blue eye samurai is written by white men, the studios specifically based in the us and france, following a wasian character on her revenge mission across historical japan. in it, they throw in, between the english, random mispronounced japanese words to add to the mystification and awesomeness of her adventure.

surrounded in japanese culture, the show still makes an effort to portray lesser known japanese customs as grotesque to their assumed white audience. and it works. it shocks them and pulls them in while they explore this appropriated world through blue eyes - a trait that is recessive but narratively necessary.

to add insult to injury, they take slurs historically and currently used against asian ppl, the terms of our oppressors, fold them over, and have japanese characters sling them at the wasian protagonist - as if the oppression of poc could ever be interchangeable with the white fantasy of reverse racism.

there's so much asian fetishization and dehumanization that's layered in this show, a show that is supposed to be about seeking against vengeance against the white man. somehow, despite its concept, whiteness is still centered and catered to.
