I have already been planning projects for after surgery and I picked up fabric for my sister-in-law/bestie’s quilt. I’m going to be doing rainbow skulls with solid black and rainbow. It’s going to be done in a coffin English paper piecing style- I’m so excited for it!
Below is an example image (from Pinterest) of what I am planning!

if i were an academic i would love to write a book about all the unseen human labor and lives that make it possible to produce a single quilt.
i don't use commissioned longarm services for my quilting because i can't afford it, but i also used to really struggle with the idea of having another person complete such a prominent part of my project. i thought i wouldn't be able to say 'i made this.'
but i didn't grow the cotton that got woven into the fabric i'm using.
i didn't design the printed fabric collection.
or paint the batik.
i didn't do the math and writing that went into the patterns i use.
i didn't drive any of the ships and trucks that transported the fabric.
i didn't mine the metal that turned into the needles in my machine or hand.
i wasn't the shelf stocker at the chain store or the owner of the indie shop i bought from.
quilting is an inherently collaborative art form. the creativity didn't start with me.

i have a conundrum, and i can't ask my grandma who quilts because it's for destiel fanfiction. anyways i'm writing a bit where there's a character who quilts, is around retirement age, and brings her wares to a market to sell. how long does it take to make a quilt? if quilting were her only "thing", how many quilts could she conceivably make in one winter? including planning the designs and choosing fabric, cutting the fabric, sewing the blocks together, putting the layers together, and doing the actual quilting (with a quilter, not by hand) would it be reasonable to say she could do a quilt every two weeks, or is that too few?

I've seen the idea that Kurapika sews/makes his own Kurta clothing thrown around a lot, especially as a way to preserve his culture, but I had another idea today: imagine Leorio being great at sewing. Imagine he overhears Kurapika cursing at something one evening and finds him in his room trying to mend his blue and gold tunic, but he just can't seem to thread the needle, or he keeps pricking his finger, or he realizes he pinned the fabric in the wrong place. Leorio offers to help and kurapika is mesmerized by how easily he works the needle, how he hums to himself as the thread moves back and forth. "where did you learn to sew?" "Oh, we've been learning how to stitch up wounds in class, I'm not that good at it yet though." He's being humble but kurapika thinks he's a natural at it and is still shocked to see the lanky, goofy, large-handed Leorio do something so delicately, and with such care for his tunic, and he wonders how is this the same man I once fought with on a boat? How is this the same man who punched one of the most famous hunters on live television and almost got elected chairman? What is this side of Leorio - and how can he see it more? What did he do to deserve this earnest and caring man?
Needless to say Kurapika will be asking for Leorio's help on sewing projects in the future.
