Breakfast rations were done for the morning, but Roman hadn't come down. Considering the shape he'd been when he'd come in, it was no wonder he was probably still up in his bed. Balancing a tray in her hands as she made her up to the nineth floor, and then on her knee with one hand as she opened the door, Charlie slowly made her way into the space, seeing him for the first time since he'd been brought in with the others. Thankfully alive. She'd already hounded Ruth about his condition, and thus made sure she stepped into his line of sight before bringing the tray over with a concerned little look but a small smile.

How was she supposed to tell him now? Maybe she'd wait until she knew for sure, until Ruth could confirm it? Between the uncertainty she'd been living in, and the shape he'd come in in, all her anger had been washed away, replaced instead with hurt and confusion. Two emotions much more easily pushed to the side for her concern for him. He looked so... small, somehow, like he'd retreated some into himself. But that came with pain. She'd seen it before after her brothers would get in particularly nasty fights.

Like a vice She'd held onto His wrist from the moment they'd gotten close enough for Her to latch on, switching Her grip from The Hero Lady to himself, but he hadn't seemed to mind. After the chaos of everything up to that point, the quiet of the quarantine suite was strange once The Small Lady had left them with an armful of blankets handed to him. Just Her and The Hero. With a door closed and locked. Four walls. Nothing to come from anywhere and jump out at them.

Finally releasing what was most likely a bruising grip from him, Her hands drew up close to Her chest, rubbing absently at the bandages around Her wrists where Ruth had cleaned up the friction burns from the broken handcuffs they'd removed. Creeping forward from the bedroom door toward to the closet, She leaned over to peer into the darkness, heart hammering as She waited for something or someone to come bursting out of the unknown space, and flinching away from it.

Nodding head as he listened, his father's heart ached for Lindsay, a hand lifting to being to pat at his shoulder, but thinking better of the unpermissioned touch, lowers his hand and gives a knowing nod instead. "You're feeling what we all felt at the beginning, though it seems you're coming into it all a little later. To be honest... at least she can communicate some of what she needs, infants just cry and you have to guess." Doing his best to lighten the mood, he gave a gentle wave away of the thanks.

"It's the least we could do, really. No one here is callous enough to take medicine from a sick child." Though some rumoured that Sada Vang might be, he chose to believe even she would choose to help a child.

"Well... I can't say all of this is the best welcome to our country, so the least I can do is offer a warm welcome to the building. If you need anything at all, I truly urge you not to hesitate to ask." Seeming to remember why he was fully there, Tobias gave a little start and a soft 'oh!' before reaching into the pocket and withdrawing a house key which he held out to the gentleman. "Suite 501, just waiting for you and Maisie to move in and call it home when she's well enough to move. I'm sure you've already met Charlie, but she works inventory and will definitely be able to help you find whatever you need. I as far as I'm aware there's even many toys and things that were collected from the vacated suites, Maisie would have her pick."

❝ mmh, ❞ lindsay hums his agreement to a suggestion well-received with a short nod as he continues to hold the door to the apartment open long enough for the older man to exit, following close behind him and taking care to shut the door quietly behind him as he steps into the hall. the longer he can allow maisie uninterrupted rest, the better. once the door is closed, lindsay turns to better face the man, giving him a swift and subtle once-over before his gaze settles on a friendly ( lindsay assumes in an attempt to appear disarming ) visage. ❝ i thank yae for that ― she needs the sleep. ❞

a quiet sigh escapes him at the question and his shoulders lift in a half-shrug. ❝ i cannae say, ❞ lindsay admits. ❝ the antibiotics seem to be helping― ❞ another fact for which he finds himself inexplicably indebted, ❝ ―but i'll be honest wi' ye, sir, i'm ... this is uncharted territory for me. ❞ he's new to guardianship, to parenthood ; only just truly beginning to learn to accommodate her grief. when it comes to her physical health, beyond the realm of immediate injury and first aid, the ex-scotsguard feels out of his depth. ( he's not drowning. he's not drowning. ) he nods at the introduction, files the information away. ❝ yer generosity is more than we ever could've anticipated, tobias. ❞

the question is simple enough, and given all that the older man has provided them, lindsay feels inclined to offer an honest answer. ❝ we are, aye ― i've been here just over a year now, come stateside last february. ❞ he doesn't mention what prompted the transplant of his entire life overseas. honesty does not need equate to total transparency. ❝ but maisie, bless her wee heart, born and raised right here. i'd argue the wean knows the city better'n i do, she does. ❞

Reading Morgoth’s Ring for the first time (currently at QS1 ch. 3) and thinking about how the choice of the Valar to encourage the Elves to come to Valinor is, in most of Tolkien’s writing, framed as if not objectively wrong and certainly well-intentioned, a dubiously good choice in hindsight.

And yet the choice of some kindreds of Elves to stay behind is, by implication if not explicitly in the text, a wrong one. Tolkien certainly never refers to the Avari as being wise and foresighted in their choice. This might be objectively true - at a minimum their mortality rate over the millennia must certainly have been very high - but. Idk. Its an interesting contrast. To me it at the very least places a portion of blame for subsequent events on the Valar (hardly a hot take, I know) who are the ones who should have known better. But was the idea that some elves knew better so unimaginable - or perhaps simply uninteresting - to Tolkien?

Ember, blood warm with alcohol and the argument with Ivy, had told Val that she'd be right back, and given into her impulse to see her oldest friend quarantine or not. Leaning a little on the wall of the elevator as she fixed up her hair in the mirrored walls, Ember couldn't help but be excited. Lane was more like her sibling than Maggie or Toby had ever been, and she'd realized that more than ever when all three hadn't come back and Ember had missed Lane most of all. Maybe even over her own mother.

It felt like forever before she'd finally found herself in front of the door, knocking incessantly and calling out her "Psst Lane"s up against it. The moment that she saw their face Ember had nearly thrown her arms around them, but stopped herself short at the reminder, unable to hold back her pout at not getting to hug them.

Lowering down so she was sitting against the hallway wall across from them, Ember's face was split entirely in two, eyes welling up with happy tears. "I can't believe you're here! Do you know how many times I've talked to you just... into the air. I knew you were out there somewhere, being all badass and stuff. You have come back from the dead for us, it's like a miracle, okay? Oh hush you, we don't throw away anything around here, and besides, now you can like have your own suite. I know Daddy will give you any one that you want, and it's my job now... to help you decorate it."

lane had known who was standing outside of the quarantine suite from the rhythmic knocking alone. the metallic jingling of bracelets only further confirmed the identity of who was waiting for them on the other side of the heavy door.

they wrung their hands together nervously as they contemplated opening the door or simply ignoring it—but when ember’s voice spoke their name lane’s heart tugged them towards a decision. she opened the door slowly and looked at the familiar face with a tired smile. “no hugs, miss wexley.” lane reminded her knowing that she was already breaking protocol by opening the door.

“i think we can get away with a few minutes of chatting though.” she didn’t want to send ember away. lane had been surprised at the comfort seeing her had brought. “maybe just step back a few feet your side and i’ll do the same, yeah?”

lane kept the door open and did as she suggested, stepping back until she felt the wall of the suites entryway against their back. lane slid to the floor and sat criss cross applesauce.

“kind of feels like coming back from the dead.” lane admitted, about being back after so long. after a minute their face contorted to mock upset and they cocked their head, “you better not have tossed my stuff or i’ll be right annoyed.”

"Well... By the time I'd be having the baby it'll be about Christmas time..."

And it would be. Nine months from March was December, and the idea of having a baby during her favorite time of year only seemed to add a sense of... fate, to the whole thing. Sure the world had ended, but the dead out there could only last as a danger so long, and then they'd have to start over... right? They'd need a second generation... and it felt right that it would start with the bringing together of two wrought families. To heal the wounds by being loving parents to the strongest child. A child prepared for the world they'd inherit.

It wasn't possible...

Torn from her musings by the heart break in that sentence, she didn't want to push, but filed the information away for when things were less volatile. For one of those quiet moments they shared each other with. This felt like one of them, or that it would seem like one from the outside, if you couldn't feel that underlining tension that hung over their heads even still... even now.

"I know. And... I hope you know that I'd never be able to truly stop loving you." Getting up to press her lips to his temple, Charlie dug into the pocket of her sweater and pulled out the two tests still in their wrapper, free hand giving a strong squeeze to his shoulder before she turned to head into the bathroom.

He'd begun shaking his heavy head in adamant disagreement the moment her lips formed the first few letters of his name. Hell. No.

There was a little relief when it became clear she was only joking and didn't seem keen on naming their child after him. He caught his breath and released the tension his shoulders had picked up. For some reason that was scarier to him than the thought of having a kid.

"June always wanted a little brother or sister.." It had been a pretty consistent complaint in her life and Roman understood why. Despite the adventures and warm memories June had formed on her grandparent's farm it was a lonely life for a child. Hannah's parents had assured him that June had plenty of friends from Hebrew school and the synagogue, but Roman had always worried she led a solitary life.

"Hannah may have had another.. if she ever got the chance." He eased into the admittance, trying to find a line between allowing Charlie into this intimate conversation while respecting Hannah's privacy. "But she knew it wasn't possible."

Which left him as the only option to fulfill June's innocent request. Roman had never sworn off having more children, he just never thought it would be in the cards for him.

Life had a funny way about things like that.

"Whatever it says.. it doesn't change how I feel about you." He hoped the same was true for her.
