Basically, after Alex’s sprint on Saturday, James and Alex had this interaction over the radio:

Obviously, fans were like “What does this mean?” Well, in the latest Vowles Verdict, someone asked about it.

According to James, Alex walked by him Saturday morning with a coffee. James likes to know how people take their coffee, so he asked about it, and Alex apparently was very enthusiastic about his Pumpkin Spice Latte that he had his own recipe for.

So the radio after the sprint was a callback to that. But, the story continues because on Sunday, James got his side of the garage all PSLs the way Alex makes them for good luck (and obviously it worked 😉). James said that he wouldn’t have another one, though, even for points 😂.

Pakistan Super League Severely Hit, Several Overseas Stars Pull Out Ahead Of New Season

Several high-profile international cricketers have pulled out of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to the overlapping of dates with other franchise-based tournaments and many cricket boards denying permission to their players to compete in domestic T20 competitions. The PSL begins in Lahore on February 17 and all the six franchises have been hit hard with several players opting for the Bangladesh Premier League, ILT20 and SA20 leagues.

PSL side Multan Sultans have lost several players they had initially signed up for the upcoming season, with England pace bowler Reece Topley being the latest to pull out due to an injury.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also said it had not issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) to Topley to play in the PSL.

Some other boards are also having second thoughts about giving no-objection certificates for PSL.

Multan will also be without Pakistan fast bowler Ehsanullah, who has failed to recover from an elbow surgery he suffered last year after the PSL.

Peshawar Zalmi have also lost a big name in Lungi Ngidi of South Africa, while Quetta Gladiators will be without Sri Lanka's Wanandu Hasaranga.

West Indies cricketers Shai Hope, Matthew Forde and Akeal Hosein, South Africa's Tabraiz Shamshi and Rassie van Der Dussen, England's James Vince and Afghanistan's Noor Ahmed and Naveen ul Haq, among others, will also skip the entire tournament.

A PSL franchise owner has asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to revisit the tournament window, as it is not possible to get big players when three leagues are happening on after the other.

"The SA20 ended recently and the ILT20 concludes on the day the PSL begins, so it is getting difficult to sign big players now," he said on condition of anonymity.

He also pointed out that January-February is a busy season for international cricket series. Sri Lanka are playing a series against Afghanistan, South Africa are in the middle of a two-Test series against New Zealand while West Indies are playing a series against Australia.

"There is an acute need to change the PSL window, else it will lose its charm if we don't get big overseas names," he added.

They only interviewed Sonia Bompastor. I'm torn over whether or not that was OLPlay showing me mercy.

SONIA BOMPASTOR INTERVIEW

Journalist: Sonia, before we get started, congratulations. 100 percent success rate for Olympique Lyonnais in the Trophee des Championnes. You defended the title as winner of the Trophee des Championnes. And it's another trophy to launch the 2023-2024 season.

Bompastor: Good evening. Thank you. Yes you're right, in the context of the season, we're starting off with the first official match which allowed us to win a trophy within 90 minutes. So, we have a lot of ambition. We clearly showed that today. And obviously it's much better to win that first game and that first title of the season. It allows us to start off on the right foot even if you analyze the match, I'm sure you saw it wasn't a perfect game, we're not yet at 100 percent when you look at certain factors, like performance.

Journalist: A quick word, Sonia, on the performance of the team overall. Indeed, this Paris Saint-Germain and Gerard Precheur whom you know inside out, they put a system in place that Lyon found difficult to deal with. Despite all that, the efficiency that you presented as one of the keys of the game worked out in Lyon's favor.

Bompastor: Yeah. It's true that we prepared for this game really well. It must be said that we had very little time to prepare for it, because the international players came back late, and there were players who started the game who were recruits. So we obviously need to give them a little bit of time to adjust to our style of play and to understand certain specifics of our opponent who indeed showed up today in a 3-5-2. Journalist: In terms of satisfaction, two of the Lyon recruits were starters, Kadidiatou Diani and Melchie Dumornay. For the first goal, the action started with Kadidiatou [Diani] winning the ball back, Melchie Dumornay who finished scored thanks to a good pass from Eugenie Le Sommer. It's nice to see those two recruits already understanding how the team works and in the first game as well.

Bompastor: Yeah. Yeah, in any case, we knew that in the transfer season we got two good recruits. We have a third in Laura Benkarth, a goalkeeper. But in any case those are two players who were starters today. We already know all their talent and potential, especially offensively. They did us a lot of good. But I don't think the game comes down to just that, even if they were able to stand out, it's because the team knew how to be good individually. Now it's true we scored two goals. We were also really solid defensively. We didn't concede and the whole defensive line, Chris[tiane Endler] as goalkeeper, our midfield. So yeah. Bompastor: Yeah, it's always good to start off your first game with a win [behind you]. Always good to start off having won a trophy, it gives us a lot of confidence, our season is off to a good start. But we head into Friday knowing it's a new competition against a Le Havre team who did really, really well in preseason. They drew against Fleury. We know that this year the league is a little different in how it is structured, so yeah. Let's capitalize on this win, use the confidence, and focus on us. Because even though our opponents will do everything possible to make us lose, we have a lot of qualities, there's a lot of potential in this group and this team. So if we do everything well, we will accomplish all of our objectives that we set for ourselves.

Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope, astronomers have detected three distant gas clouds whose chemical composition matches what we expect from the explosions of the first stars that appeared in the Universe. These early stars can be studied indirectly by analysing the chemical elements they dispersed into the surrounding environment after they died in supernova explosions. The three distant gas clouds detected in this study are rich in carbon, oxygen, and magnesium, but poor in iron. This is exactly the signature expected from the explosions of the first stars. Using ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), researchers have found for the first time the fingerprints left by the explosion of the first stars in the Universe. They detected three distant gas clouds whose chemical composition matches what we expect from the first stellar explosions. These findings bring us one step closer to understanding the nature of the first stars that formed after the Big Bang. “For the first time ever, we were able to identify the chemical traces of the explosions of the first stars in very distant gas clouds,” says Andrea Saccardi, a PhD student at the Observatoire de Paris - PSL, who led this study during his master’s thesis at the University of Florence. Researchers think that the first stars that formed in the Universe were very different from the ones we see today. To search for the telltale sign of these very first stars that exploded as low energy supernovae, the team therefore looked for distant gas clouds poor in iron but rich in the other elements. And they found just that: three faraway clouds in the early Universe with very little iron but plenty of carbon and other elements — the fingerprint of the explosions of the very first stars. This peculiar chemical composition has also been observed in many old stars in our own galaxy, which researchers consider to be second-generation stars that formed directly from the ‘ashes’ of the first ones. This new study has found such ashes in the early Universe, thus adding a missing piece to this puzzle. “Our discovery opens new avenues to indirectly study the nature of the first stars, fully complementing studies of stars in our galaxy,” explains Salvadori.

Each element leaves a different set of lines, so by studying the spectrum astronomers can work out the chemical composition of the intervening gas cloud. To detect and study these distant gas clouds, the team used light beacons known as quasars — very bright sources powered by supermassive black holes at the centres of faraway galaxies. As the light from a quasar travels through the Universe, it passes through gas clouds where different chemical elements leave an imprint on the light. To find these chemical imprints, the team analysed data on several quasars observed with the X-shooter instrument on ESO’s VLT. X-shooter splits light into an extremely wide range of wavelengths, or colours, which makes it a unique instrument with which to identify many different chemical elements in these distant clouds. This study opens new windows for next generation telescopes and instruments, like ESO’s upcoming Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) and its high-resolution ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph (ANDES). “With ANDES at the ELT we will be able to study many of these rare gas clouds in greater detail, and we will be able to finally uncover the mysterious nature of the first stars,” concludes Valentina D’Odorico, a researcher at the National Institute of Astrophysics in Italy and co-author of the study.
