In an exclusive media event at Heathrow yesterday, Qatar Airways showed off its Quite product on the only operating aircraft with the new seats. TheDesignAir was one of the very few media outlets allowed at this exclusive show around. Currently only available on the 777 aircraft, the QSuite – Qatar Airways’ latest business class product – will soon to be expanded to Paris, New York and a second London service in the coming months.
Jonathan Harding OBE, Qatar Airways Senior Vice President Europe, who led the show around, said: “We are immensely proud to introduce the QSuite on flights out of London Heathrow. This is a game-changer for Business Class travel and sets a new standard in the industry. The QSuite brings First Class excellence into the Business Class cabin. At Qatar Airways we always look to provide the best for our passengers – be bold, innovative and customer focused.”
While the current roll-out of the product is running at approximately one a month, we take an exclusive peek at what will soon become commonplace in Qatar Airways’ skies.
The Cabin
First impressions count. We are strong believers in this. The entire cabin has been refitted, it’s not just a case of new seats. The galleys are adorned with a beautiful fretwork and bulkheads in the Qatar Airways burgundy.
Apart from the large seat structure walls that line the aisles, that feel more like first class suites, everything is swathed in fabric and leathers that do well to offer a quietness, absorbing sound, rather than reflecting it.
With Qatar Airways mood lighting, it felt like walking into a very trendy hotel, rather than an aircraft, although the walls to the suites do make navigating the aisle slightly more tricky than usual.
Featuring 42 seats in business class, the cabin keeps the same amount of the seats in the forward section, thanks to the forward / rear facing concept that runs throughout the cabin.
The Seats
The actual suites themselves are vast, and offer an impressive amount of personal space. The forward/rear facing seats naturally have a slightly different feel depending which way you are travelling, but both are equally impressive.
The seat itself feels oversized, almost like a throne, when sat in it, with a high back which forms the major part of the bed when reclined. Thanks to a myriad of controls, the seat is fully customisable, with forward tracking, recline, seat massage and a Do Not Disturb sign.
Each seat offers plenty of storage, both hidden and table areas for laptops etc. The seats are also well supplied with a variety of ports and power, including HDMI, USB and even a contactless payment pad.
The personal table, which folds out to a huge sturdy table perfect for eating, is perfect for the centre seats, but not so much for the aisle seats, as the table, when folded out is immovable, meaning getting in and out of the seat if right next to the suite wall is virtually impossible. But that said, naturally the cabin crew are constantly on hand to help should you need to stretch your legs during service. Those on the inner seats (situated away from the aisle) have the ability however to slip out should they want.
Privacy is the most impressive element to the suites with each seat being cocooned in high walls. (Although an issue with passengers using the emergency release handle to open the door rather than just pushing it too is causing a few passengers to accidentally quick release the whole door panel off, but this is something that can be addressed as the product continues to roll out)
The high walls and large doors offer a great sense of privacy. Should a passenger want to travel by themselves, even in the 4 joining suites that make a “Quad” it’s totally possible, as the joining walls are fully adjustable. Centre dividers go down between seats, and even go fully down between the ‘double beds’ (which are then covered by a special insert to make the mattress seamless)
The dividers between passengers in the middle section, (forward rear facing) can also slide back, allowing for guests to communicate through the divide. Sadly, this element wasn’t passed on to the window seats, as this would have offered more options for passengers travelling together.
As for entertainment, the glorious Oryx magazine is now hidden away in the seat furniture, but a giant 21.5inch TV screen dominates the space, offering a fully immersive, first class entertainment offering.
Thanks to an increased seat pitch compared to the usual forward / rear racing configurations, each seat enjoys a small side storage unit which allows for personal belongings and the ability to stretch out when the seat is positioned as a flat bed.
While the addition of the ‘Quad’ is an interesting gimmick, which perhaps serves its demographic of middle-eastern families very well, probably won’t get as much use as the airline expects. However the advent of the concept has brought other benefits, such as flexible seating arrangements, large private suites, and storage a plenty to give passengers a real premium-business class product.
We were thrilled to see the product, and while we stand by our previous comment that it isn’t exactly bringing anything the skies hasn’t already seen before, they’ve managed to bring all the best bits together to make an impressive, unique cabin space, that is going to receive a lot of praise over the coming months.

Inside Look At Current And Future Emirates Airbus A380-800 Configurations
Emirates (EK) is the biggest Airbus A380-800 operator with 95 aircrafts in service and another 12 on order. While there are three published configurations, the airline actually have six different versions in operation today. We take an inside look at all the different versions available for travellers today and what the future will entail against its Middle East rivals.
Emirates Airbus A380-800 Story
The story began with Emirates placing an order of five passenger and two freighter versions of the doubledecker aircraft dubbed A3XX back in April 2000. By the time the Dubai based airline received its first aircraft on July 28, 2008 (Registration: A6-EDA), Airbus had a firm order of 58 passenger version of A380s (the freighter order was converted into passenger back in by April 2006) to deliver. While it was the second operator behind Singapore Airlines (SQ) to deploy this aircraft, it was the first fly between Dubai International Airport (DXB) to New York's JFK International Airport (JFK) on August 1, 2008. At the time, the aircraft was configured with three classes of service (first, business and economy) with 489 total seats. This was 18 more than offered than Singapore Airlines at launch with all the additional seats dedicated to premium class. In an airline industry first, Emirates equipped two shower suites for first class passengers. The second configuration was introduced on its sixth delivery in December 2009 with the goal to improve yields further and to operate on routes with capacity constraints such as London's Heathrow Airport (LHR). The third configuration was put into service from Dubai (DXB) to Copenhagen Airport (CPH) on December 1, 2015 (Related News - Emirates Brings High Capacity Airbus A380 To Copenhagen). The objective is to use this high density A380 to improve capacity for destinations that do not have a high premium (first and business) passenger demand or have more than one A380 frequency (Related News - Ten Markets Ripped For Emirates High Capacity A380 Service). This configuration also wins the award for the most seats on one aircraft operated by a commercial airline. At its introduction, Emirates mentioned that it will build more copies of the third configuration. In the past twelve months 4 out of 14 A380-800s delivered were in this high density configuration. Besides Copenhagen, the airline has been using the 615 seaters for flights to many destinations from Dubai (DXB): Asia Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport - TPE Suvarnabhumi Bangkok International - BKK Hong Kong International Airport - HKG Kuala Lumpur International Airport - KUL Shanghai Pudong International Airport - PVG Europe London Gatwick Airport - LGW Amsterdam Airport Schiphol - AMS Manchester Airport - MAN Birmingham International Airport - BHX Paris' Charles de Gaulle Airport - CDG Zurich Airport - ZRH Dusseldorf International Airport - DUS Barcelona International Airport - BCN Africa Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport - MRU

The difference are all in the lower level placement and does not significant impact passenger comfort.
Future
With its rival Qatar Airways (QR) introducing a new first/business class hybrid product named Qsuite (Related News - Qatar Airways Debuts New Qsuite Business Class on June 24), Emirates is pressed to innovate the now almost 9 years old premium seats on board its Airbus A380-800s. There is report stating that a new first class product will be introduced at year's end. It would not be a big surprise if a new business class product will also be showcased in tandem so that the cabins can be retrofitted at the same time. The new designs may require additional spacing which could reduce overall capacity closer to another rival, Etihad Airways (EY). Etihad Airways has the least amount of seats overall and is the only one with a three-room Residence seat with its own washroom and bedroom. It introduced the Airbus A380-800 service back in 2014 and will likely not have a design update announced anytime soon. While Qatar Airways showcased the innovative Qsuite for its Airbus A350-900 fleet (which does not have a first class cabin), the airline mentioned its 10 A380-800s (2 left to be delivered) will feature a different design due to wider fuselage dimensions. Look for this news sometime in 2018. Click to Post

Qatar Airways Eurasia Airshow’da Son Teknoloji Ürünü Airbus A350-1000 ve Gulfstream G650ER’yi Tanıtacak https://ift.tt/2HhWyPJ
Eurasia Airshow ziyaretçileri Qatar Airways’in ünlü Business Class koltuğu Qsuite’i de deneyimleme fırsatını yakalayacak.
Qatar Airways, 25 – 29 Nisan tarihleri arasında Antalya’da düzenlenecek Eurasia Airshow’da, en son teknoloji ürünü iki uçağının ilk tanıtımını gerçekleştirecektir.
Havayolu şirketi, çığır açan Qsuite Business Class koltuğunu içeren, dünyanın en ileri yolcu taşıma uçağı A350-1000’i tanıtacak.
Qatar Airways’in geçen sene kazandığı ödüllerin başında, Paris Havacılık Fuarında düzenlenen, prestijli 2017 Skytrax Dünya Havacılık Ödüllerinde “Yılın Havayolu” ödülü geldi. Qatar Airways bu global ödülün dördüncü kez sahibi oldu. Dünyanın pek çok yerinden gelen yolcular tarafından En İyi Havayolu seçilmenin yanında, Katar’ın ulusal havayolu, “Orta Doğunun En İyi Havayolu,” “Dünyanın En İyi Business Class’ı” ve “Dünyanın En İyi First Class Havayolu Bekleme Salonu” dâhil birçok diğer önemli ödülün de sahibi oldu.
Qatar Airways bu ayın başlarında, Lüksemburg’a doğrudan uçuş gerçekleştirecek Körfez’deki ilk havayolu şirketi olacağını duyurmasının yanında, hızlandırılmış gelişme planlarıyla yakında sefer başlatacağı uçuş noktalarını da açıkladı. Havayolunun uçuş gerçekleştireceği yeni yerler; Londra Gatwick ve Cardif, Birleşik Krallık; Tallinn, Estonya; Valletta, Malta; Cebu ve Davao, Filipinler; Langkawi, Malezya; Da Nang, Vietnam; Bodrum ve Antalya, Türkiye; Mikonos, Yunanistan ve Malaga, İspanya’dır.

Which Loyalty Programs Are TPG Readers Banking Their Points In?
With so many different airline and hotel loyalty programs, it’s difficult to choose which one to focus on — and in fact, it’s wise to keep points and miles in a variety of programs. The more options you have, the more likely it is you’ll be able to find a redemption that works for your needs when the time comes.
But not all points and miles are equal, and without a doubt, some are more useful to have than others. So we asked our readers in the TPG Lounge to tell us where they’re banking their points and miles right now, and why. Here are some of the more interesting responses. (Some comments have been lightly edited for clarification.)
Chase Ultimate Rewards
One reader signed up for a Chase Ink Business Preferred to use Ultimate Rewards for a first class flight to Tokyo. Photo by Getty Images.
“Ultimate Rewards. I’m saving them to take my husband to Hawaii for his 50th birthday in 2019!” — Melissa M.
“UR to transfer to United so I can go back and visit New Zealand again. My favorite place on the planet!” — Dorina M.
“Ultimate Rewards. Just opened an Ink Business Preferred for the sign up bonus to give us enough for our first ever first class flight: ANA to Tokyo in 2019 for our 30th birthdays.” — Anthony I.
“Chase UR! Even though I just spent 120,000 transferring to Hyatt for my Baha Mar stay, I still have another 160k.” — Rob M.
“UR… banked more than one million in the past 5 years, have a little over 300,000 after several flights purchased with points.” — Joseph J.
“UR. Currently at 162k and saving for my wife’s 40th b-day trip to Paris next year.” — Vanessa R.
American Express Membership Rewards
Membership Rewards are getting one reader a hotel in Hong Kong this year.
“I am trying to build up my MR [Membership Rewards] points with a few signup bonuses. Saving for business class to Europe for Oktoberfest and then start rebuilding for the 2020 Olympics.” — Michelle H.
“MR and UA [United Airlines]. Honeymoon at the end of 2018!” — Brandon P.
“I churn through rewards points pretty fast. Never let balances hit 200k… saving up for round-trip biz with Amex MR right now, but then it’s back down again. Can’t stand the thought of having so many miles and points that could devalue so fast. Gotta use them!!!” — Joey P.
“Amex MR. Planning to use the MR for a hotel in Hong Kong later this year!” — Ric P.
American AAdvantage
AAdvantage miles can be used to book premium seats on partners, such as Qatar’s Qsuite.
“343K with AA [American Airlines]. I’ve been stockpiling miles for years. Now I’m going to start using them for a year filled with as much travel as possible. I’m thinking some will be used for Egypt, France, and Chile.” — Becky B.
“American Airlines – just spent 300k points (saved over the last 8 months or so) on two round trip tickets via Qatar QSuite from JFK-Nairobi and back from Seychelles-JFK for our honeymoon in November. We are so excited and I’m not sure what I’m looking forward to more, the Qsuite or the safari in Kenya!” — Ted D.
“AA… planning to leverage for Qatar Airways and fly IAD [Washington DC] to SEZ [Seychelles].” — Patrick K.
“Since I don’t fly that much anymore, I buy AA miles when it’s on sale. I use AA miles in exchange for business class tickets to Asia on CX [Cathay Pacific] or JAL – 140k AA miles round-trip = ~$2500 – well worth it.” — Ariel K.
“AA 650K…deciding between Maldives and Fiji, used some of them for our trip to Antarctica next week…” — Debbie H.
Hotel Programs
One reader is planning to redeem Marriott Rewards for a room at the Ritz-Carlon Kyoto.
“IHG is my bread & butter since I don’t need fancy for work travel. Makes it easy to complete offers (like Accelerate). Usually earn 150k-200k a year.” — Mark S.
“Hilton – saving for a honeymoon someday! I’ve got somewhere up around 600,000 socked away.” — Caroline J.
“We’re banking plenty of Marriott Rewards to stay in the Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto Ritz Carltons.” — Jordan J.
“Starting to pick some up with SPG. I have begun using them primarily for first class flights and nice mini vacations before and after cruises. Pay cash for the cruise but use points to take advantage of the fact that we have to travel to a particular port(s) anyway, and have nice vacations there as well.” — Susan F.
“IHG and just used most of them to cover all of our hotels for our 2 week honeymoon in London, Liverpool, and Rome!” — Gretchen E.

Singapore Airlines Unveils a Massive First-Class Suite to Compete with Gulf Rivals
Singapore Airlines has unveiled a new suite for its 19 Airbus A380s. It will be on all superjumbos by 2020. Singapore Airlines
Skift Take: We expect Singapore's new first-class suites will be considered among the world's best products. But the airline still faces intense competition from Gulf and Asian airlines. It's not clear how much this cabin update will help on that front.
— Brian Sumers
When Singapore Airlines introduced its first suite in 2007, coinciding with the inaugural Airbus A380 passenger flight, it was a big deal. No airline had ever put a double bed on an airplane, and the product, with its opulent leather compartments, was so novel journalists asked if the airline would bar passengers from having sex on board.
A decade later, Singapore Airlines still delights long-haul passengers with that suite, and that makes for an impressively long run in an industry in which even the most advanced products become obsolete within five years. But it’s no longer the world’s most opulent product, having been eclipsed a couple of years ago by Etihad Airways and its first class “apartment.”
On its A380s, Etihad put two suites on each side of the upper-deck aisle, while Singapore’s decade-old configuration has four on the wider lower deck.
On Thursday, Singapore tried to catch up, introducing a massive new suite for 19 Airbus A380s, including five new aircraft set to arrive soon from Airbus. The first airplane with the new product will debut December 18 on the Singapore-Syndey route, though the airline does not expect every A380 to have the new update until 2020.
Singapore’s executives say the suites are 60 percent larger than what they replace, and each will have both a leather recliner and a single bed. Couples in some rows may combine suites to make an extra-large compartment complete with a double bed.
At its launch event in Singapore, the airline also introduced new business-class and economy-class products for the A380s, though neither is as innovative as the new suites. Business class does have at least one new fun feature — couples in center seats can combine seats to make a double bed. It’s similar to a new seat from Qatar Airways called the QSuite.
The announcement comes at a difficult time for Singapore. Once, it was the unabashed leader in long-haul luxury, but increasingly, other airlines have caught up, adding not only first class suites, but also over-the-top features like showers and onboard bars.
Like U.S. and European airlines, Singapore faces tough competition from the three main Gulf carriers — Etihad, Emirates and Qatar. But it also must compete for passengers with Chinese carriers, who still lag Singapore’s quality but have improved their products in recent years, while offering relatively cheap long-haul fares.
Interestingly, Singapore is spending roughly $850 million on the A380 cabins — a figure that includes research and development costs — even as it tries to pare costs elsewhere.
Last month, Singapore outlined a three-year program to make the carrier more efficient and profitable. Reports indicted Singapore was looking at more than 50 initiatives, including lowering fuel burn and offering more self-service options for passengers, as well as implementing strategies to reduce onboard food and drink waste. This announcement came several months after the airline reported its first quarterly loss in five years.
The A380 is an iconic airplane for Singapore, but it accounts for a small portion of the airline’s fleet, with many of its long-haul routes flown by Airbus A350s and Boeing 777-300ERs. Only one flight to the United States — New York to Frankfurt to Singapore — is operated by the A380. Other destinations from Singapore include Auckland, Beijing, Hong Kong, London, and Paris.
That means relatively few passengers will ever fly Singapore’s A380s. And far fewer will ever experience the airline’s Suites Class. But at Skift we love innovative airlines, so let’s look at the new products introduced Thursday.
Suites Class
The new suite has ample storage, including a space for handbags.
With its 21-inch wide leather armchair and separate 27-inch wide bed, the new suite looks more like a miniature hotel room than an aircraft cabin.
It comes with large sliding doors and adjustable blinds, offering unusual privacy, even compared to other first-class cabins. Passengers may control their suite’s lighting, just as at home. They’ll also have a 32-inch high-definition monitor to watch movies and television.
Travelers will be able to store belongings in the suite, rather than in overhead bins. Each suite will have a dedicated space for handbags, an important feature, one executive said, for female customers who didn’t like stowing their Birkin bags in a bin or on the floor.
In an interview, Singapore CEO Goh Choon Phong said the airline surveyed its best passengers and learned they wanted neither onboard showers nor a bar, so unlike Etihad and Emirates, Singapore will have neither.
“They wanted more space,” he said. “They wanted more privacy. They wanted more convenience, like in where to place things. And they wanted more comfort. This is exactly what we have given them.”
The suites cabin will be much smaller than today’s, with only six seats, compared to 12, and it’ll be upstairs rather than on the lower deck. Having a dozen suites was probably too many, since the market of potential passengers willing spend $10,000 or more on a round-trip ticket is small, said Brendan Sobie, the Singapore-based chief analyst for CAPA – Centre for Aviation.
“What they have discovered is the load factor is quite low,” he said, adding that profitability likely will improve as Singapore sells a greater percentage of seats in a smaller cabin.
And even if Singapore doesn’t sell every seat, the airline might find that having an over-the-top cabin will help it sell more seats in business class and even economy class. Prospective customers might be intrigued by suites, and make assumptions that other cabins also will be luxurious.
“It can have a halo effect,” Sobie said. “There’s always this unquantifiable benefit you get with these types of products.
One potential issue: The new suite is being manufactured by Zodiac Seats UK. In recent months, United Airlines has complained that Zodiac has been behind schedule on its new Polaris class seats. But on Thursday, Singapore executives said they had no concerns about timely delivery of the product.
Business class
Singapore Airlines has long had one of the world’s most luxurious business classes, but its seats have one main drawback. Unlike most others, passengers cannot recline their seat into a bed. Instead, to convert it, they must stand up and flip the seat over.
That approach may produce a more comfortable bed, but it’s a slight inconvenience. And since it takes time to make the switch, it essentially requires to passengers to make a commitment — Do they want a seat? Or a bed?
With the new A380 business class, Singapore has solved that problem. Its seat will recline into a bed. No flipping is required.
Singapore’s seat, designed by JPA Design of the UK and manufactured by JAMCO Corp. in Japan, is 25 inches wide and 78 inches long. It’ll have a 18-inch high-definition screen. There will be four seats in every row, and each seat will have unimpeded aisle access.
The seat is mostly standard, but has a few new features, including the larger bed that can be formed by joining the two center seats. The airline also said the seat will have more storage than usual, allowing customers to stow a full-size bag underneath it.
The new cabin will have 78 business class seats. Today, Singapore has two versions of the A380, one with 60 business class seats, and one with 86.
It is possible Singapore will add the same seats to other planes. But on Thursday, executives said they weren’t ready to announce whether they would retrofit other long-haul planes with the new product.
Economy class
Today, no Singapore Airlines A380 has more than 441 seats, but the new version will have 471.
While the airline will tweaked its business class and premium economy seats counts, many of the extra seats will come in economy class. On one version of the A380 — the one that is already more dense — Singapore will add 10 economy class seats. On the other, which today has more premium seats, Singapore will add 98 economy class seats.
Even with more coach seats, Singapore executives say cabin comfort will not change. Instead, they say, they’re being more efficient with how they use space. It helps that the suites will move to the upper deck, allowing the airline to devote the entire main deck to economy class.
Singapore also made some other tweaks that passengers likely will not notice.
“We managed to optimize the real estate usage on the plane by locating the galleys and all those monuments in the right place so the space could be more efficiently used,” Goh said.
The economy class seats, manufactured by Recaro, may be thinner than the ones they replace. But according to the airline, they’ll have more legroom and back support, as well as a six-way adjustable headrest. They’ll also have an 11.1-inch touch-screen monitor.
Singapore’s premium economy product is not expected to change.
