[First, I was rereading "Agua Caliente" and I remembered a song that played a lot in my childhood (and I had kind of forgotten) bc the lyrics somehow matched the Patrochilles dynamic in this fic. This is kind of funny bc I would never in my life associate sertanejo (it's a type of country music, I think? Idk I've never heard country, but the aesthetic is kind of similar. Anyway, it's pretty popular here) with shipping an ancient Greek couple in modern AU, but ok. And I went to listen to this song again and now I'm listening to it on a loop, so thanks for that.]

Now the real question! It's perhaps a strange question, but do you plan what you write? Like, before you write, do you have the whole structured idea in mind? I could have sworn it was like that reading the fics, but then some notes on Ao3 and certain things you say on Tumblr started to make me reflect that maybe you don't plan as much as I thought… in that case, how do you manage to connect everything so well without looking like something was left out/without prior planning??? It's magic, technique, luck or actually do you plan?

Sorry if the question is a bit "???" but I'm REALLY thinking about this! I used to write fics years ago and I was in the "won't plan" group and as expected the fics came out obviously unplanned (but that was ok with me bc it was just to pass the time and I didn't expect it to be an engaging story or anything), and here's why this ask exists: it's precisely bc I was in the “won't plan” group that I'm really intrigued by the possibility of you NOT planning bc it just doesn't seem that way reading your fics...

The short answer is that I do plan what I write, but probably not enough.

I rarely start writing a fic with an entire idea. Often it's just a vibe. But I won't start posting a fic until I know exactly what the conflict is and how it will be resolved.

This was easy in ATG, for example, because I'd already written the resolution before I even decided to write the fic. Structuring it by Patroclus's age also helped, because I could make an outline with the stuff that needed to happen and then jam stuff I wanted to happen around it. That "Stuff" could be really specific--obviously Pat had to graduate school and Achilles had to go to the Olympics on specific years, and it was also like, this section should have them fighting. This section should have them getting along, but Achilles is hiding this big lie so there should be a weird tension.

In Sunset, it took me longer to figure out the conflict/resolution. Sure, I knew that Achilles was going to cry on a Chicago street corner and get naked in Pat's kitchen, but why was he there? How did he get there? I had already written Achilles settling in to Pat's place and the scene where he gets into the lake before I decided on Aphrodite being the key to explain this whole thing. Then I knew Pat had to die. But a lot of the stuff that happened in the middle was sort of on a whim (particularly Achilles getting on the wrong L train-that was definitely just an impulse I had while finishing that chapter). Tecmessa's chapter was also a later addition, and a deeply self-indulgent one, hah.

Agua was the least planned of these three, and in some ways it was because the idea was a lot simpler. After three years, Achilles runs into Patroclus again and they reconcile in some way. I knew exactly how Patroclus would feel about the whole thing (relieved, guilty, upset, wounded, hopeful, upset about feeling hopeful). My original plan was just to set up Achilles in his shop and his new life doing his best and have him run into Patroclus at the beach, and eventually they'd go to the desert. I wrote parts of their meeting first, and then I started writing the beginning and ended up scrapping most of that. I realized I was going to have to do a lot more writing for poor Achilles. My lack of planning here did cause some difficulties--I had like three versions of that date he went on with Pat with different endings. One involved Pat in the hospital, lmao. Zag and Meg coming to stay with Achilles were kind of whims, and I had meant to have Hypnos show up for "his turn" and have Achilles send him home because no, these were not team-building exercises, but then I forgot 😩.

The reason that I need to know the conflict/resolution at the start is because I do think all the scenes in a fic should relate to it in some way, either by building up the conflict or setting the groundwork for a resolution. Even for the impulsive scenes I add just for fun, I think about how they can do this. For example, Achilles getting lost on the L allowed me to build up Pat's unreasonable anxiety, show that Ajax was also feeling it to some extent, and end in Pat saying "fuck it" and just giving in to making out with his hot, ancient boyfriend. It was also something that happened to a friend who was visiting me from out of the country and didn't have a working cell phone. That moment of watching him through the window of the L as it slowly pulled away is just etched in my memory.

In Agua Caliente, almost anything could relate to the resolution, because the resolution was "Achilles having a life," thus it didn't require as much planning. Zagreus's apartment getting flooded (something that happened to me in grad school) showed Achilles attempting to be flexible with some success while allowing himself to become closer to Zagreus, which led to a point of connection with his kids. It also made it easier to explain why Achilles was doing Zag's delivery that day when he ran into Pat. There were only a couple things that truly needed to happen in AC for the fic to make sense, and that was a resolution with Achilles' kids and then with Patroclus, of course.

I do get loose threads sometimes, side conflicts or things that didn't end up going anywhere, and those things tend to annoy me until I figure out a way to resolve them or make them otherwise relevant. Or I don't. Or sometimes I realize I need to add something/someone into the fic, and it would have been smoother if I'd added it in an earlier chapter so it didn't seem like a convenient thing I'd just thought of to solve a problem. That's always annoying to me. But whatever. It's fanfic. That's the risk of posting while you write.

Modern AU Thoughts in no particular order bc I've been doing a lot of snippet writing in this setting lately but I haven't posted about it much, GO!:

Due to a complicated series accidents, lucky breaks and what were probably a few assassinations, Almaea ends up being the only surviving heir of Vekrom Duet, her estranged biological father and reclusive owner of Duet Technologies Inc., a massively profitable company that sold and produced high quality security systems.

Almaea never met her father, and only discovered his identity when she was tracked down by his lawyers for the purposes of executing his last will and testament. She is actually pretty bitter that he knew of her existence and those of her children but still chose not to approach them.

The Duet family is distantly related to royalty, but the local government has long moved away from monarchy, so it’s little more than an interesting family fact.

Despite Kemat, Maji, and Vashael all being adults, they still live at home with their parents. The Duet family estate is big enough for all five members of the family and then some, and they don’t see the point in moving out when they’re all pretty comfortable where they are.

Almaea and Manon-Val are often away on company business, but make a point to FaceTime their children at least once a night, if possible.

Maji was secretly dating Neragh, a former employee and security guard of Duet Tech Inc., and went public with their relationship after he lost his leg from the knee down and she paid for his prosthetic. They are engaged but have no wedding date set.

Kemat is aromantic/asexual, and is a regular face at the city’s pride events, only missing one year when he punched an off-duty police officer over ‘fighting words’ and spent the weekend in prison.

Vashael graduated college with decent grades but then went on to start a band with his college friends. They’re pretty good, and have a few albums out on the popular streaming apps, but they’re mostly unknown outside of their tri-city area

Michael makes a damn good cinnamon latte that Haaruma - notorious hater of lines and self-proclaimed ‘impatient bitch’ - will queue an hour for.

Michael had a crush on Vashael first after discovering their band’s music, but befriended Haaruma before he ever got to talk to Vashael face to face.

Naoka and Haaruma are still married but it’s a secret to everybody because Naoka’s parents are massively homophobic.

Haaruma has living family in this AU, but she’s no-contact with both of her parents for various reasons. She does still talk to her half-brother Isstun, though.

Bashur (the band’s Minotaur drummer) has his silhouette incorporated into all of the band’s album covers because he’s the most recognizable figure out of all the members.

Michael has a beautiful singing voice, but absolutely debilitating stage fright when the crowd is anything bigger than five or six people. Haaruma and Vashael both dream of one day helping him get over this fear so he can join the band (though their motivations are quite different).

Magic does exist in this setting, but due to past historical events, much of the knowledge of it has been lost. Some scientists and scholars dedicate their careers to researching and trying to revive this knowledge. Ex: Chad Ziel (the lich who isn’t quite so crazy (yet) in this AU), a rising star in the arcane academia scene for his work in understanding ancient curses.

Velenna was once the leading arcane scholar in Chad's field before she retired to live a 'less hectic' lifestyle, and now works with the local authorities of Springvale and surrounding cities as a cursebreaker. She and Chad have no connection in this AU beyond working in the same field of study.

Velenna did not raise Almaea in this AU, but acted as her mentor figure in college, and remains a close friend of the Duet family.

This AU is my ‘slice of life but with smartphones’ setting. The world building is still ongoing, and we’re just here to have fun when the more medieval base DnD setting won’t quite cut it.

i think when i was watching the water 7 saga and went looking for ~franky content~ i realized people shipped them? and the more i saw them interact in enies lobby the more i just. yes <3

What are your favorite things about the ship?

i love their canon relationship. i don’t write them a lot for that specific reason- i don’t have much to add to it! i just really like how they interact and how they’re like the mom and dad of the straw hats.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

idk if this is unpopular but? i don’t really care if it becomes canon. like i’m sure if in an epilogue, oda’s like “once they retired the pirate life, franky and robin got married and had 3 kids” i’d be like :) but as of right now i really like the fact that there’s not really any prominent romance in op. i like that they can riff off of each other and have a close relationship without any “what are we” stuff or the drama that often comes with romantic relationships in media.

catra!!! you were probably thinking i’d say adora but i’ve put thought into this. on the off chance that catra actually showers, shes got a lot of hair to dry and i’m sorry but shaking your whole body just doesn’t work when you’re half human. it probably takes ages to brush/style as well. on days where she doesn’t do Shit i’d say adora takes the longest. she talks to herself in the mirror and has a very precise routine to go through.

adora! she’s very festive and loves spending time with her friends and family. dressing up is fun for her too, she probably starts prepping couples costumes for halloween in january.

i cant think of any? they just do everything together so.

i know i said this for the violentine one but literally no one can stand them. catra and adora are literally children. they’re petty and affectionate and cheesy and have this ridiculous pre-relationship flirting. catras always teasing adora and adora is always getting so flustered over it and its sickening. i feel like they’d probably just hang out with their friends in groups rather than as couples. seahawk is the only one who can stand them when they’re like that.

i like to think about this one within canon and not a modern au, because i imagine they spend so much time doing childish stuff that they never had the chance to do as kids. we’re talking stupid games like connect 4 and monopoly and the game of life and that one with the dice presser in the middle (trouble?). they also probably go on walks a lot and love sun-bathing outside on the grass together. they do basically everything together after the war, you can’t separate them, if you ever catch them alone then you’re Wrong because the other is certainly somewhere nearby.

AGGGH THIS ONE IS HARD. theres so many scenarios. like adora making the first move because catras being so teasing she cant take it anymore. and catra making the first move because she finally realizes that adoras too fucking dumb and shy to act on her feelings...i cant decide............

I know you’ve probably given up on you Neighbor AU but I just wanted to say that it’s probably one of my most favorite modern AUs ever. It makes my heart feel so light

Ahahahaha the neighbour AU is my least favourite of my capri stories, that’s why I gave up on it. I think the characterisation got away from me a bit a lot.

But In the spirit of fairness, I’ll give you the future scenes I wrote, and tell you how it would have ended.

Alright, so we left off with the boys in Italy, going on Jokaste’s dream trip which is actually boring as fuck for them hahaha. Damen has revealed that it’s his birthday tomorrow, and Laurent decides to make plans for them.

“Wake up,” Laurent says, throwing a change of clothes onto Damen’s chest. “We have a plane to catch.”

“What?” Damen replies, voice sleep-rough.

“Happy Birthday,” Laurent tells him. “Now get dressed.”

Damen laughs. “Where are we going?”

“Athens. I booked us tickets last night. They were last minute and very expensive, so we can’t be late.”

Damen sits up, shocked into wakefulness. “Athens?”

“You’re Greek, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” Damen says. Then, “Laurent.”

“What?”

His face is all lit up with a smile. “Thank you.”

It’s not a big deal, he wants to say. Or, it’s obvious that this was where Jokaste wanted to go, not him. Something to deflect that he’d stayed up for quite some time while Damen had slept, trying to think of something perfect for him. “Carpe Diem,” he says. “Let’s get out of here.”

Next would come some stuff about them having a great time in Greece, bc Laurent is hella thoughtful and Damen has been there before.  They continue with the “say yes to every opportunity” thing that they have going on, and get up to heaps of shenanigans. It pretty much turns into a contest for trying to get the other guy to be the one to say no first.

Then it gets to dinner time and they hit up a restaurant.

They discuss what Damen thought his life would be like right now

By the time dinner is done with and they’ve shared a piece of tiramisu, they’re into their second bottle of wine.

“Happy Birthday,” Laurent says, tapping his wine glass against Damen’s. “Next time give me more notice for important life events please.”

“If this is you on short notice,” Damen says, “I’m almost afraid to see your competency with more time.”

Laurent smiles at him. Damen smiles back. It’s been a good day. Laurent wishes he could freeze this very moment to live in: the restaurant they’re in is candlelit and intimate, and Damen is managing to look both debonair and effortless. Someone is playing violin. It’s possibly the most romantic moment of Laurent’s life.

“So,” Laurent says. “We’ve still got” - he checks his watch - “about four hours left until the day is over. Auguste and I usually tell each other everything we planned to have done by now and use the leftover time to complete as much as we can.”

“That sounds fun,” Damen says.

“It is,” Laurent replies. “Where did you think you’d be by this point?”

“Nowhere as good as this,” Damen says. He’s such an embarrassing idiot. They barely know each other. Laurent’s already been thinking about suggesting they move in together when they get back. Jokaste will have moved out of the building. Or they could get a new place and start fresh.

“But really,” Laurent prompts.

“Okay. Let me think.” Damen sits back in his seat and takes a sip of wine. “I wanted to quit the family business and start making my own life. I wanted to be engaged. To have a big house out of the city. The commute would be hell but-”

“A dog,” Laurent says impulsively, and Damen grins. “You’re a dog person, aren’t you? You’ll need a yard for that.”

“Exactly. And for any future children.”

“You’re like one of those wholesome family movies.”

Damen shrugs. “I’ve always known I wanted a big family. What about you? Do you want kids?”

“I don’t think anyone will let us adopt one in the next four hours.”

Damen laughs. “Not immediately,” he says. “But in the future.”

Laurent swirls his chardonnay. “I don’t know,” he says. “I haven’t really thought about. I’ve never even thought of myself as the sort of person who…”

“Falls in love?” Damen suggest.

“Is fallen in love with,” he admits, rarely honest.

“You are,” Damen says.

“Are you going to quit your job then?” Laurent says. He takes another sip of wine. He can feel his heart beating, thrumming with a sudden anxiety.

“I called my father this morning.”

“Congratulations,” Laurent says. He finishes his glass and sets it on the table.

“Thank you,” Damen replies. The candle light flatters his dark skin like nothing else. He’s resplendent.

After that, Damen is like, “I think that’s good enough, I mean I’m not engaged with a house, but I’m also not doing that badly.”

And Laurent goes, “We’re still doing the say yes to everything thing right?”

“Yes?”

“Great. I can’t buy you a house, but...”

And then Laurent very dramatically takes off his mother’s ring that he wears, and proposes to Damen in front of the entire restaurant. Damen has to say yes, hahaha. Laurent is satisfied.

Someone at a nearby table buys them champagne as congratulations, and they start talking to the lady. It turns out Laurent’s heartfelt speech, (”I’d marry you now if I could”) is taken too seriously, and the lady knows a guy who’d totally be willing to marry them like tomorrow (bc gay marriage is legal everywhere in my stories, thanks).

Neither of them can say no.

Damen is like “Well I’D totally go for that, but Laurent probably wants his brother at the wedding, s o i g u e s s w e c a n t”

Laurent’s like, “Auguste would understand! It’s your family I’m worried about!”

The lady is like “Great, so you’re both happy to get married tomorrow, let’s do this”

and they pretty much have to marry each other bc they’re too proud to chicken out :’)))). Laurent brings up the option of an annulment/divorce when they’re at the airport going home though, and Damen is like “actually I’m in love with you, and Im happy to try and make it work” and Laurent agrees.

Then would be the epilogue, which is Laurent introducing Damen to Auguste as his husband and Auguste is like “haha this is payback for saying you’re not impulsive” and Laurent is like, “no, we’re legally married. this isn’t a joke”, 

Auguste: “You’ve been together three weeks! That’s shorter than a season of The Bachelor!”

Laurent: “Fortunately, I didn’t need to date twenty men simultaneously to figure out who I wanted.”

and Damen gets a very stern talking to but in the end Auguste accepts that it’s genuinely impossible to control any of Laurent’s actions so whatever. Then Laurent and Damen leave, they are cute, Laurent is like: “That wasn’t so bad, was it?” and Damen’s like “yeah! I’m just worried about you meeting my family. I have like twenty cousins, and aunts and uncles that are all going to want to meet you!! My mum will cry.” And Laurent is like, “oh fuckkkk”.

i just started thinking about how many of my muses know/know of each other (excluding those from the same canon) and uh

ghost knows of georgie bc elvis never shut up about her and he had to suffer through that. nate knows of georgie and maisie through charles james (who tess wrote til recently), and through maisie and ray being proper driving terrors, and he’s also a couple of steps removed from georgie bc he’s friendly with fergus, balfour’s brother.

and nate is engaged to ella/@madepossible who is best friends with layla and tunny, which means not only do they know nate but they have probably met each other, too. and layla and balfour are good friends which means layla probably knows georgie.

in verses where nate is dating darcel/@vanderlylles, darcel has adopted bea, is some kind of mentor to tunny, and has worked with georgie, so he knows at least two of those three, and tunny and bea get on p well.
