One of the things I really love about Benjamin is his relationship to loyalty. Sure, even putting aside his attempt to expose the hoax he can be jealous, snide, and a bit of a wet blanket, but he's shown to be a very loyal person. He tried to keep Samuel from getting in trouble with Thomas, saved his notebook, ran the story in a situation where he had a lot more to lose than the Stratfords did at that point. While exposing the hoax was very much "right actions, ill intentions", I'd say that even in that, Benjamin choosing to tell Margaret directly instead of leaving her to read about it on her own was an unconventional type of loyalty-- he didn't seem to really know her personally that much, but enough that he was aware how much the stories meant to her personally and that she especially deserved to know the truth. And even when we skip ahead, in A Penny Revisited Benjamin proves to be protective of The Sentinel, even though he's in a far worse role than before and they're sinking even worse than the Sun was, he still seemed to be loyal to the paper. And we've seen how, after they repaired their friendship, Benjamin was Chester's biggest cheerleader, both in print and when it was just the two of them.

And, of course, what makes this so interesting to me is you see all these traits in Benjamin... and he also betrayed the Stratfords. He's fiercely loyal, even if he feels hard done by, but if he gets pushed to that breaking point he'll turn and turn viciously. He expects the same loyalty he gives to others to be returned, and if he feels that reciprocation isn't there (even if it's misguided, even if it's largely his own fault because he refuses to communicate) then he won't just break his loyalty, but do so bitterly.

...MAN I love this character so much.
