I wanted to go over and touch Papa-Nnukwu, touch the white tufts of hair that Amaka oiled, smooth the wrinkled skin of his chest. But I would not. Papa would be outraged. I closed my eyes then so that if Papa asked if I had seen Jaja touch the body of a heathen—it seemed more grievous, touching Papa-Nnukwu in death—I could truthfully say no, because I had not seen everything Jaja did. My eyes remained closed for a long time, and it seemed that my ears, too, were closed, because although I could hear the sound of voices, I did not make out what they said.

train, sparkle, droplet, paperclip
(3) (these were all for margin(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll put these all in one post for convenience haha but ty for sending a bunch :] I'm glad we have Margin Likers around that's my blorbopus right there
👁️ EYE - what colour are their eyes? do people notice their eyes? is there anything special about them (shows emotion easily, literally magical...)? Margin has blue eyes w the scleras being slightly green tinted, aka Octavio but less intense. She also has the purple striped mask which is the main thing people notice. There isn't anything particularly special about them but her irises do turn red when she uses her venom (I don't have a biological explanation for this it just looks cool)
💤 SLEEPING - do they fall asleep easily? what helps them sleep? Margin has a very specific sleep schedule which she retained even after moving to the surface and then to Splatsville so I think she is one of those people who can just like Fall Asleep On Command almost haha. If she is awake after 10pm she gets so tired. I don't rly have an answer for the second question I guess just not being anywhere loud
🎂 BIRTHDAY CAKE - when is their birthday? do they like celebrating it? Margin's birthday is May 9th which is the date I started writing At Sixes and Sevens, I don't think she celebrates it or even tells other people about it though
🥞 PANCAKE - what is their comfort breakfast? She eats plain buttered toast for breakfast every day this is like, a specific character trait she has. Somehow.
🌺 HIBISCUS - do they have any allergies? I don't think she has any particularly strong allergies but I think pretty much any of the octolings who grew up in the domes probably get hayfever simply because their body isn't adjusted to Lots Of Pollen In The Air (and maybe some other things also along that logic)
✏️ PENCIL - is there a particular quote / lyric that you associate with them? I have a lot of songs I associate w her but the Strongest song lyrics is probably just. the first verse of Ready As I'll Ever Be (from Tangled The Series) but specifically before her character development moment
Believe me I know, I've sunk pretty low But whatever I've done, you deserved I'm the bad guy, that's fine It's no fault of mine and some justice at last will be served
🎨 PALETTE - can they draw? what do they like to draw? (I'm assuming this is what drawing meant because I can't find one w that name otherwise) Margin can sort of draw but mostly just in the case of Making Diagrams. she has made doodles of Squidgy before but will claim it was purely for documentation / scientific purposes.
🪤 MOUSE TRAP - what will always lure them into certain danger? a loved one in danger? a promise of something they are always searching for? This will sound very cliché but if you make Margin think she is doing the right thing / something fully justified and she feels strongly about it she will gladly throw herself into a dangerous situation over it. This definitely happens less as she gets older tho
🚆 TRAIN - what is their answer to the trolley problem? I think she would do the trolley hits one person instead of five but also I guess it'd depend who the one person was lol. If it's all misc strangers then goodbye to that one guy
❇️ SPARKLE - what is their most prized possession? what do they value? Margin doesn't really have many possessions besides like, her bike and the Sharker and whatever is in her room, she values things that are Useful To Her and that's about it. She has a lot of miscellaneous junk from the crater but most of it is either for selling or might be useful for building
💧 DROPLET - random angst headcanon She frequently has nightmares about drowning even though she was never conscious during the one time where she did almost drown
📎 PAPERCLIP - a random fact. Her splashtag looks like this :] (link to the splashtag creator)

thinking about the way i read books vs fics (bc last reblog & @pennyserenade tags)
i've noticed i look for repeated words & phrases & themes *a lot*
like in the stranger by albert camus, any time an emotion was named was striking because of the way it's written. annoyed was most common.
in the alchemist by paulo coelho there were so many things !! and everything connected beautifully. cannot think of specific examples besides "personal legend" and the other phrases alluding to the same thing. but i could pull out my book if anyone wanted to chat about it.
i feel like in sense & sensibility it's going to be all the words i didn't know / don't hear frequently but i know what they mean because the context is so concise, her words exacting in a very refreshing way. (i've also noticed this in the realm of hungry ghosts.)
with purple hibiscus by chimamanda ngozi adichie, it was about the change in kambili & her brother, the way their auntie & cousins brought them back to life. this one's hard for me to put into words, it's so entwined with abuse. it's written in first person so you can really see the shift even in kambili's thoughts. (and i couldn't write in this book like the others because it wasn't mine. although that's true of the stranger also....but that was drastically shorter and i spend a crazy amount of time still thinking about it lol)
the perks of being a wallflower is a little different. you can see charlie's growth as a writer, and the changes as he gets himself on the path to healing. to holding more than one truth. something i feel is inherently healing. this one is much more emotional & personal to me. hits close to home kind of thing, as in i'm not sure i've ever related to a character to more. (and with this one, i merely highlighted page numbers with my favorite quotes & passages, rather than underlining/highlighting the actual text or making notes.) i think it would be an interesting book to pick apart linguistically. one thing i love is when he starts incorporating the words bill teaches him, and his whole thing about he doesn't understand why you would use certain words when people may not know them. wanting to be understood but also valuing those words. the first couple times he does it, he points it out. sometimes putting it quotes? until it becomes normal for him — and it isn't excessive!! it's never clunky. it's still a book that's meant to be kind of simple (linguistically), like it is literally for struggling teens. in so many ways.
in divine secrets of the ya-ya sisterhood — oh my god it's 100% the french words mixed into their lexicon, the words they say or use a specific way that they create their own meaning, the redefining of words, the creation of words (amongst friends & family). oh it's a delight. the way sidda talks about breaking down a movie, rewatching over & over to make sure she didn't miss anything m. thinking about the themes & literary allusions — a stark contrast to her mother's experience when watching, which was extremely in the moment, emotional, and tactile with her friends. the dialogue & letters, the descriptions for every sense. (honestly wish i was reading it so i could make an absolute mess of our copy but it's my current audiobook.)

“There are thousands of people in Basingstoke who don’t know Jesus as Lord and saviour and my heart is to focus on finding new and innovative ways to share the Good News with people from all age groups and backgrounds.
I am so excited to be working with the people of the Basingstoke Parish, the new team as they begin to arrive, and with others from across the town and the diocese as the church here steps into this next phase of its ministry in the town.
It is also such a blessing to have the support of the Bishop of Basingstoke, the Diocese of Winchester, and our partners from the Holy Trinity Brompton (HTB) network as we work towards continued revitalisation of the church and play our part in the transformation of society here in Basingstoke.” (Hudson in Pendragon, 2022).

The house looked as though the architect had realized too late that he was designing residential quarters, not a church. The arch that led to the dining area looked like an altar entrance; the alcove with the cream telephone looked ready to receive the Blessed Sacrament; the tiny study room off the living room could have been a sacristy crammed with holy books and Mass vestments and extra chalices.

there are SO many quotes like this in Purple Hibiscus, I swear to god Chimamanda is one of the most well-written authors I've experienced! her use of allegories and metaphors paints such a beautiful picture about Kimbili and her life in the book, I definitely recommend!
“We did that often, asking each other questions whose answers we already knew. Perhaps it was so that we would not ask the other questions, the ones whose answers we did not want to know.”

I want to hold his hand, but I know he will shake it free. His eyes are too full of guilt to really see me, to see his reflection in my eyes, the reflection of my hero, the brother who tried always to protect me the best he could. He will never think that he did enough, and he will never understand that I do not think he should have done more.

Thanks for the tag! @illarian-rambling
Here’s some bits from Weavers. Sorry, it’s going to be a bit out of order but…..
Red: ✨from chapter two✨
“What was my mother’s role?” I sigh, after taking a sip of the chilled reddish-colored drink in the small glass that was on the tray. The drink is slight sweetened with a faint fruity taste.
“The hibiscus tea is normally served with dinner. Weaver’s like their teas.” She says with a light laugh, “Your mother was- she was torn between two roles.”
Green: ✨from chapter three✨
The chair is sitting in the colorful light that shines through the large square stained glass window. The window’s glass is arranged into a massive picture of a tree with many branches that spread out in all directions with big green leaves. It’s beautiful.
Blue: ✨chapter four✨
He returns to his sandwich as I turn the page to begin reading the strange interworkings of not one, but two minds. The writing in the journal is in three colors of inks; red, blue and black. Master Malakai’s thoughts and opinions are in black, quotes from Theodore Alaster Malakai are in blue and his notes on them are red.
It may be the most organized disorganized mess I’ve ever red, the ramblings of two men attempting to make sense of Light and Darkness; one cannot exist or be experienced without the other but both can exist independently.
Yellow💛: I will say, this one was the hardest one for me to find. This will be from ✨chapter 16✨and it’s not posted yet so…
Yellow. Orange. Red. Purple. Black. Darkness follows with the falling of what looks like snow? I smell it now, the smell that Soren Reign described as smokey and sweet. It’s smoke from something burning above. It’s not snow falling, it’s ashes.
Hi @elizaellwrites! It's been a second, but thanks for the tag :)
ROY G. BIV TAG
Rules: find excerpts in your WIP with the colors of the rainbow listed
I'm curious to see how far I can get in Starbreaker
Red:
Loqang grimly enfolded Anarac’s red-skinned hand in his larger, scarred ones. Beyond the illusion, he could just see the rippling impression of the god’s hundred aqueous wings spreading in preparation for flight.
“Are you ready, my friend?” Loqang asked.
Yellow:
Faalgun and Kaulakri glanced around in confusion, as did Anarac, before one of Faalgun’s yellow eyes landed right upon the staircase he hid under. Anarac froze at once—a mouse staring down a hawk. Don’t see me. Please don’t see me. You’re dangerous. People are dangerous, and I can’t take any more danger.
“Hello?” Faalgun called cautiously.
Anarac dug his nails into the deck, shaking slightly, unsure of what to do. He was sure if he tried to speak, nothing but the scream would come out. He huddled more snugly under the stairs and did his best to pretend he was anywhere else. Sun’s Light protect me, I never should’ve come.
Green:
Pushing through, Anarac recalled the odd braided belts the Nabafyrian warrior-priests had worn. Some had been decorated with tufts of what looked like hair. Nyda wore a similar belt—two strips of brown leather stuck through with tiny braids of green, red, brown, and black. He wondered what the significance was. She had seemed put out by Pash’s assumption that she was a guard, though, then again, she seemed put out by most things.
Blue:
Blinking liquid dark eyes, she stared called up towards the helm. “Are we stable? I’m not….”
She trailed off as she turned back and finally took in what was beyond the engine. A huge blue globe hung in the sky like a looming titan, bigger than anything the mortal mind could truly imagine. The selkie’s hands unclenched and her lips parted to reveal pointed teeth as she stared out at the planet of Illaros for the first time.
In typical Illaros fashion, no land was visible. People always waxed poetic about the vastness of the continent of Iarl or the majestic spread of the Janazi Isles, but that was really only because no Illari person had ever experienced anything else. All the land on their planet made up an optimistic three percent of the total surface area. This was a water world, in truth, dominated by the vast and terrible Oresea that even now remained impassable as the people of Illaros took their first tottering steps into the black of space. It was a blue, storm-tossed globe that stared down at their suddenly miniscule ship like a milky eye.
Ok, not bad for 30 pages. And I'm always happy to drop the secret Illaros-waterworld lore :)
I'll tag @ominous-feychild @gothamxwattpad @far-cry-from-finality @watermeezersworldofkaldria @world-of-iridensia and anyone else who wants in!
