Notes on fire-stones from The Blazing-World by Margaret Cavendish

Fire-stones are found at the very bottom of the burning-mountains.

The stones burn when wet and go out when dry.

The fire-stones can’t burn diamonds.

The Empress makes a chapel lined with fire-stones where she preaches “sermons of terror to the wicked.” This is contrasted by a chapel lined with star-stones (made from a star. The Empress wanted sun-stones but it would’ve been really bad to destroy the sun) where she peaches “sermons of comfort to those that repented of their sons,”

Since the ships from the Blazing World don’t have canons, fire-stones are used as weapons instead.

The bird and fish-men hold fire-stones in the shape of torches and candles which absolutely terrify the enemy fleet because it looks like the world is on fire and judgment day has come.

The fish-men carry fire-stones in diamond cases to the enemy ships, then wet them to light them on fire. The fire spreads to where the gunpowder is stored, causing the ships to explode.

Fire-stones are laid under the foundation and on the tops of houses, so that when it rains the whole town is set on fire. The bird-men tell the townsfolk what will happen, but they only laugh at the absurdity. When rain comes and everything is on fire, the townsfolk try to put it out with water, which only feeds the blaze.

Everyone surrenders after that.
