hi i know it can be a pain in the ass for citations, but the reason the APA standard for bylines is initial comma surname is because of a trial where female scientists submitted articles to journals under their full names, got rejected, submitted the same articles with just initials to the same journals, were published, and then published their summarized results
that makes a lot of sense for submissions and the publication process, but it does also lead to the very awkward scenario where the professor gives students an article including just the first initial of the author and then the students proceed to conduct their presentations and discussions on the article and cite it in their own writing using he/him for a female scholar, because the automatic assumption is still that an academic is male unless otherwise specified. and then that assumption that becomes self-perpetuating since students get the impression that the field is even more male-dominated than it actually is. but then again, does assuming the author is male also mean the article gets engaged with more seriously even after it's published? idk. pros and cons either way, and the dynamic probably varies a lot depending on field and subfield and the topic of the publication, among other things.

if you want to look at what birds are in your area for birdwatching, try using Merlin BirdID and eBird. Both apps are from Cornell's bird center and are like irl pokedex for birbs. inaturalist and its companion app Seek are also useful for animal/plant/fungi ID. enjoy your irl pokedexes.

Photo of the back for @queersicles, @puddlebrigade, and anyone else who would find it helpful!
I also added this photo to the ko-fi listing here.
CRAB CRAB CRAB
This was my first time working with leather because I got a burning desire for a bag shaped like a horseshoe crab. It has two zippered compartments, and an adjustable strap so it can be worn at my side as a cross-body bag or on my back more like a backpack.

fyi if you're painting wood, you may benefit from trying out different gesso formulations. i'm certain there are gesso that are good for painting on wood bc oil on wood panels has been around longer than canvas. i would start by testing an egg tempera base really, since once egg tempera is dry, it's functionally unremovable
@puddlebrigade
Great idea, thank you so much. I just threw down some spray mod podge before painting like I normally would for things like pine, but so.much.grain. Thanks for the advice!!

As an acquisitions librarian, I’ve always had access to a plethora of books. I’d go thru phases, and one of my most fascinating was the “nun phase.” I found it so interesting to read what it was like, and many times I was very surprised. So, come along with me today and explore this abandoned 200 yr. nunnery and former care house in the UK.
So, it’s got Gothic vibes.
I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be into a huge community living room.
I wonder if this was the refectory- what they call the dining room in a convent.
Nope.
I’m not a thief, but I think this would’ve gone home with me.
Wow, the rehab room looks like a torture chamber. We can thank Puddlebrigade for identifying everything- The torture chamber is actually the playing chamber for carillon bells. There is a second picture of the keys.
Of course, a nunnery has to have stained glass windows.
So, I think we’ve entered the church part.
Another device I don’t recognize. Puddlebrigade: That’s a stair lift without a seat on it
I would say that a statue stood here.
I searched this on Google Lens and it translates as “Closure.”
Corridor.
Wow, what is this? So then, these would be the keys for the carillon.
All the bathrooms seem to be single- inconvenient for a group home.
Cool architectural salvage piece.
I have no idea what that is. Puddlebrigade: That’s a manual hospital bed or gurney, you can see the foot pedal to lift the mattress.
This is nice.
The entrance in the dark.

Friendly reminder that Christian Bale voices howl in howls moving castle, making this the second time that a Batman has voiced a studio Ghibli main character. (comment courtesy of @puddlebrigade)
.
Fact check: There's a version of the post going around saying that RPatz wasn't scouted for the role when the section of the article directly above the screenshot contradicts that?
.
Image description below the cut
[Image ID and source: Tweet by Friday Ivy | daytez loving hours 24/7 (@/ivyfriday) reading:
voice director: robert pattinson as a guy to voice a strange old man disguising himself as a crane? uhh. unsure robert pattinson, vibrating excitedly on five atomic levels: I MADE RECORDINGS OF MY SUPER AWESOME OLD MAN VOICE WANNA HEAR voice director: oh. oh my god
Below is a screenshot of the following passage from the article linked above (text: source)
In fact, Pattinson was so excited about the role that he showed up to his first recording session in Los Angeles ready to prove that he was the right person to do it. Voice director Michael Sinterniklaas initially had his doubts (“When Pattinson’s name came up,” Sinterniklaas said, “I thought he’s a fine actor but there was nothing in his body of work to indicate that he could do this crazy thing”), but Pattinson was quick to dispel them. “When he came to our studio in L.A.,” Sinterniklaas said, “he was like ‘OK, I’ve been thinking about this role and I recorded some stuff. Do you want to hear it?’ And he whips out his iPhone and plays some stuff that he’s just been doing in the Memos app and it was already the voice. I was like, ‘Oh, bingo, you’ve already got the character.”
/end ID]
“Robert Pattinson showed up with iPhone voice recordings and had already nailed the voice for ‘THE BOY AND THE HERON’ before recording started. It was his first ever voice role and he finished in 2 days.” (source)

Can I ask the context of the mala beads on everyone’s desks in that recent video? Is the guy with the apple watch doing a digital version?
Referencing this video
The thing on the apple watch is a digital 木鱼/muyu/"wooden fish". It is a wooden block that is used during Buddhist prayer/chanting, especially in East Asian countries. The bracelets are honestly probably on everyone's desks because one person brought one so everyone had to bring theirs (kids, right).
I don't think they really count as mala beads but the purpose is largely the same, that is, to focus while running the beads through your hand. In Chinese, the action is called 盘(手)串, "coiling/checking over the bracelet".
Beaded bracelets like this are also just a type of 把件/bajian ("holding/grasping item"). The purpose of these items is not necessarily religious or spiritual, they are just supposed to be held or touched for the purpose of relaxation and comfort. You can see this video has a few. People who like to drink tea and collect tea pets and all those doodads also generally like to collect bajians, I find.
Edit: tldr the kids are probably using the bracelets like good luck fidget spinners

@puddlebrigade Okay the tables have been moved and reduced to be more accessible and some planters have been moved
My ideal street layout, wide sidewalk, wide bike lanes, and a 2 lane road that only allows streetcars on it. Yes I know this a bad drawing, I made it in a hurry

@puddlebrigade I have all 5 and more, and hell hounds always at my side. Do not let their diminutive size and supreme fluffiness fool you. They a vicious, vicious beings.
I know for a fact you possess all five. You’re the only person I know of with all five?
…maybe I should start giving all my friends swords…
I do! And I have so many more than two swords...

Yeah this is the first time I've had to do this so basically the thing is that every single heat she goes into a false pregnancy and her symptoms are pretty severe (I knew about this ahead of time because her mom is exactly the same) but they've never done more than make her Sad And Depressed Because No Puppies for about a week. However she does normally get pretty booby after a heat so when her mmamaries got gigantic I thought ok typical.
Except. They didn't stop. So the past couple days I've been like man that just seems excessive even for Fae. And today I flipped her over (she hates being held on her back) and they were just huge and hard and lumpy and I was like fuck she has mammary cancer mastitis burst hernia etc etc and so I sent a video to a breeder friend who went "blocked duct, she's lactating and it's not letting down" and told me how to fix it and-
Well the good news is the second I started massaging and the milk started flowing she stopped fighting me and fully relaxed in my arms, and I got enough out that her mammaries are pretty deflated now instead of being hard and swollen.
I'd already decided to spay her due to the severity of her false pregnancies as well as to repair her inguinal hernia but now I'm glad that I scheduled it because boy I do NOT want to milk her again every 6 months.
Fae's so deep into a false pregnancy that she's lactating, except she's never actually been bred so I just had to manually manipulate her mammaries and get her to let her milk down and then help her express
And I have never been gladder to have a spay date for the both of them in August 🙄
