sad about sofya kovalevskaya, if she had lived to like 75 (to the end of the revolution/civil war) instead of dying at 41 she could have been a professor of mathematics in her homeland
#iso.txt#she died in 1891 so 26 years before the revolution#context: she was the first woman to have a phd and first woman to have a professorship#but it was not in russia bc it was not allowed there

man not to vent my academic ennui on main but as another academic year dawns I'm really questioning some basic things about why I should stay in the game
#i've come too far to not get the phd so this dissertation has to get finished but the landscape of higher education in general feels gloomy#and idk man. lately i just want a stable job where i can live with my partner in a place we both like and can count on a paycheck#and i really don't want to have to leave california and send both of us god knows where for a 2 year visiting professorship or something#and have that called success

i wish i was less nitpicky about terminology in books but why is the book i am currently reading trying to convince me this character is an "adjunct professor" in cambridge in the early twentieth century
#american academic terminology is not universal#nor would all of these characters be Professor [name]#most of them will be lecturers and they will be Dr [name]#unless they have a professorship specifically#néide has opinions about books#this book is also back projecting a very modern academic attitude to citations which i do not think people in 1909 cared about#actually to be honest in 1909 I'm not sure most of these characters would have doctorates#they're way more recent a phenomenon than people realise#i am willing to accept that due to this being a fantasy novel it is possible this female character could be a lecturer#but i would be surprised if she completed a phd in 1900#considering the first cambridge phd was approved in 1921#AGAIN I SHOULD NOT CARE ABOUT THIS. BUT.

feedback from my academic supervisor has me doubting if I should try and continue working with him as a group leader
#i think the app will be submitted today#unless he got mad about the work and pulled the plug on that#which would be a uniquely shitty thing for him to do#but i'm just like#do i want to work with this guy for another 4.5 years??#constantly seeking approval and constantly being told that I'm not up to scratch??#or should i just say fuckit and apply for professorships in the UK/US after extending my postdoc another year?#basically anywhere that isn't with this guy?#i should really milk him for glory#bc he's a golden boy#fuck i hate this

A lot of rats had super intellectual parents. I did too: my dad preferred yes and crimson to acdc and creedence
#unironically when EAs are comparing eachothers upbringings by saying what rank of university their parents had professorships at#im like “i grew up with prog rock”#“so you could say my parents were pretty smart”

okay, this is prompted by the presidential obsessions poll post, but I'm going bonkers over a random contradiction
in Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs, he seems quite certain he could've become a math professor or at least an assistant to one if it wasn't for that whole military thing:
meanwhile the West Point Department of Mathematics page has this blurb
and on the third hand, everything else I search on the topic suggests that mathematics was one of the few non-equestrian topics that Grant did well in at West Point.
So like, what's the truth here? Is there a math professor at West Point with a grudge and/or a urge to dunk to make a funny joke on the hiring page, or did Grant exaggerate his own abilities and all other sources take it for granted he was being honest?? Are there still records of his grades somewhere???
#is there a relevant paragraph in chernow i've forgotten#also i guess at this time and context assistant professors generally refer to assistants to a professor and not the rank...or are they the#same thing#right before the mexican war he claims to his fiancee he has a professorship offer from a college in ohio so presumably he did not suck ass#currently leaning towards math department making a funny#jaggedwolf rambles#jaggedwolf gets derailed by this#jaggedwolf wants to know which years he supposedly applied to teach#ulysses grant#mine

it's insanely ridiculous that I can't even adjunct English with only a master's degree
#feeling bitter#the only job I'm any good for is teaching#but the academic job market is fucked up as hell#and there's no way I'd survive working the hours public school teachers have#if I get a phd#I wanna be able to do more than just adjunct#bc if the only job I can get with one is an adjunct professorship#it's not worth it#fml

ultimatum
As a family attorney, Will hears the word ultimatum probably once a day.
People are always giving each other ultimatums, and Will – ever the excellent lawyer – takes copious notes about them.
I told him if he didn’t break it off with his dental hygienist, I’d leave him.
She either got rid of the cat or else!
If he continued to stay at his karate lessons all night, and never came home, then I told him there wouldn’t be a home for him to go back to.
Will writes it all down. He remembers it all. He carries the words with him like songs he doesn’t like. In between Harry Nilsson singing “Without You” and that secret song from the High School Musical soundtrack that Emma used to think was brilliant, he hears spouses saying terrible things about each other. Sometimes he agrees with the client. Sometimes he just thinks about how the money will help his girls.
Everything is all about his girls, even after all this time.
Everything is about Elenore. Seeing her smile after so many years of crying. Talking to her about the latest bullshit Disney’s cooked up for Star Wars. Swapping memories about law school and taking it on the chin when she reminds him she’s better because she went to Columbia. Will doesn’t dare remind her that he’s the reason she was able to get there. His time. His love. That’s all free, and she never needs to feel obligated to him.
Everything is about Emma. Listening to her talk about her theories for her dissertation. Holding her when the prospect of the job market and moving away from New York makes her cry. Ordering her dinner and leaving little Love, Dad notes in the bags. Emma is one of the most fascinating women he’s ever known, and everyday, she finds more ways to impress the hell out of him. Will can hardly believe he’s allowed anywhere near her.
Everything is about Veronica. Saving up money to help her go to college. Listening to her gush about the different colleges she wants to go to. Dreaming with her about Harvard and Yale even though they know it’s all a long shot, a crap shoot. Veronica is beautiful and wonderful, and Will makes sure to tell her she’s a miracle of a granddaughter. If her father can’t remind her that she’s special, her grandfather sure as hell can.
And everything is about Lucy, the woman who requires no ultimatums, the woman Will is lucky enough to have known since she was a girl. Not the other half of him, but the whole that makes life worth living. She’s it.
“Do you think that’s why we’re still together?” Lucy asks one Saturday morning over croissants and orange juice. “Because of all the horror stories you hear at your job? You figure, like, ‘At least it’s not as bad as that?’”
Will shakes his head.
“More than that,” he says. “More than I can say.”
Lucy conceals her smile behind a long sip of orange juice, and Will thinks about all the words in his head.
(part of @nosebleedclub september challenge -- day xxiv!)
#drabble#writeblr#ch: will o'connor#ch: lucy callaghan#ship: c'est la vie say the old folks#year: 2023#i'm so behind but in my defense i have been working on cover letters for assistant professorships lol

We gotta stop thinking people are smart and respectable just because they have a job and exist in polite society.
and we def gotta stop thinking that people with "intellectual" jobs are necessarily smart or good people.
with that said... i can't wait until one of the monsters from grad school become a "respected" philosopher and i can join other people in spilling the tea on them
#because i definitely have receipts of these people being bigots#personal#grad school#having a degree doesn't make you better or smarter than anyone#honestly most of my peers were so bigoted or filled with implicit bias that they were unwilling to reconsider their beliefs/words/actions#I think it is dangerous to give people like that professorships or a platform unless they are willing to have epistemic humilty

1) since when can faculty take credit for student militancy lmfao? we couldn’t even get u holier-than-thou bitches to join a dining hall rally on a good day!
2) the department u stayed at for two years happily expelled their only palestinian colleague so they could secure their prestigious promotions. and disavowed ethnic studies activism in the same breath! and you refused to listen to students warning abt it!
#i forgive her for hiring one of the most evil administrators who made my life hell (kinda)#(both her and the evil white admin treated staff like shit so!)#but these academics will find secret loopholes to fire their own kin so they can get an extra zionist-endowed professorship#and then brag to you that they ‘ethically’ refuse to exploit contingent faculty (bc they fired them all)#sorry im a hater! ive never read this woman’s research#so if ur in latinadad studies don’t come for me! i just think she’s goofy as hell for rting!
