A growing Christian supremacist movement that labels its perceived enemies as “demonic” and enjoys close ties to major Republican figures is “the greatest threat to American democracy you’ve never heard of,” according to a new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The SPLC, a civil rights organization that monitors extremist groups, released its “Year In Hate And Extremism 2023” report on Tuesday. A significant portion of the report, which tracked burgeoning anti-democratic and neo-fascist movements and actors across America, is devoted to the New Apostolic Reformation, “a new and powerful Christian supremacy movement that is attempting to transform culture and politics in the U.S. and countries across the world into a grim authoritarianism.”
Emerging out of the charismatic evangelical tradition, the NAR adheres to a form of Christian dominionism, meaning its parishioners believe its their divine duty to seize control of every political and cultural institution in America, transforming them according to a fundamentalist interpretation of scripture.
NAR adherents also believe in the existence of modern-day “apostles” and “prophets” — church leaders endowed by God with supernatural abilities, including the power to heal. In 2022, a handful of these “apostles,” the report notes, issued what they called the Watchman Decree, an anti-democratic document envisioning the end of a pluralistic society in America.
The apostles claimed they had been given “legal power and authority from Heaven” and are “God’s ambassadors and spokespeople over the earth,” who “are equipped and delegated by Him to destroy every attempted advance of the enemy.”
And who’s the enemy? Basically anyone who does not adhere to NAR beliefs. NAR adherents see their critics as being literally controlled by the devil.
“There are claims that whole neighborhoods, cities, even nations are under the sway of the demonic,” the report states. “Other religions, such as Islam, are also said to be demonically influenced. One cannot compromise with evil, and so if Democrats, liberals, LGBTQ+ people, and others are seen as demonic, political compromise — the heart of democratic life — becomes difficult if not impossible.
This rhetoric has become increasingly widespread among Republican lawmakers, including former President Donald Trump, who last year referred to Marxists and atheists as “evil demonic forces that want to destroy our country.”
That Trump would use NAR-inspired rhetoric is unsurprising considering his relationship with Paula White-Cain, an NAR figure who delivered the invocation at Trump’s inauguration in 2017 and at the kickoff of his 2020 reelection campaign, as noted by Paul Rosenberg in Salon. White-Cain also delivered the invocation at Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021, “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington, D.C. — the event that eventually became the insurrection at the Capitol.
The attack on the Capitol was largely inspired, the report suggests, by NAR’s theology of dominionism. “NAR prayer groups were mobilized at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as well as supporting prayer teams all over the country, to exorcise the demonic influence over the Capitol that adherents said was keeping Trump from his rightful, prophesized second term,” the report states.
Major Republican figures took part in such events on or around the day of the attack. Mike Johnson, who is now the speaker of the House, joined the NAR’s “Global Prayer for Election Integrity,” which called for Trump’s reinstatement as president, in the weeks leading up to the attack on the Capitol. Johnson has also stated that Jim Garlow, an NAR leader, has had a “profound influence” on his life.
Ultimately, the SPLC report is an attempt to ring the alarm bells about the NAR, ”the greatest threat to U.S. democracy that you have never heard of.
“It is already a powerful, wealthy and influential movement and composes a highly influential block of one of the two main political parties in the country,” the report continues. “So few people have heard of NAR that it is possible that, without resistance in our local communities, dominionism might win without ever having been truly opposed.”
The SPLC’s report, according to a press release, also documents 595 hate groups and 835 antigovernment extremist groups in America, “including a growing wave of white nationalism increasingly motivated by theocratic beliefs and conspiracy theories.”
“With a historic election just months away, this year, more than any other, we must act to preserve our democracy,” Margaret Huang, president and CEO of the Southern Poverty Law Center and SPLC Action Fund, said in a statement. “That will require us to directly address the danger of hate and extremism from our schools to our statehouses. Our report exposes these far-right extremists and serves as a tool for advocates and communities working to counter disinformation, false conspiracies and threats to voters and election workers.”

“Jesus in the Old Testament” By Bible Love Notes:
“Don't miss the wonderful list that shows how God was "whispering" about Jesus in every Old Testament book!”
“After His resurrection, Jesus met two disciples walking to a village called Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35). They didn't recognize Jesus, but "beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself" (Luke 24:27).
Christ's redemption was part of God's plan from the beginning (Genesis 3:15). When we recognize this important truth, it enhances our understanding and appreciation of both Old and New Testaments.

Daily Devotionals for August 16, 2024
Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living
Devotional Scripture:
Proverbs 22:28 (KJV): 28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set. Proverbs 22:28 (AMP): 28 Remove not the ancient landmark which your fathers have set.
Thought for the Day
This verse has both natural and spiritual implications. Landmarks in ancient Israel marked property boundaries. A stone, a stake, or other monument was used to establish and prevent infringement of property rights. A wicked person would remove a landmark, either out of coveting someone else's property or to mislead people in order to attack them. In Western cultures, a landmark has come to mean primarily some conspicuous object or building that serves as a guide to travelers. Therefore, this verse is telling us to respect the property rights of others, as well as the hereditary rights that our fathers have set up in the past. Neither should we tear down a marker that is used for guidance. This causes confusion and can cause people to lose their way. For instance, when I go back to my old home town, they have changed the streets and torn down old buildings. I cannot find my way around and must get a new map or ask a local person for directions. This does not mean we should not change things for the better - but with change we need to consider those who look for the old landmarks, and identify the old streets by leaving or referencing the old names.
Young Christians should respect their elders' boundaries. There are reasons for the boundaries, and the younger generation would be wise to honor them. This is actually part of obeying the commandment to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12). Young people, in their desire for independence, will often disregard their elders' advice, sometimes to their own detriment. Satan is trying to rid our nation of the ancient moral landmarks that our founding forefathers set in place, especially the Ten Commandments. He knows that without these standards in the earth, he will be able to destroy society. Without respect for authority, our world will be reduced to chaos.
The same can also apply to teachings. Some of the so-called "new" teachings in the Church are really not new at all, but old erroneous ones. They are "winds of doctrine" that toss people to and fro. The Lord gave the church apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to help us walk in the right way, that we may mature in Christ. It is wisdom to listen to our godly church elders. "And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-14).
Prayer Devotional for the Day
Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for the elders in my family, and also the church elders before me, who have paved the way for my life to be blessed. Even though I qualify for this office myself, may I always be childlike and humble in realizing that without my elders, I would not be one today. May I always honor and appreciate them. Help me to respect the young people in my life and not discard their ideas, but be able to embrace those ideas that come from You, not allowing pride to prevent me from recognizing the things You are giving them. Lord, may You restore the hearts of the fathers to the children in our day. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen From: Steven P. “In seeking to know God's will under the old covenant, men were, generally speaking, restricted to the law and the prophets. But Christianity is based not on information but on revelation.
Do you have a book knowledge of Christ? Do you know him only by hearsay, so to speak, from some true servant of His?
Or are you in direct touch with your Lord?
It is one of the most precious factors in our Christian life to have friends who live close to God and who can share with us what he has shown them Again and again we need their arresting challenge or the calm of the mature counsel.
But the New Covenant affirms that "all shall know me," and the word translated "know" means “know me in themselves."
We do not commit ourselves totally and exclusively to the light that comes through holy men of God, however sound it may be.
We are under duty bound to listen to the voice of the Lord Himself, and to follow Him."
~ WATCHMAN NEE
"No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest." (Heb 8:11)

It’s pretty cool how seeing/watching is an important motif and parallel for all the Stark kids (who are POVs).
Jon
This motif is most obvious in Jon’s arc because not only are observation and perceptiveness presented as some of his greatest skills, but watching is quite literally in his job description (“I am the watcher on the walls”).
His very first POV chapter in the entire series sets him apart as a watcher and observer. He does not join the royal procession but instead sits apart from them, watching them and passing judgements (which are quite correct even if some are wrapped with jealousy). We’re also introduced to Benjen who is one of the first people to remark that Jon is quite observant. This is also the chapter in which Jon makes the fateful decision to join the Night’s Watch, which comes after Benjen praises him for his ability to see past what is on the surface.
Arya’s first chapter then further explores the motif of Jon as a watcher because Jon is seated away from the rest of the boys, watching them and passing mostly correct judgements (e.g., Joffrey being a little shit). Even before that, in Bran’s first POV, Jon is introduced as one of the watchers of Gared’s execution. He also emboldens Bran not to look away, but to watch carefully (interesting how this is later paralleled by Bran returning the favor and opening Jon’s third eye). He later makes the judgement that Gared died in fear (which is quite correct because Ned later tells Catelyn that the deserter was driven “half mad with fear”). It’s also in this chapter that they find the direwolf pups and immediately, Jon’s skill as a watcher is manifested. What sets Jon’s direwolf apart from the rest is not just the snow-white fur, but the ruby red eyes which are not only similar to the weirwood trees (which see everything far and wide) but also greenseer eyes (e.g., Bloodraven and the Ghost of High Heart). Melisandre, a seer of prophetic visions, also has red eyes. So Jon sees in both the physical and metaphysical, which is quite a unique character skill.
And the motif of watching follows him throughout his arc as he becomes a man of the Night’s Watch (he’s a steward whose job is to watch and observe Mormont’s leadership) and then later joins the wildlings (where he has to watch and observe their plans to attack the wall); being a spy requires strong observation skills. He also awakens his warging powers in ACOK which enable him to see through another’s eyes, plus his first wolf-dream has him watching the wildling camp; again, this happens after Jon meets Bran who opens his third eye so he can see. As his powers continue to manifest, Jon is able to watch the other direwolves in his dreams. Plus, he also seems to exhibit the power of prophecy, which is seeing beyond the physical. Jon’s most recent prophetic dream has him standing atop the Wall, fulfilling his duty as a Night’s Watchman.
It’s interesting that watching almost always leads to Jon passing judgements - and the more the story progresses, the bigger his judgements are. His ADWD arc is essentially all his watching thus far being put into action and it seems that he is set to become a major player and not just an observer in TWOW/ADOS.
Arya
Seeing is a very important motif in Arya’s arc because it colors much of her character development throughout the series. Like Jon, she’s constantly put in positions where she’s made into an outcast, which forces her onto the sidelines so she can look and watch more clearly.
Like Jon, Arya’s first POV introduces her as a watcher. She joins Jon as he watches Robb, Bran, Joffrey and Tommen spar with swords. But what is interesting here is that she is presented as a watcher of watchers (she is watching Jon, who watches the boys down below). Both Jon and Arya make important observations in that chapter (e.g., Joffrey having his mother’s sigil placed equally to his royal father’s), but they also remark on their own statuses as outcasts who have been forced out of the main action and can only watch what happens down below (bastards getting only the swords and girls only getting the arms).
Then we have other important moments where Arya has to watch, and sometimes what she watches is traumatic. While down in the tunnels of King’s Landing, she is a passive observer of Varys’ and Illyrio’s plotting. Then we have her father’s execution where Arya is forced to watch as her father confesses to treason. Interestingly, Arya doesn’t actually see Ned’s execution because Yoren stops her from doing so; to parallel Sansa who actually does see it.
We start the story with Arya being someone who can see beyond the surface (beyond class, gender, etc), but this is heightened to an almost traumatic degree as her arc progresses. She is forced to see first hand the devastation of the Riverlands as the War of the Five Kings rages on. And as this is happening, she is forced into becoming more of an outcast (e.g., a slave in Harrenhal). This is also around the time when she begins to have wolf dreams - where she can see through Nymeria’s eyes.
Then she has to go to Braavos where she is trained to see and observe more deeply. She spends a lot of time observing people and then relaying that information back to the HoBaW. Her first kill is made possible by her strong observation and analytical skills. But interestingly, she looses her eye sight as part of her training (but this is when she develops the ability to skinchange into a cat); like the time when Ned was executed, Arya’s eyes being covered lead to greater development. Arya’s name during this period (where he sight is taken away) is Blind Beth.
But Arya is at a time where she isn’t just a passive watcher, but an actor as well. We can see this more pointedly with the theatre troupe she is joining in TWOW where she actually has to act out. But she could also be using her powers of observation as an acolyte of the Faceless Men. Like Jon, Arya is becoming a very powerful player due to her time as an outcast watching from the sidelines.
Bran
I put Bran as third because a lot of his arc parallels Jon and Arya. For much of the first book, Bran is an outcast watching from the sidelines as other players move around in the game.
Bran, like Jon, is first introduced to us as a watcher. Bran watched Gared’s execution and this chapter plants the seed for Bran as someone who does not look away from the ugly things; he chooses to watch as instructed by Jon. Like Arya, the first chapter also has Bran be someone who watches the watcher (namely Jon); he watches Jon watch Theon, for example.
Then Bran’s next chapter places him as a watcher who sees many important (and deadly) things. He sees that Jon is unhappy about going to the Wall. And this is also where his infamous defenestration happens - Bran watches Jaime and Cersei commit treason against King Robert. I think this is a pretty cool parallel with Arya since she observed Varys and Illyrio plot their own form of treason against the Baratheon king.
Though he doesn’t start out an outcast like Jon and Arya were, Bran does eventually become one once he is crippled. This forces him to take a bigger watching role - i.e, watching Robb (and also noticing the distinction between Robb the Lord and Robb the Boy). Bran also awakens his greenseer abilities, and he has several prophetic dreams all throughout AGOT; another parallel with Jon who starts having prophetic dreams in this book.
Though he is crippled, Bran does (briefly) occupy a seat of power as he is made to watch over Winterfell and its people in Robb’s stead. This is also the book in which he becomes a warg (and has his first wolf dream, just like Jon and Arya). It’s also in this book that Bran meets Jon in a wolf dream and tells him that he doesn’t mind the darkness because it gives him the ability to see others while they can’t see him (though interestingly, Jon actually can see Bran - is it because Jon is a watcher too?). Bran also opens jon’s third eye so that he can see much and more; a way in which watching connects these two characters who also seem to share a magical destiny.
Bran later makes his way to the three-eyed crow and is now learning to see more through ravens, weirwoods, and even humans (e.g., Hodor - though this is not something he is being taught). And this is giving him the power to influence others all over Westeros. He reaches out to Theon, Arya, and maybe even Jon at Castle Black. Like Jon and Arya, Bran is not just a passive observer but is becoming quite the active and powerful player.
Sansa
It’s interesting how watching/seeing presents itself in Sansa’s arc because, on the surface, it seems as if she doesn’t see much. But that’s not really true. Sansa is actually very observant - the issue comes with how she interprets what she does see.
Unlike her siblings, Sansa doesn’t really start out as an outcast. Jon is a bastard, Arya a gender non-conforming girl, and Bran a cripple. But like her siblings, Sansa’s first chapter has her watching - first Arya and Mycah then later Joffrey. It’s interesting how Joffrey is a common factor in Arya’s and Sansa’s watching experiences (he appears in both their first and last chapters and his actions are important).
Sansa parallels Arya because she is present at Ned’s execution but where Arya can’t see it actually happen, Sansa does. Then Joffrey forces her to see her father’s people as their heads are paraded stop the walls. It’s after this that Sansa becomes an outcast of sorts in King’s Landing. Joffrey has shunned her and she is subjected to daily abuse (much like Arya in Harrenhal). Because of this, she takes on the role of an observer in the king’s court.
She watches Barristan Selmy’s dismissal, observes Cersei during the Blackwater, watches the event that unfold at purple wedding, watches the Tyrells as they establish power in King’s Landing, and much more. It’s during this period that she starts to make small but important steps as a player (e.g., saving Dontos after watching Joffrey abuse him). As Littlefinger’s bastard daughter, she now watches the inner workings of the Vale lords (and Littlefinger as well). It’s a parallel she shares with Arya since both sisters are being trained to observe others closely. They’re rather complementary arcs: Sansa is at court watching and seeing as the lords play their game of thrones and grab power and influence wantonly, whereas Arya gets to watch and see how this game of thrones negatively affects the small folk. Interesting enough, we get a brief inversion where Sansa gets to observe how the small folk are being impacted during the bread riots and Arya can briefly see how the lords play their game of thrones in Harrenhal.
A difference between Sansa and her siblings, however, is that she is yet to unlock her warging. One could argue that her ability to see in a magical sense had been cut off, but some readers speculate they she might learn to skinchange into birds or the old dog in the Eyrie.
However, like all her siblings, Sansa is now moving from a passive observer to an actor. Her sample TWOW chapter shows us that she is slowly moving into the political epicenter of the Vale. So another Stark kid shifts from being a pawn who can only watch in the sidelines to an active player in the game of thrones.
Other Miscellaneous Parallels
There’s a small link between watching and stewardship - stewardship in the sense of kingship. Jon is a Night’s Watchman and also the Lord Commander - and is linked to kingship often in the narrative. Bran is a greenseer and also the rightful Lord of Winterfell - plus, he’s Robb’s royal heir. These two brothers are also the two central characters in the fight against the Others, and each takes on a role that involves watching and seeing as their main power against the coming winter. For Jon and Bran, their ability to see the physical and metaphysical seems to be connected to whatever magical destiny they have as kings and stewards of the realm and it’s people.
A small but interesting parallel Jon and Sansa have is that they see contempt in Joffrey in their first POV chapters. Jon notices the contempt Joffrey has towards Winterfell’s grey walls as he watched the royal procession, while Sansa notices the contempt Joffrey has towards her at the Trident.
Another parallel that is shared among all the Stark kids is that they watch an execution done in the name of a Baratheon king. Gared’s execution, watched by Jon and Bran, is done in King Robert’s name and Ned’s later execution, as watched by Sansa and Arya, is done in King Joffrey’s. Jon also watched fake!Mance’s execution which is done in King Stannis’ name.
Jon, Bran, and Arya are paralleled in that they are watchers in the shadows or the darkness. Arya is hidden in the shadows as she observes Varys and Illyrio, Jon notes that he is a shadow among shadows watching others, and Bran states that he likes the darkness because it allows him to observe others while they can’t see him.
Lastly, I’ve realized that Jon is a common denominator in Bran’s and Arya’s watching experiences. In Bran’s first chapter, Jon instructs him not to look away; and Bran heeds his advice and watches closely. Because Jon emboldened him to watch, Bran gets to learn the important lesson that a man can be both brave and afraid. Then in Arya’s first chapter, Jon instructs her to look at what is happening down in the yard. And this also emboldens her to see Joffrey for what he is; and she is also able to make important observations on the social divisions that she and Jon are victimized by.
All in all, it’s obvious that the Stark kids had to be observers as part of their training. A time for wolves is coming, and these watchers from the sidelines are poised to become major players.

In the earlier parts of chapter six, there was a dialogue choice from Yuu that made me think of something. When Lilia was telling everyone about the Watchman of the Underworld and the history of mages, he says, "There is no shortage of historical narratives that have been twisted to suit someone's agenda." Which follows with the option for Yuu to say, "Twisting historical narratives, huh..." Sorry, I think I need to split this into two parts.
The remarks made by Lilia (and Yuu’s subsequent reaction) in 6-18 are basically the same in Japanese.
At this point in the story, Yuu is starting to realize and put the pieces together that their dreams are prophetic, yet different and more evil versions of the tales of the Great Seven. If you’ll recall, alllll the way back in the start of episode 5, Yuu wakes up from a dream and runs to the Main Street statues to compare the Beautiful Queen to the woman in their dreams. They then realize they have seen all of the Great Seven before in the same fashion before similar events play out in real life. It is for this reason that Yuu is compelled to follow Vil when he attempts to isolate Neige and poison him.
The episode 6 remark doesn’t come out of nowhere; it’s likely a follow-up to episode 5 where Yuu is slowly starting to suspect and “awaken” to the truth of the history they see versus the history Twisted Wonderland recalls. It’s probably going to be addressed in 7 as well (maybe even fully explained why this discrepancy exists).

My dear Librarian--
Do you have any idea how difficult it is to copy out a book while you have a Raw Prophet attempting to make congress with your kneecaps? Even if I restrain myself and only copy the most relevant paragraphs, it's a thankless task.
You shall have your book returned to you, but I implore you- call off your watch dog.
Sincerely,
The Thief Borrower Of The History Of Inks
Good Sir,
A watch dog that fails to alert of intruders and instead eats the books is an ineffective watchdog indeed. I have also noticed that its... presence... has not induced you to return your stolen property with any degree of alacrity. Do try not to insult me — the fine-takers employed by the libraries of the Watchman's Tree are much more competent than a stray Raw Prophet.
Since you still seem to be struggling with your houseguest, I recommend picking up a copy of Exorcisms for Girls, by Thirza Blake, at any reputable occult bookstore. While you're at it, consider taking responsibility for your own misfortunes.
Best of luck,
The Yard Sale Librarian

Hosea Announces Israel's Punishment
Do not rejoice, O Israel, with exultation like the nations, for you have played the harlot against your God; you have made love for hire on every threshing floor. The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them, and the new wine will fail them. They will not remain in the land of the LORD; Ephraim will return to Egypt and eat unclean food in Assyria.
They will not pour out wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please Him, but will be to them like the bread of mourners; all who eat will be defiled. For their bread will be for themselves; it will not enter the house of the LORD. What will you do on the appointed day, on the day of the LORD’s feast? For even if they flee destruction, Egypt will gather them and Memphis will bury them. Their precious silver will be taken over by thistles, and thorns will overrun their tents.
The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have arrived— let Israel know it. The prophet is called a fool, and the inspired man insane, because of the greatness of your iniquity and hostility. The prophet is Ephraim’s watchman, along with my God, yet the snare of the fowler lies on all his paths. Hostility is in the house of his God! They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah; He will remember their guilt; He will punish their sins.
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers as the firstfruits of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal-peor, and consecrated themselves to Shame; so they became as detestable as the thing they loved. Ephraim’s glory will fly away like a bird, with no birth, no pregnancy, and no conception. Even if they raise their children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes, woe be to them when I turn away from them! I have seen Ephraim, like Tyre, planted in a meadow. But Ephraim will bring out his children for slaughter. Give them, O LORD— what will You give? Give them wombs that miscarry and breasts that dry up!
All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I hated them. I will drive them from My house for the wickedness of their deeds. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious. Ephraim is struck down; their root is withered; they cannot bear fruit. Even if they bear children, I will slay the darlings of their wombs. My God will reject them because they have not obeyed Him; and they shall be wanderers among the nations. — Hosea 9 | The Reader’s Bible (BRB) The Reader’s Bible © 2020 by Bible Hub and Berean.Bible. THE HOLY PROPHET ELIAS/ELIJAH ( 9th. c B.C)
Saint Elijah, one who saw God, a miracle worker and a zealot for faith in God, was born of the tribe of Aaron from the town Tishba for which he was called the Tishbite. When St. Elijah was born, his father Savah saw an angel of God hovering around the child, wrapping the child in fire and giving him a flame to eat. That foreshadowed Elijah's fiery character and his God-given fiery power. He spent his entire youth in godly thoughts and prayers, withdrawing frequently into the wilderness to contemplate and to pray in solitude. At that time, the Jewish kingdom was divided into two unequal parts: the kingdom of Judah, consisting of only two tribes, the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, with their capital in Jerusalem, and the kingdom of Israel, consisting of the remaining ten tribes with their money in Samaria. The first kingdom was governed by the descendants of Solomon, and the second kingdom was ruled by the descendants of Jeroboam, the servants of Solomon. The most significant confrontation the prophet Elijah had was with the Israelite King Ahab and his evil wife, Jezebel. For they, Ahab and Jezebel worshipped idols and turned the people away from serving the One and Living God. Before this, Syrian Jezebel persuaded her husband to erect a temple to the Syrian god Baal and ordered many priests to serve this false god. Through great miracles, Elijah displayed the power and authority of God: he closed up the heavens so that there was not any rain for three years and six months; he lowered a fire from heaven and burned the sacrifice to his God, which the pagan priests of Baal were unable to do; he brought down rain from heaven by his prayer; miraculously multiplied flour and oil in the home of the widow in Zerepath, and resurrected her son; he prophesied to Ahab that the dogs will lick up his blood and to Jezebel that the dogs will consume her flesh, all of which happened as well as many other miracles did he perform and prophesy. On Mount Horeb, he spoke with God and heard the voice of God in the calm of a gentle breeze. Before his death, he took Elisha and designated him as his successor in the prophetic calling; by his mantle, he divided the waters of the Jordan River; finally, he was taken up into the heavens in a fiery chariot by flaming horses. He appeared on Mount Tabor to our Lord Jesus Christ together with Moses. Before the world's end, St. Elijah will appear again to end the anti-Christ's power (Revelation, Chapter 11).
ST. ALEXIS MEDVEDKOV, ARCHPRIEST OF UGINE (1934), ELIAS FONDAMINSKII (1942), PRIEST DEMETRIUS KLEPININE (1944), YURI SKOBTSOV (1944), AND NUN MARIA (SKOBTSOVA) (1945), OF PARIS
St Alexis Medvedkov, archpriest of Ugine (1934)
St Alexis of Ugine was born in Russia in 1867. Afterward, he went to seminary and became a reader and choir director at a St Petersburg parish. He felt unworthy of the priesthood but finally accepted ordination, encouraged by St John of Kronstadt. He was sent to serve a village 60 miles from the capital. As was the case for many priests, his meager salary was not enough. Side by side with his neighbors, he worked the land. Yet he also lived a life of mind and spirit, saving money to buy the writings of the Church Fathers. He was also a parent -- he and his wife had two daughters. His pastoral zeal was recognized -- in 1916, at age 49, he was made an archpriest. Then the following year, in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution, he was arrested, tortured, and sentenced to death. Remarkably, his eldest daughter freed her father by offering herself as a hostage in his place. The effects of torture remained with him for the rest of his life. Because of nerve damage, his right eye was always wider than his left.
In 1919 the entire family managed to escape to Estonia, where Fr Alexis worked in a mine and then as a night watchman. In 1923 he became an assistant priest at a local parish, also helping in the parish school. In 1929, following prolonged illness, his wife died.
After this heavy blow, he was invited by Metropolitan Evlogy in Paris to come to France. He was sent to the town Ugine, near Grenoble, to serve as rector of St Nicholas Russian Orthodox church. A local factory employed 600 Russian immigrants.
He often celebrated the Liturgy on weekdays, Sundays, and feast days. He was known for how carefully he intoned each word when he stood in the sanctuary. After services, he would stay on to do memorial services and meet whatever other needs were brought to him by his parishioners, never charging money.
His congregation proved difficult. The parish council was dominated by secular-minded lay people of a military background, men used to giving orders, whose primary interest was politics. Some harassed Fr Alexis during services. Some were abusive. When insulted, he replied with silence. He patiently endured the criticism of those who regarded the services as too long or criticized him for not dressing better.
His health declined -- doctors diagnosed cancer of the intestines. In July 1934, he was taken to hospital. He died on the 22nd of August. On the advice of a physician who warned that Fr Alexis' cancer-ridden body would rapidly decompose, he was buried in a double coffin.
His parishioners, even those who had been hostile, came to remember him as an exceptionally modest man, shy, full of gratitude, prayerful, outgoing, compassionate, slow to criticize, eager to forgive, generous with what little he had, who never turned his back on anyone in need.
A friend who visited him during those final weeks of his life recalled him saying: "In my parish, the true parishioners are the children, the children of my parishioners ... and if those children live and grow up, they will form the inner Church. And we, too, belong to that Church as long as we live according to our conscience and fulfill the commandments ... Do you understand what I mean? In the visible Church, there is an invisible Church, a secret Church. In it are found the humble who live by grace and walk in the will of God. They can be found in every parish and every jurisdiction. The emigration lives through them and by the grace of God."
It was a life of ordinary sanctity -- small deeds of holiness performed daily that were either taken for granted or ridiculed. He might have been entirely forgotten had it not been for a decision by the Ugine town council in 1953 to build flats on the site of the cemetery. The remains of those buried in the old cemetery were moved. On the 22nd of August, 1956, precisely 22 years after Fr Alexis's death, workmen came to his grave and found that his double coffin had entirely disintegrated. Still, his body, priestly vestments, and the Gospel book buried with him had not decayed.
I have left out many details of his life. Still, you see the main lines: great suffering, endurance, patient service to impatient people, belief in the face of disbelief, an uprooted life, the early death of his wife, his own brutal death, a love of prayer, a constant witness to God's love -- and then a sign after death that served to resurrect his memory and inspired the decision that this humble priest ought to be remembered by the Church. The memory of the Church is the calendar of the saints.
St Eli Fondemensky of Paris ( 1942)
Born in February 17, 1880, in Moscow, Russia — November 19, 1942, in Auschwitz, Nazi-occupied Poland),
He was a Russian author (writing under the pseudonym I. Bunakov) and political activist in the 1910s, one of the leaders of the Esers party, in 1917, a senior member of Alexander Kerensky's Provisional government
In 1918, Fondaminsky took part in the Iași Conference. In Paris, where he has been living since 1919, Fondaminsky veered off from the left and became an influential newspaper editor (Sovremennye Zapisky, among others), author of philosophical essays, and in the later years — much-admired philanthropist, supporting Christian magazines and charity funds. In his biography of Mother Maria Skobtsova, Pearl of Great Price, Father Serge Hackel wrote that Fondaminsky gave occasional lectures at the Sunday afternoon gatherings at the house on the Rue de Lourmel.
Facing the Nazi occupation, Fondaminsky refused to leave Paris, saying he would accept his destiny, whatever it would be. Arrested in July 1941 as a Jew and sent to the concentration camp, he adopted Christianity and was received into the Russian Orthodox Church not long before being sent to Auschwitz. Ilya Fondaminsky died there on November 19, 1942, aged 62.
Priest Dimitry Klepinine (1944)
Father Dimitri Klepinin was born in 1904 in Russia to an educated, cultivated, devout Orthodox family. His mother, Sophia, helped establish Orthodox schools in Odessa, where they lived, and became active in providing help and support to the city’s poor. The Klepinin family fled Russia after the Communist Revolution, first residing in Constantinople, then Yugoslavia, and finally in Paris, France. A turning point in Dimitri’s life occurred in 1923 when his beloved mother died. He described this experience in a letter to a friend:
“…the first time I understood the significance of suffering…But joy returned to me when I remembered the Savior’s words: ‘Come to Me, all who labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. I had come to my mother’s grave with the heavy burden of worldly worries. Everything seemed confused and unsolvable when suddenly I found the light yoke of Christ. I’ve never known a day more joyful than that day, and I thank God for all He’s given me to bear. After that experience, I reoriented my life, and it became easier to resolve certain problems."
In 1925, Dimitri enrolled in the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris, and after graduating in 1929, he received a scholarship to study in America at the New York Protestant Theological Seminary. Returning to Paris, he worked various jobs while remaining active in the Church, directing the parish choir. Dimitri married Tamara Baimakova in 1937 and was ordained by Metropolitan Evlogy. A daughter Helen was born in 1939, and a son Paul in 1942. Father Dimitri’s life was forever changed in 1939. He was assigned as the parish priest at the shelter for the poor operated by an Orthodox nun, Mother Maria Skobtsova. Significantly for his life and that of Mother Maria, that same year France was invaded and conquered by the German Nazis. Mother Maria (now St. Maria of Paris) had opened a home and shelter to minister to the poor of Paris. As the Nazis began the mass arrests of French Jews in 1942, many sought help and refuge at Mother Maria’s shelter. As a shield against deportation to a concentration camp, many Jews sought to obtain baptismal certificates from Father Dimitri. While initially troubled by engaging in such deception, he realized his Christian Faith and priesthood demanded that he act. He placed a small mark on the false certificates to remember which were authentic and which were not.
Christ would give me that paper if I were in their place. So I must do it… …If a man surprised by a storm takes shelter in a church, do I have the right to close the door?
During war, suffering, and mass arrests, one of Father Dimitri’s parishioners wrote of the experience of celebrating Pascha with him in 1942. It was to be his final Pascha at his parish:
Outside there were restrictions, anguish, and war. Here in the church, lit up by our candles, was our priest, all vested in white, as if borne on the wings of the winds. With his face radiant, he proclaimed, “Christ is risen!”. And we responded, “Truly He is risen!” causing the shadows to scatter.
In February, 1943, the Gestapo arrived at Mother Maria’s shelter and arrested Mother Maria, her son Yuri and several others. In Yuri’s pocket, they discovered a letter from a Jewish family to Father Dimitri requesting a baptismal certificate. Father Dmitri was absent during the raid, but the following day, he calmly celebrated a final Divine Liturgy in the church and went to face the Gestapo.
Two months later, Father Dimitri and Mother Maria's son Yuri were sent to a prison camp. In the camp, Father Dimitri continued to function as a priest. The Orthodox prisoners were permitted to set up a chapel where the Divine Liturgy was served daily. Father Dimitri could sketch the chapel, which he smuggled out to his wife. In letters he wrote to his family, he encouraged his wife to remain strong:
Make the morose thoughts go away with the Jesus Prayer, take Communion as often as possible…Don’t let despondency or irritation take root in you, and dash and confess to a priest.
Of his own life he wrote:
I am fully aware that the will of God is being carried out and that a new obedience in the Church is beginning for me.
After a year, Father Dimitri was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany and then to the camp at Dora. His health was broken; suffering from pneumonia, he died on February 9, 1944, and his body was burned in the Buchenwald crematorium. When word reached his family that Father Dmitri had died, Metropolitan Evlogy officiated at a solemn funeral service in the Paris Cathedral. On January 16, 2004, Father Dimitri, Mother Maria, her son Yuri and associate Elia Fondaminski were all glorified as martyrs/saints of the Orthodox Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Their memory is kept each year on their feast day of July 20
Saint Marie of Paris (1945)
Mother Maria was born in Latvia in 1891. Like many of the pre-Revolutionary Russian intelligenstia, she was an atheist and a political radical in her youth but gradually came to accept the truths of the Faith. After the Revolution, she became part of Paris's large Russian emigre population. There she was tonsured as a nun by Metropolitan Evlogy, and devoted herself to a life of service to the poor. With a small community of fellow believers, she established 'houses of hospitality' for the poor, the homeless, the alcoholic and visited Russian emigres in mental hospitals. In 1939 Metropolitan Evlogy sent the young priest Fr Dimitry to serve Mother Maria's community; he proved to be a partner, committed even unto death, in the community's work among the poor. When the Nazis took Paris in 1940, Mother Maria, Fr Dimitry, and others of the community chose to remain in the city to care for those who had come to count on them. As Nazi persecution of Jews in France increased, the Orthodox community's work naturally expanded to include protection and care of these most helpless ones. Father Dimitri was asked to provide forged certificates of baptism to preserve the lives of Jews and always complied. Eventually, this work led to the arrest of Mother Maria, Fr Dimitri, and their associates. A fragment survives of the Gestapo's interrogation of Fr Dimitri:
Hoffman: If we release you, will you give your word never again to aid Jews? Klepinin: I can say no such thing. I am a Christian and must act as I must. (Hoffman struck Klepinin across the face.) Hoffman: Jew lover! How dare you talk of helping those swine as being a Christian duty! (Klepinin, recovering his balance, held up the cross from his cassock.) Klepinin: Do you know this Jew? (For this, Father Dimitri was knocked to the floor.) "Your priest did himself in," Hoffman said afterward to Sophia Pilenko. "He insists that if he were to be freed, he would act exactly as before." Mother Maria, Fr Dimitri, and several of their colleagues were sent to the Nazi concentration camps (Mother Maria to Ravensbruck, Fr Dimitri to Buchenwald) where, after great suffering, they perished. It is believed that Mother Maria's last act was to take the place of a Jew being sent to death, voluntarily dying in his place.
JAMES 5:10-20
10 My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience. 11 Indeed, we count them blessed who endure. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord-that the Lord is very compassionate and merciful. 12 But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your "Yes" be "Yes," and your "No," "No," lest you fall into judgment. 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the church's elders, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. 18 He prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. 19 Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover many sins.
LUKE 4:22-30
22 So all bore witness to Him and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, "Is this not Joseph's son?" 23 He told them, "You will surely say this proverb to Me, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard in Capernaum, do also here in Your country.' " 24 Then He said, "Assuredly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel during Elisha the prophet's time, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian. 28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then, passing through the midst of them, He went His way.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 5:17-20). From: Steven P.
