it’s the fact that it’s called the virgin suicides when they all knew that Lux wasn’t a virgin, just because the pretence that she died a virgin furthers the boys’ objectification by making each of the Lisbon sisters into their idea of a "perfect" woman. saintly, pure, unsullied, a Madonna. the boys erase the events and information that make the girls seem too human. while virginity is frankly a stupid, outdated, misogynistic construct, to the boys in the narrative, virginity is an important virtue for women. i doubt they know if any of the girls were actually definitely virgins when they died. but they emphasise that trait as part of their idolisation of the girls, which is really just thinly, prettily veiled objectification…

if a subculture can be defined as a music taste, a general mindset/belief system, and a fashion aesthetic, then does the my bloody valentine, the smiths, neon genesis evangelion, serial experiments lain, deftones, tv girl, depressed, radiohead, weezer, ergo proxy, mbti, thrifted oversized grey clothes, rot in your room, the cure, shoegaze, midwest emo thing count as a new subculture.
