This Friday, January 18, I get to spin an all 7-inch set in one of my favorite bars in Jersey City, PS Wine Bar (93 Newark Ave) from 9PM to closing. Some time in 2016 D.J. Prestige played me “Bug Juice,” by the Du-Rites and I went into full on freak-out mode. What do you mean it is already sold out?! Only 100 pressed?! I emailed drummer extraordinaire, J-Zone, and was able to secure one of his last remaining copies. THANK YOU! Needless to say, I have not missed a release since. My freak-out was because i could sense that these guys get “it.” While the majority of the modern Soul & Funk scene wastes everyone’s time with boring ballads or cover versions that add NOTHING new to the original, the Du-Rites get down and dirtier. This 7-inch, and the LP which followed, celebrated the iconic sounds heard in 60’s and 70’s cop shows. We would watch these shows and be blown away by the themes and incidental music... and apparently so were the Du-Rites. MEAN MACHINE! MEAN MACHINE! Friday’s set will be the usual eclectic mix of Funk, Soul, R&B, Instrumentals, Jazz, Latin, Dub, 70’s Punk Rock, 80’s and 90’s stuff and on and on. Come by and hear this and many more. This Friday, January 18, I get to spin an all 7-inch set in one of my favorite bars in Jersey City, PS Wine Bar (93 Newark Ave) from 9PM to closing. I remember at one point realizing that you can never actually own all the records you want. Of course you need to LOVE all the records you have and NEVER stop learning about new stuff, but that realization was a tough one. Can are a German band so finding their records in the states is not always an easy one. About a year ago I was fortunate enough to get a British only 12” of “Turtles Have a Short Legs,” from the collection of Wm. Berger. This past April while DJing a set for 420 at PS Wine Bar a patron expressed his disappointment that it was not a 7-inch. I never said that set, peppered with drug references, was going to be all 7-inches. I also thought, “Do you actually have or have ever seen this on 7-inch?” Pretty sure the answer would have been no. Let’s just say I hope that guy comes back. I got one of my favorite mother-fucking songs of all time on a mother-fucking 7-inch…can I get a, "Halleluwah!" The Jimmy Castor Bunch - “It’s Just Begun” b/w “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” (Kinetic cat. ZS7 6001 For Demonstration Use Only / Not For Sale / With Insert)) Imagine there is a particular record on your want list and when you find it, it is a different version. One, you have never seen before, one I don’t think many people know exists. This “promo” copy comes with an insert. I have to assume it is a promo by sticker only and were distributed as a promo packages…including an insert! So of course, if you have a copy of the 7-inch, and don’t have the insert, you need to upgrade… thought you were a fan? CRAZY! “It’s Just Begun,” was one of the “records” (8-Tracks) in constant rotation in the family car growing up so to finally get a copy of this 7-inch means so much to me. The single version is slower, heavier, and more raw than the LP track and all of that makes me happy. The song bursts open with horns blasting and then everyone hangs in the air for a moment before dropping in, in perfect sync. The drum part is an exercise in precision with the perfectly timed high-hat hits that keep everyone focused. The bass is so heavy it rattles your skeleton and it never lets you lose the groove. Castor rips, and screams, through a solo followed by the same treatment on the guitar. The song is a monster and this unplayed copy sounds AMAZING! Throw down your cardboard and break down to the basement, a.k.a P.S.
