Hello! So I'm in the UK and from what I can piece together from twitter, there seem to have been a surprisingly high number of Dems elected yesterday. But also... I know nothing about what this election(s) were really about, why they happened now, and what this means going forward? And you're good at laying shit down... Could you give like a basic rundown or your analysis of what's, uh, happening?
There’s no clean answer to this, because the elections last night are completely state-dependent. Like…some states didn’t have anything last night at all. Other states had “local” elections (which means, not state-wide, but things like district judges, mayors, district controllers, school board officials, city officials, etc.). Other states, including the widely reported OR, VA, and NJ had state-level elections (likely in addition to municipal-level) where the state legislature and/or governorship was up for grabs.
Overall, there was a democratic sweep of like, everything. Hotly contested seats went easily in that favor, whereas “safe” seats were suddenly toss-ups. For instance, my district is pretty conservative, especially at the local level (it’s one of the ones targeted by “flip a district” for 2018 since it’s been more and more borderline for national elections), and yet 51.63% of voters walked into the booth and cast a straight-party ballot for Democrats (38.48% are registered Dem, 44.11% registered GOP, and 17.41% registered independent). That is HUGE.
Then there’s states like Virginia where, following recount, Democrats may have retaken the House of Delegates, which was just not supposed to happen at all. The governor race was important, but something like that was NEVER expected. Even if GOP retains a majority, it’s a slim one, and there’s now a Democratic governor to veto anything terrible. Like, for instance, obviously gerrymandered voting districts for VA’s next map…something that more or less “hides” votes of certain parties by either packing them all into one district, or spreading them all out. Gerrymandering is why 55% of PA voted to be represented in the national House by a Democrat, but only 5/18 seats are actually filled by one.
Also, it’s important to understand just how much state governments affect policy and protections. It’s at the state-level things like, right-to-discriminate bills are passed (in Indiana, for instance). Or on a more positive side, bills that set measures and regulations to combat climate change (California with their CAFE standards comes to mind). Voter suppression occurs at a state level. Then dripping down to the municipal level, there’s city mayors, there’s distract attorneys, there’s school board directors…they all set the agenda and can really drive things that immediately touch people. Hell, one of the biggest wins of last night was Philly’s district attorney, a huge advocate for the rights of BLM. This is going to impact a lot in the city, which is the 5th largest city in the country.
All this said, the takeaways that matter most are this:
No seat should be thought of as uncontestable. Everything is on the table in 2018
A lot of democrats last night ran unopposed, which shows the power of actually running. So many seats just go to the default because people aren’t stirred to do anything
Progressives can win. Democrats don’t have to be appeasing centrists to get elected. A democratic socialist was elected to Virginia’s House (replacing the majority whip, no less). This is why we need to primary them all, and then unite in the general. We did it here, we can do it in 2018.
We don’t need Blandy McWhitebreads running. A transwoman beat the gross bigot who spearheaded VA’s anti-trans bathroom bills. A black transwoman was elected to the Minneapolis City Council. NJ got its first Sikh mayor (Hoboken), as well as first black mayors in a couple of key cities. A lesbian mayor was elected in Seattle.
This is why it’s important that people turn out to vote. I don’t have a particularly large district, and many of the seats were down to
Now, that said, there can’t be any resting on laurels in 2018. This was an anti-Trump vote, plain and simple. It was also one that came in the wake of the disastrous attempt at healthcare “reform” and two mass shootings. Top issues exit polls found for VA voters? Guns and healthcare.
It’s only good for the Democrats that like, Medicaid/Medicare continue to enjoy support (expansion passed EASILY in Maine), but it doesn’t mean they can rely on the climate to be the same in 2018. Additionally, the alarming number of straight-ticket votes shows that this wasn’t a platform-driven election across the board (there’s individual elections where that’s not true). The challenge Democrats have is standing for something (imo principles of economic, social, and environmental justice are the no-brainers and easily winnable), and well…we’ve still got the DNC pumping out bumper-stickers reading, “I mean, have you seen the other guys?”
It’s attainable, for sure. But it requires engagement to continue, especially in the 2018 primary process. We need strong candidates. What this showed was that conventional ideas of “strength” (moderate, “down-to-earth” stances, and safe demographics) are flipped on their head now. Strength now seems to be passion and authenticity. Or at least, that’s the best working theory I’ve got.
Now, we wait.

For the prompt, AU where Dany meets puppyGhost.
White as Snow
At Starfall, even in the high fastness of the Red Mountains, Daeneryshad never seen snow. Dornish did not do well with the cold, everyone knew that.So when Eddard Stark sent his raven requesting that Ashara Dayne’s only childvisit Winterfell, it was cause for confusion. After her mother’s death, she andCousin Edric were alone in Starfall.
“Maybe he wants to betroth you to his heir,” Ned said. The words lingered in her head during the long, long ride north. Her septa andguards nattered on about the possibility.
“Imagine that, milady!” Septa Raina said, “you wouldbe wed to the Warden of the North. A lovely southern bride to a proud northernfamily.”  Daenerys nervously braided andunbraided her long silver hair as the carriage jostled along the kingsroad. Shehadn’t had her moon blood yet, but at thirteen, the bust and hips of her gowns grewtighter.  Lord Eddard Stark had severalsons, she recalled, even a bastard. The weather grew colder as they rode pastthe Neck, colder still as they arrived in Winterfell. The sky was leaden andgrey, and Daenerys shivered. Both at the weather and the prospect of equallycold and hard people who lived there. Her sworn shield Ser Adam helped her fromthe carriage. The bailey bustled with people and Lord Stark stood beside hislady wife, their children arrayed beside them.
“My lady, welcome to Winterfell--” Lord Stark began. Ashove knocked her to her knees. A blur of snow white fur. Daenerys was eye toeye with a large white wolf. Its tail wagged madly and then it pounced, lickingher face, her hands, whatever it could reach. The ticklish rasp of its warm wettongue on her face made her giggle.
“Seven hells, Ghost! Down, boy! Down, damn you!” a boy’svoice cracked over the words. The wolf gave her one last parting lick beforemoving off. Daenerys sat up, grinning and wiping slobber from her face. The boywas whipcord thin, his eyes dark and wide beneath a mop of black curls.
“Are you all right, milady?” he said, offering her ahand up. Daenerys felt the disapproving glare of her septa and mustered hermanners.
“I am quite well, thank you. I hadn’t expected such anenthusiastic greeting,” she said. The boy’s bashful smile made her heart dance.

L, B, Q??
L: London! My favorite city! I spent a semester there in college, and while I don’t think I’d ever move there permanently, I’d love to spend a year or so there. But it’s too far away and too damn expensive.
B: BATS. My favorite wild animal (cats are my favorite domestic animal). I particularly like fruit bats, but insectivores are neat too.
Q: Queens are always a thing

Hi, you've mentioned "primarying" quite a few times on your blog and I must say I have no idea what it is. I mean, I know what primary elections are, but I don't really know what you mean in the context of your posts - you seem to imply that it would give insufficiently Leftist Dems a hard time, although I could be reading that wrong. Would you mind posting a quick explanation, and why you think it's a good thing? (Sorry if this sounds demanding/disagreeable, not my intent at all!)
Oh, it means to run incredibly progressive candidates in the primary elections and oust the current establishment candidates. Think what the Tea Party did to the GOP in 2010.

I can make pretty decent cupcakes somewhat consistently, but I have terrible luck with bigger cakes. They burn on top, or don't cook in the middle, or get super dry, or fall apart when I'm transferring them from pan to cooling rack, or cooling rack to plate... It stresses me out so much that I've kind of stopped bothering. Any tips, general or specific, for cake-making?
When your batter manages to make it into the oven instead of getting lost in, say, a straw, these are few things that help:
Level the batter in the pan before putting it in the oven. Run an offset spatula around it to ensure even distribution.
Make sure the pans are in the center of the oven. Rotate the pans halfway through baking to ensure all areas are getting the same amount of heat.
Use a cake tester or a toothpick to ensure it's done (NO FINGERS! Though, that is how you met someone in the ER...) If it's still raw, put it back in for 5 minute increments until the middle is done, testing after each increment.
Dryness: Use a high fat butter (Lurpak, Plugra, Kerrygold, etc.) Plain full fat yogurt and sour cream are also helpful. While skim milk is often fine in recipes, if a cake is turning out dry, go full fat. Also make sure to use the correct size eggs--large vs. extra large does make a difference. Measure using liquid measuring cups for liquid, and dry for dry.
Transferring cakes: Cake lifters and/or giant cookie spatulas are lifesavers. They're cheap. They're also really good for swatting anyone who tries to get their paws on your cake.
Don't be afraid. Eating mistakes is one of life's greatest joys.

When you get this list five things that make you happy, and then send it to the last ten ppl you have notes from in your activity ‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌<3 (via puppyghosts )
We're fostering a kitten for the first time and it's pretty delightful. She was a feral kitten and we're still trying to get her used to people and teaching her to play.
Walking though a city at night makes me happy. The other night I went for a walk in Pa’ia (not a city; literally two streets) but it reminded me of how much I enjoy that activity. In college we learned about Flânerie, the act of strolling the city, a fancy word for a simple pleasure. I think there's something special about doing the walk alone, and something subversive about doing it as a woman. Anyway, in Pa’ia I bought an overpriced gelato and looked in all the lit up windows and it was the best time I had all week.
Letters from friends. I got a pack of letters from m and I wrote back as fast as I could, in order to sustain this long distance conversation we've had running for several years. I've got a couple recent postcards propped up around my desk, and the first step of a mail art project has just arrived from Philly. I write many more letters than I receive, and I enjoy the writing and sending just as much.
A good day in the studio. I've had a couple those lately. It's nice. Mainly I've been making paste paper, which is not particularly challenging, but it's fun. I got one sheet that I liked a lot. I've also run a few polymer plates through the etching press, and it worked much better than expected, and now I'm probably boring you.
The gelato I mentioned above? Thai coconut ginger, and it was amazing.

puppyghosts replied to your post “Just read that Nigel Farage piece and looked up the thing about Diane Abbott and "Diane Abbott racist" came up under auto-complete and so I'm looking at this and I'm confused as hell why she was called racist — I don't live in the UK or follow UK politics though.”
ahahahahaha people actually tried to go to the police because she tweeted something that could be read as insulting to whites? unbefuckinglievable
and these are almost certainly the same people who whine about how hate speech legislation is ~hurting their freedom of speech~ it's fucking ridiculous
melteddali replied to your post “fahmadfaiz replied to your post: you get a load of these people who...”
In the states you have the same "left wing" people supporting the democrats uncritically. Hell the only real reason to even vote democrat if you're going to is because 3rd parties don't get any representation, and republicans are grotesque clowns
american democracy is obscene even by bourgeois representative democracy standards, american elections are a total joke
but like yeah it gets frustrating to me when people say "oh you need to vote <2nd major party> otherwise you're just helping <1st major party>!!" or whatever like just talking america the democrats in many states are indistinguishable from republicans *in every way* and like i hate when electoral politics is presented as "the only way to do things" but voting for anything other than one of the 2 main parties is considered terrible and insulting. like obviously i don't consider voting a way of making *radical* change but although it can make useful change in some circumstances just saying "vote straight ticket democrat" is completely useless
sorry that was incoherent i just hate the "vote lesser of 2 evils" shit where if you don't do that or you don't vote you're a disgusting monster who's responsible for everything bad that happens

puppyghosts replied to your post: I cooked ice cream bread I have no ide...
what? how? what?
http://www.food.com/recipe/ice-cream-bread-230509 or in video format https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gifcJIz4Tas
i tried it cause we had a bunch of leftover vanilla ice cream we couldn't fit in the freezer. it tastes pretty good! i used approximately the proportions on the first thing and added a bit of cinnamon, it's very much a bread but it's slightly sweet and it tastes good imo i mean idk if i'd specifically like buy ice cream to make it but it's nice and very very easy cause it's just ice cream and flour + baking powder haha and you can't go wrong. if i were doing it again i'd err on the side of a bit more ice cream i think but it's fine as is.
i just don't want people to get too excited and it be bad or anything haha
