he  knew  kenichi  was  a  skilled  fighter.  he’d  witnessed  it  countless  times  on  their  journey —each  swing  of  the  sword  calculated,  each  enemy  falling  with  a  grim  finality.  and  yet,  this  undead  companion  preferred  to  linger  in  the  shadows,  doing  as  little  as  possible  while  others  did  the  heavy  lifting.  from  his  hidden  perch,  he  would  nod  in  silent  approval  when  kenichi’s  blade  struck  true  and  click  his  tongue  when  the  kill  got  too  messy.  it  had  become  almost  a  game,  silently  grading  each  death  with  the  dispassion  of  a  connoisseur.

when  he  noticed  the  army  of  goblins  closing  in  from  the  distance,  he  didn’t  even  blink.  Instead,  he  waved  a  hand  as  if  swatting  away  an  insect,  returning  to  the  task  of  polishing  his  lute.  every  now  and  then,  he’d  glance  up—just  to  check  if  kenichi  might  need  a  hand  or  if  there  was  any  loot  worth  claiming.

the  shadows  were  his  refuge,  a  place  where  he  could  have  easily  stayed  until  the  chaos  subsided.  but  when  a  goblin,  small  and  foolish,  dared  to  climb  onto  kenichi  and  tangle  its  grubby  fingers  in  his  hair,  something  inside  him  snapped.

no  one  should  mess  with  a  man’s  hair.  especially  not  when  he  hadn’t  even  had  the  chance  to  climb  on  kenichi  himself.  why  should  a  goblin  get  the  first  crack  at  it?

without  a  second  thought,  he  emerged  from  the  shadows,  daggers  already  in  hand.  with  a  flick  of  his  wrist,  one  dagger  flew  straight  into  the  goblin’s  face,  ending  its  brief  moment  of  triumph.

“what?  i  had  to  protect  the  hair,”  he  said,  with  an  innocence  that  didn’t  quite  match  the  precision  of  his  throw.  as  the  battle  raged  on,  he  ensured  that  not  a  single  goblin  laid  a  finger  on  kenichi.

when  the  last  goblin  fell,  he  turned  to  kenichi,  a  hint  of  exasperation  in  his  voice.  “mext  time,  think  with  your  head,  not  just  your  sword!  you  could  have—”  he  paused,  catching  himself,  “we  could  have  died!”

   quile  should  know  better  than  to  be  out  late  at  night  -  despite  that  being  the  time  her  family  prefers  to  be  most  active.  it's  far  safer  in  the  woods  than  it  is  the  small  town  -  and  it's  why  she'd  ran  to  the  woods  with  a  man  chasing  her.  god  forbid  she  have  a  night  to  herself  to  wander  aimlessly  and  enjoy  the  cold,  calm  night.  she  always  loved  it  -  but  so  did  those  with  less  than  kind  intentions. 

   she  hedges  her  bets  on  knowing  the  forest  better  than  her  pursuer.  she  would  have  been  correct  in  that  -  were  it  not  for  the  fact  his  life  was  forfeit  the  moment  he  stepped  into  these  woods.  they  were  far  from  alone,  and  from  her  fear  alone;  she  should  have  expected  this  would  happen. 

   there's  a  twinge  of  guilt  as  she  walks  up  to  the  scene.  not  for  the  man  -  but  for  her  friend  who  committed  the  killing.  should  have  never  had  to  go  out  of  his  way.  maybe  she's  a  little  too  soft  -  it  always  breaks  her  heart  just  that  little  bit.  i  should  be  able  to  take  better  care  of  myself  so  i  don't  burden  you. 

   “are  you  alright?”  her  concern  is  solely  for  him,  ignoring  the  carcass  on  the  ground.  “you  know  you  never  have  to  go  out  of  your  way  for  me,  right?”  there's  the  guilt.  but  she  gives  a  smile  anyway.  “even  so…  thank  you.”  she  expresses  her  gratitude  with  genuine  relief.  “i…”  she  pauses,  and  then  softly  sighs.  “sometimes  humans  are  the  most  terrifying  thing.”  she  furrows  her  brow.  “their  lack  of  care  and  understanding…  i'll  never  quite  understand  it.”

God the Leah Clearwater stuff was so bizarre. All the stuff with the werewolves was bizarre! Oh Emery's the half brother of either Sam or Jacob or Quil but it'll never get brought up again. Oh Leah's infertile and hates it but there's no resolution to that story. Oh sometimes they can fall in love with babies but it's fine. And don't even get me started on how imprinting in and of itself is deeply fucked up for both the imprintee and imprinter alike but it's never acknowledged as such at all (the fact that Sam and Leah were deeply in love and then that went out the window just because Sam saw Emily, that's such a horrifying situation for all three of them! and that one creepy as Hell bit where Renesmee starts walking and Jacob immediately claps because he just has to automatically do what she wants even if he doesn't want to, along with the general creepiness of this adult man falling in love with a months old baby). And of course using an actual real life Native American tribe for all of this shit.

Listen, Twilight is not good. There's a lot of issues surrounding the writing and plot and worldbuilding, even if the hype against it was absolutely overblown and fueled mainly by misogyny. Unfortunately I read these books when I was ten and had a far less critical eye for the media I consumed, so I tolerated it and they still have the occasional hold on me.

Hello, Quill! Apologies for the delay, for some reason the numbers were not showing on my tumblr page on desktop and I was too lazy to go and find it on my phone again. (Also I got distracted by my tumblr homepage but that's a whole different story.)

5. what book do you think everyone should read?

Hm, this is a tricky one. I don't usually like saying books people should read, due to me disliking most of the books people say I should read (like Pride and Prejudice and Absolutely True Diary Of Part Time Indian). So like there's books I would like people to read because they mean a lot to me, but not something everyone should read you know?

But if I had to pick a book, it would have to be "The Giver". I know some people hate this book, but I adore it so much. It's like, the whole idea of our whole world is treated the exact same way with such detachment is so fascinating to me. I could go on about this book so much, I love it.

(Also, I have read the whole quartet, but I personally still love the Giver the best.

30. is there a book that changed your life?

Someone is going to make fun of me for this, but either Harry Potter or Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. I have a thing for books about a chosen one at magical bordering school, okay?

But Harry Potter was my first obsession with something others knew about. It was what brought me to fanfic. It was how I made my best friend. I still have Narcissa's Malfoy's wand, although broken, in my toy area. I may not interact with it, but it definitely changed my life.

Carry On, on the other hand, was the first book that i read with an explicitly queer couple. I probably had read books before with queer themes, but not any that had so proudly said it as Carry On. Yes, it has issues but I remember hiding the fact that I read it, because I wasn't supposed to read it. I remember thinking "there are people like me who date someone as the same gender as them?" It was a very eye opening book to me. I still reread it from time to time, and it's one of my favorite books.

42. do you buy new or secondhand books?

I don't actually buy a lot of books, due to me not having a good place to keep them nowadays. But I have a mixture of new and old books. The last few books I have bought were new, due to either being work books or because I couldn't find an copy of the book I needed (it was All The Bright Places, and for some reason the local used book store didn't have it and I didn't feel like trusting Amazon). So I try to buy used books, but it's not always a guarantee.

Anyway, apologies for the ramble, and the delay. Please go follow Quil, everyone, Quil is such a fun guy (even if you like wearing toe socks /lh.)
