julius, do you ever worry that xayfus might be a bit more unstable than he lets on?
"That depends on what you mean by 'unstable', doesn't it?"
"Do I believe he acts more composed and mentally sound than he feels at times? Yes. Do I think he's on the verge of committing some horrid crime or snapping? No."

"It's quite the transgression, I'm unsure I have it in my heart to forgive such a lack of attention, I'm quite hurt, you know..."
"But you're cute, so I suppose exceptions can be made, even if you favor cannolis."
"And I admit, you have me quite intrigued- I've yet to taste an alternative flavoring for tiramisu myself. Plans for a future date, perhaps?"

Childhood Promises
POV: Otavah; The Reshaper Characters: Otavah Minera (The Reshaper) & Adenza Ickore (The Lustrous) Setting: Incredibly distant past, when the two were both in their early to mid teens.
—– Google Docs Link —–
You throw the alien fruit- an orange, you’d been told- up into the air, and catch it with one hand. You do this repeatedly, idly, as you attempt to do the same thing with your other hand, although using magic instead. It floats untouched up into the air, higher and higher with each twitch of your fingers, before returning to hover just above you.
The motions interchange, one after the other, until eventually, you find a steady rhythm to do both simultaneously. Once you hit your stride, your brows knit with concentration and you continue these motions for easily the next ten minutes.
“Minera, I wish to speak with you!” calls an annoyingly familiar voice, beneath where you sit amongst the tree branches. Their tone was calm, only raised in volume enough to catch your attention.
Unfortunately, your annoyance doesn’t stop there, because you were so busy focusing on your fruit-tossing that you didn’t notice their approach. Your face twists as the two oranges fall from the air and bump you straight in the forehead.

hm :) this-or-thats are kinda fun. okay this one's for reshaper!! tiramisu or cannoli
"What a pleasant surprise- it's been a bit since your last visitation, my little cat."
"As for your curiosity, I'd rather a tiramisu. Sure, a cannoli is good as well, but it's much simpler, and I do have quite a preference for the complicated."

not to get personal, but if i can get personal for a second;
my mom has been struggling with health complications for a while and was diagnosed for kidney disease.
she has to take numerous medications and go to numerous appointments, experiences cognitive impairment where she forgets simple words and names and has become increasingly fatigued. she's been receiving treatment and is on call for a kidney transplant, but my parents' lives have been significantly disrupted to get her everything she needs.
my sister has opened up a GFM to help ease some of their financial stress as mom and dad have to take more time off of work to make it to all her doctor's visits, get her set up for at-home dialysis, and be ready for recovery if she receives the transplant call.
if you can share the link around, donate, or if you'd even like something in exchange, i have links below for each! more will be updated onto my store soon come may and i may have some commission slots open up on vgen and new adopts on kofi to add my own funds.
any help is much appreciated!

ii. the dust settles
squidgeworld version
this was going to have panels, and then i realized i was too ambitious. i will post those soon. <:]
▷ ▷
In a sudden stroke of dumb luck, the stars in the sky aligned. It was a formation of peace and victory looking upon this session, where the good ending was so difficult to find.
During a walk from his home to scout out the area in which he now lived, Arya, the Prince of Space, leapt out of the way of Nova nearly crashing upon him up from somewhere. He couldn't breathe.
The dead trees on his Land and the murky atmosphere showed no sign of life, so they were forboding. He could only panic further as Nova began talking to him. Something about saving the session, saving their lives.
Nova advanced on him with nary a thought in their mind, bat wielded and held to the sky. He gasped when they swung at him and barely missed. It was great that he had the forethought to try dodging, but the swing was so fast that Arya felt the cool of its wake, strong and deadly. Terrified, he continued stepping back until he tripped backward on an overgrown branch.
Soon after sending the man sailing onto his back in a harsh fall, Nova stood over him and stepped hard on his torso, obstructing his movement. He panicked and said something, something he immediately forgot. Arya instinctively knew that he wouldn't remember it later, but he flinched once more, and Nova held their bat skyward, ready to go in for the kill, before they stopped to observe.
Arya stared at them, grasped at their magenta-colored pants. They were ascended, and have been for months now.
"Nova- are you okay?"
They didn't respond, and they felt their resolve weakening at this specific question. A shameful thing, but Arya continued to talk with them, plead with them. Their grey eyes matched their grey form, weak and pitiful.
"Please- don't kill me. I wanted to- to talk to you..."
"Talk to me? About what?"
Nova's voice came out gritty and impatient, but Arya's touch had gone from ankle to shin, and Nova was so taken aback that they stepped off of him away from a gentle thing like that. No one had ever looked at them as pitiful before, and no one had ever treated them like that, not in so long.
"You'd been acting weird," said the Prince, kindly, "and I wanted to ask... about it."
Nova watched him owlishly, as though waiting for him to do something, to trick them. Instead of that, Arya sat up, grunting at the effort it took to do so, and he beckoned Nova to sit with him on the patch of dead grass. They stared, motionless.
Arya tried once more. "What were you saying...?"
"Saying?"
"You said something like, 'to save everyone'. What did that mean?"
Arya's characteristic patience made him look so serene and watchful right then, and Nova started to crack before his very eyes. He watched, stunned as Nova dropped their bat, despaired; they forgot their purpose in doing this.
"I was trying to save everyone from having to play," they said, defeated. Their hands were now firmly stuck holding one another, fidgety and tense. A Knight with fearful hands was a pitiful thing.
"To play the game?" Arya was confused, and he frowned. "You said the game was to save us from the apocalypse..."
Nova looked up at Arya, brows furrowed in a deep frown. "When?"
"Um... during entry. You- um, you had me, putting down the machines, and you said that- that the game was going to get us out. And other unusual things..."
"I did say that," murmured Nova, exasperated, "but what are you talking about?"
"Well, um- then- then you said something, very strange. You said- well- to me, just to me... that you didn't want to hold my hand through it."
Nova finally sat down across from Arya and adjusted their sitting position, and Arya carefully followed. They both sat this way in the middle of a path, dead grass poking at their knees and feet while the bat laid forgotten. He continued, lowering his voice like he was saying something precious.
"You- didn't want to hold my hand through it, even though- the threat of dying was so close. It was cruel, but you were exacting, and meticulous. Like it had to be perfect. You said it in a way that, um... maybe you already did this before?"
The Knight stared, baffled.
"But- but that is just a guess!" Arya exclaimed, flustered, then continued, "you seemed really good at the game, like you knew what to do, but it's probably impossible, isn't it? My mother was similar about- about things like that. Things in her- her lived experience..."
Arya laughed, carefree and soft and tinkly, but still awkward as ever. And Nova was stunned speechless, having no words. Arya got away with his life, where they fully intended to cave his skull in, and save him from a neverending apocalypse loop.
He was conversational, even with the terror and uneasiness ebbing off of him. Nova wasn't sure if they should attribute it to the situation at hand, or Arya's own emotions - about his mother? Nova just felt nervous to claim victory with more coplayers, only for them to be lost to the game.
Surely, this was the fate granted to everyone -- it couldn't have just been Nova, themself? They didn't want this to happen to Arya, and so they had to kill him. What was he thinking?
After a while, Arya carefully stood up to his feet, and watched Nova carefully before holding out a hand to help them up. And the Knight, sheepish as they were, was quiet and grey as they took his hand to stand.
"It's impossible," said Arya with a soft smile, "but you're really smart, with this stuff. I can't figure out the frogs, I was going to ask you about that... Um, Jair- said that I should, but..."
"You have to find the right ones," said Nova, cutting in before he could finish his thought, "here. Just- follow me. I already know where they are."
Arya's eyes glowed, and he smiled. Nova was breathtaken, and they felt so sorry - an unconscionable thing. Why they glanced away like that, it couldn't be said. But they led him along down a path they'd already walked time and time again, without shedding a drop of blood at all.
▬
The dumb luck continued.
Since the Space player was already saved and assisted, Nova -- dutiful Knight that they were -- realized there were things yet to be done; problems they foolishly hoped would solve themselves once everything was destroyed accordingly.
Nova didn't think themself a particularly smart person. Perhaps calculated, or even malicious, but truly intelligent people, they thought, weighed all possibilities in their minds. Suppose they were simply just frustrated... and got ahead of themself.
In Arya's company, Nova visited the Land of Rivers and Flow -- the Rogue's domain. She was a rather stubborn sort, but Arya was -- in some weird sense of resignation -- quite pleased to meet with her.
Didn't they hate each other? Nova had to wonder as shoes crunched freshly grown grass that bounced back upright when released. Upon approach to the rather flowery abode, its door opened and a crossbow was aimed in a flourish of bright red hair.
Arya leapt at Nova's front, shocking them into silence. Evie, the Rogue of Time, stepped out with a steady aim at the two untimely visitors.
"I wasn't expecting either of you."
She spoke coldly, but Arya murmured in response, "Well, I can explain -- if you just stopped aiming that at us...?"
Evie squinted. "Why are you protecting them?"
"Because you really would have shot them... and they're okay now. I think you would like to hear them out. Please, trust what I have to--"
"Trust? You? Either of you?" The Rogue barked out a laugh, before finally putting her weapon away.
"It's my fault if I die here, I suppose. Now, what's going on here?"
Despite exerting an energy that Nova was often endeared to, Evie was someone who didn't like to waste a single moment -- less sentimental than most. Even Jair could find empathy sooner than her. It put Nova off, particularly now, so they hesitated.
A warm breeze blew over the Land, the home, and the three standing outside. Evie crossed her arms impatiently now, while Arya gave Nova an encouraging thumbs-up. Nova wondered if he forgave them so quickly because he had such low self-esteem, and they felt nauseous.
But they spoke.
"I didn't... I don't know what really happens after we win. Thanks to my assumption, I... planned on something fucked up. To sabotage, in the name of... saving the rest of you."
Evie shifted on her feet. Her long, thick red hair moved around on her shoulders with the motion.
"What did you assume?"
"I thought we would have to start over."
Evie's face went pale, but soon went red in indignation immediately after. "Why? Why on Earth would you think that was a possibility?"
"Because it happened to me."
Nova continued, despite the speechless panic ebbing off of the Rogue in steadily increasing waves. Her Heart must have been pounding in her chest.
"I didn't want the same to happen to you all. So... I planned to destroy everything. But... no longer."
With all the air of an apologetic child, Nova uncaptchalogued a small handheld mirror. Its intricate red frame gleamed beneath the morning of LORAF, and Evie, with wide eyes, gingerly removed it from their hands. Her reflection was invisible inside the frame. There was a sense that Evie had no idea what she was holding, but that all went away when she looked to Nova, who nodded firmly.
"It isn't scratched. If it goes wrong, I'll just leave it up to you, I guess. I'm sorry."
Evie was at a loss for words, breathing out as the shock settled in. "What... in the fuck? Where did you even get this? How did you know it was-- where it was?"
Nova hummed, and then carelessly gestured, "The flow on your Land redirects towards the Forge. It's located in a cave on the eastern side of your planet. The Scratch construct belongs to the denizen, actually... Melete's Mirror. It should come with a needle on the back... in case you want to start over."
Evie blanched, "Hey, seriously--"
Arya cut in, "I think we should both prepare... in case Nova's claim is true."
They both turned to the smaller man, who merely blushed for the unspeakable crime of speaking out of turn.
He muttered, "Just so we know."
Nova and Evie turned back to each other, but then Evie captchalogued the mirror and then placed a hand on her hip, quirking a brow at Arya. "So you believe them."
"If they're right, then... what are we going to do? They're living proof that it's a possibility."
There was a bitter silence, and Evie nodded, eyes on Nova.
"Fair point. Have you told the big guy yet?"
Nova's expression visibly soured as they looked away; Arya mumbled in an indecipherable set of syllables. After a long, uncomfortable silence, Evie couldn't help but laugh again, good-natured and silly. There was a dramatic sigh out of her.
"Let me help with that. Utterly hopeless, you guys."
Arya gave a meek laugh, but Nova wasn't sure; they knew their luck had to run out in trying to convince the skeptic. It would be futile, right?
He loathed them, after all. Finally, for the first time since being in this fifth session, Nova felt ugly and wrong. Even as Arya and Evie had their metaphorical back, and chattered on about what they would say to the Thief of Mind, Nova seemed unduly worried for the immediate future.
▬
In Nova's mind, three -- including themself -- was the number of people that counted as company, rather than being put on the spot with just them and another person. The emotions that flitted into their awareness could have been attributed to anything, and they knew that it was something that could lie in the back of their mind.
However, when entering the Land of Memories and Skyscrapers, they felt a significant dread. They didn't want to think about talking to Jair, nor did they want the Rogue and the Prince to defend them. It was silly, but they had never felt such an anxiety before.
By the time they all stepped off of the transportalizer, Jair was already standing around in front of the build that made up his house. The parading of multiple sets of footsteps was enough to make him turn around, auburn coils bouncing out of the way when he brushed his hair aside.
Nova didn't really see it before, but when silhouetted by the eye-searing lights of the Land, Jair looked so tired all the time. Not wanting to look the Thief in the eyes, they pathetically hid behind Evie and Arya once they all reached the front porch where he stood.
He scoffed at the arrivals. "What is this, a party invitation? Answer's no."
Evie spoke first, beaming as ever. "Aww, haha, you would lovemy parties. If Earth was still around, of course."
"Whatever. Can I help you? Any of you?"
There was a silence from the three when two of them turned towards Nova. They immediately felt the pressure, and despite their desire to speak up, their lips pursed.
"They just need to explain something," Arya was quiet, but helpful. "I think it's important for the session-"
"If it's about the plan to kill all of us, I don't care."
"It's not about that."
Nova's voice felt so feeble and impossibly small. With the huge buildings cascading high above their head, they felt so meager and stupid trying to prove themself. Jair glared at them, like an intimidating and ancient statue. His eyes squinted with that characteristic impatience of his.
"At least, it isn't anymore."
"Out with it, then."
Evie reached out to place her hand gently on Nova's back, startling them; Arya nodded, in some form of encouragement.
Nova took a deep breath.
"I assumed -- maybe wrongly, but I don't know -- that when the Game is won, and we go through the winning door, that everyone is transported to Earth, and then they have to play again. This happened to me four times."
Evie's hand lifted off their shoulder in a subtle but shocked flinch; Arya frowned sadly. Jair sneered at them, in some expectation for them to continue.
"...I just don't want it to happen again. So I did everything I could to sabotage everyone standing here right now. Including myself."
Jair paused, in some assessment of the information he received, and he turned to Evie. "So you believe them?"
"They found the Mirror without my help or even saying anything about it."
Jair's brows furrowed, perhaps in some sense of disgust. Nova glanced away from it all, down to their feet, ashamed.
"The Scratch Construct. They were serious about this. I didn't even know- I had no way of knowing."
Jair sighed, raggedly, then turned sharply to Nova. He leaned down a bit, staring them in the eyes.
"Prove it."
"Huh?" Nova blanched, went pale, "Prove what?"
"Prove that you're a so-called 'veteran'. That you've played the game before."
Nova was so blindsided by this that they didn't even know what to say, sputtering a whole lot of nothing before Arya spoke up, next.
"I'm sorry to ask this now, but... how are they meant to do that? There's not a lot of ways--"
"There's plenty of ways. Maybe I'll even find out for myself."
Evie and Arya turned to Jair with a sort of confusion about them, but Nova already knew what this suggested, and they put their hands up in some sort of white flag. A grim silence hung over the chosen four as Nova crossed their arms.
He wanted their memories. At the very least, a memory of something they had done in a past session. They were more than happy to throw some of the more useless things away. But which one to give him... They had to think.
Nova glanced to the worried Arya and the confused Evie, and then sighed.
"Alright. You can take... my ascension as the Mage of Mind."
Jair's brows pinched, surprised by this particular offer, but then he rolled his eyes. "Whatever. Just lower your head."
Nova obliged and lowered their head, as though in a bow. With all the quickness he could muster, Jair reached out and placed a large hand on the top of Nova's head, as though blessing them in some form. They could have fooled themself into thinking it was a gesture of comfort, but just as they were considering what memory was being taken from them, they felt the rather uncomfortable sensation of forgetting it. The teal glow was all-encompassing, casting everything about the memory they offered into the void.
The memory was gone, and so was the memory of ever having the memory in the first place. It was a strange sensation, but once Jair lifted his hand from their head, he stared into nothing in order to assess it.
"Well?" asked Evie, impatient as always.
Nova couldn't help but glance down at the ground, feeling scrambled. Jair let out a ragged sigh like he grew exhausted. Nova knew that their memory must have been an arduous one... whatever it was. He stared at them, and they simply shuffled beneath the weight of a gaze like that.
Their shame was so palpable. Jair shook his head, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Alright, I believe you. Can you all get off of my porch now?"
Arya frowned, glanced to Nova and Evie, then turned to Jair, reaching out to him with a gentle hand. "Are you okay, though?"
Jair waved it away, careless but not cruel. "I'm fantastic, thanks for asking. I just stole someone's memory of bleeding out."
His voice was dry and sardonic as ever, but Nova tried to speak up, earnestly as they could manage. Their hair shifted over their face as they lifted their hands.
"Listen, if you need a bit, it's fine, but... I just wanted to apologize--"
"I don'twant to hear it. You already half-assed that, anyway."
Jair took the few steps up the front steps to his porch, only to open his door with a thoughtless swing and peer at the solemnly quiet three.
"I'll message our group chat tomorrow. And you can message me if you need something important. But not right now. Leave."
And with a quick swing of a strong arm, the door was slammed in all their faces.
There was an odd silence between the last three, and it stretched long enough for Nova to say something. Their voice felt small.
"...He's only being difficult because I know a lot of things about him. Things he doesn't want me knowing."
"Like what?" Evie chirped meanly, rolling her eyes, "That he had a safety blanket?"
Nova frowned sadly, "Something like that. You guys can go now. I'll figure it out."
"I thought you were going to help me with the frogs-?"
Arya seemed so meek in asking that. Nova crossed their arms, thoughtful for a moment, before sticking their hands in their pockets. They tried to keep their tone gentle with him.
"I'll message you too. It's just been a long day, we just need all the dust to settle. Let's meet back here tomorrow."
Evie wrinkled her nose. "Here? At Jair's house?"
"Yeah. He'll come around eventually, but we have to give it time. Anyway-..."
Nova decided they were done socializing for the day, and waved a hand as they left. Receiving emotions like this was far too difficult right now. But now, even as they knew the dust wasn't exactlysettled, they knew that they could trust their current teammates to not lose themselves to an endless possibility. Nova actually thought it was going to be fine, for once.
It was going to be fine.
Nova's Heart felt warm at the thought. When was the last time they felt this way?
It was going to be fine.
