Thankful to everyone at the reylo finish your fic anthology! You guys have been so supportive and kept me motivated to write and provided me with the battlefield to fight glorious word wars to earn my spot in Valhalla once I start posting on Sunday, December 1st!

And to my dear friend @a-nerd-obsessed , who I has been the biggest gift this fandom has given me. We've been working together for 1 1/2 years, and it has been a pure joy, you have taught me so much and helped me grow as a writer. Beta'ing for you has been one of the best things I've ever done! Honestly, your story has become my baby, I care about your characters and story as if it were my own. I couldn't be more honored to have you beta for me again. I love that you are a deep editor who's not afraid to rip my shitty chapters apart and rebuild them into something readable.

What got you into writing Fanfiction?

The Last Jedi got me into Reylo, then I ‘accidentally’ read a Reylo fanfic, The Dark Moon Rises series by AnyaVoss (no really, it was an accidental click on a link and before I’d finished the first chapter I was hooked and was like, well I guess this is my life now lol). I hadn’t read fanfic in years. Eventually I got hooked on diasterisms’ Sword of the Jedi series and I just couldn’t resist the itch to write anymore! I’ve also beta’d a lot which really helped my writing skills grow, and now I sort of feel like I’m ready to give back to this fandom that has meant so much to me. I’ve written novels and short stories before, but never fanfic, and honestly I find the research aspect for writing SW to be one of the most appealing things. I think the vastness of the world to play in was a huge aspect that drew me into wanting to write within the SW universe.

What are you most proud of in your Fanfiction?

The fact I’m writing again lol. Also my extensive research and blending of old and new canon, and the fact I came up with an ending for once!

What fic that you’ve written are you most proud of?

This one! I’ve started others that I will hopefully post on ao3 one day, but this story is my real baby that I’ve had in my head for two years, and is the story I’m most passionate about.

The Frozen Pond

Surprisingly there was one other person seated in the establishment, his thick winter coat resting on the back of his wooden chair that looked too small for him. Even sitting and wearing a navy blue knit sweater, Rey could tell he was extremely tall and solidly built, the outline of his shoulders and biceps straining against the loose material. He was raven haired, the silky strands waving gently to his shoulders and partially shielding his face as he bent over a crossword. The table he occupied was underneath a rather realistic silk wreath hanging from the ceiling, the false greenery interwoven with twinkling red and green lights.

Ordinarily Rey wouldn’t have the courage to talk to strangers, but hell, it was Christmas and the weight of loneliness was a physical pain crushing her chest.

Rey sat down across from the stranger. His brown eyes startled, confused, as he looked over into her hazel eyes. Suddenly Rey’s throat felt parched, and she couldn’t think of anything to say.

The awkward silence stretched through the sound of steam and percolating coffee.

Finally the stranger said in a deeply rich voice, “Can I help-?”

“Crosswords?” Rey managed to choke out, suddenly realizing just how gorgeous he was. “I like them too. Good way, good way to start a morning. With coffee.”

“Um, I suppose-”

“I’m Rey,” she shot out a hand, and he tentatively reached out his much larger hand to shake hers, completely engulfing her slim fingers with his large but surprisingly elegant ones. The sight made her mouth water.

“I’m Ben.”

So I wrote this in the @reylofanfictionanthology Christmas Secret Santa for the fabulous and talented @rewyo . Now I'm in need of a break from complicated, plot heavy, canon-verse, dark Rey multi-chapter whip Out to the Last Night and figured a one-shot Valentines Day would be a great opportunity. But I'm not sure what to write.

Should I write a follow up piece about these two cuties? Or something completely new?

"As you can see," Luke jabs his thumb backwards over his shoulder "we have a guest, today." "And by today," Leia cuts in, the warm, gravelly quality of her voice confident and steady in a tone that brooks no argument, "Luke means the entirety of this upcoming performance."

   Rey was sure she had the ins and outs of dancing for a world renowned ballet company figured out, but when Kylo Ren, former principal dancer for a rival company shows up and turns everything upside down, only one thing is certain; men in tights should never look this good.

Tros dialogue isn't 'prequels' bad, it's worse. Because at least the prequels used subtext, (yes even in the infamous 'sand' scene) and they are movies with intricate plots making meaningful social and psychological commentary. Sure the dialogue isn't great, but it was actually trying to say something!

There was actually a lot going on in the sand scene. We learn about Padme's childhood and some of her personal values when she reminisces about swimming with her friends in the lake, then sticking her feet in the warm soft sand and laying down on the beach to dry off. The subtext is that she values nature, peace, and innocence and had a rather privileged childhood. It's nice and tidy writing, we learn all that in a few sentences. To her, sand by the lake represents all these values.

Anakin had a much less privileged childhood, and this scene is here to remind us of how different these two characters are, she rich and priveleged, he a slave turned Jedi. To Anakin sand reminds him of it being a nuisance, being uncomfortable, rough and course, not soft like Padme describes it. Padme had a soft childhood, Anakin had a rough and course childhood. To Anakin sand reminds him of slavery. But the dialogue does not say any of this literally! We are left to infer this. And yes, it's creepy when Anakin touches her saying 'everything here is soft and smooth', but what the dialogue is attempting to do is show that despite Anakin's upbringing, he is not that slave anymore, he's on Naboo and a padawan and has had enough life experience to see things, even sand, differently. He is not physically or psychologically in the same place as he was in the last movie. But this is all subtext.

Terrio/JJ would probably write something like:

'Sand reminds me of having fun by the lake as a child'

'Sand reminds me of being a slave'

and then we'd all think it was good dialogue because Adam and Daisy would look intensely into each others eyes with crackling sexual tension and emote their hearts out and the scene would actually be good because the actors saved it.

Like the scene with Finn and Jannah? There could have been so much emotional subtext there. But nope. Its all surface level dialogue, telling us in chronological order about the characters physical actions: laying down their blasters and refusing to shoot because they had a 'feeling'. Hint, when writing about something as abstract as feelings, its best to use metaphors and analogies. Don't just say it was a 'feeling', whatever tf that means 🤦‍♀️ I'd never write like this in my fanfics, and if I did my beta's would make me rewrite it lol. (Shoutout to @a-nerd-obsessed and @qotsisajakk for being the best betas ever).

There actually is some effort made by George Lucas for subtext in his dialogue, as cringe inducing as it is. Someone give me an example from tros that made this kind of effort. There might be one idk, I only saw the film twice before I was like 'I never want to see this garbage ever again'. I mean even 'I did want to take your hand. Ben's hand' is still fairly literal. And don't get me started on how awful grandpalpy's dialogue was. He's one of the best most conniving and intelligent evil villains of all time and he's reduced to... I'm not gonna start

Welcome to the 2020 Reylo Fanfiction Anthology: To Rapture the Earth and the Seas

Dear writers,

We’re so excited to have all of you as part of this year’s Anthology, To Rapture the Earth and the Seas!  Please note that while we post on various social media platforms with updates, we use email for all communication and our emails will have information not found in our social posting. If you didn’t receive an email from us, please let us know!

The next step for the project is submitting outlines. For the outlines, we look for everyone to have a clear idea of where their piece will go and for a clear link to the natural element for which you signed up. Each fic’s focus should be the relationship between Rey and Kylo/Ben, and it must be something that can be completed in the given time and word limits. Information about how to submit will be in your email inboxes, and please submit your outlines by April 7th through Google Docs. We’ll reply to you to let you know we’ve read your outline as soon as we can!

Chapter 7: Kýrios - (Greek) Master

Kylo Ren grunted, brow wrinkling and frown deepening. Rey froze, but his breathing resumed its even rhythm. She shot out both hands, thumbs pressing on his arteries, fingers digging in savagely to his bare skin where she could feel the slight stubble of his beard.

The shadow of his eyes flashed open, glinting like a snake’s as he reared up and ripped himself free of her grasp. He flung her back with the Force, sending her sliding on her back across the floor, knocking the wind from her lungs. Then his large body moved more lithely than it seemed capable of as he leapt off the bed and launched himself on her prone form, straddling her and squeezing her torso with his thighs.

Her ribs protested their entrapment. He wrapped his hand around her throat, almost able to touch his fingers together behind her skull. He began to apply light pressure to the sides of her neck, making her vision blur at the edges.

This was definitely it. She’d pushed her luck one too many times. At least she had gone out fighting. By R’iia, this was a death she could be proud of.

"You know I’m really not a morning person,” he said softly above her, then lowered his head until they were nose to nose, eyes burning through the darkness into each other’s.

“But, you do so much for me," Rey said.

“No I don’t,” Ben hunched down in his seat as another couple walked passed them.

 Shaking her head vehemently Rey countered, “Not true. I like, how you always text me good night, and just hold my hand when we walk and feed the ducks, or cuddle me on my horrendous green couch, even when you complain it looks like the 70’s died and I made it’s rotting carcass into a piece of furniture that you’ll probably catch a disease from."

“Really? That’s all-” he looked at her, shocked.

“Yes! You really didn’t think that was enough?” she drew her eyebrows together and looked at him bewildered, a slight exasperated wrinkle on her forehead.

Shrugging and feeling his ears warm, Ben replied, “Well, I mean that’s just what you do, you know?”

Ben has had bad experiences with Valentines Day in the past, and even though everything has been going great since meeting Rey on Christmas, he can't seem to shake off the intrusive thoughts that started a week before V day. Rey is going to fix that though with a dash of scheming, food, some animal therapy, and a little help from Maz.

I've decided to do a Holiday series (called Grumpy Reylo Holidays) filled with these two 'celebrating' each holiday to varying success (short and sweet, one and two shots). This is a follow up to my Christmas fic I wrote for @rewyo , The Frozen Pond. I'm not sure yet, but I may do a Saint Patrick's Day one, but I'm definitely doing a Passover one! Rey is going to meet Ben's family for the first time in the best possible circumstances; starving, late at night, and under the influence of a bunch of wine! Those of you who celebrate Passover know what I'm talking about lol. And if you, like Rey, do not know what you are in for, then I hope it will not only be amusing, touching, but also educational.

There, she saw the nightmare that haunted even her waking thoughts; tall and broad, swathed in flowing black.

Kylo Ren was gazing at her, perfectly motionless - impossibly so - like the shadow of a statue of some horrible god of death.
