i guess it's time to share one of my favorite websites again. cactusinhabitat is a gallery of mostly Central and South American cacti, photographed in-situ. Many of these species are cultivated as ornamentals/houseplants in the West, and are well-studied in that context, but details about their life history in their native range are hard to find... to say nothing of pictures!

I think it's fun how the world opens up when you see pictures of these plants in the wild. what might have once seemed strange and 'exotic' becomes normal :) compare and contrast:

Pterocactus valentinii - A caudiciform cactus. Another cactus I got at the Missouri Botanical Gardens. I've read tha P. valentinii propagates when wind and rains break off branches and they re-root elsewhere, eventually forming their own caudex. The spines on this one come off and stick you very easily, similar to Opuntia's.
