主人公の青年は、サンクトペテルブルクに引っ越してから8年、友人が一人もできず、夢想的で孤独な生活を送っていた。白夜のある晩、橋のたもとで、ある少女に出会い彼の日常は鮮やかになっていく。孤独だった 2 人は、互いに惹かれあい、会う度に気持ちは高まっていく。しかし、実は少女には婚約者がいた。夢のような淡い恋心が芽生え始めたころ、彼の想いは淡く散ってしまう。 青年は少女との出会いを心から喜び、感謝し、誠実に関わろうと努める。それでも少女は青年の前から去ってしまう。そのとき彼は何を思うのだろう。

「白夜」の主人公は、あまりにも人間らしい。
夢想家である彼は、考え込み、想像し、思い上がったと思えば、悲観し、皮肉り、絶望する。そして、今日という日を懸命に生きていくのだ。
この作品の中で、彼は沢山の感情を吐露する。それは、人の素晴らしさだけでなく、人の残酷さ、世の中の無情さによるものでもある。
私達も彼と同様、理不尽な出来事に苛まれる時がある。等身大の人間である彼と共に過ごすこの物語は、あなたの心にも重なることがあるのではないだろうか。
世界は変わっていくものであり、そこには失うことや捨てることへの不安よりも強い期待がそこかしこに溢れている。若々しい期待は、ほとんど場合、期待通りの結果にはならない。その世界の中で私達はどう生きれば良いのか。
世界の若者の多くが、これまでに心の病を経験していると言われる現代。だから私達は、この今の時代に「白夜」という作品を通し、「あなたが抱えるものはあなただけのものではない」ということを伝えたい。そんな自分を、他者を、そして世の中を赦せたのなら、あなたの世界はより一層健やかなものになるだろう。

So I've put a fair few dozen hours into PW4, but mostly just wanted to play the free-choice challenge mode. Story mode's a boring formality to unlock things and all. It's just like Dynasty Warriors games after your first; I' already as familiar with Romance of the Three Kingdoms as y'all will get into. If I never mentioned it I've been a longtime fan of the Musou genre. Dynasty Warriors 4 on the PS2 was a really fun sleepover game growing up.
So like Dressrosa for PW3, Wano is the last chapter in story mode but they make their own version. Thing is...we've talked alternate versions of Wano before. This game came out about halfway through the arc, walk it back a year for development time they should still easily have had Act 1 as a guide. The story mode makes reference to a lot of things from even into Act 2. But it's all on Kin with a little oomph from Momo. I'm not saying this time its deliberate or anything like the Art Nue...but it's interesting seeing Wano without Kiku and the Akazaya as a group and it's not like say, Yamato where they couldn't have used you.
Luffy gets thrown in jail along with more of the crew, Big Mom has more of a split in her ranks, with the extra time Barto/Cavendish/Sabo hear Luffy was captured and join in. Along with a Marine element that feels a lot like SWORD and Blackbeard seeps in too. It works, you could have fleshed that arc out into a streamlined version of Wano that accomplishes much of the same goal. But it feels so empty without the heart of the locals. Because it is Luffy without his motivation.

very strange how hard it is to get info on authoring pre twine interactive fiction. better phrased, i spent like three hours trying to answer a seemingly simple question: what are my options for making narrative games (specifically in the visual novel lineage) that can be played on browsers and my crusty kindle paperwhite 1 both¹. with preexisting tools ofc because i'm not a programmer.
(post got kinda long)
having tried and failed to access decker with the native browser and skipstone both, the only remaining options are vnds and gargoyle. the former is a visual novel interpreter originally made for the nintendo ds², and the latter is an interactive fiction player that supports "all major formats". since vnds takes converted files and has dogshit documentation, i think the gargoyle route is much easier.
however... i have a list of all formats gargoyle's kindle port can read. they're all giving poob. and this doesn't 1:1 tell me what software can create said formats, much less if said software can also output html (et al) files to play on browser.
what i found so far is that parchment can convert "Z-Code, Glulx, TADS, Hugo, or ADRIFT 4". i'm pretty sure these are all parser (versus choice) based which means making a visual novel probably becomes bending tools in unwieldy shapes. cross referencing, i think inform or hugo are the best authoring systems to use.
so now what. is this still worth pursuing? reading docs and rewriting one of my vns for the sake of this thought experiment? i'm not sure there'd be much to gain from that... it's a rather convoluted process that i think strays really far from my initial ideal vision. it's putting a lot more effort into it than using something like twine or videotome or decker³ for nearly the same result for like 99.9% of any possible audience⁴. SAD.

1: why? i'm on a speculative mood okay. and while it's fairly easy to make vns targeting old / low specs computers, the e-ink display has a huge power usage advantage, especially since in a vn you're not updating most of the screen at any given moment. targeting android e-ink tablets is basically trivial, but not only does that go against the old devices thing, those are pretty much nonexistent here. e-ink tablets are a tiny niche. you can only get them in the global north. i mean fuck kindles are essentially the only ereaders available in brasil. and i wanna target the thing i own.
2: which i'm very curious to check out! there seems to be an umineko port. tempting.
3: truth of the matter is decker would be 100% the perfect kindle game engine thing, but without Knowledge i have no way of bridging the two things. and there might be little point in trying: i'm fairly confident that from the pw3 onwards you can just get alpine linux into that thing and use chromium no problem. i just don't have enough storage space (2gb) or ram (512mb) for it (funniest numbers imaginable).
4: so even if i'd bother once or twice there's like no reason for another game maker to do so. it fails as a proof of concept if it's a pain in the ass compared to sticking to pc.

Not even halfway through my re-playthrough of Turnabout Big Top, and I realized something kinda brilliant (well, to me, anyway)
You know how most of Phoenix's clients have been Very Obviously Not Guilty up to this point? Sure, Nick's shaken a bit at the possibility Maya could have Actually Done It in Case 2, but there's no way she could have actually done it for any narrative structure to pay off. I mean, unless you wanted to really write a tragedy and have two more cases without Maya, but that's not what the writer(s) were going for.
ANYWAY, by the time you get to CLOWN CASE, you encounter the self-absorbed, FABULOUS magician, Max Galactica. The thought of him ever getting arrested never occurred to him until after he actually was, and Phoenix had to point out he was, in fact, arrested. Now, you could forgive a man for being a bit dense (willingly or otherwise), but then there's the fact he beans Benjamin Woodman over the head with a glass bottle. Not cool, Max! I'm not even gonna go into WHY he did that, because he's technically a guest at the circus, so it's pretty much not showing a lot of gratitude, and as far as I'm concerned, that's bad enough.
Why am I bringing all this up? Because, despite how kinda-sorta-not-good-a-person Max Galactica is, he's still not guilty of murder.
This brings me to Case 4, which I still need to replay, but in case you didn't know, the defendant in that case acts as dumb as a surfer dude before you draw out his true identity as a wine-glass-swirling guy-who-dunnit. I think this is what Justice of All was really leading up to: Challenging Phoenix Wright, a man who believes in his client with all his heart, with the possibility that sometimes, his client may be guilty after all.
...And it's a real shame we never revisit this concept, because every game after seems to just follow the formula of "Win the Case".
I could go into how the Apollo Justice "Trilogy" (which was so bungled by executive meddling and probably some other factors I have no knowledge about) SHOULD have really challenged Apollo on his drive to fight for justice--although at this point, I'm not sure how you'd have done that-- but the less said about any game after the original Trilogy, the better. And I don't say that as a PW1-thru-PW3 purist (because I'm not,) I say that because I LIKED Apollo Justice despite its many flaws. Games 5 and 6... Not so much.
