Gunther

When I look over at him, I keep expecting his chest to rise and fall; but it isn't My favorite soul passed away today. His heart couldn't keep up with the rest of him. Moments before, I held him in my arms, feeding him some honey and trying to get him to drink some water. And then his entire body seized up, the lack of oxygen catching up with him. My dad rushed over and we held onto him whispering to him that it's going to be okay. I held his head in my hand, feeling the pressure of the dead weight consuming him. Fear ripped my heart in two as my dad pulled Gunther close to him and whispered, "he's gone." I cried. I cried so fucking hard I forgot how to breathe. He was my best friend. My little brother. When I was going through my rough patches with mental illness, he knew and he cuddled me and made sure I was ok. He was my bug. My punkybaby. G. We got him when I was 4 years old. I don't remember life without him. But for some godforsaken reason, my heart is light. I'm devastated, but I'm doing ok. I'm replaying all of my happy times with him over and over in my head. It keeps makin me cry but it's because I'm happy. I'm so damn happy that god gave me the best dog a girl could ask for. He loved me and he made sure I knew it. No matter how many time I got mad at him, or how many tutus I put on him, he always licked my face afterwords (as long as I gave him treats) I taught him new tricks when he was 12 years old. He loved learning and he loved seeing me happy and proud of him. I got to love him. 13 years of unconditional love and I got the absolute honor of him dying in my arms.

Today's Throwback Thursday still makes me a little be sad but also a little bit hopeful. I was watching Hulu with my wife the other night and a car insurance commercial came on. The pitch hinged on the relationship between a Dad and his daughter -- who was an athlete through and through. Dad struggled through all her kid behaviors: kicking soccer balls into his car, bouncing lacrosse balls on the ceiling, and eventually driving her to her high school football match (which she wins, by the way). Is it revolutionary that a girl is an athlete? No, of course not. But I had no such commercials to casually absorb as a kid. Commercials about girls were commercials about little princesses and willowy dancers. I looked at my wife and said, "You know, I am hopeful that at least our kids will grow up in an environment very different from what we grew up in." We're not "there" yet -- I'm so horrifyingly aware of that, but we have made progress and when I'm full of despair thinking about the coming reign of Trump...
