Meghalaya is blessed to receive abundant rainfall not just in Cherrapunji but almost in every throughout the state.It would be wrong to say that the state has to face acute scarcity of water. Yes, there are periods when water scarcity occurs and that is simply because there has never been any conscious effort to conserve water in the state.There is no culture of rain harvesting there. Earlier people in the state had traditional Assam type houses where bore wells were a common sight in these houses. Also one could find hot springs in abundance across the state. However, with rapid development and clusters of urban jungle coming up in place of the natural jungle the number hot springs and bore wells are also decreasing. So earlier when people faced water shortage these came in handy . But, the moot point remains that there has never been any attempt made to conserve a resource which the state is blessed to have. And add to these the common problems of afforestation, hotter climate and increasing population.Also, there are some serious issues with the water supply which is looked after by the PHE department.
