The creative brief is already following brand guidelines by staying on brand with the colors and font they are using in their brief. Already consumers know who is talking to them from two simple steps, color & font. From the beginning, you know what the objectives are that Quaker is trying to accomplish: increase brand awareness, and market share for Quaker Oats Oatmeal, Promote the health benefits of oatmeal as a nutritious breakfast option, and encourage customer engagement and loyalty.
While there is no target audience they are trying to specifically target, you can assume the average 25-45-year-old, health-conscious individuals who live a busy life but seek to fulfill their body with nutritious meals would be enticed by this creative brief. On the contrary, it could also be well for families that are also in a time crunch but need healthy foods for growing kids.
The key message Quaker is getting across is, “Start your day off right with Quaker Oats Oatmeal- the perfect breakfast choice for a healthier you.” It engrains into the minds of consumers that they care for you and want to fulfill the needs of their consumers wants.
Their campaign theme “Morning fuel for champions,” creates a unifying concept that guides the creative direction, ensuring consistency and cohesion across various marketing materials.
Creative elements are displayed in the brief like visuals, taglines, and key features. This gives the creative team a clear starting point and direction for design and content creation. Their tone and voice are described, ensuring that all marketing materials have a consistent and appropriate style that resonates with the audience.
The objective in this brief is to create more sales for Quaker Oats. Ways you can entice your audience is using numbers and charts which are presented in the infographic. It makes readers want to learn more about what is going on.
Measurements of success are recorded by; an increase in sales revenue compared to the previous year, conversion rates from digital advertising, Tracking coupon code redemptions, and customer feedback and surveys to understand the impact of promotional strategies.

A couple of things that could benefit from changing the focus of wanting to change people's minds, but trying to relate to them in a way that has not been done before. magnolia, what job would you be terrible at and why?
I am absolutely convinced that I would have hated being in consulting. I was offered a position at a big 4 consulting firm TWICE and yet I turned it down both times because I knew I would have ended up hating who I was while there.
Point of no return! It was probably not the best career move in terms of career capital, but there are more important things in life than consulting.
(That said, I’m now broke in fucking academia with no benefits, no PTO. There’s that.)

Cakes On The Griddle
You would have to be off the grid completely yesterday not to know about the latest corporate response to racism in America. It was one thing when companies started sending out their email missives a week or two ago explaining their stance on racism. Then they all started forking over a few million dollars here, a few million dollars there, to aid the cause.
And now an American kitchen icon--Aunt Jemima--will be retired. Vanquished. Poof! Gone forever.
Suddenly, breakfast just doesn’t sound so good anymore.
Quaker Oats, which owns Aunt Jemima, and is owned by Pepsi farther up the food chain, announced it would send the beloved matron to the dust bin of marketing history come fall, with new packaging that initially removes her likeness, and then an entirely new brand name in 2021. It is one of the most ambitious rebranding efforts ever undertaken, made even more difficult because the product was never broken, and the brand itself was deemed to be out of step with modern corporate strategies and nothing else.
Never mind that the pancake mix is just a bunch of highly processed flour and preservatives, and the syrup a gooey glob of high fructose corn syrup. That’s the American diet, and a problem for another discussion.
Given the tensions following the separate police killings of George Floyd and Rayshard Brooks, Quaker, like many other US companies, responded by trying to distance itself as far as possible from any possible misconceptions of corporate intent. The result is the total obliteration of a successful brand, albeit one with the characterization of a black woman associated with homespun goodness.
Of course, no good deed should go unnoticed, and within only two hours, Mars, Inc., announced it would be rebranding its Uncle Ben’s Rice, which features a very refined black man on its packaging. Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup, manufactured by ConAgra, and Cream of Wheat cereal, made by B&G Foods, are also considering packaging changes and possibly rebranding.
The history of Aunt Jemima is long, and involves hiring a black woman--Nancy Green--as the face of the product a few years after it was created. That the brand itself is rooted in racial stereotype is without doubt, but because Green was so heavily involved and implicitly endorsed the product and its advertising, it has long been passed off as acceptable by many.
That’s not to say “all,” of course, as a small number of Americans complained about the brand and its depictions. I have long thought it was one of those racist things that a company got away with, maybe because it was just under most people’s radar. Until now.
From a marketing perspective, any rebranding is risky and expensive. Quaker is essentially relaunching its pancake mix and syrup line, and consumers will have to be educated all along the way. How they walk that tight rope will be interesting to see, because it is clear they wish to distance themselves from their past. This would be an excellent time for competing brands to seize their opportunity.
A Facebook post I made yesterday about the rebrand garnered dozens of comments, which, you might imagine, ran the gamut from “it’s about time” to “people are too sensitive.” Personally, I think it is time to fix something that has been wrong all along. It’s not that anyone is throwing away history; no, we are fixing what has historically been patronizing at best, and racist at worst.
Just because Aunt Jemima has been available since 1889 means nothing; it does not mean that the brand, its advertising, nor its imagery were in the right. Yes, it has sold well for more than 130 years, but we are now moving into a new period of enlightenment, itself a long time coming. In order to continue doing business in this new era, companies must adapt, and do so quickly.
Throwing money viscerally at black-oriented charities is not high on my list of things to do, though. But fixing what was wrong is, and Quaker Oats and its parent Pepsi are to be applauded for going to great expense--far greater than any donation--to make a product that is right for the time. Donations are easy, but Quaker and Pepsi have to have real skin in this game for their efforts to have any meaning.
And maybe now the color of that skin won’t be so obvious.
