My journey of self-discovery as a therian was quite a fun ride. I've described it several times to my friends but I guess it would be nice to document everything into one long post.
My very first ?sona? (not as a fursona, but as an image of myself??) was a dark blue dragon with yellow wings and belly scales. I don't have many pictures of this form left, and don't feel connected to it anymore. It was some kind of a night+stars+water dragon, I guess.
I will add a picture here once I find my childhood drawings of this dragon form
Next one was a cat, but it felt forced and emerged more as a result of my Warrior Cats obsession in middle school. It was a diluted tortoiseshell longhair cat. I was clinging to this form for a long time, though, but it was nothing more than roleplaying.
Tumblr media
At the same time I was obsessed with wolves, howling and growling at my peers, googling "How To Become A Werewolf Real Working Spell", etc. But a wolf identity never felt quite fitting either. Some interactions with wolf therians and their experiences made me realise That's Not Me. So I started searching.
Some other animals that I have considered to be connected to were:
otters (legs waaay too short and I'm not That Much of a water person)
smilodons (i do sometimes get mild shifts of being a Big Beast though, but my claws are DEFINITELY not retractable)
cheetahs (their body is quite similar to what I feel but the vocalisations feel WRONG)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was searching for both physical and behavioural characteristics that I felt, such as:
Height. I feel that my point of view shouldn't be much higher than 1m off the ground
Limbs should be LONG and lanky
Claws are non-retractable, I feel them clicking on the ground as I walk
Ears aren't big and pointy, they are either rounded or floppy/drooping
I have a mane??? Weird?? Maybe not a mane but some kind of long and/or thick fur on my neck
No small spots or stripes on my pelt, colors blend in quite smoothly
No real preference for a certain terrain. I like forests, plains, rivers, hills, swamps, steppes and even deserts, but not the seashore, not the mountains, and not the tundra.
Definitely not a solitary but neither a big pack animal, lives in a small family group?? Also tolerates humans and human environment well.
I bark.
It was a bit frustrating for me to realise that I wasn't some Cool Beast like a sabretooth cat, or a reindeer, or a dragon, but... Just some dog.
But what kind of dog?
My first choice was a Caucasian Shepherd Dog. The mane, the colors, the size felt quite right, but not the bulkiness and the thick fur. My human body isn't very strong and sturdy, and I considered it wishful thinking to think of myself as of such a beast.
Tumblr media
Next pick was a sighthound, a borzoi or a saluki. But I've never seen a borzoi that has the right pelt color, and they are way too tall and social for me. And salukis don't have the mane, though the overall body shape was similar to what I felt myself, and the "grizzle" color feels almost right.
Tumblr media
So for a while, I presented as a weird mutt, a pariah mixed breed dog looking somewhat like this:
Tumblr media
Being a mutt felt like a permission to go wild and add whatever features felt right, so I experimented a lot. And then I stumbled upon a photo of a silken windhound. That was like a revelation. The colors were off, but the shape felt So Correct that I felt euphoric just by looking at pictures of this breed.
So this is the form I'm content with, and feel comfortable enough. The only weird features are that I feel still a bit bulkier than average windhound, and have an additional toe on hind paws!
(The dog on my profile picture is named Tangaloor Prizzi's Honor, by the way!)

Last Rites (1988)
Donald P. Bellisario 1h 43m [Day 12, 2024 - Trashy Tuesday]
"You are all witnesses! The wop started it!" - O'Bannon
Tumblr media
Last Rites is what happens when you want to make a cool mafia film, but plot, good casting and assured direction are incidental. But still, it will be so cool!
Packed with Italian American cliches, this movie has more cheese than a Kraft factory.
Tumblr media
It essentially follows a film noir framework, with all of the gravitas of Chef Boyardee.
Tom Berrenger plays mafia connected priest Father Michael Pace (pah-chay), who smokes, drinks, and bullies the other priest in his parish.
Word spreads quickly through the Italian mob community that underboss, Geno has been taken out. But who killed him?
It was mafia daughter Zena, Geno's wife who shot him - catching him in the arms of his Mexican mistress Angela (Daphne Zuniga), doing it against a lot of curtains.
Tumblr media
Angela narrowly escapes the gunfire, and with possibly the least convincing Mexican accent of all time, finds herself at church in a confessional spilling the beans to Fr. Pace.
Angela doesn't know it, but Zena is Fr. Pace's sister.
Tumblr media
He vows to keep her safe, despite his ties to Zena (Anne Twomey - giving her best Anjelica Houston impersonation). He also vows to keep it in his pants.
Fr. Michael is not great at the whole "keeping your vows" thing.
I still viscerally remember how much Roger Ebert hated Last Rites, calling it, "easily the most offensive big budget picture of 1988". I waited decades to experience what he was talking about. And it is so wonderfully, unintentionally funny. *
Tumblr media
The film draws from some great inspirations. A little Scarface, some Fatal Attraction. It had me wondering if Jonathan Demme or Brian De Palma could have done something with this material. I think the first thing they'd do is rewrite it.
It's terrible. I'll probably watch it again.
Tumblr media
Pair with / watch instead: Prizzi's Honor, Married to the Mob
TRAILER:
youtube
* So sidenote...
I was really trepidatious about watching Last Rites. I kept pushing it off. I remember the terrible Siskel & Ebert review - Ebert went in hard and it stuck with me. I was worried it would be terrible and I wanted it to be awesome. In my mind, there could be nothing more appealing than this Berenger/ Zuniga pairing. Before watching, I get to imagine everything this movie could be and watching it locks in a specificity I sensed I would find distasteful, like nationalism or spaghetti straps. But I had to confront it. Just watch it and accept history as it is and not the poster. Sort of like Electric Dreams.

Kathleen Turner Talks Donald Trump, Shades The Cast Of Friends, And Re-Visits Career Highlights In AMAZING Interview — Catch Up HERE!
I look younger now than when I was in my early 20s
The Kathleen Turner interview in Vulture that was released today is going viral right now, and for good reason -- it's INCREDIBLE!
Turner, a film icon in the 1980s and early 1990s before rheumatoid arthritis and alcohol abuse derailed her on-screen career, opens up about her life now as a stage actor and her life then as a sex symbol, spilling ALL the tea about former co-workers and more!

The whole interview is well worth a read, but real quick, let's run through some of the highlights that people can't stop talking about -- like Turner explaining how she first realized she was a sexual target back in her prime in the early 1980s (below):
"It took adjustment. You have to remember that my first big role was Body Heat, and after that I was a sexual target. I understood later, from Michael Douglas, that there was a competition between him and Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty about who would get me first. None of them did, by the by.
I don't like being thought of as a trophy. Let me tell you, when Jack and I were shooting Prizzi's Honor, a bunch of us went to his place up on Mulholland [Drive]. Jack said, knowing Warren's interest in me, "Why don't you call Warren and tell him I don't have a corkscrew." "Why?" "You'll see how fast he gets here." There was an unspoken assumption that women were property to be claimed. Another time I was at a dinner party and there was an empty chair next to Jack. I sat down in it and had a delightful time. After a while — because I was shooting the next day — I said I had to leave and drove back to the Chateau Marmont. I get there and the phone rings. It was Jack: "How could you do that to me?" "Do what?" "You were my date and you left!" And I said, "I was your date? No one informed me." Assumptions like that are why I've never lived in Los Angeles. Every time I go to that city I feel insecure."
Wow!!!

Beyond Douglas, Beatty, and Nicholson -- a trio whom she does admit fondness for later in the interview -- Turner reveals some interesting things about Nicolas Cage working on set, as well.
Here she is (question and answer) on Cage's infamously weird voice choice in Peggy Sue Got Married (below):
I have another question about actors and their choices: When you show up on set, like you did for Peggy Sue Got Married, and realize that Nicolas Cage has decided to play his part with such an unusual voice — that he was doing a thing — how did that affect how you calibrated your performance?
"It was tough to not say, "Cut it out." But it wasn't my job to say to another actor what he should or shouldn't do. So I went to [director] Francis [Ford Coppola]. I asked him, "You approved this choice?" It was very touchy. He [Nicolas Cage] was very difficult on set. But the director allowed what Nicolas wanted to do with his role, so I wasn't in a position to do much except play with what I'd been given. If anything, it [Cage's portrayal] only further illustrated my character's disillusionment with the past. The way I saw it was, yeah, he was that asshole."
Sorry, Nicolas Cage or his character?
"Listen, I made it work, honey."
DAMN!!!!
Sorry, Nic!

He wasn't the only person Turner opted to toss shade at, though!
How about Donald Trump (below):
This is a sort of left-field question, but President Trump seems like someone you would've bumped into at a party in New York in the '80s. Have you ever met him?
"Yes. Yuck. He has this gross handshake."
What's he do?
"He goes to shake your hand and with his index finger kind of rubs the inside of your wrist. He's trying to do some kind of seductive intimacy move. You pull your hand away and go yuck."
Ugh....
She also throws major shade at the cast of Friends after guest-starring as Chandler Bing's gay drag-queen father for several episodes during the sitcom's long run (below):
You've done a handful of television. To pick one show you guest-starred on: What stands out about your experience onFriends?
"I'll be quite honest, which is my wont: I didn't feel very welcomed by the cast. I remember I was wearing this difficult sequined gown — and my high heels were absolutely killing me. I found it odd that none of the actors thought to offer me a seat. Finally it was one of the older crew members that said, "Get Miss Turner a chair." The Friends actors were such a clique — but I don't think my experience with them was unique. I think it was simply that they were such a tight little group that nobody from the outside mattered."
How did you find them as actors and actresses?
"I won't comment on that."
That's where you draw a line?
"[Laughs.] Maybe if I'd had months to work with them, I'd be in a better position to evaluate their skill. But I could only judge based on the period I worked on the show, which wasn't long. I do respect the camaraderie they had. You can see camaraderie on the screen. When I did Body Heat with Larry Kasdan and Bill Hurt, we rehearsed significantly before shooting and there was a familiarity before the camera rolled. You see it in the film."
Not holding back much!!!
