending where everyone is friends, not always possible, but in this case, after a lot of apologies, self-imporvement and probably therapy, I think they could make it work, unlike in the song

Editing this because I had another thought and that thought was this is just villain or maybe not villain but not a hero either Deku. This becoming his attitude towards society and Bakugou. Maybe Deku can't help but reach out to Bakugou when something happens at UA while he's attending and Bakugou answers and, against their better judgment, they actually talk but nothing ever changes

So weird AU idea I got that literally came to me in a Dream.

Sofia the first My Hero Academia AU. Though after I continued to come up with ideas it began to turn into a Tangled the series MHA AU as well

So the premise is Sofia is in a way the Midoriya of this story she is born quirkless. Before the series starts her mother marries Roland the Second who is the Owner of the most successful support item industry, and as well as a pro hero (quirk- steel like TetsuTetsu) though he’s mostly retired from hero work to focus on his kids. Her two step siblings are James whose quirk is steel which he inherited from his father and Amber whose quirk is jewel shields (like Rarity in EQG). Amber inherited her quirk from their mother who died in a fight against a villain when they were very young. James is pretty nice to Sofia off of the bat but Amber is a bit quirkest and is mean to Sofia (similar to her being mean to Sofia when they first meet in the original series, and her reasons for being mean to her in the original series still stand, she doesn’t like what seems like an intrusion on their family.)

She is a big Fan of the Pro-Hero Cinder, who is actually in a way this stories version of All Might. Cinder (Cinderella) was born with a simple spark quirk which was relatively useless but combined with another vestiges power of energy she was able to make flames. (I know with recent reveals about OFA her having a quirk would be slightly problematic but this is an au and it makes sense for the backstory I have in my head)

The other Vestiges with their quirks are (in no particular order):

Belle - Energy - (Used it for healing)

Tiana - animal shapeshifter

Snow White - Snow powers

Aurora- Anivoice

Jasmine - Size changing

Mulan - Super Strength

Ariel - Mermaid transformation and water control (like Cleo from H20 just add water)

Elena is the original vestige

Obviously with the different powers the plot will take some different turns. But I wanted to give Sofia powers that she uses in the show instead of just making her a gender bent Deku of sorts.

Now for our UA staff. I kind of want Cedric to be our Version of Aizawa, first of all because I adore him but also because he has that disgruntled vibe where he pretends he hates kids but is willing to die for them. The quirk I’m going to give for him is called the Wild Card. I came up with the idea for it based off of the fact that his spells often don’t go to as planned. It means that he has a wide variety of powers which are activated through card tricks. When he was younger he struggled with control and things blew up his face (often literally) he had to learn what certain combinations and types of cards meant and would produce.

Merida is a pro hero and her quirk is Predator Vision (a real MHA quirk that) because I wanted her to have a cool quirk that would assist her but I still wanted her bow skills to be her own (though I did for a bit consider making her like Lady Nagant). I love Merida so I had to include her and she just didn’t fit as a vestige so a pro hero it was. Sofia interns under her.

Princess Ivy is our version of Shiggy. Her black and white dragonflies which she produces are able to consume anything (instead of erasing memory like they did in STF) similar to how Shiggy can decay stuff.

Vor is All for One. She has the same powers and everything. I’m tempted to make her related to Elena somehow because I kind of like that aspect of the AFO/OFA struggle. It’s my au I could do whatever I wanted I could make them sisters if I desired and I am kind of tempted to.

Rapunzel’s backstory is that she has been held by Mother Gothel who is part of a mafia (Zhan Tiri). She has the similar powers to what she has in the show/movie her hair glows and reverses damage. She is sort of this story’s Eri. Mother Gothel can produce black or blue rocks that are unbreakable, as can her daughter Cassandra.

Cassandra was adopted by a policeman after a raid on a quirk trafficking ring by some hero’s. She resents her mother because she abandoned her. When her quirk came in her father was surprised to realize that she was Mother Gothel’s daughter but loved her nonetheless. The same could not be said for the others around her most people her age started ignoring her or antagonizing her from that point on. She decided she wanted to follow in her fathers footsteps and help people so she enrolls in the hero course. Eventually her and Sofia are part of the mission later to save Rapunzel

(This has been in my drafts since my Sofia the First hyperfixation. I wanted to make it more fleshed out and I kind of have but I’ve decided just to post it as is. If anyone is interested I can elaborate on parts of it but right now this is it. Also though I doubt anyone would anyone can use any concepts I present here as long as I get credit.)

I'll answer the pet peeve rq. Unless the other person's muse is a legit mind reader, no, your muse can not read mine's thoughts. It drives me nuts when another mun's muse physically reacts to something my muse thought about. Ex. My muse is thinking about getting a glass of water or something to drink then other mun's muse gets up and pours them a drink.

Ok, it is a nice gesture that your muses did that but no... mine was thinking. I know that probably sounds like something not worth getting annoyed over but it does.

Back to the 1st question !

So short story: I wanted to challenge myself.

Long Story:

Before I made this blog, I was speaking with my wife, @shiningxfates about her Bakugou and she mentioned something along the lines of "I have roleplayed with villain Dekus before." and I remembered thinking "Oh goodness! Villain Deku?? How would that sweet baby bean be a villain??" It just sounded so foreign and jarring to me, this kid with the lifelong dream to be a hero... be written as a villain.

I can't recall when or how this next discussion happened but she said something like "It's popular for Deku to turn into a villain from 1 of 2 ways. From Katsuki's bullying or during Deku's vigilante arc." Note, I have a horrible memory so I can't recall the exact words or even when this was said but that was the jist of it.

And it got me thinking.

If those two were the most common ways, I wanted to make my own villain verse but not with those origins. I added a quirkless factor to make it more challenging. Y'all. That was difficult as hell. I do recall wracking my brain for days, trying to think what would motive Izuku into being a villain outside of the bullying and since he would be quirkless, how would he turn so soon since he received All Might's consideration in episode 2.

One thing stood out to me. Izuku had said in episode 1 "Mom, that's not what I needed you to say." Izuku ... what do you mean by needed ? Why did you need to hear her say 'You can be a hero' ? Which then lead to the fact that All Might first said to him "Some Villains can't be defeated without a quirk." and then the pro heroes berated him for stepping in and trying to save Katsuki.

There was the motivation. Remember the saying "All things come in threes" ? Three times. We hear his dream crushed 3 times. It's ok if Black Swan Origin hasn't been read yet but there is something I want to point out which I don't know if anyone noticed. In the Origin, Izuku asks Why to his mom, All Might and to the Pros.

He never directed this to Katsuki.

Towards the end, Izuku says "Lies. Lies. Lies." To what his mother, All Might and the Pros said to him. To what Katsuki said, he didn't utter "Lies." Izuku doesn't blame him at all for taking this path. His motivation, after hearing he could not be a hero, was to prove them wrong by defeating heroes.

I wracked my brain again because Izuku is very intelligent and I wanted to convey that. I remember Hawks infiltrating LOV as a Spy and I thought "If there is a spy in the Swan's ranks, how can he stay discreet when it comes to discussing which Pro hero he is taking down?" I gave him a gambling habit, to gain money, but it also worked for him to give the heroes code names via suit cards.

And making his public face that of a woman came from the saying "False information is worse than no information." I try to keep him many steps ahead. Hell, all of the heroes who go missing... they're not dead. They're basically used as leverage in case he ever gets captured.

As for the name well, in finances, the term Black Swan means "a rare, unpredictable, and random event that poses significant downside risk"

Black Swan also means "an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect and severe consequences"

Izuku also has a very slender body, like a swan but there's a more obvious reason why he picked it. Esp if you saw the first episode of MHA. Some time after I made my Black Swan verse, I asked my waifu what kind of traits does Quirkless Villain Izuku have and she said "He is usually a hacker." Which I can see but I prefer the one I made, a chess master ! ]]

Deku Centric Gen Fanfiction I’ve read this year (Ft. Dad For One )

I’m back again with more Fanfiction recs. My taste tends to center Midoriya Izuku in non-ship fics, though there are one or two “ship fics” listed in the category.

This is a list of all my favorite MHA / BNHA fics I’ve read this year. The My Hero Academia / Boku No Hero Academia fandom produces so much that it’s hard for me to get to everything, so I thought I’d help out others in a similar situation by posting the fics that I personally were moved or impressed by in some way this year. A surprising number of them were Dad For One, where Midoriya Hisashi (Izuku’s father) is All For One.

The list is sorted from word count descending, with the fics with the most words at the top and the least words at the bottom.

I’d also be remiss as a quirkless blog not to mention the fics that deal with quirklessness in some way!

So All I Hear Are Echoes isn’t technically a quirkless fic, but it interestingly deals with Izuku being assumed quirkless for a bunch of the first few chapters, and therefore you get a sense for how a quirkless identity shaped his character, such as police discussions of fighting style, job hunting, being underestimated by villains, etc.

Mischief in Musutufu is the familiar brand of Quirkless fic that features Deku becoming the quirkless hero he dreamed of while sticking it to those who said he couldn’t—in this case, it was All Might. This quirk plays with the fluidity of quirklessness in a way that kinda inspires me for future fics, but otherwise it’s very classic I’m its lore as a Quirkless Izuku/All Might bashing story. Despite this, I discuss how this fic is honestly more than it seems in this post. Overall a FUN and heartwarming slice of life AU!

in darkness blooms the spider lily is one of those RARE quirkless villain Deku fics that just work so well. First of all, the OOC nature of villainous Izuku doesn’t really matter due to Izuku’s total amnesia surrounding his own villainy.

SPOILERS Second of all, the conditions of living quirkless is portrayed so well, starting from the first few chapters where Izuku assumed his poor medical treatment is due to quirklessness, to the chapters about how he changed the landscape on how a lot of heroes view quirklessness due to his grand villainy, as many heroes had underestimated him based on quirklessness in the past, to the way his villainy is directly tied to his poor treatment as a quirkless person in the vein of a political radicalization (that happened in that time period forgotten through amnesia). The major tension of the fic is whether hero society has improved enough in their treatment of quirkless people to prevent this blank slate from radicalizing again.

Two Hundred Years Isn’t That Long is fascinating because it captures the nuance of how quirklessness is, although very physically real, mostly a social construct. It does so by placing quirklesss Izuku in the context of a time right before quirks were a common thing, and then flinging him to modern society where everyone has one.

SPOILERS. As such, it’s really fascinating to see him interact with students like Bakugou and describe the way he comes from a majority quirkless area, which is unfathomable to the students, until it’s revealed he’s from the past. In a lot of ways, this changes the way they view his quirklessness, since he’s placed within the context of being normal within his own time instead of lacking in this time, especially because this Izuku is actually deathly afraid of quirks and views them the way we would as humans without quirks as a social construct.

So while Bakugou still scoffs at this “useless” person, Izuku in contrast does not take this to heart. This is because quirks are not a real social construct to him, yet, so the significance of his lack of one bounces harmlessly off his skin. And his confidence in his physical capabilities are not mired in any beliefs about his lack of a quirk, so he takes an active role of physical combat in a way he just never did in canon pre-OFA (and therefore impresses Bakugou in a way he would’ve never been able to as normal quirkless Izuku).

This fic is just so cool the way it highlights the socially constructed attitudes about quirks and quirklessness without making it a focus of the fic, which is what I originally liked about MHA in the first place (before I realized that it just wasn’t actually as thought out as I thought).

One Exception is notable for how stereotype about quirkless people contribute not just to their poor treatment, but making them seem harmless. SPOILERS Much like how female abusers are taken less seriously due to the perception that women are weak, it’s fascinating the way this fic uses Izuku’s status as a bullied quirkless character to hide from Katsuki the ways their relationship is actually imbalanced in favor of Izuku, to hide the fact that Izuku is not harmless.

The Steps Taken From Us takes a very fun and similarly indirect perspective into the nuances of quirkless issues by killing Izuku off for unrelated reasons. While this story indeed plays off the fandom trope of “What if Izuku really did take a swan dive like Bakugou said?” the actual truth is that he was murdered, not suicidal, and the story is about Katsuki trying to find Justice for him (and running up against the effects of quirkless discrimination despite not being quirkless himself).

A lot of these monkey’s paw Bakugou Bullying stories are about this concept of Bakugou learning consequences or of directly experiencing how quirkless discrimination causes harm, but I often cringe at how they inadvertently portray suicide in inaccurate and ill-advised ways, especially because it just feels a little unsubtle of a point. Thus, this fic solves that by highlighting the way real life marginalized groups struggle to get Justice for crimes done against them.

Thus, even though Bakugou has benefitted from having a strong quirk’s reputation, in trying to find Justice for Izuku, he learns about the ways quirkless people are dismissed as lost causes, the way saying otherwise will label you crazy, the way Izuku’s concerns were ignored as crazy, the way quirkless people are targeted for this very reason, etc. It’s interesting to see a Bakugou with a messed up reputation instead of Izuku, as it fulfills that monkey’s paw impulse without using suicide as a cudgel.

On top of that, the larger metaphor about Izuku’s voice as a quirkless person being silenced is very poignant, as it helps to symbolize that it’s not about quirkless people being incapable of achieving, but that they’re actively prevented from doing so by other people and society.

Multilante is a classic Quirkless Izuku vigilante story told through the cute gimmick of animal hoodies and other characters projecting onto those hoodies.

Float is interesting in the way it explores Izuku’s relationship to quirks and Bakugou as a post-quirkless person in a way canon never really thought to. In canon, Izuku’s chief concern is proving that with a quirk, he’s now equal to Bakugou and can fight him or whatever, but that kind of just assumes that Bakugou was logical for bullying him over something he couldn’t control. You know, ‘he was quirkless and therefore useless, but now he’s not.’ You know, ‘it wouldn’t have actually been bullying if Deku could just fight back’ (with the quirk he didn’t have lol).

SPOILERS In contrast, this fic throws down the gauntlet to ask, point-blank, what Izuku did to deserve any of the bullying? Nothing. It was illogical, it said he was never good enough, and that cuts someone far deeper than getting a quirk would heal. As such, it’s less about quirklessness and more about the lasting emotional scars of it.
