Over 50 jobs axed as steelwork contractor collapses

Portsmouth-based steelwork contractor Conder Allslade has been placed into administration.

Around 50 staff were laid off on Wednesday after it was revealed the firm had been placed in administration.

One said: “We were in the dark about what was happening. I was told the directors called in insolvency experts just before Christmas.

“It seems the directors were trying to rescue the business or find a sale but failed.”

RSM is acting as administrator for the steelwork contractor, whose 2019 accounts were overdue. In last published company records for 2018 the firm revealed a £1.2m loss from £16m turnover.

The collapse of Conder Allslade comes as the sector is under increasing pressure from both the impact of Covid on cashflow and sharply rising steel prices which began to kick in last summer and are now 40% higher.

Conder Allslade was acquired by the diversified Purico Group, run by entrepreneur Nathu Puri in 2008.

The Conder name was associated with the introduction of the portal frame in the 1950s.

International Engagement: Astronomy in Chile

As mentioned in the previous blog post. Chile is home to 41% of the worlds astronomical infrastructure. We have the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, the Cerro Pachon Observatory, the Llano de Chajnantor Observatory, the Pampa La Bola and Purico Complex, the Paranal Observatory, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, the La Silla Observatory, the Las Campanas Observatory, Cerro El Roble Observatory, the Manuel Foster Observatory, and TIGO (Transportable Integrated Geodetic Observatory.

International engagement is present here everyday as astronomers work with one another to understand the fate and origin of the cosmos, if there is life on other planets, and just where are we on this pale blue dot. Everyone has a story to tell just as the universe does. While many can name one or two major telescopes, can we name the people behind their lenses? Can we name those who decided to build the first telescopes? Can we name anything of the people of this country and its culture or is it just one big array collecting data.

To internationally engage, we need to engage with the community. It’s story is just as vibrant as the one our universe has to tell. And I have no idea how to do since ample telescope time is already given to the community of observers.
