who are your top 10 spider-man villains and why?
From the 1960s-2000s:
1. Doctor Octopus — the sheer coolness of a metal body and tentacle arms
2. Green Goblin — a lot of depth of character, I can't get enough of the alcoholism / parental issues combo
3. Carnage — just the general "really strong monstrous villain" thing
4. Mr. Hyde — probably just me, but in the 1960s stuff he was like the most disturbing villain?
From the Ultimate universe:
1. Venom — just the best
2. Puma — I liked the bit with him and the JFK rabbit
3. Kraven — fond memories of midnight fuckups with him
4. Jack O'Lantern — hilarious halloween revenge schemes

Has there been a change to the 'dismiss' function in the 'include followed tag posts' feature? Where in the past a dismissed post might show up after a few weeks or so, lately it seems to only dismiss a post for the current dash view, with the dismissed post more often than not popping up again the next time the dash is refreshed.
I dismiss posts either because I do not want to see the content in the highlighted post or because I'd like to see something new from the tag. Right now both outcomes are impossible as I keep getting served the same posts constantly despite dismissing them. If I visit the tag itself, it's clear that there are plenty of new posts being added, so it's not a question of there being no new posts to highlight!
This seems to be a continuous problem with any dismiss function on this site (dismissing recommended blogs seems to be a placebo function, too). This makes the label of the function v. its outcome completely at odds and quite confusing to both seasoned and new users alike. Is there any way to get the dismiss function to do what it implies it should do: dismiss the recommended post or blog from being recommended completely?
Answer: Hello, @queen-mabs-revenge!
Thanks for getting in touch with this. We believe this might be a bug, so we are running some tests to try and get to the bottom of it. We will be back in touch as soon as we have any updates for you—keep an eye here, on WIP, and over at @changes for news.
Hopefully we will have an update for you before long.
Best,
—Nicola and L

Ode to a Nightingale
Just posted a new one-shot based on a conversation w/ @queen-mabs-revenge on a post about Aziraphale's reading habits <3
Set in 1941, Crowley has fallen asleep on the couch in Aziraphale's bookshop after a very long evening of bombs, zombies, and wine. Aziraphale has recently acquired some new first editions of John Keats, and a few poems hit a little too close to home.
a wee excerpt:
Aziraphale stumbled backward, coming to his feet, and then abruptly collapsing into the armchair. He took a sip from his wine glass and picked his book back up. Where was he, where was he?
(Any line would do.)
O, for a draught of vintage! That hath been
Cool’d a long age in the deep-delved earth,
(He was skipping lines, he couldn’t quite concentrate––in his periphery, which he longed to ignore, he could see Crowley rising––)
Full of the true, the blushful Hippocrene,
With beaded bubbles winking at the brim,
Crowley pushed the book down into his lap with a single long finger, but Aziraphale didn’t look away from the page.
And purple-stained mouth;
That I might drink, and leave the world unseen,
“Angel,” Crowley said.
And with thee fade away into the forest dim:
Crowley took his chin in his fingers and lifted Aziraphale’s face to meet his gaze.

as someone whos got a romeo and juliet adaptation/sequel on the backburner, i have a question for you: What is your favorite part of this play? It can be themes, a scene, or a character or whatever else! Personally my favorite thing in it, at the risk of sounding cliche, are the themes of destiny and doom. I also like benvolio (totally didnt get him in ur quiz lol)
oooh!! well i mean the obvious answer for me is equally obvious i think lol
i fuckin love mercutio. so much so that even if im watching a version of r&j i don’t care for i’ll stick around at least until he dies lol
he really just cements the tragedy of it all to me. if the story were a romance he’d just be the silly best friend comic relief character, and, aside from the opening narration and a couple fights, r&j really can seem like a romance… up until mercutio dies. his death is a signifier of the tonal shift. the happy-go-lucky guy who brings romeo to a party and cracks jokes just died. you want comic relief? he’s dead.
and of course there’s the fact that he shouldn’t even be involved. he’s not a capulet or a montague. he’s related to the prince. not a part of the families. he’s a casualty. he was a friend to romeo and benvolio- two montagues- and he was invited to the capulet party! he’s how they got in! he had no enemies- he shouldn’t’ve died! hell, had romeo not come between him and tybalt, he might have lived. then romeo wouldn’t’ve killed tybalt, he wouldn’t’ve been banished, juliet wouldn’t’ve had to fake her death leading to well… everyone knows that part.
he only got into the fight to defend his friend’s honor. (well, to be fair depending on how you read the dialogue before the fight, mercutio might be pretty ready to jump into a fight for any reason lol) but still, he got into that fight because tybalt wanted to fight romeo, and he only died because romeo intervened.
what really gets me too is… no one seems to mourn him. sure, yes, romeo kills tybalt in revenge, but then immediately tybalt’s death takes priority. everyone’s freaking out about how tybalt died- tybalt is mourned. i don’t recall if mercutio is ever mentioned again. (edit: mercutio is mentioned when paris dies, romeo calls him mercutio’s kinsman, but that’s. still not much)
there’s also his iconic quote as he’s dying- a plague on both your houses. as he dies he goes out screaming about how both families are at fault, how it’s their own stubbornness that is causing all this. and if anyone listened to him, maybe things would’ve been different. but still, romeo and juliet (…and paris i guess?) have to die before anyone actually listens.
also, on a more lighthearted note, he is fucking hilarious. his whole queen mab monologue to make fun of romeo is a personal highlight, as well as his line like… quoting from memory here, “here comes romeo, without his ‘ro’ like a dried fish.” okay okay so this is when they still think romeo is into rosaline, hence the “ro” but also “roe” like fish eggs, but also meo is a word for “sigh” so he’s sad because he doesn’t have his crush with him all told with a fish pun. love this guy i aspire to be on his level
ooh, also, when a staged production (or other kind? it’s most common staged) uses red for the capulets and blue for the montagues, i love when mercutio wears purple. goes back to my earlier point about him not being either but still being friendly with both.
also speaking about very specific productions of romeo and juliet some mercutio highlights:
-in rómeó és júlia (personal fav version of mercutio) when mercutio gets stabbed, he bleeds, gets his hand covered in blood, and slaps romeo before he dies, so romeo goes through the rest of that scene wearing his friends blood and it really adds to it
-also in that version they give mercutio a rap verse that is in no other version and i think of it constantly
-he also keeps flirting with everyone and kisses both romeo and benvolio and tries to with tybalt
-i made a compilation of him in that version i never posted actually i should see if i can find it
-in the italian version of romeo et juliette mercutio kisses romeo as he dies and it’s really intense lmao
-okay actually just watch this video comparing different versions of le duel from romeo et juliette i’ll stop talking about those versions specifically lmao (and watch les rois du monde & la mort de mercutio on the same channel)
youtube
-in romeo + juliet he wears heelys and when he says “by my heel i care not” you can see them lmao
-in that version he also dresses in drag and i love it
-riff from west side story is not technically mercutio but he sings the jet song & cool and i love those songs so hell yeah
-okay i said i wouldn’t talk about versions of retj again but going back to my beloved hungarian version rómeó és júlia the guy who plays mercutio also voices the onceler in the hungarian version of the lorax and if i have to know that so do you
anyway i genuinely plan for my last words to be “ask for me tomorrow and you shall find me a grave man” so yeah love that guy and personally think this could have all been avoided had he started dating romeo and benvolio and hell why not have a toxic fling with tybalt what who said that
#sorry this isn’t more put together i was just streaming for four hours took like a half hour break and then wrote all this#i’ve definitely made these points before in clearer ways before i think if you go deep enough into my#romeo and juliet#tag you’ll find them somewhere in there#crazwaz posted#audience participation#<- my ask tag feels more apt than ever now lol

I was tagged by @red-hot-moon to list five songs and tag ten people! So here goes:
1. Carnavoyeur by Queens of the Stone Age
Little known fact I am obsessed with Queens and I adore the new album! This is my favorite track off of it–It's funky, it's catchy, it's groovy, it's sexy, it's nihilistic, it's Josh Homme at his best 👌
2. No Heart No Pain by OOMPH!
This one has just been coming up on my shuffle a lot lately and I'd forgotten how awesome this album is? The beat and synth here keeps the energy going here from start to finish. Wir lieben Neue Deutsche Härte 🤘
3. Mary On A Cross by Chez Kane
Unless you have been following me for like, 10+ years, you may not know that 80s Hard Rock is very dear to me? There are so many great artists in the revivalist movement and this song is an absolute banger 🙏
4. Hot Cherie by Hardline
Okay so, some original flavor 80s-90s hard rock/hair metal. This song has such a great buildup and chorus? It's just such an ear worm to me, I love it, no notes.
5. Beyond the Wheel by Soundgarden
Chris Cornell is an absolute fucking legend?? The vocal performance here just puts you in a chokehold and refuses to let go?? It's like some old god is rising from the earth and it gives me chills every time. I was lucky enough to hear it performed live shortly before he passed and it was an experience I'll never forget 🙏
Tagging... @mareyshelley @killingkueen @queen-mabs-revenge @ruiniel @starlightbards @morgana-lefay @ghostlysweetnight @zeco5000 @feuxx @sanguivorouscorvid or anyone else who sees this and wants to flex their flawless taste in music (yes, that means you, reading this! 🫵)

I fear Ted might go back to Kansa because of Henry and because Dorothy leaves Oz and Mary Poppins goes back to wherever she came from, so if the series does that, I couldn't really say it came out of nowhere, but I'm also really hoping as hard as I can that it isn't the case, because Ted needs his found family and friends, and thinking about him alone in Kansas (even with Henry and Beard) just breaks my heart, so I wanted to say I really loved reading your meta about it!!!
I'm so glad you liked it, anon! Honestly, it's nice to hear that I'm not alone in thinking this. There's been so much meta lately arguing that Ted will go back to Kansas - which, as you say, I think is both likely and something the story has set up long term - but it doesn't feel like many fans are talking about whether he should. Given how focused the show is on these bonds and the growth everyone undergoes... damn, it would feel really bleak to me if Ted were to simultaneously leave the community and effectively go back to where he started: Kansas, (American) football, a rocky relationship with Michelle, Henry. I'm just imagining a finale that carts Ted off to where he's not only got to deal with everything he's still got going on (anxiety), but also is smack-dab in the middle of new struggles (many more "Who's playing dad and giving Henry money?" interactions + "Oh yeah, I'm perpetually reminded that my former therapist broke his professional oath and is dating my ex 🙃"), all without the support system he's built. Maybe he'll have Beard with him but god, that's so depressing to me!! I'm praying the writers have picked up on all the negative implications here and the return setup is just a red herring... but I'm preparing myself for that disappointment. Unfortunately, Ted Lasso would not be the first show that got caught up in the idea of a circular ending, not realizing how much that undermines the core messages at play...
Also, I just want to highlight some of @queen-mabs-revenge tags on the post. I didn't have the energy earlier to delve into the intricacies of why the Mary Poppins parallel doesn't work for me, but this lays it out succinctly:
#fr the mary poppins point like the metas are great but it's the idea of it that just deeply depresses me#bc honestly in mary poppins — it's not about mary poppins when it comes down to it#you don't really learn anything about her life because it's not about her it's about the family she leaves behind#like it kind of would feel like a slap to be brought so deeply into ted's inner life and journey for them to pull a mary poppins#like part of the reason why it's ok when mp leaves is bc she's already practically perfect in every way#she doesn't need the family so it's ok for her to leave#you're not invested in her character growth bc she doesn't really have any#that very much doesn't translate over to ted's story!#he needs the richmond fam as much as they need him#it's qualitatively different!
Bolded for emphasis because YEAH. THAT. Mary Poppins is almost more of a narrative device than she is a character. Which isn't to say she doesn't have personality, but that she exists to forward the growth of the family she visits, not develop herself. That is explicitly NOT who Ted is. In fact, the show has gone out of its way to say that Ted's tendency to put everyone else before himself and power through life with an endlessly positive, one might say "perfectly perfect" way is deeply unhealthy. He's had a whole arc about unlearning that! So to have him just leave like Mary Poppins does... oof. As for the Dorothy parallel, that just feeds into what I was arguing in the original post: Ted no longer thinks that there's "no place like home." You can love and miss a place deeply while recognizing that it's no longer where you need to be and I very much think Ted has hit that point in Season 3.
Plus, uh... there's the fact that Dorothy's journey is all a dream and she/the audience realizes that every loved one she "left behind" was really just a fantasy version of the family she already had. Dorothy was only and always going home to her family, not leaving a new family because they're one-in-the-same. Ted would just be leaving, period. There's no real - and therefore superior - version of Rebecca, Roy, Trent, Higgins, Keeley, Nate, Mae, and all the boys waiting for him in Kansas.

hi frank! i'm so glad you're getting so much love in your twilight moments. you've made us all very happy and i think we'd like to try and make you happy as well as you head off into the sunset.
what kind of things make you the happiest?
Roughly speaking I am happiest when I'm able to figure out what's going on around me and manipulate my environment for my own benefit. That is, I tend to be happier when my actions are more effective, which I think comes from the feeling that I am "in control" of my own life.
However, there are many things that increase or decrease that control, and for me they seem to have the same sort of "relative" nature I talked about earlier. For instance, what seems to make me unhappier than usual right now is that my sense of control is being diluted by newfangled social networks. The most obvious example of this would be tumblr and twitter, which emphasize the idea that my friends and associates are much larger and less connected than they used to be. There's also the fact that I'm not sure how many of my tumblr followers are "real people" (as opposed to bots, "professional bloggers" or "trolls"), and that I'm never sure how people's likes, reblogs, and mentions of me are meant (positive, negative, or neutral?). These things don't affect me in any direct, meaningful way, yet they tend to make me feel more uncontrolled than I'd like.
Conversely, the fact that my tumblr followers, twitter followers, etc. are so numerous makes me feel like I'm better "connected" than usual, which is great. This is just the old "I've met more people" / "there are more people to meet" equation.
Which brings me to my other favorite way to "feel in control." One of the things I tend to do when I am feeling happy is to change my room's lighting and ambient noise levels. When I am happy, I tend to want to be curled up in my bedroom, with the lights dimmed down to the barest minimum of "how much light do I need to see?", and with only the ambient sound of traffic and birds outside my window. I guess that seems relaxing and comforting to me?
I also generally want to read books when I am happy (as opposed to watching TV, using the internet, etc.), although this is not quite the same as reading when happy. Reading is the equivalent of changing my environment in a more "tangible" way, which is why I tend to prefer physical books to e-books -- I can flip through them more easily, see what I've read and what I haven't read, etc.
There are many other examples of this "finding a way to change my environment to make it more beneficial to me" thing. For instance, I tend to have an easier time doing things if I can do them on the couch, as opposed to doing them while standing. This has something to do with the position of my head, but I can't say exactly what it is.
Another thing that helps me "feel in control" is if I have the opportunity to do something that benefits me and no one else. This is the essence of "working" for me -- unlike the vast majority of what humans do, work feels like it is really "for me" in some meaningful way. It's possible to view even sleeping as a kind of "relaxing work," since it feels like I'm forcing myself to rest instead of leaving the choice up to my environment. But it doesn't have the same "feel" as work, where I'm actively doing something and there's a fairly clear sense that the benefits are going to come to me and no one else.
(Of course, I could say this also shows that what I really value is "relationships that are highly specific to myself." Work is work because it benefits me, rather than a vague "me" that contains many people, or contains "everyone." Conversely, when I relax, I do so in such a way that it benefits me, and benefits everyone who shares my body. It's interesting that in a way "work" and "relaxation" are framed as opposite poles in our society, when to me it seems like they are both about making decisions that affect only one person -- me -- as distinct from "open-ended" or "non-specific" decisions like "should I spend time in X or Y" which are fraught with many social implications.)

The funny thing is that I had never seen tvtropes before the 2020 purge. I just didn't know it existed. I'd been told that it existed, but it was completely new to me, like people talking about polyamory in the US in the 1960s or something. It was already a cliche to disparage tvtropes and the people who used it. It was like being told that the sun will rise tomorrow -- not something I was going to believe until I saw it for myself.
This was just a few years ago.
swear to god some of y'all shouldn't have been given access to tvtropes since you don't understand them
oh man i think it’s an interesting resource to help crystalize leaping-off points for further deep dives into media analysis and criticism, but i’m always up for learning how to use it and other resources better if you wanted to help out!

Hamlet Liveblog 2011, ACT TWO
I found a notebook from college when I went through the text of Hamlet line by line, and now I'm sharing the best parts! Act One
Act II, Scene 1
People who deserve backstory: - Reynaldo - Polonius current Will: I have always been exactly this way, omg
2.1.64 "by indirections find directions out" - theme of the whole freaking play! Polonius is maybe not as much of a fool as he seems. Similar to Hamlet pretending to be mad
2.1.88-89 "he fell to such perusal of my face / As a would draw it" - he wants to remember her as she is before he loses it - and he knows he will
Why stage it like this? Perhaps it is more effective to see his madness through the eyes of someone else
2.1.100 "This is the very ecstasy of love, whose violent property fordoes itself" - now he believes that Hamlet loves Ophelia and that it's killing him to be repelled like this (Perhaps it is)
Act II, Scene 2
2.2.6-7 "Sith nor the exterior nor the inward man / resembles that it was." - what people see and what Hamlet contemplates
2.2.28-29 "Put your dread pleasures more into command / than to entreaty" - Rosencrantz doesn't understand why the majesties are not following the status quo - are they on friendly terms? He doesn't know
2.2.70 "Never more to give the assay of arms against your majesty" Does this mean Claudius has no more foreign relations to deal with? Now Shakespeare can move onto what he really cares about: the domestic/internal stage. current Will: This was partially correct! I was drawing a connection to Othello and Macbeth, where the foreign armies are defeated offstage very early on and never really come up again, and it's true that Fortinbras becomes less of the focus for a while, but he's still a threat on the edges of the play.
2.2.93-94 "Mad call I it, for to define true madness, What is't but to be nothing else but mad?" - You'll drive yourself crazy trying to figure out what madness is, or you'll avoid the question and never know if you're insane or not. In short, this place is a madhouse.
2.2.139 "He is a prince, out of thy star" - again with the celestial spheres and orbits!
2.2.160 "I'll loose my daughter to him" - she's a tool or plot device
2.2.174 "for if the sun breed maggots in a dead dog" - what does this have to do with honesty? When there's no integrity, lies grow easily; or a cute girl in the public gaze gets pregnant and diseased
2.2.201-203 Polonius: Will you walk out of the air, my lord? Hamlet: Into my grave? Polonius: Indeed, that's out of the air. Hamlet is considering his own mortality, but Polonius turns his comment into a joke
2.2.209-210 "You cannot take from me anything that I will more willingly part withal; except my life, except my life, except my life" Hamlet is tired of Polonius and his mindless words, and he's also still thinking of death, so he wants to die and finds it fitting that Polonius would be the one to kill him
2.2.215 Guil: My honored lord (formal) Ros: My most dear lord (impulsive and trusting)
2.2.234-5 "Denmark's a prison" - Hamlet's bound by fillial duty to seek reveng, and he needs to watch as his uncle slips into his father's throne and sheets "Then is the world one" - Rosencrantz is trapped by trying to figure out where he is and why, so he has no free will, no reference point, besides Guil, who's just as confused but more upset
2.2.242-43 "I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams" Okay, there's a lot of stuff here - hints of claustrophobia; wants to be king somewhere; is it the infinity of space that gives him the dreams, or would he already have them? universes within universes, relative sizes, and the suffocating distance between electrons nutshells associated with fairies and Queen Mab, which is appropriate since she blows men's dreams way out of proportion
(and then I tried very earnestly to analyze the whole "a dream itself is but a shadow" dialogue, but mostly through the lens of coming up with headcanons for Ros and Guil, which is not a very good critical lens actually, and twelve years later it makes approximately zero sense, so I'll spare us all)
2.2.256 "In the beaten way of friendship" - it's like a beaten path, so longstanding, but also maybe just there out of habit and no real affection; or beaten like broken down and in disrepair because he doesn't trust them and has bigger things on his mind
2.2.262-63 "Come, deal justly with me" - genuinely hurt that they don't tell him the truth, also perhaps an order to obey "come, come, nay, speak" - in some versions he actually says 'knave', which belies his claims of friendship earlier "What should we say, my lord?" - Guil is hurt by this; maybe Ros was gesturing and trying to communicate something, or he was trying to figure something out. Anyway, Guil was jolted into the present and remembered about delving
2.2.271 - "by the obligation of our ever preserved love" - Hamlet uses their prior relationship (may be present still) to pressure them into telling him everything. He might not really value them anymore and is jealous of the love they bear each other, (and wonders why he can't have the same with Horatio)
Question: Would R&GaD have gone any differently if they knew about the ghost?
2.2.282-290 He knows that man and earth and sky are beautiful "majestical" creatures, but can't feel it and sees it all as "this quintessence of dust"; "What a piece of work is man!" Is he admiring mankind (in theory) or is he judging R + G for being sneaky? Or mocking them because they have no "apprehension" at all? (well, fear, but no understanding)
2.2.439 "like a neutral to his will and matter did nothing" - unable to think or act, like Hamlet hesitates to just kill Claudius
oh, interesting, I thought that the Hecuba speech was foreshadowing for Ophelia losing her mind after Polonius is killed, and not Hamlet being preoccupied with Gertrude's reaction to her husband's death! I think this has to be because I was unfamiliar with the Pyrrhus and Priam story
The Player can stir up passion in himself for a fictional character, but Hamlet can't do anything with his real motive. All people are characters for him, so he can sympathize with any of them.
2.2.550-51 "If a do blench, I know my course" - somewhat overreactionary (sic), but better than not doing anything; of course Hamlet can make himself see anything (see Othello's "ocular proof")
#hamlet#polonius#ophelia#claudius#rosencrantz and guildenstern are dead#act ii scene 2 is Very Long#i left out a LOT of stuff that's either basic or uninteresting but there's still just So Much
