I wholeheartedly needed Stede and Ed chasing the memory of mothers' kindness away from the specter of their fathers' failures and into each other's arms.

"Stede Bonnet, recently divorced, returns to the town he once knew. He's got the old house, he's got the bees, and he's going to be(e) happy if it's the last thing he does. In Favor with Their Stars by @mxmollusca (Stede/Ed, 37k, M, scifi AU, canon arc aboard a spaceship). Extraordinary study of personhood and love, incredible use of its central concept. Stede's coming-to-consciousness as an AI, falling in love with Ed as he falls in love with life, parallels Stede's in-show coming-awake in a way that makes me cry. Their unconventional communication makes them so intuitively close. And Ed's sudden blooming in the liminal space of care and possibility Stede creates for them is exquisite.

"Ed is an engineer aboard the Revenge, an interplanetary research vessel on a multi-year mission. An accident wakens Ed from cryostasis months early, and his only companion is STE/DE, the ship's onboard AI. They develop an unconventional friendship, but is it possible to have more?"

Missed a couple of weeks, but I'm back with some AUs!

I Want To Believe (E, 4697) - I'm a soft touch for anything X-Files related, so here's a 90s college AU with a bit of role reversal (Stede knows he's gay, Ed doesn't)

three, four (T, 3240) by @queerspacepunk - canon-divergence AU, Ed goes with Stede to see Mary. A fantastic handling of one of my favorite fic concepts.

Making an Entrance (G, 1033) by @chocolatepot - listen I just like everything she writes, ok? And this one is a very clever and a little silly role reversal AU.

the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce (E, 25k) by @veeagainsttheday - ngl this one kind of fucked me up, even though it does have a happy ending. time travel??? heavy themes, the inevitability of tragedy, but also the possibility of love. Very good, but also I did cry at the end.

The Deeply Cool Adventures of Mr. Stede Bonnet & His Magic School Bus (M, 14K) - this is GODDAMN ADORABLE. Yup, it's Stede as the successor to Ms Frizzle, with Ed as a paleontologist that the class (crew) is visiting. I'm just old enough that I didn't watch it growing up, and I've never had kids, but you don't even need the context to enjoy the hell out of this one.

from 2019-2021 i worked for a company that owned ~eight regional newspapers in classified advertising, specifically the obituaries department. i’m not gonna get too into it bc you know i’m sure the math can be done on me + proofreading 100+ death notices a day + global pandemic, man it got rough. some funny fuckin stories though for real!!!!!

1 - Ed x Stede: a slow burn or an arson fire?

BOTH. IT'S BOTH and that's what makes it so good. both Ed & Stede are immediately ride-or-die and smitten w each other. Both have their own issues standing in the way so they can't really do anything about it until the very last moment. We have a rare case of a romance where we get love at first sight AND the slow, gradual falling in love. Because they're both idiots <3

4 - What’s your favorite inanimate object?

Answered here! (It's the paperweight Stede uses to hit Badminton I over the head. Because it's a sperm whale. Goodbye.)

8 - What moment emotionally fucked you up the most?

When Ed came to the pier and Stede wasn't there :( Just. The immediate resignation; "Yeah that tracks why did I even think he'd come". The way he paces a bit, then lies down, then finally rows away, all with the same void expression. That was visceral, I have seen it so many times and it still gets me :((

4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP?: I've answered this one on THIS POST. But for Dragon Age in particular, I tend to not engage with any Sebastian or Cullen related ships. As a general rule, I don't fuck with anyone who supports the Chantry, and both Sebastian and Cullen are just a bit too much for me in that regard.

So you know how pronouns in te reo Māori are gender neutral? The downside of that is that this line loses all its impact when directly translated into te reo, because there's nothing in "Ko Ed tōku ingoa" to indicate that Ed is a man.

If I was translating the whole scene, I'd have to rewrite that entire part somehow, otherwise Mary goes away thinking that Stede is dating a woman called Edith or something.

Edit: @queerspacepunk pointed out that instead of asking "what's her name (ko wai tōna ingoa)?", Mary could ask "ko wai tōu wahine?" (literally 'who is your woman', I promise it sounds better in te reo)

Then Stede could just say "Ko Ed tōku tāne" (My man is Ed).

Kia ora e te Queer Space Punk, kei runga noa atu koe! Also, I too am unsure about whether it should be "tōku tāne" or "tāku tāne" - I've heard kōrero for both. I'm going with tōku because some people say that tōku is for your partner/lover but tāku is for your spouse, so hopefully in s2 there will be a chance for a meaningful change from tōku to tāku.

as spring rolls around it’s time again for a little house keeping and updates to the active / in-active list of DA Drunk Writing Circle. 

This is just to make sure everyone on the regular roll-call is still interested, as this makes the life a little easier for the admins.

If you are interested in staying on the headcount list, please reply or reblog to this post with a message. If your blog name changed, please let us know too!

If you want to be inactive, you do not have to take any action.

Reminders:

You’re not required to write or participate any set number of times, so if you think you’re going to write this spring/summer, by all means stay on the active list!

You can ALWAYS request to go back on the ‘active list’, just message an admin!

You can always opt in for an occasional Friday, even if you’re not on the active list. Just reply to the head count post - though earlier notice is easier for the admins.

Regardless of whether you’re active or inactive, you’re always welcome to post and tag us Friday night, as long as you are a member of the group. If an old prompt suddenly inspires you, just tag!
