Looking for floppy disks meant pulling a bunch of things off shelves and in my house that meant a pile of retro tech. So I've dusted things off, taken some photos and written up posts. Those are queued for the next week or so but here's some extra bits and pieces for fun.
Tumblr media
To start, my very first keyboard, a Yamaha Portasound PSS-170 I've had almost my whole life. These came out in 1986, there's a good chance my parents bought it on sale a few years later.
It's been heavily used by three feral children (myself and my sisters), dragged all around Australia for almost forty years, I even played it in at least one band. It has taken more abuse than just about any piece of technology I've seen and still works flawlessly. Beautiful.
Funnily enough, this keyboard does fit my retro home computing theme. It uses a cutdown version of the OPL2, the FM synthesis sound chip found in the Sound Blaster and Ad Lib sound cards.
Tumblr media
Moving on, here's a weird calculator from 1977 with a VFD display. Its so chunky but I forgot to get a photo showing off how thick it is. Never found out much about this one, I just think it's pretty.
Tumblr media
Last for now, a portable TV from the '80s that may be broken. Unfortunately there's no VHF or UHF broadcasts near me so I don't know it's faulty or there's just no signal to display. It scans but never stops. I originally got this to act as a mini screen for my Commodore 64 but haven't had any luck yet.

Yamaha PSS-170
This is a very cute demo of some tunes on the yamaha pss-170.
when i was 9, my mom bought this for the family after we had to give up our piano during a major cross-country move.
the keybed had really tiny keys and it was murder to play on this after so many years with actual pianos. trying to take it out of the house was also painful as it required 8 C-sized batteries, which cost a small fortune, and didn't last more than 4 hours tops even with that much power.
one of the things i liked about it was the preset drum sequences; the swing one had a nice tss tss-tss on the triangle that i loved, even though as a classical piano student i had no idea how to take advantage of it. also, for a small and mostly impractical instrument, every voice was pitch-matched and could be trusted to always be in-key when switching voices. this was something i did not appreciate enough back in the day.
last, the major demo song that came with the keyboard (see 5:50 in the video) was pretty nice and cycled through some instrument choices as it played. usually it would land on some sane ones, but every now and then it would land on wave (voice 99?) or one of the other arcane ones and me and my siblings were always entertained by hearing it struggle to sound sane through those sequences until the next voice switch.

Pazuzu. In Assyrian and Babylonian mythology, PAZUZU (sometimes Fazuzu or Pazuza) was the king of the demons of the wind, brother of Humbaba and son of the god Hanbi. He also represented the southwestern wind, the bearer of storms and drought. Concerning Pazuzu’s name itself, Dutch assyriologist Franciscus A. M. Wiggermann offers two possible solutions. The  first, Neo-Assyrian PN Pa-zu-zu, occurs once in a text from Tall Halaf, and is explained as deriving either from Aramaic pezôzā, “made of fine gold,” or from Aramaic PZZ, “to be impetuous, agile.” The latter of this class of derivations fits Pazuzu’s character exceptionally well. Whether the Neo-Assyrian names Ba-su-su and Ba-zu-zu reflect the same meaning for the same entity cannot be known. The second potential solution is a bit more tenuous. Pasusu would be derived from PSS, an unattested secondary variant of PSH, known in Babylonian from the word pessû — “halt” or “dwarf.” This would place Pasusu in the class of apotropaic dwarfs attested both in Mesopotamian and Egyptian religion and iconography. In fact, on one well-made Lamaštu amulet, Pazuzu has remarkably short legs, and in an inscription calls Himself ú-GU-u, or “cripple.” Wiggermann tells us that Pazuzu’s name is not attested before the Iron Age (1200 – 550 BCE), though “the bilingual [Sumero-Akkadian] incantations can be taken to point to an earlier date, as well as perhaps His appearance in an alamdimmû omen.” As for specific, reasonable dates and alternative sources, the German assyriologist Nils P. Heeßel tells us that “the earliest securely datable Pazuzu representations stem from the royal tombs in Kalhu (Nimrud), which can be dated to the end of the 8th century BCE, while the earliest reference to Pazuzu in texts is found in a letter dated to around 670 BCE.” (2011) Pazuzu is known from over 170 iconographic representations stemming from the Tigris-Euphrates river system and beyond during the 1st millennium BCE, from the Late Babylonian and Neo-Assyrian (circa 1000 – 609 BCE) and Neo-Babylonian (circa 626 – 539 BCE) periods.

New Open Applications Advance Comprehensive Modeling Environment for Multidiscipline Collaboration
LONDON — The Year in Infrastructure 2018 Conference – Bentley Systems, Incorporated, the leading global provider of comprehensive software solutions for advancing the design, construction, and operations of infrastructure, today launched OpenSite Designer, a built-for-purpose application for the design and construction of civil site projects. It also launched OpenBuildings, bringing together its AECOsim building design and Speedikon factory and industrial design applications; and announced the availability of OpenBuildings Station Designer, a specialized application for designing rail and metro stations. At the same time, Bentley announced the availability of OpenBridge Designer, which combines Bentley’s bridge modeling, analysis and design capabilities into one comprehensive package, and OpenFlows FLOOD, a flood analysis and early warning system.
In addition, in pursuit of its ‘industrialization’ strategy, Bentley announced it has rebranded under its Open portfolio several of its applications based on MicroStation technology which collectively accelerate the advancement of its comprehensive modeling environment by connecting digital workflows across disciplines and sharing digital components in its Connected Data Environment (CDE).
Bhupinder Singh, chief product officer, Bentley Systems, said, “Open has three meanings. First, it signifies open to multiple disciplines. Second, it means open to analysis and simulation. Using different applications, two different disciplines, for example, a geotechnical engineer and a structural engineer, can iterate on the same dataset in our comprehensive modeling environment, providing a ‘digital feedback loop’ and enhancing their collaboration across BIM workflows. And third, because MicroStation technology underpins Open applications, users can produce multidiscipline deliverables and accomplish multidiscipline clash resolution from any Open application. Bentley’s comprehensive modeling environment is ‘Open’ for collaborative digital workflows.”
Fully 49 of the 62 finalists and awardees of this year’s Year in Infrastructure Awards credited collaborative digital workflows in their successful outcomes. For example, OpenRoads, Bentley’s civil design applications for road networks, is credited by 22 awards finalists’ projects in 12 categories, and OpenPlant, Bentley’s plant design project management applications, is credited by 10 finalists’ projects in 9 different categories. ProjectWise and/or AssetWise were credited by finalists’ projects in 16 of 19 awards categories this year.
OpenSite Designer
The collaborative nature of digital workflows connecting analysis and simulation with design and modeling is exemplified in OpenSite, Bentley’s new solution for the design and construction of civil site projects. OpenSite provides rapid site modeling and analysis, earthwork optimization and quantification, drainage and underground utilities, and automated project deliverables.
OpenSite Designer provides the most comprehensive site design workflow available including reality modeling, geotechnical, underground utilities, stormwater drainage, terrain modeling, detailed drawing production, and visualization. OpenSite Designer optimizes design outcomes with multidiscipline information modeling and analysis. Interoperating with PLAXIS, Bentley’s newly acquired geotechnical engineering solution, site plans can be enhanced with new information about the active properties of soil including bearing capacity, stresses, and displacement.
OpenBuildings Designer
The newly launched OpenBuildings Designer incorporates all of the capabilities of AECOsim Building Designer as well as Components Center and a range of new capabilities and standards including EnergyPlus, a building energy model to help users comply with ASHRAE standards in the US, and UK energy requirements; support of international standards including IFC 2×3, IFC4 Reference View, COBie, and Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority; new capabilities to design curtain wall systems; and OpenBuildings Speedikon, a leading application for industrialized design and construction. OpenBuildings Designer takes advantage of collaborative digital workflows with other applications in Bentley’s Open portfolio, for example templates in OpenBuildings Station Designer for tunnel segments created through GenerativeComponents based on linear alignment from OpenRail. Showcasing their robustness and versatility, OpenBuildings applications were credited by 32 of 62 of the Year in Infrastructure Awards finalists projects in 15 of 19 categories.
OpenBridge Designer
OpenBridge Designer is a new, all-encompassing application that integrates the modeling capabilities of OpenBridge Modeler and the analysis and design features of RM Bridge, LEAP Bridge Concrete, and LEAP Bridge Steel to meet the design and construction needs of both concrete and steel bridges. OpenBridge Designer enables bridge designers to rapidly create an intelligent, parametric bridge model, fully integrated with analysis and design, as well as drawings. It enables seamless synchronization of various disciplines for analysis, design, detailing, documentation, construction engineering and load-rating.
OpenFlows FLOOD
Bentley also announced the rebranding of its Haestad water modeling and ACTION Modulers flood analysis product lines to form OpenFlows for water districts, sewer utilities and flood plain managers. OpenFlows extends smart water networks capabilities with GIS-based asset-centric information for water loss reduction, water operations, flood prediction and prevention. OpenFlows FLOOD continuously monitors watersheds, integrating data from real-time monitoring stations and numerical models to calculate risk levels. OpenFlows FLOOD mitigates flood risk, improving understanding of the processes involved in flood generation, and transmitting early alerts to reduce the impact caused by floods.
Connecting Digital Workflows Across Disciplines
Applications for analysis and simulation, on the one hand, can collaboratively and iteratively work with applications for design and modeling, and on the other, connect operational workflows and converge the work of different disciplines. Collaborative digital workflows are characterized by data captured or created for one purpose being accessed and used by other applications for other purposes thereby saving time, minimizing rework, and improving data quality over the asset lifecycle.
An example of multidiscipline collaboration with OpenFlows involves workflows that use ContextCapture to create a 3D reality mesh, feeding into OpenFlows FLOOD modeling and using the terrain as input to various analyses in a single review environment for visualization and presentation to stakeholders using LumenRT.
Connecting analysis with modeling in another Open collaborative digital workflow involves the layout of road geometry, and hydraulic analysis and design using storm analysis tools including the determination of the size of storm inlets, pipes, depth of pipes, and manholes. The collaborative nature of the workflow enables clash detection in the subsurface environment, and iteration and adjustment as needed, to confirm functional and physical characteristics.
Other instances of Open collaborative digital workflows connecting design and analysis include OpenUtilities with Siemens’ PSS©SINCAL, which helps utilities improve resilience and deal with weak spots in the grid; and OpenBuildings Station Designer with LEGION pedestrian simulation, to enable designers to design, test, and validate simulations of scenarios for pedestrian traffic.
Rebranding
Completing its announcement about Open applications, Bentley said that Bentley Map will be rebranded as OpenCities Map; and OpenComms, aimed primarily at multisystem operators, will incorporate Bentley Fiber and Bentley Coax.

When it comes to simplistic watches, we have to put our hands up and say, Scandinavia are the masters at it. We’ve had many simplistic watches come through at New labels Only and many from Scandinavia. We’ve had Cate & Nelson watches, TID Watches and Larsen & Eriksen watches. Now we have another addition and it is Nordgreen Watches.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Nordgreen Watches Beginning
Nordgreen Watches was founded in January 2017 by Vasilij Brandt and Pascar Sivam in Copenhagen, Denmark. Both born and bred in Denmark, they wanted to create a watch brand inspired by traditional Scandinavian design, while incorporating the core Scandinavian values of generosity and social responsibility.
So they did. End of story! (Not quite)
They were joined by Jakob Wagner, one of the leading Scandinavian designers who actually designed DrägerMan PSS 500 Air Unit for firefighters and who also worked with  Bang & Olufsen, Hay, Muuto, and many more brands. With his eye for design, this partnership flourished and three watches designs were completed August 2017.
After a couple of tests on the prototypes, they took Nordgreen Watches to the public on Kickstarter. As you’d expect they obliterated their target and raised 1495% of their goal which is kr1,495,496, approximately $240,000 / £177,000.
Now they have open their watches to the public on their own website and we have been able to get our hands on a Nordgreen Watches, Philosopher – Rose Gold Mesh in 36mm.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Nordgreen Watches Unboxing
“The Nordgreen Watches Rose Gold Philosopher is designed to celebrate our ability to think differently, learn from the past, act now, and create a better future.”
The Three Reasons
Scandinavian Design
First let’s talk about the dial of the watch. It is very simple. The index is marked with rose gold bar at each 5 minutes increment and black bars in between. The dial is very appealing as the white background, the rose gold bar and black little bars complement each other and create a very attractive dial. To further enhance the look of the watch and to keep its minimalistic look, the minute and hour hands have a baton design and both are in rose gold. The second-hand however is slightly darker, in a grey colour, and has an asymmetric design. On the 3 O’clock position, you have a little date window which it visible but does not take too much space on the dial and you have Nordgreen Watches’ logo at the 12 O’clock position in black to break away from the rose gold accent colour.
When looking at the watch, you may think that there is nothing special about the dial’s design, but there are little details which you may miss out. The asymmetric second-hand is different to the baton minute and hour hands for a reason and that is to create the appearance that the second-hand is continuously slicing through time. Very interesting!
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The case size is 36mm with a thickness of 7.2mm. In terms of fitting, the size is perfect for a small wrist, as it sit well and the thickness does not make the watch stick out. However if you have a larger wrist, this may be a little to small for you. Now let’s refer back to the design and there is a reason why Jakob Wagner is a world-renowned designer. The case has a conical-shaped case with a wider base than the face. By having these two different size, your eyes are drawn to the centre of the timepiece and makes the dial stand out. The base of the watch is also slightly elevated to bring the dial a closer and also to show off the design of the two piece dial.
The rose gold mesh straps are interchangeable with the quick release pins and tugging lugs. In terms of comfort, the mesh straps have been well made with the gaps within the mesh at bare minimal, so you do not need to worry about your arm hair getting stuck. The buckle is more of a square shape rather than a wide rectangular shape and it really goes well with the strap.
The crown is another stunning piece of design by Jakob. The crown has a dented edge and is signed with Nordgreen Watches logo. The crown sticks out from the dial to make sure that you notice it and it also adds o the unique design of the watch.
Philospher makes it one to keep hold of for the grand-children.
Giving Back
Giving back is part of the culture at Nordgreen Watches. Inspired by social responsibility and other Danish values, Nordgreen Watches want to give back and they have partnered with three NGO’s. The best part is that you can decide which NGO you want to donate to.
Water for Good: For every purchase, you will give two months of clean water to one person in the The Central African Republic.
Cool Earth: When you purchase a watch, you will preserve 200 sqm of rain forest in Latin America.
Pratham UK: Pratham is India’s largest education NGO, seeking to improve the quality of education and learning levels across India. When you buy a watch, you will give two months of education to a child in India.
Affordable Price
We think that there is no point of designing a stunning piece of watch and charging a price which most people will not be able to afford. So Nordgreen is not!
The Philosopher – Rose Gold Mesh in 36mm costs $230/ £170/ €192. With 2 year warranty included, free shipping along with its stunning design, we think this is a fair price.
Any Improvement
There is one improvement which can be made and that is to add a 40mm to their watch collection for the Philosopher – Rose Gold Mesh in 36mm. This is because the 36mm will get lost on a larger sized wrist.
This was our review of Nordgreen Watches, Philosopher – Rose Gold Mesh in 36mm and we would love to know your thoughts on the watch. Do let us know in the comment below
If you would like to know more about Nordgreen Watches and explore their collection do visit their website.
