Feminists should stop watching anime, and Magical Girl series made for Otaku men are the BEST magical girl series. You cannot change my mind.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Western Feminists: Magical Girls is such an empowering genre! Finally a great space where girls can be comfortable being girls! Feminism for young women!
Japanese Feminists: It's fine if you enjoy the shows but we've stated about a dozen times now that we don't find the Magical Girl genre to be progressive in the slightest. Not only do they continue to enforce the very strict gender roles for women in Japan that we've been trying to combat, but a lot of the more contemporary shows are made by otaku men for other otaku men and the young girl characters are often sexualized. Are you listening to us?
Western Feminists: GIRL POWER!!!! :)

As per my previous sleep deprived post , these are the anime I clearly remember watching as a child on the anime on demand cable network thingy.
😅 Although... I had no business watching Wandaba Style, Puni Puni Poemy, and Devil Hunter Yohko as a ten year old. My brain at the time associated female protagonists/a majority of the characters being female as a show with a female demographic. What I didn't know was that these anime are actually for an older straight male demographic and the overabundance of female nudity and lewdness flustered me so much lol. But I guess it helped me in a way, since it awakened my deep aesthetic attraction to the female form that I have been supressing at the time

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! Review
Tumblr media
In recent years, demons have graced TV screens, from Vivienne Medrano’s two interrelated web series, Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, to Castlevania on Netflix, and are set to premiere in the upcoming series Satina and Far-Fetched. One such series brings this to the fore: a funny slice-of-life Japanese anime series named The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, which is airing on Japanese television networks and airing on the streaming service Crunchyroll.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 11, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the fifth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on October 13, 2021. I used some images in this article which wouldn't have been allowed on The Geekiary, like the second image specifically, as they are a bit prudish.
This anime series is based on a manga by Wakame Konbu, seven volumes of which have been published, three of which have been released in English. As a big fan of Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel, RWBY (with its elements of horror), the space fantasy Final Space, or Disenchantment, which has a demon named Luci, this series, with some mature themes, drew me in from the time I watched a clip on the Crunchyroll YouTube channel. While I watched many anime before, this one seemed unique in its own way and pulled me in with its situational comedy,  which has a key role in the plot, whether from the actions taken by the protagonist or the funny situations she comes across every day.
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! begins with Jahy, a beautiful and powerful brown-skinned demon, voiced by Naomi Ōzora, who has been thrown into the human world, stripped of her power and privilege, after the Magical Girl smashes a huge mana crystal, source of her power into thousands of pieces. Unlike in her previous world, where she was the second-in-command of the Dark Realm, with everyone at her beck and call, in the human world she is destitute. She is living in a run-down apartment, for which she refuses to pay rent, and works at a local pub, run by her the sister of her landlord, Ryou, as a waitress, as a literal wage slave. Due to her loss of power, she can only remain in her “true” adult form, wearing an outfit that makes her less than half-clothed but shows off her physical features, for a short period of time. As such, she spends most of her time in the body of a young elementary-school-age kid, only wearing a ratty white shirt. But she is not sexualized, and neither is any other character on the show’s cast unlike other anime.
Tumblr media
The 20-episode first season of The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! began on August 1, and it is currently more than halfway through its order. It starts with Jahy beginning her search for mana crystals, is helped by humans like the manager of the pub where she works or a young girl named Kokoro, and comes across a bigger mana crystal. Saurva, a tomboyish girl who wants to push Jahy from her role, but ends up improving her reputation instead, Jahy catches a cold, with her manager looking after her, and Ryou calls the police on the real Magical Girl, not the man who had been cosplaying as one. In following episodes, the Magical Girl snatches Jahy’s huge mana crystal resulting in Jahy getting drunk that night. Following this, Jahy gets into an exercise routine, goes to a public bath with her manager and Ryou, accidentally traps herself inside her apartment by setting traps for the Magical Girl, and Jahy learns that the Magical Girl wishes to destroy all the mana crystals so people can be saved from misfortune, a goal which horrifies Jahy.
The show excels at subverting anime tropes, like a master-servant relationship, or themes within the magical girl genre. In terms of the former, Jahy’s former lieutenant, Druj, is very successful at exploiting humans through her role as a corporate executive and lives in a high-end apartment. Embarrassed that her former subordinate is now doing better than her, she is jealous, attempting to hide her true living situation, where she is living poor and destitute. In the case of the latter, the Magical Girl appears to be a jerk at first and is shown in a negative light so the audience empathizes with Jahy, despite the terrible acts she had committed in the past. The show, similar to Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and Villainous/Villanos, encourages the audience to root for the “villain” rather than the “hero.”
Although the magical girl genre has been lampooned in series like Magical Girl Friendship Squad in the past, this is the first anime series I have seen that does the same to the genre, although not the same as the surrealist 2001 original video animation titled Puni Puni Poemy. In the case of The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, the Magical Girl and Jahy both have their own transformation sequences of sorts, with Jahy able to transform from her childlike form into an adult form, and the Magical Girl going from her form as a high school girl named Kyouko Jingu to a magical girl, making the series, in this sense, resemble the magical girl genre.
Tumblr media
If The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! is renewed for a second season, it will hopefully encourage more to lampoon the magical girl genre. For one, the series could confirm that there are LGBTQ characters in the series which are in the main cast, rather than having those who appear in only one episode like Theoda and Pothina in one episode of Cleopatra in Space or the recurring character, Xochi Jalapeno, in a number of episodes of Victor and Valentino. Even if this doesn’t happen in a second season, the show still shines through with its animation, voice acting, writing, and hilarity, unlike others that are airing, especially when it comes to animation. It also shares characteristics with other series in that Jahy herself has an identity crisis, trying to discover who she is as a demon in the human world.
In the end, the series is exciting and fun to watch, especially with Jahy’s vigor and ambition. It is something that everyone should watch, despite its mature themes and very rare fan service.
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! is available on Crunchyroll for streaming.

Excel Saga was the first anime series I got into that didn't air on US television. I was really obsessed with it as a teenager. Y'know how kids used to do cringey stuff like the "Naruto Run"? Well, I never did that but I did quote Excel Saga all the time, which actually might have been worse.
Anyway, I haven't watched Excel Saga since middle school, so I decided to buy the entire series on DVD again. I never liked the ADV box, so I snagged one of the Japanese boxes off Ebay too. Not only is it beautifully designed but it also fits my copy of Puni Puni Poemy! It's autographed by the director too, which is neat.
Tumblr media
I'm about seven episodes in and it's still pretty funny! Some parts are embarrassing for sure but still pretty fun to watch. My biggest gripe is that the Nabeshin and Pedro segments are incredibly unfunny. Jessica Calvello and Kotono Mitsuishi are both treasures.

Notable And Underrated Anime That Have Excellent English Dubs, In My Opinion - A List (With Some Extra Banter or Whatever)
The works of Shinichirō Watanabe, ranging from Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, and Carole & Tuesday (so much so that they're better off disqualified from lists likes this, due to being way too obvious choices... moving on)
FLCL (heck, would even say the same to the otherwise derivative Progressive and Alternative)
The Read or Die OVA, alongside its sequel series R.O.D the TV (so good, that even the likes of Yomiko "The Paper" Readman changing accents actually doesn't feel as jarring as I thought it would be)
Azumanga Daioh (on a side note, Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga sounds a bit like Steven Universe's Amethyst and The Owl House's Vee Noceda; can't really say why)
Lucky Star (so, which part of the Choco cornets should we eat first?)
Nichijou ('nuff said)
K-On!/K-On!! (might sound a bit jarring if one also watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica on the English dub (a bit good, but nothing compared to the Rebellion movie and maybe the compilation films; case in point, Mio Akiyama, Ritsu Tainaka, Tsumugi Kotobuki, and Azusa Nakano are Homura Akemi, Kyubey, -bloody- Hitomi Shizuki, and Madoka Kaname respectively)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan (kinda sucks that the two compilation movies don't have dubs; would have loved seeing the extra hamminess of the characters' English voices in those)
Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water - ADV (even if the occasional accents are inaccurate, the emotional delivery of the VAs is hard to deny, especially the vile Gargoyle's)
Kill la Kill (if one has witnessed it, then you know that they sure had a lot of fun playing the characters in this extremely fun gainaxy romp)
Toradora! (...basically the closest we get to seeing Madoka verbally beat down Kyubey in romance and stuff)
Ghost in the Shell, both the movie duology (1 and 2: Innocence) and Stand Alone Complex, including the Tachikomatic Days extras and the Solid State Society movie (so much so that the latter's DVDs are mostly set with the English dub on default, reportedly even in Japan)
REDLINE (can't speak enough for it so to describe its epicness)
Dead Leaves (you can actually watch it on YouTube... it might overwhelm you)
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt (telling that it's way more raunchy than even the original Japanese)
Golden Boy (you know, at least the show didn't continue on, lest it might have gotten way too weirder like the manga it's adapted from)
Black Lagoon (so good, that it resulted with the Roberta's Blood Trail OVAs having the cast reprise their roles due to fan demand)
Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemy (so madcap, the former's titular character's VA broke her voice halfway through the show)
Honorable mentions:
Neon Genesis Evangelion - particularly the ADV dub, with Manga Entertainment's efforts on The End of Evangelion and the Director's Cut versions of Episodes 21-24 (it might be correctly deemed as flawed, but nowadays, it sure has proven its worth, albeit at the cost of the Netflix dub being derided as lacking in emotion and perhaps also nuance)
The Manga Entertainment dubs for the Patlabor movie duology (a shame the OVA series preceding it doesn't share the same cast, while the Patlabor TV series dub... eludes me)
GaoGaiGar (flaw: it's unfinished, and thus never even reached the FINAL parts)
In the meantime, hopeful readers, feel free to put on personal recommendations, in case there'll be a second part, if not a commenter's edition.

the problem is that i have many, many, many verses.... but since they arent shitty ass shonen anime flavor of the month™ or some kind of popular netflix show with no cultural impact in the long run, i struggle w. even acknowledging them. like vi has a verse for The Boondocks.............. you know he'd be tryna tame riley in and failing. samurai champloo, excel saga, soul calibur, kinetica, crazy taxi, puni puni poemy, true detective............ he has it all.
