Road Trip: Those are not rocks, but shards of pottery. On top of the Puye Cliff Dwelling mesa, everywhere you look and step are pieces of centuries old pottery. The pueblo indians lived here for 600 years with up to 1500 people on this mesa at a time. Look, but don't take from this sacred ground. #roadtrip #roadtrippin #travel #travelgram #travelphotography #newmexico #newmexiconomad #tewa #jemez #jemezmountains #puyecliffdwellings #history #pottery (at Puye Cliff Dwellings)

New Mexico’s Native American Heritage Puye Cliff Dwellings I first visited this location in the Spring of 1994 during a visit to New Mexico while I still lived in Massachusetts. Here I am posing beside one of the cliff top dwellings. The photo was taken by my then partner Gregory. “The Puye Cliff Dwellings are the ruins of an abandoned pueblo, located in Santa Clara Canyon on Santa Clara Pueblo land near Española, New Mexico. The site was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Ancient pueblo dwellings Between 900 and 1580, up to 1500 Pueblo Indians lived in the area where they hunted game and cultivated food. Native peoples first settled in the area in the late 10th century of the Pueblo II Era, living in dispersed farmstead dwellings at the east side of the Jemez Mountains. Their settlements increased and changed over time in the Pueblo III Era, when they lived in larger, concentrated villages of Otowi, Puye, Shufinne, Tsankawi, Tsirege, and Tyuonyi.” #NewMexico #NativeAmericanHeritage #IndigenousAmericans #PuebloPeople #CliffDwellings #PuyeCliffDwellings #SantaClaraPueblo #SantaClaraCanyon #EspañolaNM #NewMexico #LandOfEnchantments https://www.instagram.com/p/CJpVceCFbUa/?igshid=1bcflqj3hytdt

New Mexico’s Native American Heritage Puye Cliff Dwellings I first visited this location in the Spring of 1994 during a visit to New Mexico while I still lived in Massachusetts. The first photo shows some of the petroglyphs and the second shows the footholes/handholes used to climb the Cliff. The photos are from Wikimedia Commons and used under a Creative Commons license. “The Puye Cliff Dwellings are the ruins of an abandoned pueblo, located in Santa Clara Canyon on Santa Clara Pueblo land near Española, New Mexico.
