what does the grooming process look like for stellina and kep?
my 'process" for grooming is very much what i would call 'poor man's dog training':
get a silicone lick-mat
apply peanut butter very generously
slap that bad boy onto the front of the fridge/kitchen appliances at dog eye-level
groom while they're distracted
i start this process day 1 as puppies and continue it through their whole lives. should i actually be putting in the effort to actually train them to stand still and quietly for grooming without the need for food distraction? yes. do i? no i'm lazy.
or if you're asking about like, what grooming i'm actually doing:
hair: i do an all-over brush at least once a week (should do twice but again, lazy and not needed). takes like 20-30 mins. my 'schedule' for brushing is basically this:
red areas (behind ears, arm/legpits) are high-friction and very prone to matting. these you have to brush out at least once a week, no exceptions, or you will get mats. this is also very sensitive skin so it's good to desensitize them to brushing as much as you can.
yellow areas should be brushed at least once weekly to comb out any tangles and debris, but are less prone to matting.
and then the rest of them i'll brush through but that's about it, that part pretty much never tangles.
i normally just use a pin brush and slicker brush, and a metal comb for the yellow/red areas. sometimes an undercoat rake if they're very sheddy.
collies are 'dry' dogs - they don't really drool, and they don't have the oily waterproof coat that breeds like a lab or hound does, so they're naturally low-odor without much of a 'doggy' smell. i'll bathe every 4-8 weeks depending on what the weather's like and if their skin seems like it's getting cruddy. 2-3 times a year i'll take them to a groomer to have them do a 'deshed' treatment where they really blow out the undercoat, because this makes a huge difference in keeping them comfortable in the heat, and in how much hair i have to vacuum.
for stellina i've also been getting an outline trim (shortening up the yellow areas on the pic with long feathering) in spring and fall, it just keeps things cleaner and it makes a huge difference in the amount of time i have to spend brushing.
feet: i dremel nails every week, same PB-mat method as with brushing. every week is probably overkill but i think it's good desensitization and also i hate long nails on dogs so i'm a bit anal about it. collies tend to get long hair on the feet/between the pads, some people like the 'grinch feet' look but personally i fucking hate it so every 4-6 weeks i just take round-tip scissors and clean them up.
other: the rest i do as needed, e.g. if i see any wax/debris in the ears i'll do a clean with OTC ear cleaner and a cotton ball. one of stellina's eyes tends to be teary, so about once a week i take a warm washcloth and wipe them down to prevent tear stains. and then i vacuum my house weekly, sometimes every 2 weeks if it's not too bad.
honestly i'm writing a lot but what i've listed here is way less than 1 hour a week on average, collies IMO are not particularly high-grooming needs dogs (compared to, say, a doodle or OES that needs daily brushing and regular professional grooming). i find the grooming and hair totally manageable. i honestly prefer dealing with long hair because it tends to clump together on the ground, rather than short hairs that fly and scatter into everything. people tend to see roughs and go 'oh no way too much hair' but like, it is super manageable as long as you've got half an hour at some point each week to brush your dog. i'm very obsessive about my pets being 'neat' and i do fine.
sorry for the incredibly overly-long answer to your very simple ask lmao

Brief Personality: Not many people know the real Jonah. He has carefully crafted his personality over the past few hundred years in order to be the epitome of perfection. Kind, Generous, Empathetic. He wants nothing more than to help people, to be good. However underneath the mask, Jonah is incredibly lonely. He often feels like there is a glass wall between him and other people. The “real” Jonah, doesn’t react correctly, doesn’t have the proper emotions or thoughts. So he buries that within himself. Though, some have noticed his mask is slipping.
Brief Backstory:
Jonah was born as a french prince, the youngest out of four other brothers. He was much younger than the rest of his brothers, them being young men when he was born. This concerned Jonah's mother deeply as her other sons had playmates and other children to grow up with and Jonah would be all alone. She looked down at her son in his crib until she had an epiphany.
She took several ladies in waiting down to the local town's orphanage with her and she picked out a boy around her son's age. One of the women named him James. Queen Madeline decided that this will be her sons new playmate and took him back to the castle with her.
Jonah and James became inseparable. They shared the same bed, they would play together, eat together, basically do everything together. The queen's gambit actually worked spectacularly. They were best friends. Though she did regret it sometimes when Jonah would have the mother of all tantrums when James wasn't included in every single activity they were doing. But, it made Jonah happy and that's all that mattered to her.
One day, when Jonah was around 5 or 6, Jonah's father kissed his mother while saying goodbye. Jonah asked her about it as he was curious. She explained that is what married people do. Jonah, again confused asked what marriage was. His mother said that marriage is an inseparable bond, someone you are with forever. She also explained weddings and other boring stuff like that.
Jonah nodded, and went off to "go play". and by go play, he means go be a little rascal. Jonah snuck into his parents bedroom and climbed up on a chair. He began to rummage through his mothers jewelry box. The little thief found a beautiful ring and stuffed it in his pockets before making a quick getaway.
Jonah ran his little legs over to James, finding him in the library where he normally was and he knelt down and proposed to James. James, of course said yes and the two of them ran through the castle and to Jonah's mother. Jonah explained that he needed a wedding URGENTLY. it was VERY important.
Thankfully, his mother found this amusing despite the time period and decided to indulge them. She set up a crowd of their collective stuffed animals, and officiated a little "wedding" for the two of them. She even took one of her old necklace chains and fashioned the ring into a necklace, since James hands were far too small to wear the ring normally.
She figured, that they had no idea what the hell this meant so might as well let them have fun.
The rest of their childhood went without much incident, the two of them just learning and playing with one another. Until the two boys turned into tweens about 11 or 12. They were starting to get a little rebellious as tweens often do. One day during a boring royal event, the two of them snuck out of the castle and onto the grounds.
They ran up to a nearby pond that was on the property and they both decided to go swimming. They jump into the water. Jonah is a natural born swimmer, however.. James.. was not.. while Jonah and him were having fun, Jonah got distracted by some guards coming and trying to find him and James. He swam deeper into the water to hide, and when he came back up. He realized.. James was ?̴̡̖̦̼̜̺̰̈́̀̿̀́́͂̋͝͝?̴̛͔͕͙͉͓̙̞͖̱̉͌̊͐̚͜?̴̧̰̭͉̺͙͉̰̯̦̊̇̄̑̄̏̑̄̏͆͑͝?̷̛͈̦͖̲̫̬̔͌̽̇͑̎͐͗͜͠͠͠?̷̼̼͓̖̬̐̓̇?̴̨̧̣̼̘̝͈̰͉̞̅̐̇͌͠?̶͖̬̖̟̱̰͖̹̺̍̿̈́̆͋̃̍?̴̡̛͙̫̬̹͍̳̮̮͍̲̱̔͂͊͆̅̄̾̿̕͜͜͠?̴̛̱̥̖̰̫̖̝̥̝̈́̑̈́͂́̍̔̌̆̔͐͘̚?̴̧̘͍̙͈̯̝̻̝͙̟̹͚̺̂̐̀͗̇̄͝?̵̧̪͔̼̜̤̹͐?̷̯͍̰̪̣̘͈̘̥̐̉̿̾̽̓̂̐̊̐̂̊͑̅̅ͅ

Jonah, began to sob into James. Up in the sky, the moon covered the sun causing an eclipse. The water from the pond moved forwards, surrounding James and Jonah in a shallow pool. The water glowing a bright blue around them and, like a miracle.

The moon moved past the sun, returning everything to normal. James was very confused as he didn't even remember what had happened. But he hugged Jonah back either way. He picks James up and brings him back to the castle.
The two grow up more, now being around 16. Jonah has been learning how to paint and do the arts, as well as learning how to swordfight. Him and James will practice for hours on in just sparring with one another. The two of them quite enjoy "fighting" and they're both quite equally good at it.
There is a war going on between his father's kingdom and some others. It's quite vicious and things have been tense around the castle. Jonah's older brothers are helping their father the best they can however none of them are exactly good at strategy or battle tactic. Which is causing a lot of arguments between them and their father.
Jonah and James one day decide to visit the war room, where they find the king screaming at Jonah's brothers. Their bad call had caused an entire army to die, once again and he was getting sick and tired of them all being idiots. They all storm out of the room for a moment to cool off, leaving Jonah and James alone in the room.
James looks at the giant chess board in the middle of the room, looking at the battle strategy. Jonah couldn't really make heads or tails of it, he was always more of an artist than a military man. James however moved some pieces around in order to make a better formation before stepping back.
Jonah's father came back into the room, and looked at the board. He looked at Jonah and thought that his son had done it instead of James. Something.. clicks in the kings mind before he dismisses the two boys.
A few weeks later, The king summons Jonah into the war room again. He tells him that it is a shame that he is the youngest when he has so much potential to be a great leader. Jonah.. didn't exactly agree but nodded anyway to be polite. His father brushed some hair out of Jonah's face. "You want to make me proud, right?" The king said.
"Of course." Jonah replied.. nervously.
"Why don't you become my second in command so to speak? Your brothers are not exactly... the best at this sort of thing. I need someone like you to help me."
And of course, Jonah wouldn't say no to something like that. Being able to help his father, to actually get attention from him would be amazing. Him and his father never really had much of a connection due to Jonah being a bit soft. If he could prove to him that he also had value, Jonah thought that would be swell.
Jonah's father and him spent a lot more time together, growing closer and closer. Jonah despite not being the one who originally messed with the board, was actually pretty good at strategy. Most of his plans worked and the ones that didn't, his father would ?̴̡̖̦̼̜̺̰̈́̀̿̀́́͂̋͝͝?̴̛͔͕͙͉͓̙̞͖̱̉͌̊͐̚͜?̴̧̰̭͉̺͙͉̰̯̦̊̇̄̑̄̏̑̄̏͆͑͝?̷̛͈̦͖̲̫̬̔͌̽̇͑̎͐͗͜͠͠͠?̷̼̼͓̖̬̐̓̇?̴̨̧̣̼̘̝͈̰͉̞̅̐̇͌͠?̶͖̬̖̟̱̰͖̹̺̍̿̈́̆͋̃̍?̴̡̛͙̫̬̹͍̳̮̮͍̲̱̔͂͊͆̅̄̾̿̕͜͜͠?̴̛̱̥̖̰̫̖̝̥̝̈́̑̈́͂́̍̔̌̆̔͐͘̚?̴̧̘͍̙͈̯̝̻̝͙̟̹͚̺̂̐̀͗̇̄͝?̵̧̪͔̼̜̤̹͐?̷̯͍̰̪̣̘͈̘̥̐̉̿̾̽̓̂̐̊̐̂̊͑̅̅ͅ give him a pat on the back. You can't win them all after all.
His brothers kept getting in the way though of his progress. The lot of them didn't really take Jonah seriously. His dad did though, and that's all that mattered. Him and his dad would stay up late at night and ?̴̡̖̦̼̜̺̰̈́̀̿̀́́͂̋͝͝?̴̛͔͕͙͉͓̙̞͖̱̉͌̊͐̚͜?̴̧̰̭͉̺͙͉̰̯̦̊̇̄̑̄̏̑̄̏͆͑͝?̷̛͈̦͖̲̫̬̔͌̽̇͑̎͐͗͜͠͠͠?̷̼̼͓̖̬̐̓̇?̴̨̧̣̼̘̝͈̰͉̞̅̐̇͌͠?̶͖̬̖̟̱̰͖̹̺̍̿̈́̆͋̃̍?̴̡̛͙̫̬̹͍̳̮̮͍̲̱̔͂͊͆̅̄̾̿̕͜͜͠?̴̛̱̥̖̰̫̖̝̥̝̈́̑̈́͂́̍̔̌̆̔͐͘̚?̴̧̘͍̙͈̯̝̻̝͙̟̹͚̺̂̐̀͗̇̄͝?̵̧̪͔̼̜̤̹͐?̷̯͍̰̪̣̘͈̘̥̐̉̿̾̽̓̂̐̊̐̂̊͑̅̅ͅ gossip about his brothers. The king over the coming months explained to himạ̴̢̛̜͂̌̆̀̋̑̉̋͝͠ ̴͓̯̑̈͗̉̃͒̒̚ṕ̷̮̣̣͈̫̤̅̀̈̔͑͌͛͘ľ̶̡̛̥͖̮̪͚̟͉̠̤͎̊̃́̀̉́̋̆̾̚ă̶̡̜̤̗̖͓͔̦̥̼̣͈̜̞͚̚n̴̨̛̍̔͐̾͑̂. Obviously, he couldn't just make Jonah the heir. Birth order succeeds intelligence and actual talent to rule a country. So the king told Jonah to ?̴̡͕͍̭̭̝̣͖̼̭̞͙̺̳̖̇͝?̷̧̙̟̭̥̰̥̱̭̾̊̅͑̓̾̏̈͋̑́̕̚̚͜?̷̯͇͖͇̳͔͓͖̜̼͖̖̼̻̬͌̂̇́͐́͑̎͘?̶̛͔̰̦̓̎̂̆̄̎̄̈̀͘̕͠͠?̸̧̪̩͖̱̣̱̠̠͔̬̀͐͗̈̋̔̊̎͘͝͠͠?̸̯͔͔̙̞̦̹̱̫̩͙̘̜̙̙̽́̏͊̊͘. When Jonah was around 17, all the court could talk about was marriage. There were several ladies of the court who were fawning over him. However Jonah never seemed interested in any woman. Most people believed he was just reserved. Every party his mother and father would throw for him to find a wife, he would just sneak off to the rose garden with James.
In Jonah's mind, he already had a wife. He didn't need anyone else besides him. James however was a bit more practical. He did genuinely try and attempt to get Jonah at least a woman he could be friends with so the others wouldn't grow suspicious of the two of them. Despite Jonah's many protests.
His mother informs him that a specific kingdom has offered a meeting with their daughter. Jonah begrudgingly agreed after James pushed him to at least try to meet with her. A few weeks later, a quite beautiful woman arrived, a Duchess from a neighboring country named Dahlia. They exchanged pleasantries however her ladies in waiting wouldn't quite let Jonah anywhere near her to speak with her.
James followed Jonah around to sort of, match the vibe the Duchess was putting out. The group of them would walk around the castle together in awkward silence. It was so. terrible. Jonah eventually lead the group of them to the rose gardens, where he s̴̞͇̤̰̗̗͖̭̥̍̀̒̊͋͑̚͠t̷̮̻̭̤̩͔̆̓̋ǎ̷̡̛͎͊̈́̓̈́͐̚͘ŕ̷̡̨̪̤̗͚́̍̓̋͂̓́̽̔̇͑̕͠e̴͍̰̖̥̺͉̯͗d̸̨̧̛̬̯̪̭̳̳̹̝̦̗̘̺̤̑́̽̓̚͠͠ ̶̮̺͚̜͕̲͓̜̱̬̔̐̓̾͜͠͝ͅa̵̡͈͖̮̼͓̅̌̏̐̈́̕̚t̴̨̢̝̬͇͔̙̆͋̾͐͊̃̓̿̋̂̉̍͂́̕ ̶̢̢̯̹̣͈̦̜̥͍̹̞͔͒̉̀͒̀͐̉̚͜t̶̢̙̹͕̬̖̭̩͙͓̑̆͂̾͊̍̄͆̕̚͠ͅh̷̨̰̭̩̭͚͈͓̱̗̪̺͉̣̭̽́̉̔͝ę̵̛̛͉̻̍͗̒̋́͑̎̀̽͑͆͘͝ ̶̨͎̜̲̥̹̦̯͔͎͖̗̱̇r̴̨̛̥͚̩̙̖̜͕̟̤̮̳̒́̾̌̈́̂̽̄̔̌̀͆̌͘ǫ̴͚͕̫͚̱̘͙͍͙̟͗ŝ̴̹̒͐͐́̒͆͗̇̏͝e̸̡̘̫̭̳͓̖̺̜̬̝̜̖̔̎͆́́͑͛̿͝ş̷̡̡̬̥̮̙͉̜̙͔̗̈́̀.̷̨̳̭̼̣̈́̾̀̈̒͂͆͗̉̐̑͐̉̈́̈

He stared down at the bandages on his hand.
"Are you listening, Jonah?" The king said.
"Oh." He shook his head, looking up at his father. "Sorry. I got distracted, what did you say?"
"People are starting to talk, Jonah." His father took a sip of his drink as he paced slightly around the room.
"We could give you the most beautiful, intelligent woman in the entire world and you would still run off with the servant boy." His father said, coldly.
"I... mean.. I've known him for my entire life.. He's my best friend.. I just sort of default to his company above someone I don't really know.." He sighed. "She was barely even speaking to me."
"You always find an excuse, Jonah. It's always something with you."

Within the next few weeks, Dahlia was betrothed to Jonah. The plan being Dahlia will move into the castle and live with his family. Jonah wasn't the most thrilled with this arrangement, but he knew it was necessary. He just tried to enjoy his last few months of freedom.
One night, Jonah woke up. He rubbed his eyes and realized James was gone from their bed. Which was odd. Jonah tried to go back to sleep, but he just couldn't without James around so he decided to take a little walk around the castle until James came back.
He walked through the hallways and heard ?̸̛̥̳͍̟̠̮̗̠͈̀̌̂̄̾͂̈͒͌?̶̢̰̜̰̪͍͙̪̥̮͎̼̒̓͗́̑̽͑͌́̃͌̓͘͠?̶̨̤͖̲̳̺͉̘̦̥͍̆̍̅?̸̦̼̦̩̜̤̗̱͚͈͔̮̋́́̃͌̀̊̇͌̈̀͒͗͜ͅ?̸̨̩͚̭̪̖͔͓̭̫̺̖̪̮͈̏̐́̑̆̎̎͆̅͆́̕̕?̶̨͇̲̩̱̔́̅͂̆̽. "Jonah?" James said softly.
"Huh-?" Jonah shook his head, James was carefully dressing him.
"It's going to be alright.." He dusted off Jonah's shoulder before looking up at him. "You're going to walk out there, and you're going to act.. somber.. but stern.."
"And nobody will know w̷͍̙̏͝h̶̳̕a̷͕̺̒̔̅ẗ̷̢̹̩́ ̴̪͖̐͌̂h̵̹̍̃̕ȁ̴̯͉̮ṗ̷̠̞͆̆p̴̳̅̕͠e̸͍̬̓̍n̴͙͉̱͌͐͒ȩ̴̗̄d̵̹̗͍̒" James said, before placing Jonah's crown upon his head.
The coronation went without a hitch, the wedding was shortly after. Jonah ?̸̖͖̣̈̕͝?̵̢̢̢̤͖̰͛?̴̘͔̤̼͎̩̑͐̓̓?̷̙͈̪͌͆̅͌̏̍?̶̢͍̜̣̟̓͜?̷̮̝̝̬͑̈̍̈́̊?̶͇̙̐̐͂̏͘͠?̶̣̳͓̖̔̿̀̒̔͠?̶̢͓͚͒͐̈̌?̷͓̲̦̼̃̒̐̆ was fine. He, was able to do a lot more now. He made James his knight, so that the two of them can still spend time together. James, happily accepted this role. It was different now. But, the two of them made it work together.
Dahlia begins... to notice something between the two... But Jonah didn't seem to notice nor care. He just really needed James around. He grounded him in a way no one else could.
A year or so passes, and a plague has taken over the country, and unfortunately Jonah fell deathly ill. For several weeks, Jonah was mostly alone.. as nobody wanted to catch the illness.. Jonah is broken out of his mind by the sound of his door opening late at night. A man in a mask came in with some sort of liquid in a bowl, Jonah quickly realized it was James. The two of them, had a long conversation about their life, about everything that happened.
James had Jonah drink the concoction he had made, though Jonah doubted it will help much. He was talking to James as if he was going to die.. why would he survive this after all.. James caressed his cheek with a gloved hand. The two of them.. told eachother how much they love one another.. Jonah told James that he would always be his, no matter what. Jonah, amazingly actually was able to recover from the illness. It genuinely was a miracle. He wondered if James care had maybe actually helped a bit. The two of them continue to live their lives normally. One day the two of them are walking through the castle, chatting about some plans for a banquet they have to throw because of some neighboring kingdoms coming to visit.
Until they are stopped in the middle of the hallway by Dahlia and a few sets of guards. Jonah and Dahlia sat upon their thrones as they watched the execution. This was, a quite common occurrence for any royal family. The guards pulled him onto the chopping block, locking the boy in place. Jonah thought about how his mother never let him go to these kind of things. How gruesome they were.
The executioner asked for the prisoners last words. But he said nothing. When Jonah awoke, he was in a courtroom. He tasted A̷̭̗̅s̸̢̱͍͓͍̤̙̈̏̏͌̂̈͠h̶͎͇͋̈̓̓̇́̾̕ͅ in his mouth. He seemed to have made an audience with the gods. A tall figure dressed in a black cloak stood before him, along with several other godlike beings. Jonah remembered feeling nervous, having all these eyes upon him.
The god in the cloak asks Jonah if he wants to admit the sins he’s committed. To face the crimes and horrors that have happened in his life because of his own two hands.
Jonah snapped into a performance, he begged and pleaded, he said he was sorry. ough what thinners do you use... those feet are stunning
Thank you! My answer will probably be disappointing. Up until last year when I started doing Ash’s pet cuts I had no need for fancy scissors. I got this cheap set to get us started and have been using them ever since.
GLADOG Professional 5 in 1 Dog Grooming Scissors Set with Safety Round Tips, Sharp and Heavy-duty Pet Grooming Shears for Cats https://a.co/d/5vRSlML
With that being said, I do a lot of my foot work with my clippers. I have a wahl bravura and I use the longest setting on the 5-1 blade it comes with. I finish off the outline of the foot with the curved shears and then do some work with the thinning shears to even out the leg.
Most of the credit goes to my model. He’s very good and very still so I have a lot of time to go over everything multiple times and get it just right.
My next purchase when I find a pair I like is going to be curved thinning shears. I think that’ll really be what I need to get Ash’s face looking the way I want with less work than I’m doing now. It’ll be fun to see if they make this guy’s feet easier as well.

does pochitor ever have to go to the groomer? wondering bc im watching a vid of some shih tzu who usually has to be sedated to be groomed lol i wondered how pochita would behave with her Attitudes
LOL...Well some somewhat deep lore about me is that i was a dog groomer for 2 years which is where i fell in love with shih tzus and learned how to give them haircuts so i just do pochitas haircuts myself cus its expensive to get it done professionally, but its such hard work w the combination of her brattitude and not having clippers so have to cut it all w scissors....i have to wait until shes fast asleep then get in whatever i can until she wakes up & get annoyed :/ takes at least a week of this to get it looking cute and even. My old shihtzu bijou was so sweetabout getting haircuts he was the most relaxed dog ever because he was a grateful orphan. pochita is spoiled -_- i would feel so guilty sending her to a groomer cus pissed of shihtzu is SCARY like ive been there. so im glad i at least have the ability to do it myself cus im used to Her Ways. <3

A well-lit, modern dog grooming salon in North York with a professional groomer carefully trimming a fluffy golden doodle’s fur. The groomer, wearing a clean uniform and gloves, uses precision scissors while the dog sits calmly on a grooming table. In the background, shelves stocked with premium pet shampoos, brushes, and grooming tools are neatly arranged. A second groomer blow-dries a small poodle, while another dog waits happily in a designated play area. The salon has a clean and welcoming atmosphere, emphasizing professional and high-quality pet care.

How to Choose the Right Poodle Haircut for Your Dog in Toronto

Poodles are one of the most stylish and versatile dog breeds when it comes to grooming. Their curly, hypoallergenic coats allow for a wide variety of haircut styles, each suited to different lifestyles, weather conditions, and personal preferences. If you’re a dog owner in Toronto, finding the right poodle haircut for your furry friend requires careful consideration of factors like climate, maintenance, and activity level. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about choosing the perfect haircut for your poodle in Toronto.
Understanding Poodle Coat Types
Before diving into specific haircut styles, it’s important to understand your poodle’s coat type. Poodles have a dense, curly coat that requires regular grooming to prevent matting and tangling. Regular brushing and professional grooming help maintain the coat’s health and appearance. Depending on your poodle's coat condition and length, certain styles may be better suited than others.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Poodle Haircut in Toronto
1. Toronto’s Climate
Toronto experiences both hot summers and cold winters, meaning your poodle’s haircut should adapt to seasonal changes. For example:
Summer months (June-August): A shorter trim like the Miami or Kennel Cut helps keep your poodle cool.
Winter months (November-March): A longer coat or styles like the Continental Clip provide warmth and protection against the cold.
2. Maintenance and Grooming Requirements
Some poodle haircuts require frequent upkeep, while others are more low-maintenance. If you don’t have time for regular brushing and grooming appointments, a simpler style like the Puppy Cut may be ideal. However, if you enjoy maintaining your poodle’s stylish appearance, you might opt for an elaborate show cut.
3. Your Poodle’s Activity Level
Poodles that are highly active, such as those that swim or play outdoors often, may benefit from practical, shorter cuts that reduce dirt buildup and tangles. Less active dogs can maintain longer styles without as much concern for debris and matting.
4. Purpose: Show vs. Pet Cut
If your poodle participates in dog shows, their haircut must adhere to breed standards set by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). However, if your poodle is a pet, you have more flexibility to choose a practical and comfortable style.
Popular Poodle Haircuts in Toronto
1. Puppy Cut
Best for: Everyday pet owners
Description: A simple, low-maintenance cut where the hair is trimmed evenly all over the body, typically about 1-2 inches long.
Pros: Easy to maintain, comfortable for all seasons, and gives a cute, youthful appearance.
Cons: Requires regular trims to keep the coat even.
2. Kennel Cut
Best for: Active poodles, summer months
Description: A short, uniform cut that leaves about ½ inch of fur all over the body, with a slightly longer tail and face.
Pros: Minimal maintenance, reduces matting, and keeps the poodle cool in hot weather.
Cons: Provides little insulation during cold months.
3. Miami Cut (Bikini Cut)
Best for: Warmer months, stylish pet owners
Description: A short trim on the body with fluffy pom-poms left on the legs, tail, and head.
Pros: Stylish, practical for warm weather, and less prone to matting.
Cons: Requires frequent trims and maintenance to keep the shape.
4. Teddy Bear Cut
Best for: Owners who prefer a rounded, plush look
Description: The hair is left slightly longer and rounded around the face, creating a teddy bear-like appearance.
Pros: Adorable, keeps the poodle warm in winter, and less formal than show cuts.
Cons: Requires regular brushing to prevent matting.
5. Lamb Cut
Best for: Owners who want a natural, fluffy look
Description: The coat is scissored to a medium length with rounded edges, giving a soft and fluffy appearance.
Pros: Great for winter, maintains a plush look without being too long.
Cons: Requires professional grooming to shape properly.
6. Continental Clip
Best for: Show poodles, formal styles
Description: A dramatic style with shaved areas on the legs and face while leaving pom-poms on the ankles, head, and tail.
Pros: Traditional show cut, elegant and eye-catching.
Cons: High maintenance, requires frequent grooming.
7. English Saddle Clip
Best for: Show dogs or owners who prefer a classic look
Description: Similar to the Continental Clip but with more hair left on the body.
Pros: Provides more insulation than the Continental Clip, ideal for colder months.
Cons: Requires significant upkeep and frequent brushing.
Finding a Professional Poodle Groomer in Toronto
Choosing the right groomer is just as important as choosing the right haircut. Here are some tips for finding a reputable poodle groomer in Toronto:
Look for reviews and recommendations: Check Google, Yelp, and pet forums for groomers with positive feedback from poodle owners.
Ask about experience: Ensure the groomer has experience with poodles and different haircut styles.
Visit the grooming salon: Check for cleanliness, professionalism, and how the staff interacts with pets.
Inquire about grooming packages: Many salons offer bundled services, including bathing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning.
Some popular poodle grooming salons in Toronto include:
Tail Blazers Grooming Spa
Pawfect Spa Toronto
Downtown Dog Grooming
Doggieville Grooming & Spa
Maintaining Your Poodle’s Haircut at Home
Regular at-home maintenance helps extend the life of your poodle’s haircut. Here’s how you can keep your poodle looking fresh between grooming appointments:
Daily brushing: Prevents matting and keeps the coat smooth.
Bathing every 3-4 weeks: Use a poodle-friendly shampoo to keep the coat clean.
Trimming around the eyes and paws: Helps maintain visibility and cleanliness.
Using detangling sprays: Helps keep the coat soft and manageable.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right Poodle haircut Toronto depends on factors like climate, maintenance level, and lifestyle. Whether you prefer a simple Puppy Cut, a stylish Miami Cut, or an elegant Continental Clip, keeping your poodle well-groomed ensures their comfort and health. Finding a reputable groomer and maintaining their coat at home will keep your furry friend looking and feeling their best year-round.

PSA to anyone with a cat:
My cat just recently had surgery. She's recovering very well, don't worry! Not that kind of post. The issue is that she's a really active cat and we don't have any room we can put her in where she wouldn't have stuff to jump on and run around. The vet suggested an extra large dog kennel which works perfectly. Enough room for a litter box, water bowl, and empty space to lay down. We've been letting her out for her meals since we have to give her medication anyway and then we put her right back in when we're done.
However.... make sure that if you need to use this trick that the litter you're using in there isn't the kind that absorbs liquid and clumps up. Long story short: kitty got her feet wet from the water bowl and then went in the box. Got litter clumped up between her pawpads and dried there because she's got a cone on and can't groom.
I used to work in a grooming place so I know that the only safe way to cut stuff out from that location is with a shaver and even then I would not recommend it unless it's something you've been taught how to do, like professionally. If it goes wrong you've got bigger problems on your hands than you already do with the litter (cut feetsies, etc). Same problem with scissors and they can be harder to control.
I have never shaved my cat's paw pads before (or any cat's paw pads, only done big dogs) because I haven't needed to and she would freak out if I tried. So I had to spend, like, 10 minutes trying to break up the clumps and pull them out with my fingernails while singing the first verse of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" to her to keep her calm. I only know the first verse.
Anyway, TL;DR: extra large dog kennel good for keeping active cats contained post surgery but don't put clumping litter in there. Obligatory cat photo below.

And the cone is technically a pineapple.

Mastering Dog Grooming Scissors: Your Complete Guide to Flawless Fur
When it comes to grooming your furry friend, having the right tools can make all the difference. Dog grooming scissors are an essential part of any pet parent’s grooming kit, especially if you want to keep your dog’s coat looking fresh, healthy, and free from tangles. In this guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about dog grooming scissors, including types, tips, and how to choose the best pair for your pooch.

Why Are Dog Grooming Scissors Important?
Regular grooming not only keeps your dog looking their best but also promotes better hygiene and prevents skin issues. While clippers are great for trimming large areas, grooming scissors give you precision and control, allowing you to:
Trim sensitive areas like the face, paws, and tail.
Shape and style your dog’s coat.
Remove small mats or tangles without shaving.
Investing in a quality pair of scissors ensures you can safely groom your dog without causing discomfort or injury.
Types of Dog Grooming Scissors
Dog grooming scissors come in several types, each designed for specific tasks. Let’s break them down:
1. Straight Scissors
These are the most common type of grooming scissors. They are ideal for trimming long fur, shaping the coat, and giving your dog a neat finish. Available in various lengths, longer scissors are perfect for larger dogs, while shorter ones work well for small breeds.
2. Thinning Shears
Thinning shears are designed to blend and soften the coat. They have one serrated blade and one smooth blade, making them perfect for thinning out thick fur and creating a natural look.
3. Curved Scissors
Curved scissors are great for trimming rounded areas like the top of the head, tail, or paws. The curved design helps you achieve smooth, even lines, making them a favorite for breeds with flowing coats like Golden Retrievers and Shih Tzus.
4. Safety-Tip Scissors
These scissors feature rounded tips, ensuring your dog stays safe during grooming. They’re particularly useful for trimming around sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and nose.
What to Look for When Choosing Dog Grooming Scissors
With so many options available, here are a few key factors to consider when buying grooming scissors:
Material: Opt for stainless steel scissors as they are durable, rust-resistant, and easy to clean.
Size: Choose scissors that are comfortable for your hand size and suitable for your dog’s coat length.
Grip: During extended grooming sessions, ergonomic handles with a non-slip grip will lessen hand fatigue.
Blades: Sharp blades provide precise cuts and prevent tugging on your dog’s fur.
Tips for Grooming Your Dog at Home
Prepare Your Dog: Brush your dog’s coat thoroughly to remove any tangles before you start trimming.
Create a Calm Environment: Groom in a quiet, well-lit area to keep your dog relaxed.
Use the Right Scissors: Select the appropriate scissors for the specific area you’re working on.
Take Breaks: If your dog gets restless, take short breaks to keep the experience stress-free.
Maintain Your Tools: Clean and oil your scissors regularly to keep them sharp and in top condition.
The Greatest Advantages of Dog Grooming at Home
Saves Money: Regular grooming sessions at home can significantly cut down on professional grooming costs.
Strengthens Your Bond: Grooming is a great way to spend quality time with your dog and build trust.
Custom Care: You can tailor the grooming process to your dog’s specific needs and preferences
Conclusion
Dog grooming scissors are a must-have tool for keeping your dog’s coat in tip-top shape. Whether you’re a pet parent new to grooming or an experienced pro, investing in high-quality scissors can make the process easier, safer, and more enjoyable for both you and your furry friend.
So, grab your grooming kit, pick up those scissors, and give your dog the spa treatment they deserve! A well-groomed dog is, after all, a happy dog.

How to Groom Your Dog Like a Pro: Step-by-Step Tips

Grooming your dog isn’t just about keeping them looking cute—it’s an essential part of their overall health and well-being. Regular grooming prevents matting, reduces shedding, keeps the skin healthy, and even strengthens the bond between you and your furry friend. If you’re looking to groom your dog at home like a professional, this step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
Step 1: Gather Your Grooming Tools
Before you start, make sure you have the right tools for the job. Professional dog groomers rely on high-quality tools, and so should you! Here’s a basic list of what you’ll need: - Brush and comb: A slicker brush, pin brush, or de-shedding tool, depending on your dog’s coat type. - Dog-friendly shampoo and conditioner: Avoid human products, as they can dry out your dog’s skin. - Nail clippers or grinder: To keep nails at a healthy length and prevent painful cracking or splitting. - Ear cleaning solution and cotton pads: essential for preventing infections and removing debris. - Dog toothbrush and toothpaste: Helps maintain fresh breath and prevent dental issues. - Clippers and scissors: If your dog needs a haircut, invest in good-quality grooming clippers and safety scissors. - Towel and dryer: A microfiber towel and a pet-friendly dryer will help speed up the drying process.
Step 2: Brushing Your Dog’s Coat
Brushing your dog is the foundation of good grooming. Not only does it remove dirt and loose hair, but it also prevents mats and tangles that can lead to discomfort or skin infections. How Often Should You Brush? - Short-haired breeds (Beagles, Boxers, etc.): 1-2 times per week - Medium-haired breeds (Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, etc.): Every other day - Long-haired breeds (Shih Tzus, Poodles, etc.): Daily brushing to prevent matting Brushing Techniques - Use a slicker brush for detangling and a de-shedding tool for heavy shedders. - Brush in the direction of hair growth to avoid causing discomfort. - Be gentle around sensitive areas like the face, belly, and tail.
Step 3: Bathing Your Dog
Bath time is essential for keeping your dog’s coat and skin healthy. However, over-bathing can strip natural oils, so it’s important to bathe your dog only when needed. How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog? - Short-haired breeds: Every 6-8 weeks - Medium-haired breeds: Every 4-6 weeks - Long-haired breeds: Every 3-4 weeks (or as needed if they get dirty often) How to Bathe Your Dog Properly - Brush before bathing to remove loose hair and mats. - Use lukewarm water—not too hot, not too cold. - Apply dog-specific shampoo and lather gently. - Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue. - Towel-dry and use a pet dryer on a low setting to avoid burns.
Step 4: Trimming Your Dog’s Nails
Overgrown nails can be painful and even cause mobility issues. Regular trimming keeps your pup comfortable and prevents injuries. How to Trim Dog Nails Safely - Use a nail clipper or grinder designed for dogs. - Hold your dog’s paw firmly and trim just the tip of the nail to avoid cutting the quick (the sensitive blood vessel inside the nail). - If you accidentally cut too deep, use styptic powder to stop the bleeding. - Reward your dog with a treat after each paw to create a positive association.
Step 5: Cleaning Your Dog’s Ears
Ear cleaning is often overlooked but is crucial to preventing infections, especially in floppy-eared breeds like Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds. Ear Cleaning Process - Use a vet-approved ear-cleaning solution. - Soak a cotton pad and gently wipe the visible parts of the ear. - Never use cotton swabs, as they can push debris deeper into the ear canal. - If your dog’s ears have a strong odor or excessive wax buildup, consult your vet.
Step 6: Brushing Your Dog’s Teeth
Dental health is a crucial part of grooming that many pet owners neglect. Plaque buildup can lead to gum disease and serious health problems if left untreated. Brushing Routine - Use dog-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste, as it contains harmful ingredients like xylitol). - Brush 2-3 times per week to prevent tartar buildup. - If your dog resists brushing, try dental chews or water additives as a supplement.
Step 7: Giving Your Dog a Haircut (If Needed)
Some breeds require regular haircuts to maintain a clean and healthy coat. If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, professional grooming is a great option. DIY Haircut Tips - Use sharp, high-quality clippers for even trimming. - Trim in the direction of hair growth to avoid an uneven look. - Keep the scissors away from the eyes and sensitive areas. - If in doubt, seek professional help to avoid accidents.
Step 8: Final Touches and Rewards
After a full grooming session, give your dog some positive reinforcement! Offer their favorite treat, go for a walk, or have a fun play session to make the experience enjoyable. Quick Grooming Checklist ✅ Brushed the coat and removed tangles ✅ Bathed with dog-friendly shampoo ✅ Trimmed nails safely ✅ Cleaned ears gently ✅ Brushed teeth with dog toothpaste ✅ Trimmed hair if necessary ✅ Rewarded with treats and praise! By following these steps, you can keep your dog looking and feeling their best without spending a fortune at the groomer. With patience and practice, at-home grooming can become a stress-free, bonding experience for both you and your pup! Read the full article

Cavapoo Grooming Tips and DIY Guides: Keep Your Pup Looking Their Best

Introduction
Cavapoos, known for their charming appearance and lovable personalities, also have a beautiful coat that requires regular grooming. A mix between the Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cavapoos often have wavy or curly coats that can be prone to tangling and matting. Proper grooming is essential not only to maintain their adorable looks but also to keep them healthy and comfortable. In this guide, we’ll provide essential Cavapoo grooming tips and DIY steps that you can easily follow at home.
1. Understanding the Cavapoo Coat: What Makes It Unique?
Cavapoos typically inherit a combination of the Poodle’s curly coat and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s silky, wavy coat. Their coats can range from loose waves to tight curls, depending on the genetics of the individual dog. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Hypoallergenic: Many Cavapoos are considered hypoallergenic because they shed very little, making them great for allergy sufferers.
Matting Prone: Due to their curly or wavy hair, Cavapoos are prone to matting, especially in areas like behind the ears, under the arms, and around the legs. Regular brushing is crucial to prevent mats from forming.
Coat Texture Variability: Some Cavapoos have a single-layer coat like the Poodle, while others may inherit a double coat from their Cavalier parent, which requires more frequent grooming.
2. Brushing Your Cavapoo: Preventing Tangles and Mats
Regular brushing is one of the most important grooming tasks for Cavapoos. It keeps their coat free of tangles, removes dirt, and reduces shedding. Here’s how to brush your Cavapoo at home:
Tools You’ll Need:
Slicker Brush: A slicker brush is perfect for removing loose hair and preventing tangles. Choose one with soft bristles to avoid irritating your Cavapoo’s skin.
Comb: A metal comb is useful for reaching deeper into the coat and working through any knots.
Dematting Tool: For stubborn mats, a dematting tool helps break them up without hurting your dog.
How Often to Brush: Brush your Cavapoo at least 2-3 times a week. If your Cavapoo has a curlier coat, daily brushing may be needed to prevent matting.
Brushing Technique: Start by gently brushing your Cavapoo’s coat in sections. Focus on high-risk areas for matting like behind the ears, around the neck, and under the legs. Always brush in the direction of hair growth to avoid pulling on the skin.
3. DIY Bathing: How to Bathe Your Cavapoo at Home
Bathing is an essential part of keeping your Cavapoo’s coat and skin healthy. However, bathing too often can strip their coat of natural oils, so aim to bathe them every 4-6 weeks.
Steps for Bathing Your Cavapoo:
Brush Before Bathing: Always brush your Cavapoo thoroughly before a bath to remove tangles and mats. Wetting a matted coat can make it harder to detangle later.
Choose the Right Shampoo: Use a dog-specific, gentle shampoo. Cavapoos can have sensitive skin, so avoid shampoos with harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances. Oatmeal-based or hypoallergenic shampoos are great options.
Lather Gently: Wet your Cavapoo with lukewarm water, then apply shampoo from the neck down. Avoid getting water or soap in their ears and eyes. Gently massage the shampoo into their coat and rinse thoroughly.
Conditioner (Optional): For a softer, tangle-free coat, you can use a dog-safe conditioner. This is especially useful for Cavapoos with curly coats.
Drying: After the bath, gently towel-dry your dog, then use a blow dryer on a low-heat setting to fully dry the coat. Brush their fur again as you dry to prevent tangles.
4. DIY Haircuts for Cavapoos: Keep Your Dog Stylish at Home
While many Cavapoo owners prefer taking their dog to a professional groomer, you can also learn to trim their coat at home. Regular trims help keep your Cavapoo looking neat and prevent excessive matting.
Tools You’ll Need:
Grooming Scissors: Invest in grooming scissors with rounded tips for trimming sensitive areas like around the face and paws.
Electric Clippers: If you want to give your Cavapoo an all-over trim, electric clippers are a must. Choose clippers with adjustable blade lengths for different parts of the body.
How to Trim Your Cavapoo:
Face and Head: Trim the hair around your Cavapoo’s eyes and muzzle with grooming scissors. Be careful to avoid cutting too close to the eyes or mouth. You can also trim the ears to prevent matting.
Body and Legs: Using clippers with a longer blade setting, trim the body and legs to your desired length. For a more natural look, leave the hair slightly longer on the body and shorter on the legs and underbelly.
Tail and Paws: Trim any excess hair around the tail and between the paw pads. Keeping the hair short in these areas prevents dirt buildup and matting.
How Often to Trim: Cavapoos typically need a haircut every 6-8 weeks. For a low-maintenance look, consider a shorter cut, such as the "teddy bear" trim, which keeps the hair short and manageable while maintaining their fluffy appearance.
5. Ear Cleaning and Nail Trimming: Essential DIY Grooming Tasks
Regular ear cleaning and nail trimming are important for your Cavapoo’s health. Cavapoos are prone to ear infections, especially if they have floppy ears, so keeping their ears clean is essential.
Ear Cleaning:
Supplies You’ll Need: Use a vet-approved ear cleaning solution and cotton pads or gauze.
How to Clean: Gently lift your Cavapoo’s ear and apply a few drops of the solution into the ear canal. Massage the base of the ear to distribute the cleaner, then wipe away any debris with the cotton pad. Repeat on the other ear.
How Often to Clean: Clean your Cavapoo’s ears once a week or as recommended by your vet, especially if they’re prone to ear infections.
Nail Trimming:
Tools You’ll Need: Use a dog nail clipper or nail grinder designed for small breeds.
How to Trim: Gently hold your Cavapoo’s paw and clip the nails, avoiding the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail). If you’re nervous about cutting too much, use a nail grinder for a more gradual trim.
How Often to Trim: Trim your Cavapoo’s nails every 3-4 weeks. If you can hear their nails clicking on the floor, it’s time for a trim.
6. Teeth Brushing: Maintain Your Cavapoo’s Oral Health
Dental care is often overlooked but is crucial for preventing gum disease and keeping your Cavapoo’s breath fresh. Here’s how to care for your dog’s teeth at home:
Supplies You’ll Need:
Dog-Specific Toothbrush: A small, soft-bristled toothbrush works best for Cavapoos. You can also use a finger brush if your dog is sensitive.
Dog Toothpaste: Never use human toothpaste, as it can be toxic to dogs. Opt for a dog-safe toothpaste, usually available in flavors like poultry or peanut butter.
How to Brush Your Cavapoo’s Teeth:
Introduce Gradually: If your dog is new to teeth brushing, start slowly. Let them taste the toothpaste first, then gently lift their lips and brush in small circles.
Focus on Plaque-Prone Areas: Pay special attention to the back teeth, where plaque tends to build up. Aim to brush for about 2 minutes, a few times per week.
7. Seasonal Grooming Tips for Cavapoos
Your Cavapoo’s grooming needs may change depending on the season. Here are some tips for keeping your pup comfortable year-round:
Summer Grooming: In the warmer months, you may want to give your Cavapoo a shorter haircut to help them stay cool. Be mindful of sun exposure on lighter coats.
Winter Grooming: During colder months, you can let your Cavapoo’s coat grow a bit longer for warmth, but continue regular brushing to prevent matting. If your dog is sensitive to the cold, consider investing in a dog jacket.

Regular grooming is essential to keeping your Cavapoo looking and feeling their best. By following these DIY grooming tips, you can ensure that your dog stays clean, healthy, and comfortable between professional grooming sessions.
