Defunding prevention and climate change drive rebound of malaria in Peru
Within four years of the programs being de-funded, malaria rates where right back where they started, according to a study appearing online in the April edition of The Lancet Regional Health Americas. The rebound in malaria was driven not only by the removal of prevention programs, but also by climate change, the authors said. Average temperatures in Peru have risen a half-degree Centigrade in the last 20 years and higher minimum temperatures and more intense rainfalls with flooding were shown to drive the resurgence of the mosquito-borne disease. The Project for Malaria Control in Andean Border Areas (PAMAFRO) operated from 2006 to 2011 with support from the Global Fund, resulting in sustained and significant reductions in malaria incidence across the Loreto district of Peru. The program had four main interventions: Distributing insecticidal bed nets and insecticide re-treatment kits; improving diagnostics with new microscopes and rapid detection kits; distributing anti-malarial drugs and training health care workers to use them; and promoting community responses to mosquito breeding areas. The incidence of Plasmodium vivax malaria declined from 43 cases per 1000 people per year to 10 cases. Plasmodium falciparum cases declined from 14 per 1000 per year to just 2.5 cases. “Unfortunately, malaria control has been deprioritized in Latin America, with many international organizations and government agencies reducing funding commitments. The result has been predictable — rapid increases in malaria incidence have followed funding withdrawals throughout the region.” said senior study author William Pan, the Elizabeth Brooks Reid and Whitelaw Reid Associate Professor of global environmental health at Duke. There had been 345,000 malaria cases across the region served by PAMAFRO in the year before the intervention, and just 175,800 in the final year of the program. By 2015, cases had returned to pre-intervention levels of 361,000 cases. The study’s statistics showed some variability in the program’s effectiveness based on geography and which species of parasite was most prevalent. Malaria transmission proved tougher to root out in border areas at the edges of the intervention program and along river systems, where human migrations occur. “There is a preponderance of evidence showing that sustained funding for malaria control is more cost effective than responding to resurgent transmission events, yet this fact seems to go unrecognized by funders,” added lead author Dr. Mark Janko and faculty member in the Duke Global Health Institute. Globally, between 2000 and 2020, malaria reduction programs like this pushed the disease rate down from 81 cases per 1000 people per year to 59 per 1000 per year. The World Health Organization estimates that a lasting commitment to continue pushing malaria back would need about US $5.6 billion per year, but funding in 2019 was just US $3 billion. “We’re showing that these programs clearly have worked and what human and environmental factors they need to address,” Pan said. “Malaria elimination is definitely possible in the Americas, but we must have global commitments and support immediately, before climate change pushes this goal out of reach.” Funding for this study came from NASA, NIH, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bonus chapter for ‘Lady of thorns and swords.’
Ash finally reveals one of his secrets.
...
Drusilla had a long and tiring day at the Academy on Three arrows farm. There were endless lessons of downworlder studies, histories of the clave and weapons’ training. Rune abilities was her final class of the day, and she almost fell asleep while sitting next to Thais, who kept nudging her awake. Professor Whitelaw was displeased and as punishment, he had given Drusilla extra homework to complete for the next day.
This had put her in a bad mood.
That was until Ash, who sat behind her in class, had passed her a note. She knew that if he attempted to speak to her instead, they would have both got into trouble.
The note read, ‘meet me on the rooftop of the Academy at 6pm.’
When class had ended and everyone started packing their stationary, Drusilla turned around in her seat and gave Ash a suspicious look, ‘what are you up to?’
She watched as his green gaze met hers and smiled, ‘just trust me, ok?’
After class Drusilla had spent time with her friends Thais, Sam and Olivia in the library. Although, they did little studying. She returned to her room, using the excuse of completing Professor Whitelaw’s homework. But instead, took off her blouse, fished for the warmest sweater inside her closet and put it on.
The sweater was coloured a dark green.
Drusilla than made her way to the rooftop in haste. With every footstep, she could feel her heart pounding. Why had Ash asked her to meet him?
As soon as she reached the roof of the Academy, she took her time to enjoy the view of the sunset. The sky was filled with an amalgamation of different colours: blue, orange and pink. It made her think of how perfect the scene was for one of Julian’s paintings.
As the sky grew darker, she wondered where Ash was. That was until she heard a big metal door, the entrance to the rooftop, open and close behind her.
She turned around and saw Ash walking towards her in light footsteps. She realised that he had also changed. He was no longer wearing the casual sweater and trousers he had hours ago, but was instead in shadowhunter gear. The clothes made his pale hair appear more striking, and the night sky made his eyes a darker shade of green.
Drusilla put her hands on her hips and looked at Ash accusingly, ‘you’re late.’
‘I’m sorry, but I had a few things to take care of, including changing into gear,’ he replied.
‘Why did you change your clothes? You’re not planning on hunting demons all night, are you? I’m not dressed for that,’ Drusilla said.
‘Erm, not exactly. I changed because I had something to show you. I can’t do it in my regular clothes,’ Ash said.
Drusilla looked at him in an odd way, ‘what is it you want to show me?’
‘It’s better if I demonstrate rather than tell you,’ Ash said.
Drusilla nodded and waited patiently.
She watched as Ash got down on his left knee, spread his hands out in front of him and took a long breath. She resisted the urge to ask if what he wanted to show her was a ring, but knew he was trying to concentrate.
A few seconds later, she saw the slow formation of black feathered wings behind him. The wings began to expand until they reached their maximum size, when Drusilla saw the ends were tipped with a rich silver colour.
Her mouth was now opened agape. Ash had wings. No other shadowhunter had wings, or the ability to fly.
Ash finally stood up and met Drusilla’s eyes with his nervous gaze, ‘welll, what do you think?’
‘They’re beautiful,’ she replied as she walked closer to him.
Ash gave a short laugh, ‘I thought you would be afraid.’
Drusilla shook her head, ‘I’m not, but how is this possible?’
‘I’m a half shadowhunter and half faerie, Drusilla. My blood has an increased amount of demon blood, inherited from my father. The Unseelie King had performed unspeakable dark magic on me. It’s not something I understand either,’ he replied.
Drusilla was lost for words.
Ash continued, ‘I had to change into gear, because if I wore anything else, the clothes would rip during the process of the transformation. The gear has been tailored to accommodate the wings.’
‘I understand,’ Drusilla said as she smiled at him, ‘can I touch them?’
Ash nodded slowly as Drusilla brought her right hand up to caress his wings. They felt so light and soft beneath her fingertips, that they gave her a sense of comfort.
As Drusilla lowered her hand, Ash moved away, towards the edge of the roof. She stared after him with curiosity.
He glanced back at her and smiled softly, ‘would you like to join me on a little adventure?’
She gave him a terrified look, ‘are you serious? I haven’t flown before.’
‘I kind of gathered that,’ he said.
She walked closer to the roof’s edge and stood beside him, ‘is it even safe?’
‘Of course, it is, you’ll be safe with me,’ he said.
Drusilla was about to refuse but remembered something Mark had told her. The idea that within every human heart there was a desire to fly, to defy gravity.
She nodded and braced herself.
Drusilla closed her eyes as Ash moved to stand behind her and placed his arms around her waist in a tight grip, ‘I won’t let you go, ok?’
She didn’t reply.
Suddenly, Ash lifted both of them high above the ground, and Drusilla screamed aloud in both excitement and fear while she kept her eyes shut.
‘Shh Drusilla, there’s nothing to be afraid of. You can open your eyes,’ she heard him say.
She shook her head, ‘no.’
‘You’re missing the view,’ he said
Drusilla opened her eyes slowly. She saw the Academy below them, the surrounding forests and the pathway to the lake. They had flown above the ground, yet it wasn’t as high as Drusilla expected.
She glanced up at him, ‘where to next?’
‘You’ll have to wait and see,’ Ash replied.
They flew together as Drusilla appreciated the view. She knew nothing had changed, yet the landscape looked a lot different from a higher vantage.
A few moments had passed, and they had already left the farm. Ash surprisingly flew very quickly, and they had arrived within the main city of New York.
They saw Central park, which was lit by lamplights to guide dog owners who were walking their pets. The second landmark they passed was Times Square and it was illuminated by many blinding lights. Drusilla had remembered the times she spent sitting and watching the fireworks with her family during new years’ eve. Next, they stood and observed the view from the Empire State building. The city was alight in all its glory.
New York never slept.
After hovering over the noisy traffic on Brooklyn Bridge, Drusilla had decided they should finally return to the Academy, and Ash obliged.
This was not before they glided along the water’s edge, giving her the opportunity to place an index finger into the surface and ripples of water emerged behind them as they made their way back.

Artificial trees capture new bird species on candid camera
Capture 4661, Sculpture Camera. Molonglo Life. http://molonglo.life/#!/capture/4661
More
An experiment from The Australian National University (ANU) using artificial trees has attracted birds and other wildlife never before seen in a damaged Canberra landscape—catching them on camera at the same time.
The experiment is a collaboration with the ACT Parks and Conservation Service and uses a series of power poles and translocated dead trees erected in landscape under regeneration.
The ANU researchers saw a four-fold increase in bird species on five recently erected power-poles. There was also a seven-fold increase in bird species across five re-purposed dead trees.
In a separate project on the same site, the birds were captured on motion-sensitive cameras hidden in the artificial structures, with the footage providing a public database for species activity.
Associate Professor Philip Gibbons from the ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society wanted to test whether artificial structures could be used to provide a home for birds and other wildlife when mature trees were cut down for residential and other development.
He says the artificial trees work better than he “could have ever hoped for.”
“Even if we plant new trees elsewhere to replace those we knock down they take a century to mature and develop suitable habitats for birds and wildlife,” Associate Professor Gibbons said.
“Globally, mature trees are in decline and we’re going to see an absence of mature trees in some landscapes by the end of this century. So these artificial structures are really key to filling that gap to preserve the ecosystem.
“And from what we can see they work. Not only did they attract birds to the landscape, but they also provided a home for ladybirds, wood spiders and microbats.”
Associate Professor Gibbons said the artificial trees weren’t a “cure-all.”
“The structures can only do so much and we found 37 percent of bird species that live in mature forests did not venture into the artificial structures,” he said.
“We need to preserve as many mature trees as we can, continue to plant more new seedlings for the future and then raise these artificial structures if we are to mitigate this deficit of mature trees for future generations.
“At the end of the day, you can’t beat real trees. But they can take years to grow. So this is a great option in areas needing regeneration or while you wait for trees to mature.”
The study area, a 50-hectare site at Barrer Hill in the Molonglo Valley, has been set aside for regeneration to offset mature trees and other native vegetation cleared for new suburbs.
The final piece of the restoration project was a “living art sculpture” created from a 400-year old yellow box tree cut down in a nearby suburb and re-erected in the offset site.
Dr. Mitchell Whitelaw from the ANU School of Art worked with American architect Joyce Hwang from University of Buffalo and Darren Le Roux of ACT Parks to install motion-sensitive cameras into the tree-sculpture.
They’ve captured images of more than 23 bird and animal species using the structures including a peregrine falcon, nankeen kestrel and tawny frogmouth.
More common species such as crimson and eastern rosellas, starlings, yellow-tailed black cockatoos, galahs, red wattlebirds, willie wagtails, red-rumped parrots, kookaburras, bats and marsupials are also using the structures.
Dr. Whitelaw’s database of pictures and videos is available at http://molonglo.life/#!/
People can watch and contribute to the content by tagging and identifying species.
“As well as some delightful and beautiful images, we’ve caught footage of a currawong raiding a starling’s nest. This is the sort of action in nature people just don’t get to see every day,” Dr. Whitelaw said.
“The database is a real-time record of the restoration of an ecosystem. We want people to feel connected to these public places and the wildlife in them.”

Lady of thorns and swords - part four
This is a short story I’ve written. I am open to any feedback, and requests of writing prompts from ‘The shadowhunter chronicles.’
...
Three arrows farm - 2015
The day had gone by quickly and the stars were hanging in the night sky. Most of the students had gathered in the large cafeteria of the academy, ate their last meal of the day and said goodnight to each other before heading to their rooms. But Drusilla had stayed behind and remained seated on a table with her friends. She sat beside Thais, and across them were Sam and Olivia. They were engaged in what Thais called ‘juicy gossip’ about the ‘new boy’.
Ash’s arrival had been a shock to most of the students, and the rest of the day had gone by in a blur. Drusilla could hardly remember anything they had learnt in the five classes she had, because her mind was still occupied with the mysterious arrival of the silver haired boy. Unfortunately, they only had one class together, so she could not bombard him with the many questions she had.
‘You know, I thought the entire strand of the Lovelace family was gone,’ Olivia said before she took a sip of her milkshake.
Olivia was a very talkative girl with a petite figure and had blonde hair which she often wore in a ponytail, even when she wasn’t training.
‘His name isn’t what’s the most mysterious thing about him though,’ Sam began, ‘we don’t usually have new shadowhunters appear out of nowhere, especially those with faerie blood.’
Sam was wearing one of his denim jackets and his dark hair was sporting a tragic style. He was nearly finished with eating his roast potatoes, which he praised the cook for and often begged for the recipe.
‘Don’t be insensitive!’ Thais chided, ‘you know Drusilla has half-faerie siblings!’
‘I didn’t mean anything by it,’ replied Sam. ‘You have to admit it’s a little strange.’
‘The mystery of Ash Lovelace,’ Drusilla drawled, ‘honestly, can’t we talk about anything else?’
‘Oh come on Drusilla.’ Olivia said, ‘the arrival of the new student is the most excitement the academy has had in months.’
‘I’ve heard that he’s been given his own room. He doesn’t share with another student,’ said Sam.
‘You’re just jealous that you’ve been cursed with an unfortunate roommate,’ Olivia retorted with a smile.
‘I’m not!’ Sam looked disappointed but than his expression faltered, ‘ok, maybe a little. But who could blame me? Jacob is a lousy roommate who doesn’t clean up after himself, and don’t even get me started on his lack of interest in the culinary arts.’
Drusilla resisted the urge to roll her eyes and saw the same look of exasperation reflected in both Thais and Olivia’s face. This was a conversation they usually had to endure around Sam. He was never quiet about his disapproval of his roommate.
‘We’re going off topic here,’ Thais said, ‘do you think his parents are alive? Does he have any siblings?
Drusilla already knew the answer to this, but she replied anyway, ‘I don’t know Thais, maybe you could ask him tomorrow during rune studies.’
Thais scoffed, ‘he doesn’t seem like the most approachable person, if you ask me.’
‘Maybe Sam could win him over with one of his famous grilled cheese sandwiches,’ Olivia contributed.
Sam smiled at that and said, ‘Isn’t it weird that he didn’t join the rest of us for dinner?’
Drusilla could think of only one reason why Ash had not appeared in the cafeteria, or anywhere inside the academy, and that was because he was avoiding her.
‘I don’t think it is,’ said Thais, ‘I heard Ash is attending a meeting with a few teachers, including Professor Whitelaw.’
Drusilla’s ears perked, ‘a meeting about what?’
Thais sighed, ‘I don’t know Drusilla. All I’m aware of is, its going to last a long time.’
Drusilla than stood up in the most casual way she could muster to avoid looking suspicious, ‘I’m going to the library to study.’
Thais looked alarmed, ‘but Drusilla…’
‘I’ll see you later, don’t stay up waiting for me like you usually do,’ Drusilla said with haste.
She said goodbye to both Sam and Olivia, who looked bewildered at her sudden departure, and made her way to the cafeteria door.
Ash did not share his room with another student, and he was currently in a meeting.
This was her opportunity.

Fascism in TSC
That LoS is overtly politically charged in a way that makes it a pointed commentary (as many readers have pointed out) on the current trump administration, is blatantly obvious. as is the fact that cassie has elevated the language she’s using to narrate these storylines of conservative shadowhunters wanting to preserve the old ways of of shadowhunter supremacy in the shadow world: for the first time in 12 books she has published, we see the word ‘fascism’ explicitly appear in LoS.
and i say storylines because i’m interested in the way that this is actually a recurrent theme throughout cassie’s novels: sometimes at the centre of the story, and sometimes at its periphery, right-wing politics (and shadowhunters acting as oppressors) is a looming figure, most often manifest in the shape of the Clave. (sadly i can’t elaborate that much on how closely LoS is echoing real-life events with trump, as i’m not a US citizen, but i look forward to that meta from someone else). cassie has said, many times in the past, that cycle 1 of tmi, and valentine’s character specifically, was written to echo hitler’s principles and beliefs and the way he behaved as führer. i think it’s clear that this is being rewoven in TDA and certainly in the way the cohort are gradually gaining power. this is not just something that mirrors trump’s actions at the moment, but in fact right-wing activism and dictators rising to power internationally.
in CoG, we see clary make the alliance rune that brings shadowhunters and downworlders together, where they fight in battle and seemingly are at peace with one another. before LM begins, we see a new law being passed, officially allowing shadowhunters and downworlders to marry (ironic, of course, seeing as the main antagonists of the story are a shadowhunter and downworlder who couldn’t marry). then of course by LoS, we see the backlash against these progressive laws; how, in actual fact, everything clary attempted to do in CoG touched only a small fraction of the shadow world. there remains plenty of shadowhunters out there, such as the dearborns, who have leaped at the chance to get rid of liberalism, and those of the cohort, who have been emboldened by the dearborns’ rhetoric. what clary achieved in cycle 1 of TMI, is rewritten in LoS as a small victory -- not a lasting peace, but a temporary one.
but cassie is always equally interested in how uncomfortably inextricable good and evil are as well: characters who we consider to be paragons of goodness often end up related to other very questionable characters. robert lightwood is an interesting case here. originally a very disagreeable character who cheats on his wife and holds bigoted beliefs, we see him at the end of LoS as ‘mellowed’ and seemingly far more progressive and tolerant -- just before he is killed off. this underlines that, although robert lightwood was indeed an unpleasant character, as he stands in TDA as the inquisitor -- he is a far preferable option to what is waiting in the wings, ready to take his place. in the infernal devices, we see first hand (in a way that we don’t in TMI and TDA) in the york institute the ‘spoils’ of the days before the accords between downworlders and shaowhunters, when shadowhunters actively hunted and, apparently, carried out barbaric acts or torture and execution upon downworlders who they believed were an inferior race. aloysius starkweather, a man who proudly displays the trophies of dead downworlders in the york institute, turns out to be related to tessa, half-warlock (it also makes you wonder: if aloysius’ behaviour was commonplace, what did the shadow world look like before the 1800′s?). this echoes the way downworlders were exploited and experimented on by valentine in his quest to create the perfect shadowhunter in the circle era days. likewise, it’s often easy to forget, that clary’s father was valentine; that the man who raised jace was valentine; that they both (healthy or not) had a real bond with sebastian -- a character who, ideologically, departs from his father in that ideas of ‘purity’ (essentially ethnic cleansing) are unimportant to him; power, in its most malevolent and totalitarian form, is of paramount importance to him.
i think it’s clear that with robert’s death at the end of LoS (see how it parallels the way inquisitor aldertree, and before him, inquisitor herondale i.e. imogen whitelaw were killed -- being inquisitor in cassie’s books is kinda like being professor of the dark arts in HP; it’s a poisoned chalice), we’re seeing a power vacuum open up -- one that will likely be filled by either the dearborns or one of their puppets from the cohort. the new inquisitor will either likely force jia penhallow to their do their bidding, or eventually stage a coup. and once they’ve hijacked the clave completely, it will turn into a totalitarian state concerned with revoking all the liberal reforms that have come before it. do i think the eternal problem of the clave will be solved in QoAaD? no. quite simply, the clave is too large and complex an enemy to defeat in a single book; as cassie has hinted, this is what TWP will be centered around. interesting to think, though, how this final series of cassie’s is looking increasingly like it’s going to be a hybrid fantasy/dystopia series. i’m excited to see ty and kit stage a revolution in TWP.
