That's how it started, you rambling about everything from the very very start, until today, your friend occasionally commented, or asked you questions, as a way to tell you they were still listening. But of course not everything could go right, could it ?

Which tropes do you find overused/boring?

Let's be real with one another. All tropes are overused because that is the nature of the beast. That doesn't mean they are bad. Not at all. Somethings are classic for a reason. Most boring: Modern AUs, All relationships end in marriage or children. You'll never find me having much interest in either.

What RP trends are you so over and can’t wait for it to die?

Probably my most unpopular take. The lack of capitalization in formatting a post or the double spaces between each word to get that 'justified' text look. I literally can not read either. The words cease to be words at that point. I can't concentrate on what the writer is trying to say, so I just don't. From an accessible web QA tester it's.. ugh. I get why people want to do it. Nothing against them. You do you, but I do wish more consideration was made towards an accessibility aspect of writing.

Is there something you really would want to write? What about not wanting to write something?

Probably more on the ships I do like with him at some point or another, but I don't rush into those things. I would like more interactions between canon party members because the lack of inter-camp banter is a huge critique I have of the game. In general? More plotted threads. Decided to try something different with a schedule I make for my friends in a discord server I'm in.

Going forward, I'll be posting my Toonami Schedules on my blog as well, and my DD ScheDDules too. That's just a little silly schedule I make.

Oh, the "meDDia" section is something I usually do when there's a rerun. In our server, I kinda have free reign over this part, so usually I'll look up a funny video that kinda fits the theming. This go around, since I'm feeling the love for DBZ again, I thought it'd be fun to try some fresh DB content we haven't gotten on the actual Toonami block. I decided to post ep 1 and 2 here since this is my first blog post of the schedule.

The graphic is definitely new for me. I found a font matching the Toonami font online, found the old Toonami emblem/logo, and from there I googled space pictures and did renders and edits in paint.net to get the result you see above. Thinking about changing the colors and doing a little more editing, but not too bad for my first attempt at one of these, right?

"Tf is the DD Schedule?"

Well, I am DD. The DD Schedule kinda started just as a little joke a year or two ago, again, I just kinda joke and shoot the shit. Some of my friends get upset with me if I forget or don't do the silly schedule, so I reckon if it makes them happy, I do it.

Sometimes it's good for recap. Sometimes not. Depends on the mood. It's just harmless fun and I like being silly.

"Why the inaccurate Japanese?"

Since Ninja Kamui is subbed, I basically just run my original Ninja Kamui bit through Deepl since I was told it is slightly more accurate than Google translate. No harm was meant if it comes off wrong. In other words, Sub is basically the same as Dub but slight differences.

"What are the numbers and projected end dates?"

Something different I decided to do with this schedule is to keep count of episodes and a possible end date for the season or series on Toonami. The Projected End Dates- PED- is subject to change for marathons that may happen. In fact, I'm pretty sure we're due for a Ninja Kamui marathon or 2 for when the series ends its current run, as they tend to do other originals.

"Why the graphics?"

Dunno, thought it'd be fun to try something different for a change. The schedule I post in our server is usually just text, so I figure this would spice things up.

Because I live in Central, some if my friends don't. Just assume the schedule starts as normal unless stated otherwise. For me that's 11:00pm central.

Ask Responses: Tough Questions #1

What is your opinion on today’s ideal of the long thin dancers that Balanchine liked/preferred and Russia’s immense popularisation of it (later becoming the new standard of the desired ballet body)? And why do you think Skorik, compared to other Russian dancers, get so much more attention regarding her body and how unhealthy she looks from the Western media?

I’ve received some tough questions recently (six of the, to be exact). I find these particular questions challenging for a number of reasons: some subject matters are potentially controversial; my personal opinion on certain subjects is not especially nice and I’m cautious when it comes to sharing it; or I simply don’t have enough information to give a good answer. Either way, I will do my best to answer these questions honestly. 

I always get uncomfortable when the subject of the “ballet body” comes up. Over the past five years I’ve seen female dancers bullied online for the way they look. Either these women are too thin or too fat – there is no in-between – and people are always eager to let them know how they feel about their bodies. Often, these comments are presented in a form of “concern” for the dancers’ health, and I find this unbelievably patronising! People never stop to think about the effect their words can have on someone. I know that some dancers had to temporarily leave social media because these comments became too much to handle.

First thing’s first: we’re talking about female bodies, and we need to acknowledge that there is a lot of historical and societal context attached to this subject.

When it comes to aesthetics in ballet, I’ve learned that every country is different. Come to think of it, beauty standards – especially for women – also differ from culture to culture, and tend to change over generations. Back in the 19th and early 20th century, thinness was associated with illness (consumption), and you saw this beauty standard reflected in ballerinas of the time. Of course, since then ballet itself has changed drastically, and the evolving technique has affected the bodies as much as the evolving beauty standards have. I think what we’re seeing now is a resurgence of the old views, and thinness is once again equated with poor health. This is particularly prevalent in the West. The problem I have with this is that instead of questioning the system (and I’m not just talking about ballet here), people focus on specific women and their bodies, because, historically, society has always felt a lot of ownership over female bodies.

We all have different genetic make-up, and if we try to fit a template our bodies were never meant for, we can severely damage our physical and mental health. In the documentary “Beautiful Tragedy”, Oksana Skorik talks about being compared to (and comparing herself to) a classmate who was skinnier than her, and becoming anorexic as a result of trying to copy her. Trying to achieve uniformity without taking individuality into consideration can lead to disaster. This is something Joy Womack has talked about as well. During her time at BBA, she was pitted agains another student by her teacher to see who could lose more weight... By the way, I think that “Beautiful Tragedy” is partly the reason Skorik gets singled out in the West over other Russian dancers. She’d already gone on record talking about her body and her health.

I realise that this answer is turning into a bloody essay, so let me try and summarise my feelings in dot points: 

Having a “standard” is fine, but dancers must be carefully guided to achieving and maintaining this standard, and their genetic makeup, body type and individuality must be taken into account.

Achieving complete uniformity is, ultimately, impossible. Instead, we should learn how each dancer can reach their fullest potential and get the most out of their body without compromising their health. Individual approach is key.

From the moment they start training, ballet students must be given tools to properly manage their health, weight and body image. 

Different cultures have different “standards”. Instead of criticising each other for the way we look, we must investigate why those standards are there in the first place and question if these standards are healthy.

For the people in the back: You do not have the right to anyone’s body. Whether you’re a member of the media or a “concerned” member of the public – keep your opinions to yourself.

No, there wouldn't be clear sources because the contributors chose to remain anonymous. Sources can choose to remain anonymous for a lot of reasons, but I think the obvious reason here is that these people want to work again. They want to stay in the industry, and they're worried that if their names are attached, they'll be blacklisted. Now, whether you believe the sources or not, whether you think Kotaku made it up, that's an argument I won't partake in. I choose to believe the sources - I've had to make the tough call of going to print with an anonymous source, or scrapping an entire story because your source won't say anything with their name attached. Journalists don't make it lightly, seeing as you can absolutely be sued if you put something like this out there and the target you took aim at is displeased. I did some digging into reporter Sisi Jiang too, and they don't seem to have a history of putting out unreliable information, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Nate Purkeypile worked in the art department, correct? I read his interview in NYU's Washington Square News where he mentions playtesting, but it seems like he was focused more on the artistic side of Fallout 76. Kudos to Nate, the game's pretty. QA works with the art department somewhat, but it's a different beast. Also, see my previous point about wanting to remain in the industry after leaving the studio.

I fail to see how a very bad personal joke tweet by a completely different reporter automatically condemns this entire report, and for that matter, the entirety of Kotaku. Again, I'm not a Kotaku fan, I'm not defending their questionable journalistic integrity or their shitty staff, but that's a big leap. Also, Twitter is just... fucking terrible with the whole "guilt-by-association" thing. Even if Jason Schreier had a hand in getting this story off the ground, it was Jiang's story at the end of the day, and theirs and their editor's call to publish it.

Alright, coming at this from the angle of being a fan of Fallout 76, and of the studio's other creations, despite... everything. Fallout 76 had a colossally bad launch, in a series of failings in nearly every department, on every level of management, and on nearly every aspect of the game itself. You're right, we've re-hashed that a lot, here on Tumblr and everywhere else. I am just as tired of seeing the takes about broken games and bugs and tote bags as you, anon. I play the game regularly, I complete the SCOREBOARDs religiously, I've met several lifelong friends on its servers and I will buy Starfield and probably The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 when they eventually come out. Hell, I'd even welcome a new Obsidian project partnership, although I think Fallout New Vegas 2 is a mythical creature. But this does not smell like "incorrect journalism" to me. There are a lot of points in this report that make problems we already knew about the game make a lot more sense, like the decision to use the Creation Engine despite it not being ready for anything beyond single-player games, or the sporadic visits from Todd Howard that tore up the design team's ideas. There is also more detail on the horrendous crunch that the studio forced its QA teams into, something that is meticulously documented across the AAA gaming industry in studios with far better and far worse reputations than Zenimax - detail I am inclined to believe, given what we know about game development as a whole. Above everything else, this article is aiming its criticisms at management, and that is the right place to aim them. The innocent people I assume you are worried about are the devs, the people hard at work on Fallout 76 and Starfield and beyond, and yes, I understand that you're worried that they'll be abused, docked pay or even fired. But the people doing the abusing, the withdrawal of funding, the firing and studio closures, they are the ones at fault here. They are the ones brought to task in Jiang's story. And if they don't want bad press, or devs quitting because they're developing symptoms of PTSD, there is a very simple fix - treating their people better.

Assuming that everything Kotaku published in this story is true, it is not the journalist's fault that Bethesda and Zenimax mishandled their own team and their own game. There is no one to blame here but management. Time and time again, I see people blame journalists and news outlets for publishing a damaging story right before something big happens for their target, and I'm so tired of listening to discourse about whether "this was an inopportune moment" or "this was the exact right time to release this." It just depends on what perspective you're coming in with. Personally, I don't think Bethesda's showcase will suffer because of this article's release - if anything, they might get more eyeballs on it, since people love a good controversy. As far as increased scrutiny goes, I welcome it. I want Bethesda and Zenimax and the entire AAA game studio circus to improve. If they're scrambling last-minute to change their image and slap something showcase-worthy together, then they are doing something wrong. If they aren't listening to their game devs and QA team and are steamrolling any suggestions to delay or undergo big fixes, they are doing something wrong. If they aren't getting ahead of their own failures by preventing them from happening in the first place, they are doing something wrong.

Ugh, I'm old. I had to look up the term "ratio" just to make sure I was understanding you right, anon. I am reading this as you accusing Kotaku of attempting to remain relevant and better-liked in the eyes of the masses, compared to the brow-beaten Bethesda. Bethesda isn't powerless. Kotaku isn't an underdog. The two do certainly have a history of back-and-forth, and Bethesda has told its staff not to talk to Kotaku at all since, what, 2015? If anything, that just strengthens my earlier point about the anonymous staff members being scared of punishment - it might even be in their contracts/NDAs not to speak to Kotaku, or to any reporters, ever. To your statements, Kotaku could also be desperate to get something, anything, they can use against the studio, and are thus willing to move forward with a story that contains solely-anonymous sources and a scathing indictment of toxic workplace culture that they did not personally witness. There are a ton of personal biases, grudges, possibly even vendettas in play here, and you are right to be skeptical of Kotaku's intentions. You are right to question your news sources, do not lose that impulse.

But when the day ends, the pageantry of the continued Kotaku vs. Bethesda feud boils down to the fact that Kotaku made some decisions to run stories that Bethesda disapproved of, and Bethesda has a history of making bad choices with their IPs, their launches, and their people. One of those is far more harmful, far more reprehensible, and far more preventable than the other. Also, sadly, super common in the AAA gaming industry.

If it comes out in the next few weeks that Jiang made the whole thing up, that the anonymous sources are fake or lying or whatever, I will retract this entire post and admit I was wrong. I'm human, I have biases too, and as a former journalist, I've had to admit my own mistakes before. It sucks, it hurts my ego, but it's good for me. Still, it's much more likely that the article is correct, people will laud it for a few days, and everyone will forget about the Kotaku article come Sunday when Todd Howard wears another leather jacket and shows some bomb game footage of Starfield that gets their fans excited all over again. Nothing will change, and the innocent people will go on at the mercy of management that cares about them only as much as they affect the bottom line.

MID-YEAR PROJECT UPDATE! (It’s a long one) YEAH. MID. YEAR. We are halfway through 2020! Just let that sink in for a minute… Don’t know about you, but I feel like time has just been rapidly slipping away. I haven’t been posting a lot of art this year so far but I’ve been busy working on it so I though it was a good time for a project update! First up, the Addicted Animal Series: This year began with the release of the 3rd book in the series “If You Give A Kitty A Cocktail”. The book has been well received so far but it’s release was pretty blunted by Covid. Despite that we are looking forward to Kitty’s convention debut when things get started up again so we can really get the word out! (Tell your friends) In the meantime I’ve been working on the 4th book “If You Give a Dog a Doobie”. I’m about halfway done now and I can tell you it’s going to be one of the best of the 4. Our publisher really wanted us to do another pot related book and I’ll admit I wasn’t super hot about the idea at first because we already did Bear, but Sam Miserendino really made the story shine and took it in a fresh and really funny direction. Dog will be done before the end of the year and I can’t wait to share it with all of you! Next up- Clash Cup Turbo: I get the most questions about this one and don’t worry it’s not going anywhere and it’s more alive than ever. We called the game “done” several months ago and earmarked some features we were working on for future updates so not to delay the release any further. With that I wish I could say next we just have to click the “RELEASE” button but that’s definitely not that easy haha When we set out on this project our primary goal was to release it for consoles in addition to Steam and other desktop services like Itch.io. We knew shooting for a console release was going to be tough especially working on it part time, but it’s taken a significant amount work just to get connected with the proper channels and get setup. I’m happy to say though in the last couple months we finally got on the right track. We are scheduled to submit our first build of the game to Sony’s QA this month. Everything else is in place, so if all goes well and we can stay on top of bug fixes, we are looking at an end of year digital launch on PS4! Unfortunately when it comes to bug fixing I’m pretty useless so send your good vibes to Momin Khan and his genius dev brain to push this thing over the finish line! Comic Strip: I’ve been noodling around an idea for a strip since January, and I’m really excited about it but the question is “How the heck am I going to have time for this?” The answer is I don’t know, but I have a serious itch I need to scratch and that’s getting back to my #1 passion- making comics. I have ideas for the first 10 or so strips fleshed out and I think doing these when I can will be a nice, bite sized way to get me back into to comic and storytelling mode. As I get to these, I will be posting them for sure. Which leads me to my next thing- Graphic Novel: “Why did I decide I want to do this with everything else happening in my life? Isn’t this virtually unachievable with a day job, family, and other projects?” I ask myself that A LOT but this obviously a very long term project and rolls into that whole “I still want to make comics!” thing. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and maybe it’s just a pipe dream, but I kicked it off this year by writing the first chapter and have almost finished thumbnails for it. Sounds like a lot but really it’s about 14 pages. I’m not stressing over it, just letting it form organically.
