The fabulous history of Cartier and the Royal Family
‘Jeweller of Kings and King of Jewellers,’ was how King Edward VII described the House of Cartier, half a century after Louis-Francois Cartier established what would become the jeweller of choice for British royalty.
Founded at 29 rue Montorgueil in Paris, the company was taken over by his son, Alfred, in 1874. But, it wasn’t until Alfred’s three sons – Louis, Pierre and Jacques – took the helm that Cartier would go on to supply high society with the finest of jewels.
Tumblr media
The French Maison’s relationship with the Royal Family began in 1902 after Pierre Cartier opened a branch in London at the time of the coronation of King Edward VII. One of the firm’s earliest royal patrons, after ordering 27 tiaras from Cartier for the event, King Edward VII rewarded the company with a Royal Warrant, making Cartier an official purveyor of jewels to the crown.

Edward’s brother, King George VI was also a great client of the firm, acquiring many pieces for his wife. As well as the numerous gifts, the Queen Mother also inherited several extraordinary Cartier jewels from Dame Margaret Helen Greville, the wife of the Honourable Ronald Henry Greville, 2nd Baron Greville, including two pairs of Art Deco diamond earrings. The Greville Chandelier earrings, composed of platinum and fancy-cut diamonds, were given to Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding present in 1947. The Greville Peardrop earrings, crafted by Cartier in 1938, are made of platinum and diamond, including two 20-carat pear-shaped diamonds, and were inherited by the Queen in 2002.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The most famous piece of Cartier in Queen Elizabeth II’s jewellery box, however, is undoubtedly the Halo tiara, purchased by King George VI as a gift for the Queen Mother in 1936. Gifted to the Queen as an 18th birthday present, over the years, the Queen has loaned the showpiece to Princess Margaret, Princess Anne and, most recently, the Duchess of Cambridge for her wedding to Prince William in 2011.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
'The British royal family was so important to the success of the Cartiers,' adds Brickell, 'not just in England but internationally and the pieces Cartier made for them remain among some of the most exquisite, well-known jewels of all time.'

11 Meaningful Pieces In Catherine’s Jewellery Collection That Belonged To Queen Elizabeth II
By Emily Chan
6 December 2023
Tumblr media
First worn by the Princess of Wales in June at the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan and Princess Rajwa Al Saif in Amman, Jordan, the Greville chandelier earrings were seen on Queen Elizabeth II throughout her reign.
The dazzling diamond earrings made by Cartier were a wedding gift to Her late Majesty from her parents – the Queen Mother had inherited them from Dame Margaret Helen Greville, a British socialite, in 1918.
Catherine was most recently seen wearing the jewels at a Diplomatic Corps reception at Buckingham Palace.
Tumblr media
On Remembrance Sunday this year, Catherine debuted a pair of diamond and pearl leaf earrings that were previously seen on the Queen during a visit to Nigeria back in 2003.
Some experts believe that the earrings may have been detachable pieces from the brooch featuring the same design.
Tumblr media
Commissioned by King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II’s Festoon necklace features 105 loose diamonds that her father inherited when he ascended the throne.
Featuring three strands, the monarch wore the piece on numerous occasions throughout her life, from attending state banquets to posing for official portraits.
The Princess of Wales paid tribute to Her late Majesty by wearing the piece for the official Coronation photograph when King Charles III officially assumed the throne on 6 May.
Tumblr media
The Princess of Wales wore Queen Elizabeth II’s three-strand pearl necklace – an item Her Majesty was famous for – during a Buckingham Palace lunch for the governors-general of the Commonwealth nations prior to the monarch’s funeral in September 2022.
Tumblr media
The then Princess Elizabeth received this jaw-dropping diamond necklace by Cartier from the Nizam of Hyderabad as a wedding gift in 1947.
Featuring a rose motif, the royal picked the necklace herself, along with a matching floral tiara.
The Princess of Wales first wore the statement piece at a gala for the National Portrait Gallery in 2014, before rewearing it at a Buckingham Palace reception for the Diplomatic Corps in 2019.
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II was first photographed wearing these diamond and pearl earrings during her Silver Jubilee celebrations – marking 25 years on the throne – in 1977.
Catherine has sported the earrings a number of times in the past, including after Prince Louis’ birth in 2018 and while visiting Commonwealth troops ahead of the Queen’s funeral.
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II commissioned royal jeweller Garrard to create this four-strand pearl and diamond choker, using pearls sourced from Japan in the early 1980s.
Princess Diana was loaned the piece for a state banquet in honour of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1982, while the current Princess of Wales has worn the necklace on several occasions, including for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s 70th wedding anniversary in 2017 and Her Majesty’s funeral in 2022.
Tumblr media
The Princess of Wales debuted Queen Elizabeth II’s emerald and diamond earrings during an evening reception in Jamaica in 2022, along with a matching bracelet.
Both pieces are from Her late Majesty’s emerald tassel suite, which the monarch first wore at a state dinner held for Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates at London’s Claridge’s Hotel in 1989.
Tumblr media
First worn by Queen Elizabeth II during the 1990s, the Princess of Wales has borrowed Her late Majesty’s diamond and pearl leaf brooch a number of times over the years, including on a visit commemorating the Battle of Passchendaele in Belgium in 2017.
Catherine wore the piece in tribute to the monarch while attending her funeral procession at Westminster Hall in September 2022.
Tumblr media
The sapphire and diamond earrings
The Princess of Wales borrowed Queen Elizabeth’s sapphire and diamond earrings for a visit to Edinburgh in 2021.
The sapphire earrings are part of a suite of sapphire and diamond jewellery by Asprey, which Her late Majesty added to her collection during the late 1970s.
The Bahrain pearl drop earrings
Featuring two pearls gifted to Her late Majesty by the Hakim of Bahrain as a wedding present, these diamond and pearl drop earrings were also worn by Princess Diana in the 1980s.
The Princess of Wales was first spotted wearing the earrings at a Remembrance Day service in 2016, before going on to wear them for Trooping the Colour in 2019 and Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022.

'The King of Gems' Is July's Birthstone
My journalistic objectivity seems to go out the window when I start writing about two of my personal favorite birthstones.  I have a deep affinity for the magic and multiple positive meanings of June’s moonstone, (which I wrote about last month) and the color and symbolism of July’s ruby, not to mention its starring role in history.
Rubies are the gems of which legends are made. And talk about stones with a romantic past!  They are the color of fire and blood and the gems most associated with passion and desire.
In both modern and antique jewelry, rubies are having a moment and continue to grow in popularity again. When Ruth Negga walked out on the Red Carpet in 2017 in an Irene Neuwirth’s x Gemfields tiara, created from different shaped Mozambique rubies, it became the lead of many of Oscar’s jewelry stories, including mine. And, it kick-started a renewed interest in the richly hued gem.
Tumblr media
Since then, more and more contemporary designers are partnering with ethically mined gemstone companies which specialize in rubies.  All cuts of rubies are also becoming a contender in colored gemstone bridal rings. It is a time when cultural aspects come together in past and present jewelry and fashion trends. Red in different permutations has been turning up on the international runways and worn at award shows for the past few years. Additionally, some epic rubies have been showing up on the auction blocks and in the showcases of some of the best antique stores and dealers at antique and vintage jewelry shows. They were widely shown during Las Vegas Jewelry week at  The Couture Show, Premier and The Las Vegas Antique Jewelry and Watch Show and Las Vegas AGTA Gemfair.

Tumblr media
A little history on the Ratnaraj, which in the ancient language of Sanskrit is the word for ruby or ‘king of precious stones’.  In Latin, the word ruby comes from ruber, which means ‘red’. Rubies were first traced to Myanmar—a source since 600AD and were revered by great European adventurers, gem hunters and experts including Marco Polo, and Jean Tavernier. These vibrantly saturated stones from pinkish red to pigeon blood were believed to hold the power of life. By medieval times they were worn as adornments and many thought them to be talismans that guaranteed wealth, wisdom, beauty, and everlasting love.
Fast forward on the 20th century and rubies became popular amongst European nobility, international icons and Hollywood actresses. Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Grace of Monaco, The Duchess of Windsor, Marlene Dietrich and Elizabeth Taylor all had ruby jewels in their collections, which told of their romantic lives and sentimental journeys or their regal legacies. (*see below). Whether they purchased these pieces themselves or received them as gifts, they were happy to show off jewelry designed for them by houses such as Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Verdura, David Webb and Bulgari. Throughout Hollywood’s Golden Age, film icons were regarded almost like royalty. So when magazines such as Photoplay reported that the stars were wearing their own precious gems in movies, it evoked an even greater allure among women wanting to emulate the favorite stars.
Back to the present, this firey stone with its radiating glow and intensity seduces like no other colored gem. Whether you are more inclined to choose those that have an irreverent vibe, are polished to perfection or pieces from 100 or more years ago, there is nothing that quite compares to the romance of rubies.

A bit of information about certain renowned rubies and the iconic women of style who owned and wore them :
Famous women who wore famous rubies wore famous rubies by the renowned house of Van Cleef & Arpels. These icons include Marlene Deitrich whose three-dimensional ruby and diamond jarretière bracelet (c.1937) worn in the 1950 Hitchcock film Stage Fright was made from a selection of her own gems. It was one of Dietrich’s most cherished pieces and the one jewel she still owned upon her passing.
Tumblr media
Van Cleef & Arpels also designed Elizabeth Taylor’s 8.25-carat ruby and diamond ring given to her by Richard Burton for Christmas in the 1960s.
The Duchess of Windsor a number of ruby pieces, but the bracelet of diamonds and rubies designed by Van Cleef & Arpels and given to her by the Duke of Windsor to let her know that they would be able to be together soon was not only a gorgeous piece but sentimental one as well and read “Hold Tight” on the inscription.
Other legendary pieces include those designed by Cartier, such as the necklace Taylor’s other true love and third husband Mike Todd gave to her in 1957, a  platinum, ruby and diamond necklace with round, baguette and fancy cut diamonds and cushion-shaped rubies.  Cartier created Princess Grace of Monaco’s diamond tiara with three detachable floral cabochon ruby and diamond clips set in platinum, which she wore in her official wedding photographs and then wore them as brooches together and separately throughout her life.
In 1973, Queen Elizabeth II wanted a tiara designed with rubies,  The Palace approached the oldest jewelry house in the world, Crown jewelers Garrard. Their mission was to create a piece for the Queen’s personal jewelry collection: the Burmese Ruby Tiara. The use of rubies and the fact that the Queen commissioned rather than inherited the piece rendered it unique from the other tiaras in her collection. The gems were originally a wedding gift from the people of Burma to then Princess Elizabeth in November 1947. They were designed into a wreath of roses.
There are many moments with Rubies that are imprinted in our brain. Wh0 can forget the 1990  Pretty Woman when Richard Gere’s character Edward surprises Julia Roberts as Vivian by taking her out to the opera. When Vivian greets him in a red off-the-shoulder gown, he has a jewelry box for her to open—and playfully snaps the lid of the case on her fingers (an improvised prank by the actor). Roberts lets loose that genuine big laugh of hers, creating box office magic. The necklace is a ruby and diamond dazzler, which was custom-designed for the film by French jewelry house Fred Joaillier. In the film, Edward tells her to be careful with it because he has hired the piece for the evening. Vivian asks him how much it cost and he tells her $250,000, which was, in reality, the necklace’s actual price.

REVEALED: The LIFE-CHANGING promise Prince Philip gave Queen Elizabeth II on wedding day - Express
Tumblr media
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary last November. The young Princess Elizabeth was bowled over by the dashing Philip Mountbatten from the moment she met him when she was just 13. She was determined that he was the man she was going to marry and the nation tuned into to the radio broadcast of their wedding in 1947 when she was 21.

As Prince Philip stepped into royal life, he also made another life-changing decision on the morning of royal wedding, when he gave up cigarettes for good.
Royal historian Sally Bedell Smith wrote in 2012: “The morning of the wedding, Philip gave up smoking, a habit that had kept his valet, John Dean, ‘busy refilling the cigarette boxes.’
“But Philip knew how anguished Elizabeth was by her father’s addiction to cigarettes, so he stopped, according to Dean, ‘suddenly and apparently without difficulty.’”
The Queen’s father George VI smoked heavily, which contributed to his final illnesses.

Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister, was also a lifelong smoker, and the habit would contribute to her ill health and death from cardiac problems in 2002.
Like his grandfather, Prince Harry was known to be a smoker, however he reportedly gave up cigarettes before his wedding to Meghan Markle last year.
Prince Charles famously abhors the habit and encouraged Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall to successfully give up.
The Queen’s former press secretary Dickie Arbiter told the BBC in 2016: “People smoked a lot more when the Queen was younger.
“Both her father and her sister smoked, but it never attracted her. It was something that just didn’t appeal.”

The Duke of Edinburgh’s touching gifts for his new wife did not end there.
He also gave her majesty a very special diamond bracelet on their marriage.
He directed the design of the large geometric Art Deco bracelet, by Philip Antrobus, which was crafted with diamonds from his mother Princess Alice of Battenburg’s tiara.
The stunning bracelet was worn by the Queen in her 2012 Diamond Jubilee portrait, and it was last seen worn by Kate Middleton for the BAFTA Awards in 2017.

This was a rare move for the Queen who often retains her personal jewels, and was widely thought to be a mark of affection for the Duchess of Cambridge.
Prince Philip also commissioned the same designers for the engagement ring which he gave to the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947, which also used the special Princess Alice of Battenberg diamonds.
The Queen’s engagement ring is a 3 carat brilliant cut diamond with diamond shoulders set in platinum.
The tiara Her Majesty wore for her wedding day was the diamond-encrusted Queen Mary Fringe, which the Queen Mother gave to her as her “something borrowed”.

The stunning piece of royal jewellery was made for Queen Mary, King George V’s wife, from a diamond necklace given to her for her wedding by Queen Victoria.
The royal couple also received over 2,500 wedding presents from well-wishers around the world, including 500 tins of pineapple from the Australian nation.
One particularly historic gift was a piece of Indian lace woven by Mahatma Gandhi.
King George VI and Queen Elizabeth gave their daughter a 19th-century sapphire and diamond necklace and matching pair of earrings, a Boucheron diamond and ruby necklace, and a magnificent pair of Cartier diamond chandelier earrings.
The royal family traditionally make presents of jewellery as wedding gifts, and the custom has carried on to the most recent royal weddings.
Prince Charles has given both of his daughters-in-law, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, jewellery on their wedding days.
He gave Kate a suite of Art Deco jewellery in white and yellow diamonds, while Meghan received a diamond bracelet from the Prince of Wales.
