February was a pretty good month! I read some books I really loved (and a couple that were simply meh), I got in a father-daughter visit and had really good luck at Scrabble, the weather was mostly not awful, and even if inventory at work took longer than expected, I survived it without brain mush, which has happened before. I am still the fastest scanner! My title holds.
Regular readers will be unsurprised to learn that Eve by Cat Bohannon and Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse were my top reads of the month, or that What Feasts At Night by T. Kingfisher ranks third. My T. Kingfisher problem is at least a year old, after all. (Also I read a couple delightful picture books, so be sure to click through to find them!)
I'm personally more surprised by my lowest picks, because they both sounded so up my alley but fell flat for nearly completely different reasons. The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store ended up feeling disjointed and like it was trying for a theme it couldn't quite grasp, and A Market of Dreams and Desires hit all kinds of tropes I love, right down to random Dickens references and weird steampunk machines, but tied everything together a little too neatly for me. Ah well.
And right in the middle of my list is my sole physical TBR read of the month: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. This managed to tick off "Canadian author" and "classic" at the same time, so I get triple points. (This might have had a hand in me picking it.) Duddy has aged surprisingly well, in that it's still pretty fast-paced and amusing and also in that Richler wrote it with the understanding that scam artistry, hypermaterialism, and misogyny were bad and y'know what? They still are. I would recommend if you're looking for a Canadian teen anti-hero, more than anything. Duddy is a trainwreck and you can't look away.
I managed to get through the month with only three books hauled. (We won't talk about ARCs but the book fairies were kind.) The Unfortunate Traveller and Under a Pendulum Sun were bought during the habitual father-daughter bookstore date, and both because I never thought I'd see them and figured I might never see them again. The Unfortunate Traveller is essays and travel writing by a guy who co-wrote with Shakespeare and I didn't know it even existed. Under the Pendulum Sun was recced to me somewhere (here? bookish website algorithms?) and since it's essentially a gothic novel with properly weird fairies, it's been on my list.
The third book was a total surprise. Apparently I helped crowdfund it in 2019 and they've only just managed to get it printed and also I said I wanted a physical copy? The things we learn. Anyway, it's essays on aromanticism, agender identity, and asexuality so that tracks.
And I know I said I wasn't going to talk about ARCs but I got some good ones this last month and also in January, and there's a lot of them that are out or soon to be out and I'm having that problem where I want to be reading all of them at once. March is going to be interesting and probably a little panic-inducing.
Click through to see everything I read this month, in the rough order of how glad I was to have read them.

g'mar tov to all who observe
it feels stranger this year to live through this day, as a spaniard.
today, it is the national festivity of spain.
actually, it is the feast of something greater, of Hispanity itself, across the world. this world culture and heritage spanning europe, hispano-america (including the US), hispano-africa and hispano-asia... displays of patriotism abound, but also of divisions in each country.
hispanity's mark on the world has a lot to celebrate, but also a lot to deeply regret for many and that is something that is still hard to acknowledge and try to repair or at least ameliorate. today my heart is with the sephardim.
people in iberia are still connected to so many millions of other people, in the most palpable ways through the spanish language and the catholic faith, but also through thousands of other little things that linger in every culture. words, food, traditions, styles of living. lost keys to forgotten orchards and old prayer books left hidden. old houses in quaint towns that have living memory in faraway lands.
one of these is precisely the sephardi culture, without which spain would not be spain.
today is my first yom kippur in personal observance. for many hebrew catholics, jews and non-jews, even those with hispanic heritage, it is also a day of repentance but hopefully hispano-israeli and hispano-jewish reconciliation in general. it is more necessary than ever now when neither spain nor israel's governments (in part tainted by pro-iranian interests in the one side and kahanists in the other) are representative of the best interests and nature of the peoples.
to me, sephardi are eternally hispanic and will have a home in iberia among their own re-building communities, allies and bnei anusim of all nationalities and creeds so long as they want to call spain home. spain was your home once and should always remain so second only to the ancestral homeland itself.
i will keep praying and working for a world where my national and religious heritages no longer clash with each other nor have to be explicitly reconciled. after all, i still believe the world is big enough and we have enough goodness to make it there.
feliz día de la hispanidad, al pueblo sefardí G'mar chatima tova am yisrael chai

Puye Cliff Dwellings | The village consisted of two levels of caves cut into the cliffs and the ruins of a large pueblo on top of the mesa. There are over a dozen “stairs” from the top of the mesa to the base of the cliff. The stairs linked the Community House on top of the mesa to the dwellings at the base of the cliff, as well as to sources of water north of the pueblo.

This May marks Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. As we recommit ourselves to collective liberation and restorative learning, I wanted send out a gentle reminder that these months should not be the extent of your antiracist (un)learning (x)
1. The Korean Women’s Relief Society in Hawai’i was founded in 1919 in response to the  March First Independence Movement in Korea (that called for full independence from Imperial Japan). Along with organizing aid through the Korean Red Cross, the KWRS also organized cultural activities and events like this mock Korean wedding ceremony (1921).
2. A family of Chinese immigrants relaxes in a San Fransisco park (1980s).
3. The wives of the Philippine delegation accompany their partners to Washington D.C. campaigning for the recognition of their independence and island sovereignty; here they are received by First Lady Harding and Mme. De Veyra (1922).
4. American soldier John Konopka holds out a piece of candy to a young Korean child carried  men of the 25th infantry division relax during their advance against the Chinese communist enemy troops in Osan, Korea (1951).
5. Japanese serviceman, Neisi, poses with American Japanese women (1945).
6. Two Chinese soldiers hold the captured Japanese flag as journalist Walter G. Rundle applies first aid to a freed woman who the Japanese soldiers had forced to act as a comfort woman. Although these bondwomen were thought to have been of Chinese descent, additional research speculates that they hailed from Korea (1944).
7. Australian soldiers of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) pull together to throw a feast for the 50 displaced Korean children from Bukhansan Orphanage in Seoul. Private Alpha Cashmore Hunter and another unidentified soldier help pass out plates (+ chocolate). After dinner, a the soldiers gathered to listen to the children sing folk songs, play the piano and violin, and recite English classics (1951-53).
8. Young Japanese-Americans from the Y.W.C.A. Summer Camp in Pueblo, Colorado, many of them displaced by the Relocation Center at Granada, working alongside white local farmers (1943).
9. The champion Chinese Hose Team of America, triumphed in the great Hub-and-Hub race at Deadwood, South Dakota (1888).

Exploring the World through Cultural Travel Experiences
Tumblr media
In an increasingly connected world, travelers are seeking more meaningful ways to experience new destinations. Cultural travel experiences have emerged as a significant trend, offering a deeper understanding of the world’s diverse cultures, traditions, and histories. This article explores the importance and impact of cultural travel, highlighting key destinations and activities that provide enriching experiences.
Understanding Cultural Travel
Cultural travel is about immersing oneself in the local culture of a destination. This type of travel goes beyond sightseeing and involves engaging with the traditions, lifestyles, and histories of the people who live there. It provides a chance to learn about different ways of life and to appreciate the world’s rich cultural diversity. By choosing cultural travel, visitors contribute to preserving cultural heritage and supporting local communities.
Key Destinations for Cultural Travel
1. Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, offers an array of experiences that highlight the country’s traditional arts and customs. Visitors can participate in a tea ceremony, explore ancient temples, and attend traditional festivals like Gion Matsuri. The city’s well-preserved architecture and gardens provide a glimpse into Japan’s imperial past.
2. Cusco, Peru
As the gateway to Machu Picchu, Cusco is steeped in Incan history and Spanish colonial influence. Travelers can explore the ruins of Sacsayhuamán, visit the vibrant San Pedro market, and learn about Andean traditions and crafts. The annual Inti Raymi festival, celebrating the Incan sun god, offers a unique cultural experience.
3. Marrakech, Morocco
Marrakech is a sensory feast of colors, sounds, and scents. The city’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, where travelers can wander through bustling souks, admire intricate Moorish architecture, and savor Moroccan cuisine. Cultural tours often include visits to traditional riads and workshops with local artisans.
4. Varanasi, India
One of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, Varanasi is a spiritual hub for Hindus. Travelers can witness the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti ceremony on the banks of the Ganges River and explore the city’s labyrinthine streets. Varanasi offers a profound cultural experience that delves into India’s diverse religious practices.
5. New Orleans, Louisiana
Known for its vibrant music scene, especially jazz, and its unique Creole and Cajun cultures. Visitors can explore the French Quarter, enjoy Mardi Gras festivities, and taste authentic Southern cuisine.
6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

9. Chicago, Illinois
Renowned for its architectural tours, vibrant arts scene, and diverse cultural neighborhoods. Highlights include the Art Institute of Chicago, jazz and blues clubs, and ethnic festivals celebrating the city's heritage.
Activities to Enhance Cultural Travel
Participate in Local Workshops
Engaging in local workshops is an excellent way to learn about a destination’s crafts and traditions. Whether it’s pottery making in Mexico or Batik painting in Indonesia, these hands-on experiences provide insight into the local culture and support traditional artisans.
Attend Cultural Festivals
Festivals are vibrant expressions of a community’s culture and offer travelers a unique perspective on local traditions. Events like Holi in India, the Carnival in Brazil, and the Lantern Festival in Taiwan showcase music, dance, and rituals that are intrinsic to the community’s identity.
Stay with Local Families
Homestays provide an opportunity to live with local families and experience daily life in the community. This form of accommodation fosters cultural exchange and allows travelers to form personal connections, gaining a deeper understanding of the local way of life.
Explore Historical Sites
Visiting historical sites aids in understanding the historical context of a culture. Sites like the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum in Italy, and the pyramids of Egypt reveal the architectural feats and historical narratives of ancient civilizations.
Benefits of Cultural Travel
Cultural travel offers numerous benefits both to travelers and host communities. For travelers, it leads to personal growth, broadening perspectives and fostering empathy and understanding. For host communities, it provides economic support and helps preserve cultural heritage. Additionally, it encourages sustainable tourism practices that respect the environment and local customs.
Tips for Responsible Cultural Travel
To ensure that cultural travel is respectful and beneficial, consider the following tips:
Research: Understand the customs and traditions of the destination before visiting.
Respect: Be mindful of local customs, dress codes, and religious practices.
Support Local: Choose local guides, eat at locally-owned restaurants, and purchase handmade crafts.
Learn the Language: Even basic knowledge of the local language can enhance interactions and show respect.
Leave No Trace: Follow sustainable practices to preserve the environment and cultural sites.
Conclusion
Cultural travel experiences open the door to the world’s rich tapestry of traditions and histories. By engaging with local communities, participating in cultural activities, and respecting diverse customs, travelers can gain a more meaningful and fulfilling travel experience. Cultural travel not only enriches the traveler but also helps sustain and celebrate the diversity that makes our world unique.

Our Lady of Itati's dazzlingly beautiful face
The first Franciscan community settled in the Santa Ana area, in 1528. The reflection of the Lady of Itatí appeared three times under a rock along a river of the Paraná Basin, which led the Franciscan settlers to build a statue dedicated to the Lady of Itatí in 1589.
Then, the Jesuit missionary Luis Bolaños and the natives he had converted were saved from an Indian attack thanks to the intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Franciscans and Indians agreed on a place for the Virgin, and created the new city Pueblo de Indios de la Pura y Limpia concepción de Nuestra Señora de Itatí
A proper shrine was built to Our Lady of Itati and soon a miracle, repeated several times, surrounded the image of Our Lady: the transformations or transfigurations of her face.
The first such transformation took place on Holy Saturday 1624. Father Gamarra, the priest who celebrated mass on that day, testified: the Virgin's face looked more beautifully radiant than ever, as the priest intoned the antiphon "Regina Coeli". The father then called in the village Indians, and they all experienced the same dazzling effect: the phenomenon lasted until the Thursday after Easter, when the face returned to its normal appearance. There were at least 60 other testimonies of these dazzling transformations of the face of the Virgin of Itati, attested by witnesses and recorded in the annals of the sanctuary.
Our Lady of Itati was crowned on July 16, 1900, by special permission from Pope Leo XIII. And in 1910, Our Lady of Itati became the patron saint of the newly-created diocese of Corrientes. Today, Itati has a magnificent basilica, built in 1938. Poor pilgrims from far and wide flock there, often on foot, filially and simply devoted to the Mother of Heaven. The feast of Our Lady of Itati is celebrated on July 9.
