When she's done talking to you, she flops over like a puppet with its strings cut. I like the theory that her real form is a goddess, and her little child form was made to match Link in that game.

In the Victorian era Constance Sommers lives in, naturalists have all sorts of new difficulties with classification.

Plenty of creatures that are human-shaped, without being in the least bit human or sapient. No, we don't know why a range of completely unrelated creatures all happened to take on a form that is at least partially identical to our own. No, they do not have souls or feelings or higher brain functions. Please stop anthropomorphizing them, you're making science sad.

Because there are so many different kinds of fairies, all matching different kinds of flowers, there's debate about what they even are. Are they a million different kinds of insects that have adapted themselves solely to one plant (seems needlessly specific)? Are they plants--creatures generated by the flowers themselves and connected to their life cycle? Are they a handful of different species that can be morphed by their surroundings to take on characteristics that camouflage them?

Science hasn't bothered to explore those questions, because fairies have been surrounded by so much superstition and pseudoscience that they don't seem like a valid scientific phenomenon. Most men of science assume that fairies are superfluous--a strange phenomenon linked to flowers, but not affecting anything about the ecosystem--and that any observations about them are the imaginings of sentimental women and children.

Mermaids are like platypuses--technically marine mammals, but with so many exceptions to the usual rules that scientists get angry just looking at them. (What do you mean they give milk and have scales and lay eggs? Who designed this?)
