WIP Wednesday (4/17) | Guardian Angel Neil AU (Part 164)

“Neil—”

“God! Why won’t it just—” Neil shakes his arm wildly, looking more and more like a flailing animal caught in a trap. Despite this, the knife stays. Andrew wonders if Neil’s about to gnaw off his own arm to get away from it.

“Neil, just settle down—”

“Fuck!” Neil curses and thrusts the knife downwards into the span of roof between them. It carves through the concrete like fresh butter and stands there with its handle pointed towards the clouds.

Neil rubs at his now-empty palm like he can erase the way it felt in his hand. After a second he folds in on himself, hands over his eyes and gasping for breath. Andrew can do nothing but stare at him— not quite frozen with fear, but certainly frosty.

He tears his eyes away from the angel to glance down at the knife where it glistens from its new home, the blade twinkling like it’s got something to say. Andrew’s tempted to reach for it, to take it and hurl it as far away as possible. But he doesn’t think that will work. And accidentally killing someone down below with an angelic knife isn’t something he needs on his record.

They wince as the piercing needle pushes through his cartilage and out the other end, and don't even realize that said needle has been replaced by a little gold hoop earring. Classy.

The rust pats the jade's cheek in a job well done, and Valtii flushes green for a second. He snorts out a laugh, and leaves them to admire themselves in the mirror.

"It's weird and fickle and ever-changing. It makes you happy and sad and vulnerable and guarded and always finds a way under your skin, your teeth, your nails, you name it. It's wretched, but makes life worth living. How's that?"
