He doesn’t remember the exact moment his dear friend – his Pharaoh – had first stolen his heart, or how long it had taken for the feeling of the butterflies in his stomach or the unusual beating of his heart when Atem so much as smiled at him to begin feeling normal.

To become something he can shove deep down inside so none could ever tell.

All he remembers is the shock to his systems when Atem first pulls him aside and kisses him, the joy that burns in his chest; he’s so sure that his legs will give out beneath him, or that the Gods will surely curse him for having had such inappropriate contact with him.

Still, he finds it’s something he wants more of, though he feels too selfish to ever make a move as bold as Atem had, or is it fear of it being a silly whim of his Pharaoh?

Atem is the one to make the first move, to send Mahad a signal so they can meet in secret and continue to play their silly little inappropriate game; he's always the one to make the first move, as Mahad doesn’t dare overstep his boundaries as one of the High Priests.

It’s during one of their private meetings where something about the peace and serenity of the moment – the warmth of Atem’s skin against his own as his Pharaoh keeps himself close to Mahad’s chest by trapping him in an embrace – that lights a flame of boldness within him. 

He reaches out to gently brush a stray lock of Atem’s hair out of the eyes he knows can read him like an open book as they lay cuddled together upon the luxurious cushions in the privacy of the Pharaoh’s quarters. He loves him; he loves Atem so much it hurts, and he feels guilty for always waiting on him to initiate another meeting.

It’s his turn to show how he feels – to let his Pharaoh know how much he means to him, how much he’s always meant to him.

There’s only a brief moment of hesitation before Mahad begins to close the distance between them.

He loves him, and it’s time to let him know.

When they’re mere inches apart, the bold flame in his chest flickers out, leaving him cold. Something tightens around his heart and makes him pause. He can feel his lips brush against Atem’s as he murmurs a flustered apology.

“…M-my apologies, my Pharaoh…” Mahad sits up, heat burning in his cheeks as he silently scolds himself for daring to be bold enough to make such a daring move on someone like Atem.

He loves him; he’s always loved him, but it’s too selfish to want such a love from his Pharaoh. His job is to protect Atem; it always was. 

Love was never a part of that promise – of his duty. Atem can do as he sees fit, and Mahad will always play along, but it’s too inappropriate for him to try and do similar.

“I’m not sure what came over me…” He starts to sit up, distancing himself from his dear friend. “Forgive me for that… I should take my leave now…”
