FFxivWrite 2021 Prompt 6: Avatar

"Look! Look at what we made at Poppaw’s house!”

Khoda came running up to the sea wolf in her home office as they were getting dropped back off from a stay at the woman’s parents. A giggling two year old followed swiftly behind the young girl while the twins were being passed off to Sana in the living area. Normally she made a point of finishing out an entry when someone wanted her attention in the middle of paperwork, but for the kids the quill always got set back into the well immediately. “Well c’mon then, lemme me see what you made!”

The miqo’te girl set a small tray on the pale woman’s desk, careful not to land directly on the wet ink. “Look! Here’s you and momma!” Khoda pointed out the first two in a line of cookies, made in a vague shape of each person and then decorated with icing and little candies for details like eyes. The more detailed ones certainly looked to have been made by the youth explaining things, stealing a glance ahead definitely revealed that Alvin had been ‘helping’ in the process too. “This is me and Terbie! I know she doesn’t live with  us but we did Mede with Alvin so I wanted her with me too! They’re right here. Poppaw showed us how to do the whole thing, and he only helped a little bit with the stirring and putting things in the oven! He one out of Memaw so we could see. Alvin helped too.”

His help looked to be making the curly hair for the younger set of twins, which included a bunch of squiggles over their face. “And these are the babies! That’s where Alvin helped and.. wait. Where is that one’s tail?”

Almost immediately there was a giggle from the doorway, and a frosting-faced geck’to once again performing his victory dance.

This is literally based on a true baking incident…that I am massively ashamed of lol. Just in case anyone wonders the believablity of the mistakes made, yes it’s very possible to mix-up, and yes, no one has ever trusted me to bake ever since

Ozzie woke up early the next morning, feeling better than he had, mostly just feeling like he had allergies or a cold. Tyler still felt warm next to him so he decided to let them rest, careful to get out of the bed quietly and walk out to the kitchen. Tyler had mentioned once that they really liked cinnamon coffee cake, that didn’t sound too hard to make. He found a recipe book in one of the cabinets and started gathering the ingredients necessary and a bowl.

“Baking something?” Maudie asked walking out after hearing someone was awake.

Ozzie nearly dropped the dish as he was placing it in the oven. “Oh sorry, was I supposed to ask first? I tried to clean up but I still have to put stuff away.”

“It’s fine, I just did a grocery run so there’s no worry of us going short. What did you make?” She asked, looking through the ingredients. “A lot of this makes sense together until this.” She asked holding up a spice bottle.

“Cinnamon coffee cake. That’s the cinnamon?”

“No. This is cumin?” She asked showing him the label.

“Not cinnamon?”

“Nope, cumin. Very different.” She responded laughing.

“I thought I grabbed the cinnamon....”

“It’s okay, you’re tired. I’m sure anyone could’ve made this mistake.” She said trying to stop laughing, pulling the batter from the oven and quickly mixing in some cinnamon to try and save it.

“Tyler is going to hate me.” He sighed, sitting down on the kitchen floor. “I tried to make their favorite thing and messed up.”

“Have you met Tyler? That kid pulls pranks constantly, if anything, they’ll find this hilarious.” She promised. “I’ll bake Christmas cookies tonight with you two if you’re both up for it. It’s Christmas Eve after all.” She encouraged, wanting to cheer him up.

“We didn’t miss Christmas?” Ozzie asked excitedly.

“You didn’t, and I’m gonna go out and get presents tonight so you and Tyler better be asleep nice and early so I have time to do so.”

“We will, I thought we missed Christmas…good thing we didn’t.” He said smiling brightly.

Once the coffee cake finished baking, Ozzie nervously pulled it from the oven. Maudie sprinkled some more cinnamon on top, cutting a few slices onto plates. Ozzie grabbed one to bring to Tyler.

“I made this for you but I‘m not sure it’s edible.” He said before setting it down. Tyler slowly sat up, giving him a confused look before eyeing the cake and pulling it over to them to try it.

“It’s interesting…lot of cinnamon but it’s really good.” They said smiling.

“It’s good? There’s cumin in it though?”

Tyler glanced down at the cake and shrugged.

“Of course you mixed up cumin and cinnamon. Still tastes good though, lots of cinnamon, sugar, bread. Amazing. Sugar can make anything taste good.” They said, laughing hard though at the thought of the mix-up.

Ozzie sat down next to Tyler, leaning up against them.

“Your friend said that we didn’t miss Christmas. It’s tomorrow. There’s going to be presents and we’re gonna make cookies tonight, like a real Christmas. I thought I was gonna miss my first Christmas, well first real one.”

“That’s good, we’re going to make sure it’s the best Christmas ever then since it’s your first one. My family did Christmas but it was always just…awkward. Maudie does a really good Christmas though, she makes it really fun. You’ll love it.”

“I’m excited, you’ve got to get better though first.” Ozzie insisted.

“Obviously, I already feel a lot better now that I’ve got you here again. Was worried when I woke up and you weren’t here.” Tyler leaned their head against Ozzie after setting their plate down. “Cumin not cinnamon…that’s hilarious.” They said leaning over laughing.

“I guess it it pretty funny.” Ozzie said laughing at well.

“Come on, let’s get ready, Christmas starts now.” Tyler said grabbing his hand and quickly hurrying out of the room.

Whumptober Day 6: No More (Rin Matsu)

Anisha was in the kitchen of the Hoard. That was what The Adventurers tended to call Laurance and Anisha’s house. Rin and Kiera’s house was often known as the Den. Speaking of Rin, he was napping on the couch. He didn’t often pass out during the day, but there he was, softly snoring with one of the pillows to his chest. 

She stirred some cookies together, humming and making a fair amount of mess when she heard the first whimper. She turned and was at Rin’s side in a moment, setting the bowl on the TV stand on her way passed. He was throwing his head this way and that, trapped in a nightmare. He cried out again, hugging the pillow to his chest. Then he threw it away from him, making Anisha duck to avoid having her career end then and there. 

He started tearing his shirt apart as Anisha called his name over and over. There appeared to be no effect as he managed to tear his shirt apart. He threw his arms around his head as he started to scream, starting to slip off the cushions. Anisha watched in shock and indecision. The red scars stood out painfully on his chest, perfectly outlining the symbol of the villain Cancer. Rin was reliving his night spent being tortured by the evil scaleon. He always made it seem that it was just a bit of pain and some mental games, but it was obviously a lot more than that.

Anisha put her naturally cold hands over the scars, making him gasp in shock. His eyes flung open suddenly and he shivered, staring at her in absolute confusion. Anisha pulled him the rest of the way off the couch and held him in her arms, wings out and over him to make him feel more protected. 

“No more!” Rin sobbed, grabbing at Anisha’s wing membrane and shirt. She didn’t try to pull away when he accidentally caught a handful of her long hair. “No more! Please!!”

Anisha rocked him back and forth, whispering soothing words in his ears in all the languages she knew. Rin sobbed and sobbed, hands resting in his hair as Anisha sung a song from her first world, weaving magic into the words to help in calming him down.

He fell silent, releasing only a few hiccups and shivering as the spell worked. Even after he fell asleep in her arms, Anisha did not move. She managed to turn on a quiet movie, a favorite of Rin’s and was found by Laurance a couple of hours later when he came back from a job.

Prompt #6 - Self Doubt

The first rays of sunlight always had a tendency of revealing that which was unseen. It had been hours since she’d woken but Alysia had remained unmoved. Wrapped up in the comfort of the sheets, the hyur stared aimlessly up at the ceiling. The merchants began to set up their stalls out on the street and the birds stirred from their nests, adding their sweet song to the noise. Another day to thrive and live. 

Small particles floated in the wide bands of light that poured in through the windows. Alysia raised a hand and watched as they evaded her touch; ever moving in the small fluctuations of air pressure as her fingers spun and wiggled. No matter how hard she may try, she would never catch them. Every attempt left her empty handed, grasping nothing. If she hadn’t been in such a sullen mood, it might not even bothered her. However, now it just seemed to be an ill-conceived analogy for her sadness. Her clenched hand fell beside her as she turned her cheek into the softness of the pillow. There was nothing there beside her but an empty space in her bed. All those lovers who didn’t even fathom how lucky they were just to have a warm body to sleep beside. Someone to share their dreams and hold them through their nightmares. 

Alysia was not lacking in friendships. Their companionship meant the world to her, but they could not provide her the small happiness of waking up next to the person who held her heart and seeing them laid bare under the first rays of sunlight.  Loneliness, no matter how brightly the sun shone in the sky, cast dark shadows of self doubt. Would she ever find the joy of loving and being loved in turn, or would she forever be destined to sleep alone with only her thoughts of inadequacy to keep her company.?

- There is only one night on Earth when all kind of creatures walk among people, when the thin veil of the underworld disappear and the gates of hell open wide. One night when everything's possible.

On the end of October, as promised, a witch come back to visit. Killed by a mistake, was able in the arts, could cure any terrible disease and, by any means, was gentle.

Had a lover, a secret one, that left heartbroken and soon died of sorrow.

This night was the only one when both could meet again, and every year that promise was fulfilled for the rest of their, now immortal, life.
