@ longtime followers, you thought you'd seen the last of this, did you?

Anyway, so it's been my unhinged desire to see every version of Jang Hee Bin since I was 12. I'm proud to tell my 12-year-old self that I've seen in more-or-less completion:

Currently watching 1988's 500 Years of Joseon: Queen Inhyeon and the 2002 version. Slide 2007's Shadows in the Palace and 2012's Queen Inhyeon's Man and all I have left to see is 2016's Jackpot and 2005's drama special How Sad it is, to be Forgotten!

Watching the 1981 version is like watching college students use clairvoyance to select future talents to shoot inside their $1.50 set complex and slapping on Court music. As in, the actors are carrying the show. The 1995 version improves on the 1981 in almost every way while using the same script but now comes with an unhinged energy best seen in the random montages and subsequent baby-throwing.

I don't have any impression of the '88 version yet but the 2002 is everything 12-year-old me hoped for, although a little dry at times. Everyone's seen the other versions from 2010 forward so I need not elaborate there. Still waiting for someone to find footage of the 1971 daily drama in some abandoned warehouse or something.

'Red Single Heart' Lee Joon and Jang Hyuk had a nerve battle.

In the KBS 2TV drama 'Red Single Heart', which was broadcast on the 9th, a nervous battle between Lee Tae (Lee Jun) and Park Gye-won (Jang Hyuk) was drawn.

He's technically a prince. He's part of the "Yeoheung Min clan 여흥 민씨" only a few mins are in it and it's the ones who are legit royal blood.

Day 20 brings us Choe Suk-bin!

The girl who would one day be Choe Suk-bin (a title; Bin was a high ranking consort; Suk, her personal title, meaning pure; and Choe, or Choi, her surname; as with many Korean women of the Joseon era, including royalty, her personal name was never recorded) entered the palace as a low-caste musuri, or water slave, during a very tumultuous period.  King Sukjong deposed and exiled his queen in favor of his favorite concubine, Jang Hui-bin.  According to legend, he heard a servant girl praying for the wronged queen. When he confronted her, she stood her ground, willing to be executed for the sake of the queen who’d treated her with kindness.  The king was lovestruck; he also began considering the idea Queen Inhyeon had been wrongly accused.  Regardless of the truth of the legend, Choe Suk-bin became one of the king’s favored concubines, and Queen Inhyeon was eventually reinstated.  Choe Suk-bin’s son with the king, Prince Yeoning, would eventually become King Yeongjo. As a prince, he was looked down on by many for his mother’s low birth, but as king, he was inspired by her memory to improve the plight of the peasants.  Choe Suk-bin has been a staple in Korean storytelling in the centuries that followed her life; my personal favorite is the recent k-drama Dong Yi, also known as Jewel in the Crown.

I love Queen Dowager Inwon!  I first got introduced to her in “Dong Yi”.  She became King Sukjong’s queen after Queen Inhyeon died and Jang Hee Bin had been deposed.  At first, I wasn’t sure if she was ally or foe to Dong Yi, but in the end, she turned out to be on Dong Yi’s side and protected her from those who would try to bring her down.  

In history, Queen Inwon was only a year older than King Gyeongjeong and seven years older than Prince Yeoning.  She was said to be very fond of her stepson, Prince Yeoning, and adopted him as her own son when he was about nine years old.  This effectively strengthened his claim to the throne.  It was even said that she protected him from being assassinated when he was just a crown prince.   However, I think in “Haechi” this bit of history was changed a bit.  Queen Inwon is a lot older in the drama and the adoption as well as the assassination attempt haven’t taken place, although there was a scene when she threatened one of the ministers opposing Yeoning that she would adopt him to stop them from questioning his right to inherit the throne.  In any case, what remains the same is her genuine affection for him.  

However, I think the drama has moved up the attempt to Yeoning’s life to when he’s already king and is presenting it in such a way that Cho Hong and Yeo Ji will become part of the Queen Dowager’s attempt to protect his life.  Through Heo Cho Hong, Yeoning’s former wineseller friend and now trusted handmaid, Queen Inwon has employed Cheon Yeo Ji as a court maid, with the express purpose of protecting Yeoning.  She sends Yeo Ji on secret errands, such as spying on the ministers, and allows her to watch over Yeoning without him knowing of her presence at all.

This twist in the plot only further strengthens my suspicion that the threat to Yeoning’s - now King Yeongjo - life will come in the form of the rebellion by Yi In Jwa, coupled with Prince Mil Poong and the Soron faction’s complicity in said attempt to overthrow him.  And that, in the process, Yeo Ji will sacrifice herself.  So many times now, Yeo Ji has said that she wants to protect Yeoning  whatever happens.  She was even willing to give up her freedom as a damo and live the restricted life of a court maid, if only she can be near him and watch over him.  

I just wish the drama would show how Yeo Ji ended up being trained as a court lady.  Was it because Queen Inwon was searching for someone close to Yeongjo whom she can trust and Cho Hong thought of Yeo Ji?  Or was it the other way around?  Did Yeo Ji secretly approach Cho Hong about her plan to enter the palace without Yeoning knowing, and the opportunity presented itself when Queen Inwon voiced her desire to look for a person she could trust to watch over her stepson?

Anyway, I love that the drama used what was recorded in history as Queen Inwon’s attempt to protect Yeongjo from his enemies and inserted the characters of Yeo Ji and Cho Hong in what she’s doing.  And I love that the Queen is presented as warmhearted and kind as she seemed to be based on history.

Removal of the Korean-Korean decree in China?…

Three dramas produced by CJ ENM, including 'Wise Prison Life', 'Another Oh Hae-young' and 'Queen Inhyeon's Man', started airing on Bilibili, the Chinese version of YouTube, earlier this month.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Korea and CJ ENM on the 8th, Queen Inhyeon's Man (2012) and Oh Hae-young (2016) started airing for the first time on the 3rd and Wisely Living in a Prison (2017) started airing on the 6th, respectively.

Wise prison life surpassed 2 million views within two days of its airing, ranking first on the popular drama chart. Queen Inhyeon's Man also took second place on the drama popularity chart with 870,000 views as of 11 am on the 8th.

The audience evaluation also recorded 9.4 points (out of 10), receiving favorable reviews.

Following 'Saimdang Light's Diary' and 'Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food' followed by three CJ dramas aired on online video platforms, the number of Korean dramas aired in China increased to five this year.

All three works to be aired this year have passed the deliberation of the General Bureau of Photoelectricity (broadcasting regulatory authorities) this year, and expectations for the lifting of the Korean War ordinance are growing.

Watching The Princess’ Man for the first time because I miss sageuks and I heard this is a good one. Had been curious about Moon Chae Won for the longest time, and with Criminal Minds about to be shown, I think this is just the right time to see this series. Hong Soo Hyun, who acted as Queen Inhyeon in Jang Ok Jung, is also here! I like her. It’s weird seeing Song Jong Ho in sageuk after Reply 1997, but he is fairing well imo. The first episode is promising, so let’s see where this goes. I hope I don’t get frustrated as with this as Empress Ki.
