Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Vol. 4 Announced
Tumblr media
I had written a post, which you can find here, where I talked about Looney Tunes that were never released officially in any medium. Did any of those make the new collection? Mostly no, as expected, but yes, one or two did! Let's look at the contents, in the order listed in the press release.
Along Came Daffy (1947, Freleng, Blue Ribbon). A semi-remake of Daffy's Southern Exposure from 1942 and Wackiki Wabbit from 1943, this has two starving men (who look a lot like Yosemite Sam, one red and one black) trying to eat Daffy, who has come to sell them cookbooks. Classic 40s Daffy.
A Bone for a Bone (1951, Freleng). This is one of the ones never released on home video before now! (It has streamed.) The Goofy Gophers vs. a dog, and while enjoyable, it's not the lights out classic the previous two Gopher cartoons were.
The Cagey Canary (1942, Avery/Clampett, Blue Ribbon). Tex Avery started this cartoon, then left Schlesinger's, so Bob Clampett finished it. It's very reminiscent of later Tweety and Sylvester cartoons.
D'Fightin' Ones (1961, Freleng). A psrody of the movie the Defiant Ones, starring Sylvester and a bulldog.
Dangerous Dan McFoo (1939, Avery, Blue Ribbon). A parody of the poem The Shooting of Dan McGrew. Avery would return to this poem several times over his career. This is the first cartoon to feature the voice of Arthur Q. Bryan (future Elmer Fudd) and Robert C. Bruce (the narrator voice for almost every WB cartoons from this point on).
Devil's Feud Cake (1963, Freleng). A "cheater" cartoon, using footage from previous cartoons. Yosemite Sam dies and goes to hell, and is told to bring Bugs back there to avoid eternal damnation. Not great, but they're running out of Bugs cartoons.
Double Chaser (1942, Freleng, Blue Ribbon). A "chase" cartoon to the extreme, with a mouse, cat and dog.
Double or Mutton (1955, Jones). A Sam Sheepdog/Ralph Wolf cartoon, with lots of cartoon violence against Ralph that was censored on TV being uncut here.
Fox Pop (1942, Jones, Blue Ribbon). A fox hears that silver foxes are highly prized, and paints himself silver, only to realize they only want the skin. Jones is starting to slowly become funny in 1942, this is a good example of him getting better. Also, a public domain cartoon, so has appeared on many bootleg WB collections. This is restored.
Henhouse Henery (1949, McKimson). An early Foghorn Leghorn cartoon, and the first to use "Camptown Races".
Holiday for Drumsticks (1949, Davis). Daffy Duck tries to "save" a turkey from Thanksgiving by eating all his food for him. A classic, one of three cartoons newly restored for HD for this set.
Hopalong Casualty (1960, Jones). A late-period Coyote/Roadrunner cartoon. The one with the earthquake pills.
Hyde and Go Tweet (1960, Freleng). Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde with Tweety and Sylvester.
The Impatient Patient (1942, McCabe, B&W). Released in its original black and white for the first time officially on home media, this has a loopy Daffy trying to deliver a message to "Chloe" in a parody of horror movies.
Leghorn Swoggled (1951, McKimson). The other Foghorn Leghorn/Henery Hawk title on here.
Meatless Flyday (1944, Freleng). A spider tries desperately to catch a fly. Finally foiled by wartime rationing.
Mouse-Warming (1952, Jones). Claude Cat versus a boy and girl mouse rather than Hubie & Bertie. This was on the Mouse Chronicles Blu-Ray, but unrestored.
The Mouse-Merized Cat (1946, McKimson, Blue Ribbon). The final Babbitt and Catstello cartoon, where Babbitt tries to get Catstello (a mouse - don't worry too much about it) to go after the cat by hypnosis. Catstello imitating Rochester has been cut from TV airings, will be uncut here.
Muscle Tussle (1953, McKimson). Daffy must try to defeat a muscle-bound blond at the beach in order to keep his flighty girlfriend. A parody of the "90-pound weakling" ads.
Muzzle Tough (1954, Freleng). The second Tweety and Sylvester cartoon on here, and another new restoration (maybe - does Japanese release only count?). Sylvester tries to get past Hector the Bulldog to get at Tweety.
Peck Up Your troubles (1945, Freleng, Blue Ribbon). Sylvester's second cartoon, and basically a Tweety cartoon only with a woodpecker. A new restoration, and thank God, as the old print looked awful.
Quack Shot (1954, McKimson). Daffy tries to stop Elmer Fudd shooting ducks. For the most part, his attempts rebound on him, but Daffy has the last laugh. Possibly the last Daffy Duck cartoon where he's "old-school" loopy Daffy all the way through. New to home media!
Road to Andalay (1964, Freleng). A post-64 (but only just) Sylvester and Speedy Gonzalez cartoon, but still directed by the master. New to home media!
The Sneezing Weasel (1938, Avery, Blue Ribbon). A standard 30s Merrie Melodie, but Avery's constantly chuckling weasel (voiced by Avery himself) is what everyone remembers.
Streamlined Greta Green (1937, Freleng). One of WB's classic plots, where a child is bad, is shown how bad his actions are, supposedly learns his lesson, but in reality doesn't learn a thing. This time the child is a car.
There are also two bonus cartoons, Lighter Than Hare (1960, Freleng) and Stork Named (1955, Freleng). Both came out years ago on collections that released the shorts as "widescreen". The fans were unhappy. They did not want a previously unseen version that cut the top and bottom of the cartoon, they wanted THEIR version. So these are in regular size (but restored).
It's a strong, if safe, collection. A lot of cartoons people have been begging for, including me. No blackface gags to worry parents, and only one Speedy Gonzalez cartoon to worry censors. I can't wait. No Porky Pig, though. :(

Dear @ato-the-bean, tHaNk YoU for your recommendations (beforehand), considerable mentoring (in the park) + downright hand holding through my non-MI6 issued phone (during the drive out). Without your extraordinarily calm Q-level-assistance I shudder thinking how the Yosemite leg of this adventure would have unfolded, especially the leaving part. Thx to your top notch research skills, I got out of the park before it closed for days to sleep soundly (!) in a beautiful room (!) with a belly full of delicious food + wine. A week later, my family + I are still singing your praises(!). 💜

HAPPY LATE 83rd BIRTHDAY TO ELMER FUDD!!! (2 MARCH 1940)
Elmer Fudd shares his birthday with Porky Pig (something which I admit I didn't know until reciently). Until now, I have encountered many posts that wish happy birthday to Porky, as well as even showing a brief history of the character (which I'm glad to see!), but none for the poor nimrod. Therefore I decided I'll do it, albiet lately. Here's a short history of Elmer Fudd and how he evolved to be the character that we all know and love:
Although Elmer's official appearance is considered to be in Elmer's Candid Camera (2 March 1940), his origins date much further that that.
Many people think that it all started with Egghead, a dim-witted human-like cartoon character, with a bulbous nose and an egg-shaped head, who later evolved into Elmer Fudd but that aspect is somehow debated by cartoon historians.
The true very early version of Elmer Fudd appeared in Little Red Walking Hood (1937). Here, he had a derby hat, small squinty eyes, big reddish noise, a high collar around his neck, a green long sleeve shirt, green pants, and a bald circle-like human head.
After that, he appeared in more shorts throughout the late 30s. In the 1939 cartoon, Dangerous Dan Mac Foo, a new actor, Arthur Q. Brian, voiced Elmer and gave him his well-known speech impediment.
His official first appearance was in Elmer's Candid Camera (2 March 1940), alongside an early version of Bugs Bunny.
In his early cartoons Elmer alternates between being a hunter, like in A Wild Hare (1940), or a mild-mannered fellow who "wikes wabbits" and wants to adopt or take pictures of them, before Bugs drives him insane (Elmyra Duff, his counterpart in Tiny Toon Adventures, might be inspired by this version of him).
For a short period of time, between 1941-42, Elmer Fudd was given a new design, making him a heavy-set, beer-bellied character, patterned after Arthur Q. Bryan's real-life appearance, and still chasing Bugs (or vice versa). The audiences didn't like him however, so the slimmer version of the toon returned for good.
In the 50s, three gems of cartoons came out today known as the Hunting Trilogy: Rabbit Fire (1951), Rabbit Seasoning (1952), Duck! Rabbit, Duck! (1953). These cartoons solidified Elmer's reputation as a hunter and his dynamic with Bugs and Daffy
Elmer's official role became the one of a hunter and foil for Bugs Bunny. Even today Elmer Fudd is considered to be Bugs' classic nemesis, despite the fact that the wabbit has had many more enemys throught history (such as Yosemite Sam, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, Marvin the Martian or Taz). Traits of his character solidified such as his gulibillity, short attention span, short temper and mild manners. The duo is such a classic that in the late 1950s cartoon, Bugs' Bonnets, in which the two of them try on different hats. This leads to a mayhem that ends with matrimony.
The only time Elmer won against Bugs was in Hare Bush (1956), where they swich roles
Elmer also played other roles such as Cupid in The Stupid Cupid (1944), which also starred Daffy Duck
He appeared in the 1990s series, Tiny Toon Adventures as Elmyra's mentor and a teacher at Acme Looniversity
He didn't play a huge role in either Baby Looney Tunes (2002) or The Looney Tunes Show (2011), but he did appear in a lot of episodes in Looney Tunes Cartoons (2020) as one of Bugs' main antagonists. This time however, he doesn't have his usual shotgun, due to the increase in gun violence in America.
So... as I was saying, HAPPY 83rd BIRTHDAY ELMER FUDD!!!!<33

Arthur Q. Bryan: The Man Who Would Be Fudd
We’ve tipped our hand in the title to this post. Most who know the name Arthur Q. Bryan (1899-1959) know him as the man who inconveniently breaks Mel Blanc’s reputation for “doing all the characters” in the classic Warner Brothers cartoons. For while Mel did Bugs, Daffy, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam and so forth, while Bryan owned Elmer Fudd. Who can say why the Fudd voice is so…

« She posted her pictures on November 3rd and on November 3rd JL was in Yosemite.🤭 »
Didn't believe the publication dates on IG. Sometimes it's several days before, especially for DK.
So if JL was in YOSEMITE on November 3, it's possible that she posted her photos on November 3 but was with him 😉. She was photographed there, don't forget.
But the original Q was that JL and DK might have been in LA for Halloween, and no it doesn't seem like he was. 🤷🏼‍♀️

A great interview with a host who has been supporting my novels from the very beginning.
Full interview link! https://ginaraemitchell.com/reflections-of-michael-trilogy/
Gina Rae Mitchell
Author Q&A Preview: Among all the characters you have created, do you have a favorite? If so, why does that character hold a special place for you?
Lily and Louie. Their relationship was pure and honest, their bond was caring. Lily quietly supported him on his opinions on corruption and his quest to be a partisan. He is an idealist who search for social and political justice. Not to hurt the feelings of Ron or Michael they are a favorite in a unique way –so much of Michael is me.
Ron is the anchor of the four; his journey is vastly different. Ron comes from a lower class than the other three characters. He is willing to fight to protect Rhonda and Michael; he carries the adventure through America with his innocence. His vision of God in the forest of Yosemite moves Ron to a spiritual enlightenment. Ron discovers Michael is gay. He is wounded and he feels cheated and used, that he was lied to. Ron leaves the house for good, but they had a promise that on Christmas they will meet on the Boulevard St Michel.
After that, Ron then has completed his rite of passage, the trial of fire and water. This gives him emotional strength to take Michael on his last journey—understanding his love, which is beyond sensual, is true and unconditional love. Ron sees the reflection of Michael actually being his own reflection, but for that one last moment in Paris, he is at one with Michael. He can go onward.
These characters are all in my heart every day. I think of them, wondering what they are doing. When I phase out, I will come back to reality, and I cry for them and how hard their journey was, but they completed their journeys with honesty. That is why after these days answering questions I decided I will write a fourth book and end the story.

How to be an astronaut
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/how-to-be-an-astronaut/
How to be an astronaut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first question a student asked Warren “Woody” Hoburg ’08 during his visit to MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AeroAstro) this November was: “It seems like there’s no real way to know if being an astronaut is something you could really do. Are there any activities we can try out and see if astronaut-related things are something we might want to do?”
Hoburg’s response: There is no one path to space.
“If you look at all the classes of astronauts, there are all sorts of life paths that lead people to the astronaut corps. Do the things that are fun and exciting — work on things you’re excited to do just because it’s fulfilling in and of itself, not because of where it might lead,” he told a room full of Course 16 students.
Hoburg was the only faculty member among his peers in NASA’s Astronaut Class 22, for example. His own CV includes outdoor sports, computer science and robotics, EMT and search and rescue service, design optimization research, and flying airplanes.
In a two-day visit to the department that included a keynote lecture as well as fireside chats and Q&As with undergraduates and grad students, Hoburg shared his personal journey to becoming an astronaut, lessons and observations from his time aboard the International Space Station, and his excitement for what’s next in space exploration.
Woody Hoburg: From MIT to ISS Video: Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics
From MIT to ISS
For Hoburg, the path that led him first to MIT and eventually to the International Space Station wasn’t straightforward, or focused on a specific goal. From his aerospace studies at MIT, he was torn between going to grad school or getting a job in industry. He decided to pursue computer science in grad school, and from there wasn’t sure if he should stay in academia, join a startup, or join the U.S. Air Force. It was late in grad school when his research started going well that he decided to stick with it, and that decision brought him back to MIT in 2014 as an assistant professor leading a research group in AeroAstro.
He had more or less forgotten his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut. “Not in a bad way,” he clarifies, “just there were other things consuming my time and interest.” But then, a friend suggested they submit applications for the NASA Astronaut Candidate Program. “I remembered that when I was a kid I did think that would just be the coolest job, so I applied. I never thought I’d actually get accepted.”
Performing in an operational environment
Hoburg credits his time at MIT with nurturing a love of adventure and pursuing new ideas and passions. “Everyone here was awesome academically, that was a given. But it seemed like everyone also had a wild unique interest, and I loved that about this community.” As an undergraduate Hoburg remembers rushing through his P-sets so he could go off rock-climbing and skiing for the weekend.
The MIT Alpine Ski team was his first experience on a tight-knit, mission focused team, which has become a core part of his personal and professional ethos. Before starting grad school at the University of California at Berkeley he took a year off to be an EMT, and he spent his summers in California on the Yosemite Search and Rescue team.
“That was my first experience doing what I would call real operational stuff, getting called out on a mission to help someone, working with a high-performing team in an austere environment,” he said. “A lot of the civilians who get selected at NASA have something operational in their background, in addition to their technical expertise. I think search and rescue ultimately helped me with my astronaut application, but I don’t know of anyone who had gone that route before me. It did help me grow into a strong operator — but at the time I just wanted to be out in the mountains responding to emergencies.”
This theme of operational capacity emerged throughout Hoburg’s talks and Q&As. He noted that astronaut candidates tend to be natural team players, and the two-plus years of training prepare them to approach every situation with trust and confidence. A comfort level with versatility is critical for an astronaut: they have to fly and dock the spacecraft, operate and perform maintenance on the ISS itself, perform spacewalks, and of course get home again. All of this is in service of their primary mission aboard the ISS:
“We’re just operators up there,” says Hoburg, “we work on literally hundreds of different experiments, while the PIs are on the ground. The science work is definitely the purpose of why we’re there. That place is busy — we are working 12 hour days a lot of the time.”
Moon, Mars, and beyond
Many of the students’ questions and Hoburg’s responses were practical, perhaps unsurprisingly in a department full of aerospace engineers. His ISS wish list — free-flying robots to help with holding and carrying; robotic cameras to better document their experiments and other pursuits onboard; improved automation and manual control interfaces in launch, flight, and docking; better solutions to the challenges of stowage and organization — may be the very projects that this generation of engineers tackles.
Hoburg also shared some broader insights from his career as an astronaut so far, including his personal reflection on the famously profound experience of looking at the Earth from space:
“Earth actually looks really big from the ISS,” he said, adding that he would love to see it from the far-away perspective of the Apollo 8 lunar mission. “The overpowering feeling for me was looking at the atmosphere. When you do a spacewalk, it’s pretty in your face that you’re in a vacuum. There is just pure death all around you. And when you look at the Earth, you see how it’s protected by this very, very thin layer.”
Hoburg is enthusiastic for NASA’s upcoming return to the moon, and for the growing commercialization of low Earth orbit that’s allowing NASA to focus on “a transition period beyond low Earth orbit.” He’s keen to help with the lunar missions that will help prepare the next generations of spacefarers to get to Mars.
Above all, he’s excited about the possibilities ahead. “Looking back at the 20th century, I think the moon landing was truly one of our crowning achievements. So part of it is purely inspirational, that spirit of adventure and exploration. Putting humans farther out into space is an audacious goal, worth our time and effort.”

When it comes to that BDE though, mine pales in comparison to Lucien’s.  But don’t take my word for it, allow the man to show you himself:

Thank you so much for your lovely comments, Nonny! 💕 I’m thrilled you enjoy my thirst tags, and I hope you stay as awesome as you already are! 💖🙌🏼

Nobody:
Me: Hello, World!
I have decided to start this blog by popular request. I find it amazing that a) multiple people want to hear what I have to say & b) that I think I might have the follow through to try and make this a thing.
Nobody: Who are you?
I am a girl who spends my time trying to get to as many of the National Parks as I can. Last year I went to 12 Parks and I am looking forward to this summer's trip!
Nobody: 12 Parks! Which ones?!?
Redwood National and State Parks, Yosemite National Park, Death Valley National Park, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Zion National Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park & Lassen National Park.
Nobody: OMG, that's so cool! How long did it take?
About 6 weeks and; I travel by myself. I slept & lived out of my Mini Cooper S the whole time. It was amazing and I feel very blessed that I am able to travel this way.
Nobody: Do you have a 'Gram? I bet you have great pictures!
I do take great pictures and; yes, I do have a Instagram featuring my travels. You can go see it by clicking the link below (but only do so after following me here 😉).
Nobody: What National Parks do you plan to visit in 2020 and; when do you leave?
On May 15th I will leave for Redwood National Park, Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Wind Cave National Park, Badlands National Park, Voyageurs National Park, Isle Royale National Park, Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Glacier National Park, North Cascade National Park, Olympic National Park, Mount Rainer National Park & Crater Lake National Park. I expect to be traveling for about 2 months. (edit: Because of Covid-19, his trip has since been postponed until 2021)
Nobody: Hey, you are going to Redwood National and State Parks again this year?!?!
Yes. I live in an area where I am pretty much surrounded by this park, so; I've made it a tradition to stop here every year as I start my trip. I moved to this area about 3 years ago, just to be close to this park. The Redwoods are my heart and home.
Nobody: I'm fascinated! What is your Name & are you sponsored?
My name is Braid. I currently have no sponsorship. In the past I was lucky enough to have the only Instagram ever sponsored by Starbucks, @KindaDailyStarbucks. If you are interested in sponsorship (because I am awesome, yo) feel free to message me. I am getting new followers every day!
Nobody: Hey! How do you have the time to travel like this?
I am, simply put, the World's-Luckiest-Unluckiest-Girl. But I will tell you all about that (and why I do what I do) in my next blog post. So follow me. Ride virtual shotgun and let's see just where this trip will take us. #LetsGo
