5. What is your favorite movie/TV show to gif?

Most of my stuff has been with either The Witcher or Wizards, but i think I actually really like giffing music videos/documentaries? The lighting is so much easier to work with than it is on many tv shows, and while Wizards was pretty easy to work with in a lot of ways, I think I like working with live action footage more because it makes coloring/blending feel a lot more seamless.

9. What/who inspired you to start making gifs?

At this point, I honestly don't even know?? I was making little gifs as soon as I had proper access to Photoshop on my own device, but I think it was just a natural evolution out of the graphics I would make on Instagram in middle/high school. The biggest inspiration was probably all the graphics/gifs coming out of the Kingdom Hearts fandom though.

13. Where or from whom did you learn how to gif?

Basically everything I've learned came from googling tutorials and finding links on tumblr. I think a few aspects of learning how the timeline worked came from making animations & cinemographs in my graphics class, but if I ever wanted to learn a specific technique or was having an issue with my exporting, I just kinda googled things and dug around until I found what I was looking for.

21. PSDs or original coloring for each gif?

oh I have to make the coloring from scratch every time skjskdhfkdsf; I don't think I even have a generic, catch-all base PSD I use. Only if I'm making a set with similarly lit scenes will I make a base PSD for other gifs, but rarely will I ever use it for a different set.

26. How many un posted sets are in your drafts right now?

None actually 😶 I actually only use my drafts to test out how gifs will look and move on the dashboard + how the gifs will look lined up together; I think the only time I finished a set and didn't immediately post it was when I had done work for a fandom event and was waiting to post on a specific date.

29. Have you ever posted a set, realized you made a mistake later but it was already too late?

omg I don't think so, but I did delete my initial post of a set that I uploaded during the whole tag debacle of early 2022 (the yennskier nicknames one actually, lol), but I had already linked it in a few places, so it had already started to be reblogged and now I just can't see any interactions on it in my feed 😔

32. What is your favorite tool/adjustment layer in Photoshop?

Selective color my beloved omg. Though lately I've been doing a bit more similar color adjustment stuff with the Hue/Saturation layer, and have been figuring out how Channel Mixer works, so those are getting up there. Also can never go wrong with a black + color gradient map sdfdsfds

33. Do you like to/can you make edits and graphics too or only gifs?

I used to do edits/graphics on Instagram, and I probably still could do it to some degree? But I've been gif-focused for awhile now, and I actually used to use free online editing websites like Ribbet and PicMonkey for my old edits because I couldn't get access to Photoshop, so I feel like I would need to recalibrate in a way sdsdfsdfds.

42. How is your gif folder organized? Is it organized at all?

It always starts organized whenever I venture into a new fandom. Then I make a ton of other things, and ton of test PSDs and test gifs and whatnot, and now everything is in at least 5 different folders. Tbh this is just a really good reminder for me to start clearing out things I no longer need and to fix up my folders a bit lmaooo

49. How much would you say you’ve improved since you first started giffing?

So much omg??? And like, I'm definitely extremely critical of my stuff, and honestly have so many crying fits over being unable to get the sharpening/speed/coloring of a gif working well in its final state. But I think about the first gif I ever made, just a simple cut from a show with no tweaking whatsoever, to the kind of things I'm able to make now and am just so 🥺❤ And I was proud of a lot of the things I made in the last year, but now that I've recently been able to get a handle on a lot of the issues I've been having, I feel like what I make accurately reflects my ability atm, and I'm genuinely having fun with giffing again 💗

story process challenge

i was tagged  by @xldkx​​ to do this challenge, created by @herpixels​​​ , like a month? a month and a half? ago and it’s been sitting half finished in my drafts for nearly as long. *sigh* (regardless, i love stuff like this so even if it takes me forever to get to it, i appreciate the tags! 💕). 

i decided to answer all the qs because it took me damn long enough to get to this, so i might as well put some extra elbow grease into it (plus it was fun!). btw it’s all going under a cut b/c it is long. i apologize in advance.

1. My Writing Process - used to be a hot damn mess. literally word docs strewn throughout my pc. However, I recently switched to using Onenote (it’s what i use to organize my d&d campaign notes) and hoo-boy is it so much nicer. this is how it’s set up and it’s honestly night and day. i can have a page with outlines, a page to organize & order screenshots, and a separate page for drafting text, and i can easily toggle though them without having to switch windows? a big thumbs up from me.

When it comes to actual writing- I used to write my drafts in novel format, which i enjoyed but it made “converting” them into tumblr posts time consuming and frustrating. I ended up scrapping most of the text in the process, retaining pretty much only the dialogue. 

Anyway, nowadays I write in more of a screenplay format: dialogue only + key scene information with the occasional note to self. 

I do keep a master “arcs” page with key events and each individual character’s arc from beginning to end and secondary “outline” pages with slightly more detailed outline for each leg of the project. No screencaps b/c spoilers galore! 

My typical work flow process for a scene goes: (1) brainstorm scene ideas, (2) take screenshots, (3) organize screenshots into a rough storyboard, (4) add 1st draft of text, (5) edit photos, (6) edit text, (7) upload to "drafts” here on tumblr, (8) let sit for a bit (9) take a final look at things/proofread and edit as needed. It may sound counterintuitive, but i find it much easier to write dialogue for a set of images rather than attempt to take images based on prewritten text. I feel more comfortable editing and tweaking tone and content in the text this way. Otherwise, I get frustrated when I “can’t” shoot a scene exactly as it appeared in my head.

2. How I build my scenes - A lot of what i do is rooted in gameplay, therefore my sets are usually (a) play-tested and (b) not super pretty. I’ve certainly improved at decorating & building over the years but more often than not I download lots off tumblr and the gallery because I don’t have the patience, aptitude, or time to build all of my own sets. That being said, I frequently gut builds only to build a number of completely unrelated mini sets inside to reduce the number of times i have to replace lots. I also keep a list of “important locations” and where certain characters live / will move to, to help keep this all straight as there aren’t nearly enough lots per neighborhood or even per world in this damn game...

my least favorite part of scene building is actually decorating. lol. Don’t get me wrong, I love clutter. I honestly do. but fuck me if i expect myself to spend hours meticulously decorating a set, spend another 3 hours toggling back and forth b/w BB & live modes adjusting things to get rid of the damn routing errors. (yeah, yeah, i know i could ignore them, they’re not important, especially in those scenarios where i’m using a set for screenshots and nothing else, but idk. it really grinds my gears.) and then have to replace the lot like a week later because there aren’t enough lots in the game. *sigh*

3. CC/Pose Making - i do not consider myself to be a cc creator nor a pose maker but i do dabble occasionally. And to be completely honest i’d much rather spend my time doing other stuff, so it’s not high on my list of priorities atm. plus there are so many talented cc creators in this community; i can usually get by with what’s already out there.

4. Getting in the zone - Honestly, I do a lot of brainstorming for plot & dialogue in the shower. I don’t have any particular playlists to get me “in the writing mood” but I do enjoy listening to music as I work. Either instrumental stuff or simply artists/songs I like. If something just so happens to “fit” a scene I’m working on, one i’ve got planned, or even just gives me vibes for a certain character or group, I add a quick note to the top of said scene’s draft. Most of the time I stick it in the recesses of my brain and add a quick link when I finally get to the point of posting the draft to tumblr. For whatever reason, when I have one of those “oh this song is perfect for X” moments it’s essentially ingrained in my mind for the rest of eternity. 

5. The screenshot folder - this will most likely give some of you out there major anxiety. but i swear it’s an organized chaos. :)

So with the raws from a single random scene selected, you can see i take roughly 10 screenshots per image posted. not terrible i guess but i’m working on it. Typically I take screenshots and once I’m done editing a scene I’ll move them from the general folder to a more specific project folder.

6. Captions - I’ll answer this in three parts:

for my townie story. not really. I prefer using the text box. I tend to write (& re-write) the dialogue for each one of these scenes several times over as I add more “scenes” into my drafts. It would be incredibly inefficient, time consuming, and would waste a lot more space on my pc to have to save .psds of each image just so i could edit dialogue when I decide: “oh hey maybe so and so needs to bring up X in this scene” and then change my mind an hour later.

for niko, noor, & co. I’m a text on image type gal here. don’t really know why, but it gives the project a different energy. ironically it makes it feel more laid-back to me. which i guess makes sense, it’s a much more light-hearted “story” than my townie project. which is, imo, very soapy haha.

for legacy stuff. all text goes below the images in the text box. reasoning: it’s gameplay, I don’t brainstorm, outline, or pre-write for this. I play the game, take screenshots, plug ‘em into my drafts and write some commentary / dialogue to go along with it.

7. Editing - i am a creature of habit and have not majorly changed my editing process in probably a year and a half (when I began using reshade and had to adjust my color correcting psd). it’s a super basic system:

drag & drop my “color correction” psd.

run actions in ps. (i made my own “all-in-one” actions to really streamline the process; i have different “actions sets” for my premades’ story and for other things that get posted to tumblr. even if no one else notices it, i like the little details that keep my projects separate and “identifiable”. 

voila. all set to upload.

sometimes i crop images, add “text effects”, or do more in depth editing (i.e. editing a phone screen or adding rain etc.) but overall i try and keep it simple for myself. 

8. Throwback - i posted an image of one of the first (but never posted) scenes I’d written for my townie project up above. but as for how would i redo a scene i’d already posted. well i’m currently re-doing my townie story so i guess i’ll just say you’ll see how it’s redone when i get to part 1! 😉

Gif colouring tips

This post is some top tips for colouring gifs that I’ve learned from colouring my own gifs over the last year or so.

It’s for people that already know how to gif and have perhaps been using other people’s PSDs or have been trying to colour themselves but haven’t quite got the hang of it yet or have been colouring themselves but don’t like the results.

Don’t use PSD’s - If you learn how to colour your own gifs and then attempt to create a couple of PSDs to use across all of your gifs, you’re most likely going to have crappy results. Every gif (even if they’re from the same scene) will need different layers and settings to make it work. In the time it’ll take you to adjust your PSD’s to suit your gifs, it would be faster to just colour it from scratch. Some people like to have a “signature” look with their colourings, which I understand, but it’s tricky to pull off, particularly if you’re a beginner and you’re giffing multiple fandoms. Which brings me nicely to the next tip. 

Take each gif individually - The best approach to take, in my opinion, is to colour each gif individually. Sometimes if you’re giffing just one scene it is feasible to use the same PSD on every gif, but even then the lighting can be different because the scene has actually been filmed in two or more different takes. 

Make use of your drafts - Drafts serve a purpose - so we can draft things, duh! But until recently, I didn’t realise how useful they could be in making gifs. When you’re in the process of making a gifset, create a post and save it to your drafts. As you make each gif and save it, add it to the post and that way you can see what your gifset is going to look like as it unfolds. It enables you to make sure the colourings of your gifset match because you can see all of the gifs together. And it also means you can simply pop over to PS and add a little brightness or adjust colour balance to make sure the gifs all look similar.

Don’t get too overwhelmed with it - Easier said than done, I know, but I found that the biggest hindrance to me colouring was thinking it was a lot harder than it actually is. Tutorials can seem long and overwhelming, but when you break it down and put it into practice a few times, you’ll realise it’s not as tricky as you think it is. Some gifs can be a lot harder to colour than others, but 9 times out of 10 when I’m making gifs it takes about 5 minutes. A lot of the time I sharpen it, add curves and the gif already looks great, so it’s really not as hard as it seems. 

Practice, practice, practice - Colouring like anything else in life is not something that you’ll be able to do overnight. I’m still learning new things and better methods all the time even after a year of doing it. Experiment, read as many tutorials as you can and just get used to it. When I switched from PS CS5 to CC there were quite a few changes to the methods of giffing and for about 3 weeks I barely giffed because I couldn’t get over the hurdle of having to learn a new process, but now I’m completely used to it. So persevere and set aside a couple of times a week to practice. You don’t even have to post what you make, just practice for yourself. 

Get an eye for colours/what looks good - Like I’ve said time and time again in all of my tutorials, it’s all about judgement when it comes to colouring. Some people may look at my gifs and think I coloured them badly (hell, I do most of the time lmao) or that they would have coloured it differently but that’s the point - everyone has their preferences. Don’t try to replicate somebody else’s colouring exactly, because that’ll never happen (even if you follow every tutorial they have) create colourings that you like. Figure out whether you like pale gifs, vibrant gifs or black and white gifs. Do you like high contrast or low contrast? Bright gifs or not-so-bright gifs? Once you feel confident with the process of colouring gifs, the best thing to do is step away from tutorials and practice colouring by yourself, and eventually you’ll develop your own colouring techniques and preferences without even realising. 

Learn the function of each layer - It’s easy to follow tutorials without fully understanding what the hell you’re doing or what any of it means (I did exactly the same in the beginning), but understanding what each layer does yourself will really help you to colour. The basics are that curves, levels and brightness/contrast change the brightness and colour balance and selective colours change the colour. But there’s more to it than that and each layer serves different purposes. For example, if a gif is particularly red, if you try to go to colour balance and reduce the red right down the gif is going to end up looking awful and most likely green/yellow. The best approach to take in this case would be to apply a little colour balance to reduce the redness and then go in with selective colours and increase the cyan in Reds. You’ll learn the best way to tackle these things by going back to the above tip - practice, practice, practice! 

Everything in moderation - Before I started colouring my own gifs I used PSD’s and a lot of them had 20+ layers. Since I didn’t colour myself, I assumed that was normal, but personally, I rarely exceed 6 layers. It’s not necessary to colour the crap out of a gif with multiple layers of contrast, selective colours etc. Depending on your tastes you may want to do that and that’s fine, but it’s very easy to create good gifs without adding lots of layers and making lots of changes.

Updates to be applied to my rules in due time, but here’s a bulk of important ones to take into consideration for those interested:

I follow first or back based on first impressions. I do not place a heavy focus on formatting, icon styles, psds or background images being used. My concern is with the content being produced, if it is neat (cut down to size per thread for example) and if some form of tagging is in place.

I typically let new follows settle on my dashboard for a little while to get a better sense of posting styles and habits. If i receive a follow back and we become mutual, that gives me a boost to my incentive to interact.

By the time starer/plotting calls and/or memes are being sent my way, I will take the time before responding to read through all available information on your pages. I do not want to overwhelm myself with a plethora of muse facts before a possible thread can even begin.

I work a full time 9-5 job in the GMT timezone. My energy levels in the evenings are quite low during the week. As such, I typically spend my spare time during the week concentrating on organising my icon materials for future use, and some light browsing of the dashboard as well as keeping one eye open for discord chats. Full length replies for my threads can be expected on the weekend.

If I miss your reply/starer, I have most likely: a) lost it b) forgotten to mark it down as a WIP for my drafts c) begun to struggle with an adequate response

It has become very tiring to lean on the hope that maybe some day soon I’ll get a response. None of my writing partners deserve to feel that same sense of desperate disappointment either. First of all, thank you so fluffing much for kind words, you beautiful kind creature!! And second, well.. I wanted to ask did you get the right person, just in case x)

Pff.. now for the tricks.. there is a lot I can share, so if you come off anon, you can dm me and I would be able to help you a lot more than just this, but if you don’t feel comfortable, then sure.. I’ll try to sum up as much as I can :) 

So, the tips for you and everyone wants to read are under the cut.

1.        You said digital art, that means that you are workingin a program. The best way to get better is to learn how to use it and what canyou do with it. Program is a tool, you can be creative with it, so my best tipis to search on YouTube some tips that you maybe didn’t know about and how canyou use shot keys. I personally use Paint Tool Sai (for almost 10 years) andI’ve learn how to make up for the stuff it’s missing so I wouldn’t have to useadobe CS or other expensive hard drive clogging programs.

2.       Composition. When you dodigital art you can mess and fix this part. Choose a canvas shape and size, Iusually use the classic A5 sheet size and decide what I want where. You wouldwant to put a cross on the sheet and move it around to see where you wantpeople to look, for ex the face of the character. Make it a bit off center. Ifyou finish the whole illustration and some random thing draws the attentionmore than the characters face, use circular fade (light center, dark edges) andset it overlayer and lower the opacity, it should help. Also, try flipping thecanvas often cause you may see the mistake before it’s to late, maybe evenfinish the lineart one day and look it tomorrow with fresh eyes before coloringit.

3.       Sketch. I’ll put mydrawing skill in this category. Something that artist generally don’t talkabout much as if it’s some taboo, is referencing stuff. Sure, tracing is badbut finding a stock image isn’t! my illustration folder looks like this

 I can’t draw it all, I would google everything! I google the torso so I would see how to draw those abs, I google the men squatting so I could draw the thigh and knee, and I googled the horses so I wouldn’t have to load my brain and maybe get something wrong. Referencing is ok, that’s how we see how things are supposed to look like and lean. I can draw curly hair and most of the anatomy by now cause I’ve been doing it for years. It takes time but eventually you wouldn’t require the reference. I use to be traditional artist before I was digital, and I draw for over 15 years, Istill think I should be better considering my age.

4.      Coloring. Right now, I just color in 3 layers (base color, multiply layer shadeand overlayer highlight) but I use to be much thorough and had gazillion layersfor everything, to the point my PSD files would be as large as over 1GB. This is one of my old tutorials if you want to look.

5.       Time.This is the most important one. Practice needs time, but more importantly, you need to reduce the time in what you start and finish one illustration. It use to take me a week or even two to do one illustration, and now I don’t allow it to take me over 2 days, one for the lineart and other for the coloring, no more than 4h total. Less time you spent, more will you draw, that means that you will have less vips and more finished illustrations that you can judge and see what you did wrong and how to get better, what you need to fix. My best advice is to look at your work after you are done, look hard and find one thing you are proud off and one thing you can fix, and next time you draw, try to fix that one thing and so on. That way it will be furling and educational and not‘wasted time’

never never never 480 and i try to stay away from 720 tbh. for performances tho i always get .ts files so they are higher resolution, but for other vids definitely 1080 nd if not 720 is okay sometimes
