Le Fosse Ardeatine sono un sito a Roma, in Italia, dove è stato effettuato un massacro di civili dalle forze di occupazione tedesche durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Il 24 marzo 1944, in risposta a un attacco partigiano, i tedeschi radunarono e giustiziarono 335 uomini e ragazzi, per lo più ebrei italiani e prigionieri politici, alle Fosse Ardeatine, una serie di grotte fuori Roma. La strage fu un brutale atto di rappresaglia e suscitò sdegno e orrore sia in Italia che nel mondo. Dopo la guerra, il sito è stato trasformato in un memoriale per le vittime e un luogo di pellegrinaggio e ricordo. Oggi le Fosse Ardeatine sono un importante simbolo delle atrocità commesse durante la guerra e servono a ricordare l'importanza della pace, della giustizia e dei diritti umani. Cicely Tyson is indelibly etched into our African-American cultural compass. As one of the most significant Black actresses during her ninety-six years, she established a moral compass: she became the standard bearer, raising her bar to the highest level of excellence, and exceptionalism and brilliance. She refused to cave in to the Hollywood system, and said she would rather “starve” than accept demeaning, stereotypical roles.  At every moment, in her existence, she was a proud lady; she demanded respect and she treated everyone with respect.

"What does Cicely Tyson want to be remembered as?... she said with great clarity, she wished to be remembered by these words. 'I done my best.'

Cicely Tyson was better than best. She was the Best. She shall endure through the ages."

I got caught red handed. For taking the vid, not the candy :)) The pile of candy is entitled "Portrait of Ross", an art piece by Felix Gonzalez-Torres created in memory of his partner Ross Laycock, who died from AIDS in 1991. I actually knew Ross, dated him a few times when I first moved to NYC in the early 80's. I had no idea he passed away or that this piece existed until I happened upon it yesterday at the Met Breur. The pile of candy is 175 lbs, Ross' ideal weight. Viewers of the work are encouraged to take a piece of candy. Each and every day, the remaining candy is removed, weighed, and more is added until it weighs exactly 175 pounds.
