I’m madly curious your take on this matter. What do you believe Nefarious’ species is??? Is it ever mentioned??? Talking 2016 here, not his old human design.

I’ve always theorized he’s an amalgamation of that weird squid looking species from a crack in time and a human. Like a really messed up hybrid.

I don't think it ever was mentioned anywhere, or if it was it was buried in supplementary material or developer work or something 🤔

My working theory right now is that his species largely sticks to their homeworld and that's why we don't see them, and his parents are kind of outliers in that they left to go start a new life on Kerwan in time for their yet to be born son. Maybe they thought the galactic capital would have good opportunities or smth? Neffys a Kerwan city boy through and through.

so for those who aren't already familiar with sweeney todd (or have a passing familiarity with it either via sweeney todd related tiktok content or other similarly related content consumption) one of the first things i would recommend starting with is the 2007 tim burton film since it's a pretty good place to start (and also easily one of the best film adaptations of a musical imo). you can find it on hbo max or on youtube for 3.99 if you don't have and/or want to pay for an hbo max subsciption. there is also the original 1982 proshot starring some of the original cast such as angela lansburry (unfortunately len cariou, the original sweeney does not reprise his role BUT george hearn does a phenominal job in the role). you can find this one on amazon for 3.99 to rent or it and a plethora of other musical proshots on BroadwayHD for 11.99/mo but unless you're interested in watching other musicals and plays on BroadwayHD i would suggest renting it on amazon or 🏴‍☠️ it for free if you know where to look (i honestly don't know what pirating musicals looks like outside of yt bootlegs and i am still very very new to actual bootleg trading so you'd have to ask someone else)

and finally, my personal favourite, the 2023 broadway revival. unfortunately we only have five singles that have (officially) been released (which you can find here on spotify) but we also have the official ballad of sweeney todd performace from this year's tony awards AND there IS a way to watch it if you are like me and can't afford to fly to new york and see it at the lunt-fontanne theater (just dm me for the details). this is quite possibly my favourite version of this story and if great comet wasn't already an indicator that josh groban is a great fit for broadway this DEFINITELY is imo.

They tell him everything Xue Yang does and does not do, because Xiao XingChen vouches for him, a demonic cultivator, another one nonetheless, not quite as mad as the Grandmaster himself, but still as loathed via association alone, bringing Lan QiRen just one step closer to considering the very cultivation world itself lost.

Xiao XingChen knows, not so much painfully as begrudgingly well, that it's most likely his name that had gotten Xue Yang this spot Xiao XingChen had been the one to even demand for him.

It was a necessity.

One more step to fulfill the act that Xue Yang needed redemption he hadn't already fulfilled. One more move to make sure everyone to look at them walking as a pair would see that Xiao XingChen was doing a right and just thing... and that it wasn't his heart that came up with all these conclusions, all the different ways he could justify being as tightly bound to Xue Yang as Xue Yang decided to be bound to him.

So, yes.

They did tell him.

Because he demands to know.

And is he surprised?

No.

Xue Yang didn't become who he became or do what he did, and Xiao XingChen would not even be here, alive to mull over the past and whatnot, if it weren't for Xue Yang's knack for breaking rules and doing as he pleases. He couldn't quite tell how much of it was ingrained into his very character, and how much came to be as a vengeance towards the world that took so much effort to break him into becoming a demonic cultivator in the first place.

Fact is fact, that's all he knows, and if Xue Yang breaks a rule, well... Xiao XingChen can only be glad it was one coupled with a thirst for knowledge as opposed to a massacre waiting to happen.

Perhaps that is why he isn't here to scold him. Xiao XingChen spent a lot of time on a different kind of mountain. Baoshan Sanren had been just as disciplined and strict, but she never presented them with walls covered in thousands upon thousands of rules. The rules they were meant to follow, people like him, people like Song Lan, were implicit, intertwined into the behaviours they were taught to mimic.

Or... in other words, Xiao XingChen doesn't actually respect GusuLan as much as he pretends to, to guarantee Xue Yang a spot here.

The alternative, aforementioned Baoshan Sanren, was not an option - he couldn't return a second time - if he wanted to be around to keep people off Xue Yang's back and away from whatever reaction he would muster to having his toes stepped on.

Whichever sounds closer to the truth.

"You seem to hold quite a bit of reverie for Wei WuXian," Xiao XingChen says, as he seeks out the spot Xue Yang is talking from and assesses it coming close enough to the ground to consider him seated. He lowers himself to the ground nearby, and feels around for the air to turn into bare skin until he knows how much closer he needs to shift.

His fingers brush Xue Yang's arm and he pulls them back as if scalded, revealing no more than that until he's sat directly behind his... his... his?

His tone is carefully neutral. There's no reason for him to believe Wei WuXian and him are in anyway connected to one another, most likely placed in two different categories within Xue Yang's mind. He can't help but wonder, though, how likely Xue Yang would be to break more serious rules, just for a chance to learn from the Grandmaster of the cultivation he's known for.

"Don't be ridiculous," Xiao XingChen adds to the... well, ridiculous suggestion of himself appearing to add more punishment to Xue Yang's already marred back. He may not know what it looks like, but he heard it. And he's heard of how exactly GusuLan thinks discipline can be ingrained into its guest disciples.

One of the many reasons he doesn't like working with sects.

He finds Xue Yang's arm again and pinches the underside he can reach, hardly an action worth of note, just a way to pretend he's annoyed as opposed to all the other things he typically feels around him.

Conflicting and dissonant as they may be.

"Let me help you," his fingertips ghost along and upwards until Xue Yang's arm bends into a shoulder, and then carefully down the first inches of the expanse of his back. He's careful to make sure he's not pushing or adding pressure where the marks start, terrible things as exaggerated as some suggest demonic cultivation to be.

Do you have any HCs about Proton or Petrel? Weirdly, I have brainworms abt them today, akin to hurt/comfort shipping, but idk if I consider their relationship platonic or what. I definitely think of them as close. Proton is an evil little freak who’s gone through the wringer, and Petrel is so laid back + morally grey that he literally doesn’t care what an evil little freak Proton is. (Other people read it as Petrel being THAT dumb and unaware…but that ain’t it, he’s just consciously giving Proton a pass because Whatever)

I’ve been playing around with this HC that Proton lowkey hates Giovanni because he more or less wants to BE him (power-wise - like he’s just got so much rage in there, and subconsciously, he has decided that having MEGA-CONTROL will fix it), but it’s starting to..become apparent + difficult to suppress. Like he’s toeing the line of like bEEFING with Giovanni which is obviously incredibly stupid…but Proton may be incredibly stupid…like that is not going to work out well for him, but he’s such a spiteful dude that he can barely help himself

I like to think that if you squint, all Executives are at the very least platonic towards each other. They've been through some proper shit together and there is definitely some bonding stemming from that. Brothers in arms, so to speak. But you know. More mafia/yakuza-ish. They maybe wouldn't die for each other, but kill? Sure.

With Petrel, 100% of my headcanon about him stems from this fic on pokanon kink meme (which, as a side note, nicely matches Pokemas portrayal as well. I like his consistency). Well, ok, 80%. I have some more thoughts about him that stem from nowhere.

First thing is that I see him as oldest out of the bunch. Maybe not as old as Giovanni (maybe) but old enough to possibly even remember Madame Boss. I like to think him getting as far in the ladder as he did stems from survival instincts and capabilities but also that he just was in TR for quite a while, and his slow climb just happened over time. And yeah, he is very morally grey, he can be nice but it would be dangerous to assume he is nice.

And Proton is... yeah. Youngest of the bunch and I saw him once described as a both a rabid dog to sic at target and most spoiled little cat which both match him, I think. He does feel a bit spoiled, but I think it is tied with the fact that he can be quite violent (I also have a Formative Kink Meme Fic for that, but this one I will not link. It's Proton/Silver and ngl, it was one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever read for sheer amount of triggers. Formative but MAN was it uncomfortable. Feel free to ask me but. Uh. Yeah.) and TR serves him to satisfy that. In some other fic, don't remember which one now, I saw someone theorize that possibly Proton's loyalty sides more with Archer, since Archer know how to use him well, as well as after when Giovanni was gone.

By the way, what do you mean by "gone through wringer"? I know what it means but I am unsure what you mean by that.

Proton, in pokemas at least, claims that he admired Giovanni due to him being "ruthlessly decisive". But at the same time Proton is made a bit more into a joke which... I can see why they would do it, it's easier to make him funny than make him serious in that particular franchise, and I politely ignore that bit while nodding in understanding. Though OK, bootlegs is vile shit. But back to main point - I can see where you come from and I think following that line of thought that what would make Proton envious of Giovanni is his, in a sense, freedom.

Giovanni has plenty of responsibilities that, I would imagine, Proton wouldn't ever wish to shoulder (I like to think his executive task first things first is to be a scarecrow to keep grunts in check...) but at the same time Proton could burn for the way Gio has enough power to handle it all and control and decide freely what to use, even with Proton, and do so effectively. And Proton could probably wish to have that, freedom to do as he wished, to decide what to do. He is young (I wouldn't say he is older than in his early 20s), so he wants all the power without responsibilities coming from it (gah, sudden spiderman!). I could imagine that when Giovanni leaves, Proton is hit with injustice of it. Giovanni can just leave. Can just go, drop everything that Proton thought he desires and vanish into thin air. And Proton is tied to TR because this is his protection and this is where he can do what he wishes to do (as in, violence) and be protected for that from police and such. He wished for that. He can't ever have that.

Everybody being aware of Protons issues could be amusing, and Petrel being the one to keep him in line is a nice thought. Petrel seen it all, knows how TR works better than most, Proton being a bitch is honestly not the worst he's seen but he is aware what the result can be, maybe saw such a few times. And he likes Proton, he's a skilled kid, would be a shame to have him disappeared if Giovanni's amusement over his antics turn into anger (And that would probably fall to Archer and Petrel knows Archer likes Proton as well but Archer's loyalty overrules literally everything else and wouldn't even blink if Giovanni decided enough is enough). (Also, now I ponder on Giovanni personally manhandling Proton when he gets a bit irked a bit and whoa oh erm whoa)

Thank fuck Proton is as reliable as he is, dangle a task in front of his nose and he'd follow, a rabid dog eager to sink his fangs into something. Petrel though knows how to handle the leash so Proton won't bite the hand that feeds him.

Oh boy, sure can. I should preface this by saying that I see Giovanni as an absolute manwhore with commitment issues, so technically all these ships can coexist:

- Giovanni/Ariana

Two bad bitches all around, Gio respects her a whole lot as they are on the same wavelength in most aspects (hc them as Silver's parents. Both regret it)

- Giovanni/Proton

Proton is a determined and feisty kitten who strives for Gio's approval. Unfortunately for his fangirl army Proton's into older men

- Giovanni/Petrel

Gio's weed soking gf and a menace to society. Gio highly appreciates the absolute agent of chaos that Petrel can be

- Giovanni/Archer

I mean, have you seen the guy? He is obsessed. Archer's his boss' loyal dog, Giovanni's the only reason he wakes up in the morning. Will kill and die for him and Gio would have nothing less

- Giovanni/Ghetsis

They hate each other, they want each other. While there's respect and admiration, both have egos the size of the sun, so it's a constant competition for dominance (in multiple ways). They will bite

- Giovanni/Nanu

Go way back, just two old cats. Nanu will do bare minimum to protect Alola from Rocket's shenanigans, yet won't rat Giovanni out to police while he absolutely should. Have a soft spot for each other

Rose is charming and easy to manipulate, a win-win for Gio

So basically pre-game events she moved to New Bark Town from Goldenrod city (??) At age 7 and like. She was besties with Lyra and Ethan

Also like 2 years later (aka shortly before Kaneko Jr. Transitioned) she moved back to Goldenrod

2 years later she moved back to New Bark and that was shortly before the in-game events began. She did recognize Lyra but not Ethan. (Since she only knew him before he transitioned and all)

When the HGSS duo went to take their starters and left Silver went and stole the last remaining starter (a Totodile) which is why when she came to pick a starter there wasn't any left. She was lucky enough to catch a wild shiny Totodile tho (as for starter pokémon I hc that they're as rare as the pseudo-legendaries of their region when they're wild pokémon)

She mostly ventures on her own but usually happens to pass by the HGSS duo and whenever that happens they have sleepovers in wild areas and such (she talks to Lyra more but slowly gets to know Ethan better)

When the tritagonists had to deal with Team Rocket the hgss duo went in disguised as Rocket grunts and Kris had to interfere with the evil team in a different way (like sabotaging the electric systems or something like what imposters do in among us)

Later on during her journey with the other two she started feeling something uncomforting. Something..... Hollow within. And a desire to meet one of the legendary cats (Suicune). KJR noticed and thought he should talk to her about it and something else. The two understood more about one another which is how their strong bond known as newbarkshipping came to be (why am I talking about this rn help me) so like. She found the Suicune and caught it and blablabla yes. Also while venturing she was more focused on completing the pokédex than collecting gym badges and everything.

I also hc that she has a massive family in which Archer and Proton are her uncles

Squishy Nefarious (2016) is unique, as in we never see anyone as the same species as him. Obviously Kerwan is not his species homeworld. (I don't subscribe to the theory that he's the only one of his kind. It just feels boring.)

What does that do to a person as they grow up? To go your entire adolescent life where the only people who look like you are your family, and everyone else around you are various alien species. When everyone in school, everyone in university, everyone in work, is an alien. When you don't look like them and they don't look like you.

My Nefarious never visited his people's homeworld, and his only other point of reference is his mother. He grew up surrounded by aliens.

What does that do to a person's sense of wider identity, of a more larger belonging? Of their self image and self esteem. I don't imagine young and ranger Nefarious being the most socially confident of people. I can't even really imagine what his self esteem must have been like growing up amongst aliens with different values and ideas of things like beauty.

Does he know how handsome he is? How would his own people see him, welcome him? He'd be average to some, handsome, maybe easy on the eyes, to others. Ranger Nefarious has a bit of a baby face in his work photo, do his people too see him as quite young, only a fledgling? What would it be like to go your entire life thinking you're only average or so-so, to go somewhere where not only the people are like you, but some of them are even quite into you?

Why am I only interested in things I can't possibly have a definitive answer to? I suppose that's the fun of building your own interpretation of things.

Approaching from behind, he grabs a few more things off of the shelf; making instant ramen was easy enough, he'd seen the cup that the girl had grabbed, but, what was the POINT of convenience store lunch if it wasn't going to be done correctly?!

"You gotta add this--" He flicks the plastic bag holding the spicy dried squid bits, and plops it into her shopping basket.

"And some of this--" Oop, there goes a soft boiled egg into her basket as well.

"But the most IMPORTANT part, after ya add the hot water to the ramen cup, ya GOTTA put a slice of cheese on top--" Proton deposits a cheap package of single slices into Hilda's now EFFICIENTLY stocked basket.

"I LIVED off of this stuff before I started making more money, it's still good though, I eat it like-- two times a week, maybe three times! Oh-- And one of these."

In goes a pre-packaged pork floss onigiri.

"I BELIEVE IN YOU!"
