Meet Spider Pea!! or Mara. He is based off of Maratus purcellae, which is the smallest peacock spider. They have the usual web slinging abilities, but they can also shrink, their smallest size being 2mm tall. Being able to get that small means that he can get into places where they aren’t wanted >:3
Fun fact, the Maratus purcellae has only been seen 9 times that was delightful when looking up reference pictures
more doodles also spider picture underneath :3

Everytime i see a jumping spider im so scared but for them! Tiny baby! Too tiny! And seeing them on your hand gives me like mild anxiety because tiny baby barely size of fingernail. Not like bad anxiety just "Please please be carefull you little angel"
yeah I feel that in my soul. it’s bad enough when the spiderlings are that tiny, i can’t imagine keeping the species that stay that tiny..... like this totally not anxiety inducing adult male maratus purcellae

Street Art Assignment
By: Ashlee Purcella
We were tasked with posting a collage of atleast 15 different imagery, from 3 different sites and in 3 different styles. I've created a collage of artwork samples from the East Side Gallery (East side), East Side Gallery (West side), the Kreuzberg Street art site, and the Dircksenstrafze Street Art site. Going back to one of the articles we read by Emma Russell called "Writing on the Wall: the form, function, and meaning of tagging", tags and graffiti are created for one of three reasons: to be a voice again oppression, gang related tagging, and tagging as a part of hip hop culture. Stylistically Street Art can take three forms: images, images and words, or words in disguise. For my assignment I tried to get examples of all three of these styles as well as providing examples of pieces created for each of the three functions listed above.

Project 2: The Art of Living Collaboration
Title: Fossilized Sunshine
Materials: Plastic Bottles, sticks, weeds, rocks, leaves
Group members: Ashlee Purcella, Amanda Byzewski, Abby Eagen, Katie Roth
Inspiration: Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers,” Dulwich street art tour, and Riggle’s article “Street Art- The Transfiguration of the Commonplaces”
Artist Statement: For our collaborative piece, my group members and I created our own three-dimensional interpretation of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers out of found materials around Urban Spree. Our idea originally started as a two-dimensional recreation on the sidewalk that would wash away on its own, but quickly evolved into the three-dimensional version we ended with. We took inspiration from the Dulwich street art tour, where artists picked a historical painting and interpreted it into their own version. We also took ideas from Riggle’s article, as far as making our piece dependent on the area, as our piece depends on sunlight exposure, and it is made from found objects in the area, and it is also ephemeral, it is easily destroyed and forgotten.
While looking for materials, we collected plastic bottles from our classmates that were about to be thrown in the trash, and Abby came up with the idea to cut them into the flowers. I was responsible for cutting and forming most of the flowers, helping attach them to the sticks, and helping to find areas to take pictures of it. Amanda also helped cut flowers, Ashlee collected most of the natural materials, and we all helped arrange the flowers. We all worked really well together and we all equally contributed to the ideas and the final product.

So, if we are talking about sparklemuffins, why not talk about peacock spiders in general!
This lovely species of spiders is native to Australia. Most mesure between 2.5 and 6 millimeters. Even if they are poisonous spiders, their venom isn’t even strong enough to kill a big fly, they’re too tiny to hurt a human. They are known as dancing spiders, because the male will elevate and move their third pair of legs, along with their abdomens, and it looks like dancing. The males are known for being extremely colorful, while the females are usually a dull brown or gray. In the past decade, as research of this species grew, around 80 new species have been discovered.
Here, have some of my favorites!
A Maratus Nemo. Isn’t he the cutest bastard (affectionate) out there?
A Maratus Constellatus. Just-
JUST LOOK AT THEM.
Maratus Robinsoni my beloved.
Maratus Purcellae. A yellow spider, my weakness.
The Maratus Speculifer looks like he has a beard.
YOUUUU! A Maratus Banyowla.
Just go to peacockspider.org and have a look for yourself. Tell me that they aren’t lovely.
(I hope you liked them. Sparklemuffins introduced me to peacock spiders a long while ago and as a spider lover I immediately fell in love. I hope that Sparklemuffins are doing for you the same that they did for me)

Heya! As an entomology enthusiast I’ve been looking into jumping spiders lately and I can’t find this anywhere on the Internet; what’s the smallest species of jumping spider?
it’s tricky to say for sure which jumping spider species is THE smallest, but i can certainly tell you about some tiny dudes!
maratus purcellae and maratus robinsoni are both 2mm in size as adults. this page has some amazing pictures of them showcasing how ridiculously tiny they are. the 59 species in the maratus genus are found in the southern half of australia and are well-known for their dazzling courtship displays. their small size may allow them to get away with being so brightly coloured - larger predators may fail to notice them in the environment.
sitticus pubescens, sitticus saltator and sitticus concolor are about 3mm as adults. these spiders are typically found around human habitations, sometimes under stones and sometimes inside houses. on sunny days they can be found hanging out on fence posts to warm up under the sun. these little guys can be found all across the world, including countries like england, belgium, spain, turkey, kazakhstan and the netherlands. image credit here!
some habronattus species range between 2mm and 3mm, though the average for the genus is more like 5mm to 6mm. the genus contains at least 100 species, distributed across north and south america and into canada. unique to the genus, these tiny spiders prefer the colour red. they use red as their basis for choosing prey and mates. the species pictured is habronattus americanus, photo credit here.
other tiny spiders include:
- spruce-fir moss spider (microhexura montivaga) is the smallest species of tarantula. measuring 3-4mm, the spider is endangered and found exclusively on the moss-covered rocks of the southern appalachian mountains as high as 6,643 feet. in recent years the forests have become infested by the balsam woolly adelgid, a pest introduced from europe, which destroys forest canopy and subsequently causes the moss mats to dry out.
- patu digua is a very small true spider species. the male holotype and female paratype were collected in colombia. the males measure about 0.37 mm. by some accounts, this may be the smallest spider in the world.
- assassin/pelican spiders (austrarchea) are found in australian coastal rainforests. described as living fossils, these spiders may have existed as long as 200 million years ago when the supercontinent pangea began to break up. they measure anywhere from 3mm to 8mm.
new spiders are discovered every year, so maybe some day we’ll find a spider even smaller than the peacock spiders :’)
