Here, Dr. Randall.” Joe leaned over and carefully placed the skull in my hands. “Tell me whether this lady was in good health, while I check her legs.” “Me? I’m not a forensic scientist.” Still, I glanced automatically down. It was either an old specimen, or had been weathered extensively; the bone was smooth, with a gloss that fresh specimens never had, stained and discolored by the leaching of pigments from the earth. “Oh, all right.” I turned the skull slowly in my hands, watching the bones, naming them each in my mind as I saw them. The smooth arch of the parietals, fused to the declivity of the temporal, with the small ridge where the jaw muscle originated, the jutting projection that meshed itself with the maxillary into the graceful curve of the squamosal arch. She had had lovely cheekbones, high and broad. The upper jaw had most of its teeth—straight and white. Deep eyes. The scooped bone at the back of the orbits was dark with shadow; even by tilting the skull to the side, I couldn’t get light to illuminate the whole cavity. The skull felt light in my hands, the bone fragile. I stroked her brow and my hand ran upward, and down behind the occiput, my fingers seeking the dark hole at the base, the foremen magnum, where all the messages of the nervous system pass to and from the busy brain. Then I held it close against my stomach, eyes closed, and felt the shifting sadness, filling the cavity of the skull like running water. And an odd faint sense—of surprise?
“Someone killed her,” I said. “She didn’t want to die.”
I opened my eyes to find Horace Thompson staring at me, his own eyes wide in his round, pale face. I handed him the skull, very gingerly. “Where did you find her?” I asked. Mr. Thompson exchanged glances with Joe, then looked back at me, both eyebrows still high.
“She’s from a cave in the Caribbean,” he said. “There were a lot of artifacts with her. We think she’s maybe between a hundred-fifty and two hundred years old.”
“She’s what?” Joe was grinning broadly, enjoying his joke. “Our friend Mr. Thompson here is from the anthropology department at Harvard,” he said. “His friend Wicklow knows me; asked me would I have a look at this skeleton, to tell them what I could about it.” “The nerve of you!” I said indignantly. “I thought she was some unidentified body the coroner’s office dragged in.” “Well, she’s unidentified,” Joe pointed out. “And certainly liable to stay that way.”[...]
“Oh, de headbone connected to de…neckbone,” Joe sang softly, laying out the vertebrae along the edge of the desk. His stubby fingers darted skillfully among the bones, nudging them into alignment. “De neckbone connected to de…backbone…” “Don’t pay any attention to him,” I told Horace. “You’ll just encourage him.” “Now hear…de word…of de Lawd!” he finished triumphantly. “Jesus Christ, L. J., you’re somethin’ else! Look here.” Horace Thompson and I bent obediently over the line of spiky vertebral bones. The wide body of the axis had a deep gouge; the posterior zygapophysis had broken clean off, and the fracture plane went completely through the centrum of the bone. “A broken neck?” Thompson asked, peering interestedly. “Yeah, but more than that, I think.” Joe’s finger moved over the line of the fracture plane.
“See here? The bone’s not just cracked, it’s gone right there. Somebody tried to cut this lady’s head clean off. With a dull blade,” he concluded with relish.
Horace Thompson was looking at me queerly. “How did you know she’d been killed, Dr. Randall?” he asked. I could feel the blood rising in my face. “I don’t know,” I said. “I—she—felt like it, that’s all.” “Really?” He blinked a few times, but didn’t press me further. “How odd.” “She does it all the time,” Joe informed him, squinting at the femur he was measuring with a pair of calipers. “Mostly on live people, though. Best diagnostician I ever saw.” He set down the calipers and picked up a small plastic ruler. “A cave, you said?” “We think it was a…er, secret slave burial,” Mr. Thompson explained, blushing, and I suddenly realized why he had seemed so abashed when he realized which of us was the Dr. Abernathy he had been sent to see. Joe shot him a sudden sharp glance, but then bent back to his work. He kept humming “Dem Dry Bones” faintly to himself as he measured the pelvic inlet, then went back to the legs, this time concentrating on the tibia. Finally he straightened up, shaking his head. “Not a slave,” he said. Horace blinked. “But she must have been,” he said. “The things we found with her…a clear African influence…” “No,” Joe said flatly. He tapped the long femur, where it rested on his desk. His fingernail clicked on the dry bone. “She wasn’t black.” “You can tell that? From bones?” Horace Thompson was visibly agitated. “But I thought—that paper by Jensen, I mean—theories about racial physical differences—largely exploded—” He blushed scarlet, unable to finish. “Oh, they’re there,” said Joe, very dryly indeed. “If you want to think blacks and whites are equal under the skin, be my guest, but it ain’t scientifically so.” He turned and pulled a book from the shelf behind him. Tables of Skeletal Variance, the title read. “Take a look at this,” Joe invited. “You can see the differences in a lot of bones, but especially in the leg bones. Blacks have a completely different femur-to-tibia ratio than whites do. And that lady”—he pointed to the skeleton on his desk—“was white. Caucasian. No question about it.”

I arrive at the storefronts in which I will meet my friends. I am 30 minutes early due to miscommunication, but it is 107 F out. I retreat to the safety of the AC and, not very acquianted with the wider world of Comics, I enter the comic store and attempt to not appear out of place.
20 minutes go by and I am clocked very well as lost, explaining that I am waiting for friends. I squint at the sci-fi section once the surveyor leaves and diligently pick through titles with great ponderance.
Before I depart, I, in my puffy white ren-faire shirt, jean-pocket clipped round frame sunglasses, and lost wrong-nerd presence, ask if they have the Noir Spiderman run. 2009 I add quickly. They look at me queerly and assert, no, I've never heard of that? Sorry. I leave.
#blogcat: transmissions#got 'once upon a time at the end of the world' btw cause rhe art looked nice. and it is! not super standout but the mcs are lovable

Autistic YA Book Recs
I work in the youth services department at my local library, and I'm looking for YA book recommendations for Autism Acceptance Month! I've got a decent list going, with roughly half of them having openly autistic authors, but I'm curious to know more. Non-fiction, fiction, graphic novels - as long as it's YA, I wanna know about it! Here are a few books I've got on my list:
Hell Followed With Us - Andrew Joseph White (I would include The Spirit Bares Its Teeth, but my library doesn't have a copy)
Unseelie - Ivelisse Housman
Queerly Autistic - Erin Ekins
The Boy Who Steals Houses - C.G. Drews
This Is Where It Ends - Marieke Nijkamp
The Luis Ortega Survival Club - Sonora Reyes
Sincerely Your Autistic Child (an anthology)

Happy Pride! In this episode of the podcast, we explore the varied gender identities of Viking witches. While the modern stereotype of Vikings is that that of the masculine warrior and dutiful wife, grave goods found at several sites illustrate the fluidity of gender in the Nordic and Icelandic world!

I got a cute flash tattoo the other night at a Night Market event. It's of a little walking mushroom:
A nice memento for the night's events. My friends were vending there (they sell pins, patches, prints, etc.). The name of their business is Queerly Departed.
The event was packed and a lot of fun. I'm so glad I went. This is my second tattoo, but my first time using second skin, and it works great! I really love it!

COVER REVEAL
We are excited to reveal the cover for DOPPEL BANGER by Sarah Robinson releasing 10/15!
#PreOrderHere: https://booksbysarahrobinson.com/books/doppel-banger/
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Firefighter by day, drag queen by night.
This one of a kind standalone romantic comedy in the Queerly Devoted series by Sarah Robinson is a boundary pushing bisexual romance as firefighter Mike Dougherty—stage name Madame Michelle in drag—meets Isa Reyes, a Filipina crisis management professional who has no interest in adding any more drama to her life.
Isa Reyes is five foot two and exists solely on her father’s lumpia and her mother’s cynicism to fuel her sixty hour work weeks in crisis management. When she’s not working behind the scenes on the latest political scandal, hostile corporate takeover, or bailing a client out of jail, Isa finds herself sitting on the sidelines of her best friends’ lives. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Isa is tired of watching life pass her by and is determined to find the perfect alpha male to ride off into the sunset with.
In walks the alpha male of all alpha males—Michael Dougherty, lieutenant firefighter at DC Fire & EMS and Mr. July in the charity firefighter calendar, and her new point of contact for her contract. It’s her job to fix the department’s reputation and he’s there to give her everything she needs…in more ways than just professional. But there’s a lot more to Mike than meets the eye and when she runs into him on stage in a very different context, she realizes that everything she thought she wanted in a man might be in question.
Battling the expectations of her family, the professionalism of her job, her lifetime living on the sidelines, and the pull of her heart, Isa navigates her own stereotypes as she takes a leap onto center stage.

A father's words — always in the precipice of mind and searing more harshly than physical wounds. Even without the knowledge that he himself was the result of a genetic experiment of man and monster , Sephiroth was no child of ignorance and knew he had been subjected to strange things. As horrid as his upbringing was , there was also a vile knowledge that there were other horrors lingering inside the mind of his father . . on the other side of walls he shared. When curiosity had infiltrated his mind as it did with the minds of children , his face was met with the gaunt angles of a vulture and the glint of glasses. As coolly as a man ordering a coffee at a local cafe , he had said " curiousity will rip your arm from its socket , and I won't be there to stop them. "
All it took was a single glance inside the eyes of Professor Hojo to know the monstrosity lying within mind and actualized by hands. It was not until his adulthood did Sephiroth take to wandering the science department at ShinRa , and it wasn't precisely due to curiousity which had never been satiated — for the sake of the safety of others , he needed to know what terrors were to be discovered. Hojo was smart however , nothing which would give way to the Jenova project or Sephiroth's experimentations were ever kept in the open. Even without Jenova discoveries at hand , there were plenty of other things to be found most of which hinted at sadism. Cages , chains , vials of queerly coloured substances , soiled medical restraints , bins and bins of medical waste.
Sephiroth's footsteps echoed inside eerie rooms and hallways as he continued forward. Forward and forward. Was he purposefully searching for anything to justify raising a hand to the man who had so cruelly forged him? Sephiroth could not say or would not. Authorized personnel signs were ignored , and the prodigal creation passed from one door to the next , seemingly passing through nine different doors [ meant to keep someone out or something in ] before he reached an especially unique room. While still being inhospitable , there was also a strange alluring undertone to the space.
Hues of greens and blues shimmered off the walls , and so unexpected it was it took Sephiroth several moments before he realized it was the reflection of moving water being cast upon walls. A room which was not quite a room was impressively expansive , far wider and taller than the rest of the halls he had passed through. Beyond control panels and monitoring devices , a tank filled with water immediately caught the eye. Serene and eerie in one. Even before realizing a living form was within , the silver haired man approached ; a moth drawn to a flame. The sudden appearance of face and body from within the waters did no startle nor alarm though the man's brow furrowed.
❛ What have you done now . . ❜
Sephiroth spoke to a Hojo who was not there ; voice just barely above a whisper. Gloved right hand reached for the cool surface of the glass encasing water and whatever it was which lived inside @mcrroww. Half of him expected hand to penetrate glass to touch the creature within which made no degree of sense . . but he had thought it possible . . for a second. He ceased looking past her and feline eyes focused on the creature's face with a gaze of curiosity and pity.
❛ . .What are you? ❜

I don’t see this addressed in the article linked, though I assume it’s addressed in the research being discussed — what methods were used to assign sex to all these early English remains?
I’m thinking of Lee Colwill’s article “The Queerly Departed”, which discusses closely-related issues. Colwill notes that a minority of remains from a similar period in Scandinavia have been chromosomally sexed, and that many have not even been osteologically sexed. In short, there are a number of remains that were identified as male solely on the grounds of “the grave contains Man Things (e.g., sword)”, or as female because “the grave contains Woman Things (e.g., brooch)”. Later work has sometimes contradicted those original assumptions — most famously the burial at Birka (grave Bj 581) that was identified as male in the 19th century because the burial goods were those of a warrior, but more recently was identified as female by people actually sexing the remains. (Whether this means “weapons = man” is not a reliable method, or it means the person in question was gender-nonconforming, or both is up to interpretation, I think.)
Osteological sexing is limited of course, and chromosomal sexing fails to account fully for intersex individuals, and neither can be used to assess gender identity for obvious reasons, but this is still data that would be good to have. If we’re looking at trends regarding male & female grave goods, “how were all these remains sexed” is information we should know because it’s kind of the best we can do without necromancing the remains and conducting interviews.
The reason I bring this up is not because I think the remains being mentioned as outliers have been misidentified, but rather the other way around: I’m wondering if there are more remains whose burial goods do not conform to assumed gender standards. How many more Bj-581-esque remains are out there where someone just wrote down “male” or “female” based on Victorian gender norms and we never doublechecked?
The article says, “for the most part, the pattern fits” — I want to know how sure we are about that.
Anyway, if whoever runs this Tumblr account has a line to the researcher working on this, it would be cool if you could pass on their approach to this issue.
The burials that could challenge historians' ideas about Anglo-Saxon gender
There are a significant number of Anglo-Saxon burials where the estimated anatomical sex of the skeleton does not align with the gender implied by the items they were buried with. Some bodies identified as male have been buried with feminine clothing, and some bodies identified as female have been found in the sorts of "warrior graves" typically associated with men.
In the archaeology of early Anglo-Saxon England, weaponry, horse-riding equipment and tools are thought to signal masculinity, while jewelry, sewing equipment and beads signal femininity. And, for the most part, this pattern fits.
So far though, no convincing explanation has been put forward for the burials which appear to invert the pattern. My Ph.D. research asks whether looking at these atypically gendered burials through the lens of trans theory and the 21st-century language of "transness" has the potential to improve historians' understanding of early Anglo-Saxon gender. Read more.

Queer head-canon
Making this list was/is a very self indulgent activity for me. I came out fairly recently and this us kinda my fun passion project atm as far as rec lists go. I wanted to put together a list of all the queer reylo fics I've read (am reading atm) - I know there's the "Queerly Beloved Reylo" collection on Ao3, which has WAY MORE fics on there, but like I said I'm basically making this list for myself first and I'm gonna be updating it as often as possible. I really don't care if no one likes this list since it's something I'm making for myself. Buuut hopefully people can get some great fics off here!! 😌💖🏳️🌈
If you lead me from the shore by @howls-immobile-bungalow: The seas run rampant with pirates. Islanders live in fear of the sight of the Jolly Roger. To escape an arranged marriage, Rebecca Palpatine, also known as ‘Rey’, disguises as a man and enlists on a ship, which leads to being under command of the dreaded and fearsome pirate, Captain Kylo Ren. Through living under disguise, and getting dangerously close to the Captain, Rey will explore and discover his identity as a trans man, and his understanding of his place in the world will change forever.
How to Be a Heartbreaker by @littlestarlost: Rey is a black widow. Ben is her new husband. Things aren't quite going to plan.
Thanks for the feedback by antlersantlers: Name? Age? Is this the first time you fucked Ben? Did you cum? Would you fuck Ben again? Are you a… top / switch / bottom? What is your gender identity? What is your sexual orientation? Please rate your overall satisfaction 1-10. Please write any additional feedback on the opposite side.
Hold Me Up (In The Palm Of Your Hand) by violethoure666 -> @multishiptrashh: Rey is sent to live with her aunt and uncle at eleven after the unexpected death of her father Luke. Thank god for her cousin Ben. A slow burn, no age gap, coming of age story following Ben and Rey from eleven to nineteen.
You're Not Alone by @howls-immobile-bungalow: Not your everyday College/Coffee Shop AU. Ben Solo is a creative writing major (stage name Kylo Ren), has a rock band called the Knights of Ren, and he's a trans guy out and proud since childhood. Rey Jakku is a mechanical engineering major and a trans girl still in the closet. But that's about to change for her when she meets a hot barista attending the same school as her.
The Villain I Appear to Be by Leo_Rosa: When the young idealist Sociology major Rey Johnson and the jaded and cynical Political Sciences postdoctoral fellow Ben Solo met, it was hate at first sight. But grief and desire connect them in a twisted, powerful, and secret bond, showing them just how much two lonely souls have in common, in spite of all differences that divide them. When Professor Snoke, Ben's mentor, decides to ruin Rey's life and her career, their relationship is tested – as well as their beliefs.
meet me in the aftergloom by @diesirate: Weddings are supposed to be beginnings. But not to Rey. They're endings. This one is, anyway. Or, one winter night that changes Rey Niima's life. And Ben Solo's too.
To Love Shadows and Marvels by midwinterspring: A modern startup AU with Lovecraftian elements.
Lots More by MissCoppelia: Rey and Ben are ready for another year of sexy fun at their famous annual Purim party. This year they've been planning for an orgy, which Ben is looking forward to, but does Rey feel the same?
The Dinner Party by DarkKnightDarkSide: It's Rey's 30th birthday, and her husband Ben wants to give her the most unforgettable evening. All she wants, though, is a low key night in with some good friends. Some very good friends.
the eye has to travel by @secretreylotrash: Kylo Ren is the head of the Costume Department for the Star Alliance Opera. Rey is his beleaguered assistant. It’s hell. She’s slowly crumbling under endless hours of work and impossible standards. Being a broke post-grad, their most recent argument is fought over the condition of Rey’s personal wardrobe and her inability to find anything appropriate for the Opening Night Gala this season. Kylo insists he’s handled the problem by making her dress himself, but has he? It just seems like he's making Rey stay late after work out of spite, for hours of fittings, alone with him.
Checklists and Promises by @crossingwinter: Rey's new to being a Domme, and when she comes across Kylo's sub profile, she worries she doesn't have enough experience for him. Kylo has ten years of experience subbing, after all. Soon enough, though, it's clear that even if she's something Kylo wants, she might also be someone that he needs.
(this will definitely be updated so stay tuned)

Paranormal Pin Pals
My friends currently have a kickstarter going for their business. The name of their business is Queerly Departed. It’s a small, queer (obviously, lol) business that is made up of all ace identifying individuals, myself included (though, I just help manage their social media).
Their business’ current kickstarter is called “Paranormal Pin Pals,” like the title of this post, and the goal of the project is to create a set of spookycute North American based cryptid enamel pins. So far the kickstarter has been going well. They have gotten all the initial Paranormal Pin Pals unlocked:
So now they are working on stretch goals. The first stretch goal is for another cryptid pin, this time for the Jackalope:
It’s so cute! Their kickstarter funding is currently at $1,739 (the Jackalope needs $1,900) and they still have 23 days to go and make it happen. A clear breakdown of expenses can be found on the kickstarter page.
They also make it clear on their kickstarter page (which goes by Paranormal Pin Pals like the title of this post) that since everyone in the business (myself included) is white, they will not be making pins for:
W*ndigo
Roc/ Thunder Bird
Wumpus Cat
Pukwudgie
Among others. Something that was also discussed is how they will be avoiding any cryptids that creep into the realm of ableism, for example: melon heads.
Tumblr hates links and I want this post to reach as many people as possible, so I will not be posting the link. However, if you would like to become a backer for this project and help fund it in any way, just go to Kickstarter and search for Paranormal Pin Pals. My friends’ project will be the one and only result.
If you go and help back the project or even just signal boost this post, give it a like, or reblog it - it is all greatly appreciated! Also, if you made it all the way to the end of this post, then thank you for reading it all!

Some Fun Teacher AU tibits me and my friends came up with on call:
First, I think I have solid surnames I wanna use so we have (btw you are free to go with your favourites if you write for this au! I’ll still love them!):
Mr. Roman Prince - Gym and Drama (mostly coaches basketball, runs fencing club)
Mx. Virgil Blake - Music (former English teacher, had to change subjects due to stress, uses he/they)
Mr. Patton Foster - Woodwork and Home Economics (prefers sewing to cooking but he’s trying)
Mr. Logan Baird - English (is originally from Scotland because fight me)
Mr. Janus Dolon - History and Modern Studies (will absolutely destroy you in a debate)
Mr. Remus Duke - Art (he and Roman’s parents divorced and he took his mother’s name, originally went to college to be a crime scene investigator)
Mr. Remy Moreno - IT (has probably been to jail for )
Prof. Emile Picani - Science (mostly Biology, helps out with the other sciences too)
And now for more info! Most of this was born of a joke about Logan having a tattoo ehe.. [tw: drinking mention!]
- One day, Roman lets it slip to his drama class that Logan has a tattoo from he and Virgil’s band days. The class go WILD with this information.
- They immediately go to Logan to ask to see it but he denies it; “who lied to you” “I don’t have tattoos, they’re unnecesary and unprofessional”, etc. Basically he deflects it entirely.
- The students start to think Roman’s joking with them. Until sports day.
- Logan gets picked for the teacher’s basketball game and Roman rigs it for him to be on team skins. He’s reluctant but Logan hauls off his shirt and on his back is a full colour unicorn tattoo.
- Now the focus is on Virgil because they’re convinced he has to have one. Like he has lots of piercings and stuff so why not a tattoo? - And Virgil tries to get Roman to call off the hoard of students asking about it, but Roman thinks its so funny, he doesn’t ever tell the students that Virgil’s actually super anxious about needles.
- The tattoo talk reaches Janus (who has a half face tattoo of scales that he uses to hide his skin condition) and Remus (who has whole sleeves of tattoos under the beat up leather jacket he usually wears), and Janus is happy to add, “Oh, didn’t you know? Mr Foster has a tattoo too” - No one believes him, until Remus backs him up, “I tattoo’d him myself in college!!” and NOW they’re convinced.
- So they ask Patton and he’s like “oh they’re just teasing you, I’m too nervous to get tattoos!” and the students assume Remus was joking with them. But then one day Patton’s changing out of his cardigan and he’s wearing a tank top.
- And on his left shoulder is a tiny tattoo of a rat. Just a simple line tattoo. This is how Patton finds out he got tattoo’d by Remus while they were both drunk after finals. Patton keeps it anyway because rats are lil squishy babies and he loves it secretly. - Remy has tattoos of constellations on his wrists that match his freckles, and Picani doesn’t have tattoos but he likes to draw on himself with sharpies when he’s anxious. - Principal Sanders comes to visit the music department often, usually talking to Virgil and checking in, but almost everyone knows he’s only there to sneakily find ways to talk to another music teacher, Mr Flores.
- Virgil has told Thomas just to suck it up and go speak to him, but Thomas just tells Virgil he should take his own advice and Virgil can’t really say anything in response.
- Eventually, the whole staff work together to get them on a date. Turns out Nico’s also really into Thomas too.
- Joan and Remy get coffee every morning, they’ve tried to get Virgil to join them, but Virgil’s still bitter about the time Remy invited everyone to his sleepover in high school EXCEPT Virgil.
- The reason was super petty, Remy was mad Virgil beat him in the talent contest that year.
-----------
Thats what I have for now but yeah, I’m getting super into this AU!!
