Professional Life: As I plan to work in a hospital, it is interesting to find the ways a hospital can improve its sustainability. A hospital can do this through buying food locally, changing waste protocol and saving water and energy. By supporting a large amount of people at one time, this can be challenging but not impossible.

Quote
Being a family means you are a part of something very wonderful. It means you will love and be loved for the rest of your life

professional, sustainable living: As a human development and family studies major, this quote explains why I believe pouring into families is important. Being an encouragement to families when they are enduring hardships is why I want to make an impact in a certain family’s lifestyle. By simply letting them know that family is a gift is the most sustainable way in improving their lifestyles for the better.

Professional life: Recreation is another part of the hospitality industry. The Walt Disney is moving towards more sustainable practices in their cruise ships, hotels, and parks. Some of their practices include renewable energy and getting rid of single use plastics. As a hospitality major student, I hope more theme parks become more environmentally friendly. Theme parks are constantly expanding in order to accommodate increasing demand.

Professional Life: This graphic is really great because it really breaks down and simplifies sustainability in nutrition. It shows people not only how to eat sustainably but also how to eat well for your body and health.
Some of the things that I plan on focusing from the graphic is eating locally and avoiding unnecessary packaging. I feel like I can accomplish both of these things in my life and in my career by purchasing my produce from farmers markets that don't use unnecessary packaging.

I think this article is so important for everyone to read. Committing to sustainable development is not easy and it will be a challenge for most companies, but it is possible. I think this article shows that making this commitment needs to be done by everyone, not just a couple of countries, companies, or people. It is going to be a group effort to truly change the way people live their lives and how companies produce products and services. I think having knowledge on how to provide more sustainable services and products will truly help set people aside when they enter their career field.

At some point in my career, I would like to work at a hospital and eventually a private practice. Regardless of where I work, I believe that implementing eco-friendly initiatives are important for the future of the healthcare system. From replicating “sponge cities” in China to reduce the amount of concrete in parking lots or rooftops, to using solar power, simple changes can have a great impact on the planet.

Professional Sustainability - Recycling
I was reading this article on Forbes and it was talking about how to make your business more sustainable. One of the way to make the business more sustainable was no surprise: recycling. This doesn’t come as a shock to me but what I really like is how they approached the topic of recycling and getting your employees to do it. Setting goals and rewards for them as a start and having them complete challenges like we used to do in middle school to keep up the competition. This seems like so much fun to me because not only would it keep our business sustainable but it would also keep up business moral and help form friendships. This seems like a great and fun idea to implement into my business to build up a fun habit of recycling in the office and maybe even start one at home!

Having an Event Sustainability Policy is for sure something I am going to take with me into my professional field. There will never be any change without people willing to speak up, and I know that I will make a point to ensure every event I plan is sustainable. And I really like the idea of having a policy that everyone knows about. It is important to be upfront about what exactly you expect from something and it is the same with events. Working together with everyone involved in an event will make for a more enjoyable & cohesive result.

Professional life: The graphic above, taken from an event management blog, describes some shocking statistics. I had no idea there was so much waste produced in one standard event! These statistics certainly put things into perspective for me. In my future career in the hospitality industry, I need to take care to eliminate as much waste production as possible in my events. It often only takes an intentional mindset and proactive thinking to make an event more sustainable.

I hope to work in a major city when I join the workforce. Knowing this, I can assume that there is likely high traffic, which accounts for high pollution in these areas. I will make it a personal goal to walk to and from work as much as possible to save from contributing to the pollution in the environment.

Professional Life: Tourism is also a big part of the Hospitality Industry. Hotels produce a lot of energy use, which causes pollution, as well as traveling. By adopting different methods for a more sustainable tourism industry across the globe, the carbon footprint left by tourists can be greatly reduced.

This TED talk does a great job of explaining the tradeoffs of building a sustainable home over a regular home or updating an existing home. It might seem better to use the buildings that already exist, but if the replacement is built sustainably, that energy lost can be regained in a matter of a few years.
