Don't you dare hide this on the tags
"came back wrong" this "lived wrong" that, what about dying wrong. my death will forever cling to you, leaving behind a slimy trail and a metallic taste in your mouth. my soul will forever drag you down like the heavy corpse of a long-dead god, who somehow still grants wishes. you can't tell which one of us is the one not letting go. you know not even your own death will end this.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
This is one aspect I love about Deadpool and If there's a thing that I miss both in canon and fics regarding Wade is that people tend to forget the fact that he generally doesn't get out of his way to help people but he also doesn't get out of his way to ignore them.
In a lot of fanfics mostly to show the difference between him and Spider-Man or other heroes. Deadpool is tended to be depicted in a situation where he pretty much ignores people who need his help. Which is... Interesting is a good premise. But it's not Wade.
Wade is a softy deep down as mostly fucked up as he is and his morals is he has a very simple way and aspect of his character where can be summarized as: He is generally driven by urges, impulses and emotions.
Wade as stoic he tries to appear to be or "crazy" if benefits him. Is an extremely emotional character. Most of his actions are sorely focused on these three core aspects. He's having a bad day? He's going to be a dick about it. He's having a good day? He's going to be particularly nice. He is emotionally involved or invested in the situation, he's going to do what he needs to/want to do to.
It's very simple but writing it is pretty complex. Most of the time where Wade "hero" his way out of things is for a pretty (or petty) selfish reason. But it's not most of the time (looking at the big picture) a bad thing.
He's like clenching his fist most of the time, he's about to be a hero. He doesn't like it. He's terrified of being vulnerable even if it's going to help him or other people (he liking them or not). So he's clenching his teeth, he's doing all he can to play out "I don't care about this, I don't care. I am not involved not my monkeys not my circus not my monkeys– *Get personally involved by a third person, is attacked by someone he gets an icky or is offered money/material compensation or is particularly attached or emotionally involved by the person/situation that is happening or is personally offended by something or someone who's causing it.* "I am involved, I am involved– I'm so– Call me Manager bozo– My monkeys my circus" *grabs his gun.*
And I love so much how you point out how smart he is because... (ruffle tambor) It makes sense!
People tend to also forget that Wade's unpredictability is the second, important and principal advantage Deadpool has... Because the first is:
He's trained. Deadpool and Wade Wilson is military trained, it's well known and even quoted in his old comics because it is an important asset when he's acting in a mission/situation. He's also experienced. He carries years of military, years of street level mercenary, yeas as professional mercenary, hell Wade even did gigs as a goon for a while, a hit man a professional assassin. Jesus, speaking from a criminal or habilities based only? This dude's resume is fucking flawless.
And that's exactly why people keep hiring him. He's good at what he does, if not, the best. Wade is well versed in both military strategy and street smarts. I saw some posts about "Yes bending the rules is important but it's even more important you know the rules so you can bend it 'properly' " and that is such a great asset in writing Deadpool (cannon or fandom) because if you know his abilities then you can bend at his will.
And that's exactly what Wade does. He doesn't fuck shit up because he's insane. He fucks shit up because he knows how to do it in the right way, but his emotional urges or his mental state will make him bend the rules at his will to get what he wants. It's not that Wade can't do things right. It's because he has a hard time sticking to it. Because he survived all these years running against the current.
On these last runs of Deadpool, Wade is mostly driven by luck or what anything that can be funnier in prospect but this is just looking at him by the eyes of other characters and not how he works.
And I bring receipts.
In Cable and Deadpool, one of – by far – fan favorites, Wade teams up with the X-Men to prevent Cable from doing stupid shit. Wade knows the smart thing to do is team up with the X-Men, he knows they're capable, hell he knows their plan will work, he knows he can get a pretty bright future if he stick up to them against Cable and maybe even settle down as one of them. He knows he's capable of it, he knows Nathan's weakness in this particular moment, he has all the guns right. But a his core heart? Deadpool wants to see Nathan succeed. He believes in Nathan. He wants to be proven wrong. Even though he knows the end will be a shit storm.
So he crosses the X-Man.
So he sticks up at Nathan's side.
And shit does hit the fan. As Wade knew it. When he kills the guy in Cable's island he knows Nathan will find out, he knows Nathan will kick him out of the island. He has mental health problems he forgets things easily his mind play tricks on him but doesn't make him dumber.
So why he does it? Because he has the urge to fuck shit up. Because he self sabotages. Is behavior is unpredictable because Wade Wilson will follow his little voice that reacts before thinking the acts on pure impulses. Not for shits and giggles and even if is for shits in giggles. It's a facade. It's not who he is.
If you think Deadpool is dumb, if you think Deadpool it's just sorely crazy? Congrats baby.
You fell for his facade.
One of my favorite examples of "Deadpool's not actually an idiot."
Context: In this issue, Deadpool takes down a corrupt police department in very rural Georgia. Rather than kill 'em all (as suggested by the cops' mastermind), he invites the Feds to catch them all red-handed at their illegal moonshine distillery. Initially, he's cuffed and detained along with everyone else.
His little interaction with the ATF agents at the end is fantastic.

Love it. It's like...summary of my favorite version of Deadpool. He's heroic, he does good things, he doesn't kill anyone in this issue - but he's also dangerous, his good intentions don't erase his bad habits or volatile nature. He definitely wanted to kill the whole lot of 'em (in fairness, one of theirs killed him first, that's why he got involved) and had to dial it back to "wait, I don't do that anymore."
Plus - smart enough to turn his bad reputation into an advantage, sometimes. He probably wouldn't have hurt those agents (not on purpose), but they don't need to know that...
IDK I just love this sequence. :)
