Feast Day: July 15 (New), July 14 (Trad)
Patronage: Intestinal disorders, Bagnoregio, Italy, Conchita Indian Pueblo, St. Bonaventure University, NYC
Saint Bonaventure was a Franciscan, theologian, philosopher, teacher, writer, cardinal and mystic, lovingly called the ”Seraphic Doctor.” He was close friends with St. Thomas Aquinas and King St. Louis IX. He’s considered the second founder of the Franciscans and spoke at the Council of Lyons. In wisdom and humility, he united the pastoral and practical aspects of life with the doctrines of the Church. Bonaventure died of natural causes.

February was a pretty good month! I read some books I really loved (and a couple that were simply meh), I got in a father-daughter visit and had really good luck at Scrabble, the weather was mostly not awful, and even if inventory at work took longer than expected, I survived it without brain mush, which has happened before. I am still the fastest scanner! My title holds.
Regular readers will be unsurprised to learn that Eve by Cat Bohannon and Mirrored Heavens by Rebecca Roanhorse were my top reads of the month, or that What Feasts At Night by T. Kingfisher ranks third. My T. Kingfisher problem is at least a year old, after all. (Also I read a couple delightful picture books, so be sure to click through to find them!)
I'm personally more surprised by my lowest picks, because they both sounded so up my alley but fell flat for nearly completely different reasons. The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store ended up feeling disjointed and like it was trying for a theme it couldn't quite grasp, and A Market of Dreams and Desires hit all kinds of tropes I love, right down to random Dickens references and weird steampunk machines, but tied everything together a little too neatly for me. Ah well.
And right in the middle of my list is my sole physical TBR read of the month: The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. This managed to tick off "Canadian author" and "classic" at the same time, so I get triple points. (This might have had a hand in me picking it.) Duddy has aged surprisingly well, in that it's still pretty fast-paced and amusing and also in that Richler wrote it with the understanding that scam artistry, hypermaterialism, and misogyny were bad and y'know what? They still are. I would recommend if you're looking for a Canadian teen anti-hero, more than anything. Duddy is a trainwreck and you can't look away.
I managed to get through the month with only three books hauled. (We won't talk about ARCs but the book fairies were kind.) The Unfortunate Traveller and Under a Pendulum Sun were bought during the habitual father-daughter bookstore date, and both because I never thought I'd see them and figured I might never see them again. The Unfortunate Traveller is essays and travel writing by a guy who co-wrote with Shakespeare and I didn't know it even existed. Under the Pendulum Sun was recced to me somewhere (here? bookish website algorithms?) and since it's essentially a gothic novel with properly weird fairies, it's been on my list.
The third book was a total surprise. Apparently I helped crowdfund it in 2019 and they've only just managed to get it printed and also I said I wanted a physical copy? The things we learn. Anyway, it's essays on aromanticism, agender identity, and asexuality so that tracks.
And I know I said I wasn't going to talk about ARCs but I got some good ones this last month and also in January, and there's a lot of them that are out or soon to be out and I'm having that problem where I want to be reading all of them at once. March is going to be interesting and probably a little panic-inducing.

g'mar tov to all who observe
it feels stranger this year to live through this day, as a spaniard.
today, it is the national festivity of spain.
actually, it is the feast of something greater, of Hispanity itself, across the world. this world culture and heritage spanning europe, hispano-america (including the US), hispano-africa and hispano-asia... displays of patriotism abound, but also of divisions in each country.
hispanity's mark on the world has a lot to celebrate, but also a lot to deeply regret for many and that is something that is still hard to acknowledge and try to repair or at least ameliorate. today my heart is with the sephardim.
people in iberia are still connected to so many millions of other people, in the most palpable ways through the spanish language and the catholic faith, but also through thousands of other little things that linger in every culture. words, food, traditions, styles of living. lost keys to forgotten orchards and old prayer books left hidden. old houses in quaint towns that have living memory in faraway lands.
one of these is precisely the sephardi culture, without which spain would not be spain.
today is my first yom kippur in personal observance. for many hebrew catholics, jews and non-jews, even those with hispanic heritage, it is also a day of repentance but hopefully hispano-israeli and hispano-jewish reconciliation in general. it is more necessary than ever now when neither spain nor israel's governments (in part tainted by pro-iranian interests in the one side and kahanists in the other) are representative of the best interests and nature of the peoples.
to me, sephardi are eternally hispanic and will have a home in iberia among their own re-building communities, allies and bnei anusim of all nationalities and creeds so long as they want to call spain home. spain was your home once and should always remain so second only to the ancestral homeland itself.
i will keep praying and working for a world where my national and religious heritages no longer clash with each other nor have to be explicitly reconciled. after all, i still believe the world is big enough and we have enough goodness to make it there.

Puye Cliff Dwellings | The village consisted of two levels of caves cut into the cliffs and the ruins of a large pueblo on top of the mesa. There are over a dozen “stairs” from the top of the mesa to the base of the cliff. The stairs linked the Community House on top of the mesa to the dwellings at the base of the cliff, as well as to sources of water north of the pueblo.

This May marks Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. As we recommit ourselves to collective liberation and restorative learning, I wanted send out a gentle reminder that these months should not be the extent of your antiracist (un)learning (x)

Life is weird, I was invited into a family’s home to share a (delicious!!!) meal with them at the Kewa Pueblo feast day today… and this event is a direct result of my mom recently starting to obsessively play Pokémon Go with me
#it was a billion degrees and I think I got significantly dehydrated for the second time this weekend#(the first time was yesterday. playing… pokemon go)#basically how this worked is we play often in an area of town we otherwise don’t visit often#we found a jewelry vendor there one day while playing and bought some of her pieces#and we see her there almost every time we play now#she invited us to eat with her family today and to enjoy her air conditioner#it was *amazing* and they sent us home with a loaf of homemade bread 😭#so uhhhhh thank you pokemon???

Saint Bonaventure was a Franciscan, theologian, philosopher, teacher, writer, cardinal and mystic, lovingly called the ”Seraphic Doctor.” He was close friends with St. Thomas Aquinas and King St. Louis IX. He’s considered the second founder of the Franciscans and spoke at the Council of Lyons. In wisdom and humility, he united the pastoral and practical aspects of life with the doctrines of the Church. Bonaventure died of natural causes.

Our Lady of Itati's dazzlingly beautiful face
The first Franciscan community settled in the Santa Ana area, in 1528. The reflection of the Lady of Itatí appeared three times under a rock along a river of the Paraná Basin, which led the Franciscan settlers to build a statue dedicated to the Lady of Itatí in 1589.
Then, the Jesuit missionary Luis Bolaños and the natives he had converted were saved from an Indian attack thanks to the intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Franciscans and Indians agreed on a place for the Virgin, and created the new city Pueblo de Indios de la Pura y Limpia concepción de Nuestra Señora de Itatí
A proper shrine was built to Our Lady of Itati and soon a miracle, repeated several times, surrounded the image of Our Lady: the transformations or transfigurations of her face.
The first such transformation took place on Holy Saturday 1624. Father Gamarra, the priest who celebrated mass on that day, testified: the Virgin's face looked more beautifully radiant than ever, as the priest intoned the antiphon "Regina Coeli". The father then called in the village Indians, and they all experienced the same dazzling effect: the phenomenon lasted until the Thursday after Easter, when the face returned to its normal appearance. There were at least 60 other testimonies of these dazzling transformations of the face of the Virgin of Itati, attested by witnesses and recorded in the annals of the sanctuary.
Our Lady of Itati was crowned on July 16, 1900, by special permission from Pope Leo XIII. And in 1910, Our Lady of Itati became the patron saint of the newly-created diocese of Corrientes. Today, Itati has a magnificent basilica, built in 1938. Poor pilgrims from far and wide flock there, often on foot, filially and simply devoted to the Mother of Heaven. The feast of Our Lady of Itati is celebrated on July 9.
