New Post has been published on Harold Gross: The 5a.m. Critic
New Post has been published on http://literaryends.com/hgblog/the-power-citadel-two-amazon-misses-ish/
The Power & Citadel (Two Amazon Misses-ish)
[3 stars]
Sometimes ideas are better than their shows. Amazon recently added two to its arsenal that were just good enough to watch, but more than a little flawed in their delivery. In the case of The Power, the story and implications overrode the flaws by a narrow margin. In the case of Citadel… not as much.
The Power
While the better of these two shows by far, this is not a subtle show on any level. It’s an in-your-face physical metaphor for female empowerment, and often the lack of it. It borders on revenge fantasy, but given the state of the world I can’t really blame Naomi Alderman (Disobedience) for this self-adaptation of her book. It’s a wide-eyed reminder of reality viewed on a global scale.
The problem with the lack of subtlety is that it often slips into arch presentation which diminishes the point and credibility. While that may work in a book, it is less effective on screen (large or small). The show may continue on in another season to be something more like a reverse mirror of Handmaid’s Tale. However, at the moment, even with a solid cast, it’s simply teeth-grindingly written at times. Not just in the dialogue, but also the forced character choices.
I didn’t know the book going in. And though the blurb was intriguing, it was the cast that initially got my attention. Toni Collette (Nightmare Alley) top lines this ensemble. The other main points of contact are Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso), Ria Zmitrowicz (Teen Spirit), Zrinka Cvitesic,  and new-comer and tightly controlled Halle Bush. Each very different facets of the world and issues for women.
On the male side, Eddie Marsan (Vesper), John Leguizamo (Violent Night), and Josh Charles (Away) each bring different aspects of toxic masculinity, even while some are also “supportive.” Again, none of this is subtle, but also little is unfair or untrue at the core.
But that is, again, part of the problem. If you’re going to bring a problem to the screen that you want people to learn from or feel empowered by, you have to give them something more than what they already know to rally around. In The Power it is literally the “power” made manifest. But it’s just too obvious for a series…at least as stretched out over so many long episodes that turn out only to be prelude to the more interesting tale to come. I’d definitely come back to see if the story can be nurtured into something more, but this initial season had a little too little progression, despite its scope.
Citadel
The Citadel, on the other hand, tries way too hard to be clever and ends up being ridiculous. It’s purpose as a show, we find out at the end, is really to set up an anthology of series, each from different operatives in some way. I can’t say I’m all that intrigued as the writing was painful, even if found all the Brits and Aussies and Kiwis doing solid American accents entertaining.
I will say, though they weren’t well used, they did land a great cast for the inaugural story. From Stanley Tucci (Jolt), Richard Madden (1917), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Baywatch), and Lesley Manville (Magpie Murders) in the main driving roles to Miss Fisher alumn Ashleigh Cummings in a solid supporting role, no one wasn’t working hard. But the script and direction did none of them any favors.
The story itself is a clever idea, and the writers try to cover over the silly aspects of it as best they can. But it swings wildly between action and absurd with very smart people making very stupid choices. And the world itself is rife with contradictions of facts that are presented to us at different times. I will grant the show that it often didn’t take the easy route for solutions at least.
Basically, watch for the action and, should it attract you, the romance. Don’t expect brilliance, at least in this opening entry to the anthology. Whether they can save this or offer something better, only time will tell.

Pamela Anderson says she didn’t like Priyanka Chopra’s Baywatch film: ‘Let bad TV be bad TV’ - hollywood
https://liveindiatimes.com/pamela-anderson-says-she-didnt-like-priyanka-chopras-baywatch-film-let-bad-tv-be-bad-tv-hollywood/
Baywatch alum Pamela Anderson has admitted that she “didn’t like” the film adaptation of her popular 1990s TV series. The actor played CJ Parker in the hit TV show, about lifeguards who patrol the beaches of Los Angeles County, California and Hawaii. The film version featured Priyanka Chopra as the villain.
Anderson, who had a cameo appearance along with former Baywatch co-star David Hasselhoff in the 2017 movie, made the revelation on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen.
youtube
“I didn’t like it,” she said when asked about the big screen adaptation, fronted by Dwayne Johnson. “Let’s just keep the bad TV as bad TV. That’s what’s charming about Baywatch, you know? Trying to make these movies out of television is just messing with it,” she added.
The 52-year-old actor-model also said the filmmakers went overboard with the budget. “$65 million would make a good movie. We made our show for like $500,000 – you have the same explosions, the same sequences of water. That’s the fun part; being creative,” she said.

Baywatch, the film, also featured Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario and Kelly Rohrbach, who played Anderson’s character. The movie was a box office hit, but received unfavourable reviews from critics.

“Baywatch” (2017)
Action/Comedy
Running Time: 116 minutes
Written by: Mark Swift & Damian Shannon
Directed by: Seth Gordon
Featuring:  Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Priyanka Chopra, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach, Jon Bass and Ilfenesh Hadera
Mitch Buchannon: “Welcome to Baywatch. Our team is the elite of the elite. We’re the heart and soul of this very beach. We protect when other people don’t want to protect, and we go above and beyond.”
The assault on the idea concept of comedy in movies continues with the release of the remake or reboot or whatever you want call this comedy abomination that is “Baywatch” (2017) out this week on DVD & Blu-ray.
Now I wouldn’t have said this movie was doomed from its announcement, especially with the early word that Dwayne Johnson was involved, someone who is not afraid to laugh at himself as well as carry a movie that needs some very big shoulders to support it. Its unfortunate then that the studio that released this, Paramount, decided to stick Johnson with a director as well as screenwriters that seem to have no clue to what they are working on. They also seem to have no idea on how to use their secret weapon, who is normally a charmer as well as someone who can deliver almost any kind of dialogue all while inviting the audience to come with him on some kind of journey – here however none of that works, so we have what must be one of the worst movies of the year so far, along with many other comedies that have missed the mark by a mile.
The movie starts out in Emerald Bay, Florida, Lt. Mitch Buchannon and his team of lifeguards, including second-in-commmand Stephanie Holden and veteran C. J. Parker, protect the beaches and the bay as part of an elite division known as Baywatch. Having made over 500 rescues in his career, Mitch is beloved by the community, to the annoyance of local beat cop Garner Ellerbee and Mitch’s superior, Captain Thorpe.
At the upcoming tryouts for new lifeguards, three people stand out: surfer Summer Quinn, an old friend of Holden’s, Ronnie, a chubby nerd with a crush on C. J. (that is gradually returned), and Matt Brody, a former Olympic swimmer who fell from grace after vomiting during a race and now has to perform community service as part of an unspecified plea deal. Quinn and Ronnie both pass the trials, but Brody refuses to do so and insists that his celebrity status alone entitles him to a place on the team. Despite Brody demonstrating his abilities by assisting in the rescue of a drowning woman and her son, Mitch complains to Thorpe that he is unfit. Thorpe, in turn, insists that rehabilitating his image is necessary to convince the city not to further cut Baywatch’s funding.
From here the plot if you could call it that becomes needlessly complicated as well as extremely crass, as it stands for no really good reason.
I have complained about the lack of good comedies that have been released this year, and “Baywatch” has to top the list of not only being humourless, but it even manages to mishandle the action elements that may have saved this from being extremely tiresome to watch – I watched this at home and found myself hoping for the end to come, it meandered from one tireless set up to the next without seeming to go anywhere at all. My feeling was that no-one really committed to a genre so each aspect of this movie is underwhelming.
Normally any movie, especially one that relies on personality or has to because the plot is absent, that has at its center Dwayne Johnson, is already ahead because he is just so charismatic as well as being able to make fun of himself means that he can be on the audiences side as well as being in on the joke. One need only look at the “Fast and Furious” franchise to see he is one of the only actors actually hamming it up, making those dreadful movies bearable for those of us that like the over the top nature that is inherent within those movies. “Baywatch” the movie, has not earned that so we are just looking at Johnson as part of this film not apart from it. The supporting cast is made up of both experienced as well as newish actors that all come off as one note and not appealing at all. So we have Alexandra Daddario, Zac Efron and Priyanka Chopra struggling with a plot as well as trope filled exposition while appearing alongside newbies Kelly Rohrbach, Jon Bass and Ilfenesh Hadera really not coming to terms with the kind of movie they are in as well as having very little actual screen presence.
The argument could be made that there was a similar situation with the original television show with some experienced actors as well as some very average novice actors. My argument against that, as well as illustrating the superiority of the television version is that it was a different time, 1989 to 1999, the show knew exactly what it was and the talent in front of the camera was vastly superior to the people we have now. Here is some of the talent involved in the series and its an easy argument with time on our side that these actors have at least more talent as well as huge screen presence than that of this poorly attempted translation, we have of course David Hasselhoff, Parker Stevenson, Billy Warlock, David Chavert, Alexandra Paul, Erika Eleniak, Pamela Stevenson and many many others. If there was a small percentage of their presence in this movie it would have been a far better watch.
Its not only in front of the camera where mistakes have been made, the writers (which is a generous title), Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, have only had two somewhat other successes, if they could be called that, which were the middling horror re-imagining (I am being kind) “Friday the 13th” (2009) and “Freddy vs. Jason” (2003). Both of these movies are genre pieces and are just updating other people’s work, which may have been the appeal here, but sadly there is nothing they have added to “Baywatch” to even make it remotely interesting. So it is here where the director should make some decisions to enhance what is a lackluster script, but this is where the inexperience of Seth Gordon shows. Sure he had a hit with “Horrible Bosses” (2011) but misfired with “Identity Thief” (2013) then in between has directed a lot of comedy televison which means he was trying to learn how to direct narrative on the fly, which again shows here in this movie, where he was probably stuck between his script his producers as well as his actors – I am not envious because what we have been left with is a mess of a film both narratively as well as plot wise with an inconsistent tone as well as a R-rating slapped on to make it seem edgy – which it is not.
The filmmakers needed to pick a tone and style then follow through on that, I can see why they chose some kind of action/comedy route, which worked well with the redo and big screen adaptation of the hit “Starsky and Hutch” (2009) but there you had writers, a director and most importantly stars who could handle the material and knew not only what they were doing but also what they were doing. This is yet another misfire from the studio Paramount who have not been able to buy a hit this year and the slate for the rest of the year looks dire as well.
This is definitely not worth a purchase and to be honest even if you could watch this free it is unlikely you would enjoy it; in fact if you watched it on a plane you would not be forgiven for walking out.
“Baywatch” is out on DVD & blu-ray now.

Priyanka Chopra & Barry Levinson To Adapt Netflix’s ‘Wild Wild Country’ As A Feature Film
Priyanka Chopra is one of the biggest superstars in the world. Primarily known worldwide for her Bollywood roles, the actress has yet to fully break out in the US. She’s starred in the short-lived series “Quantico” and had a fairly forgettable role as the villain in “Baywatch.” And while she co-stars in the Rebel Wilson comedy “Isn’t It Romantic?” it would appear that her true star-making turn might be in a feature film adaptation of a recent hit Netflix docu-series.

Baywatch (2017)
Tumblr media
Another 70’s television series gets an R-Rated film adaptation and once again, it means a parade of sophomoric jokes, a lame story, and few laughs. At least Baywatch features a lot of beautiful bodies for you to look at!
Florida’s Emerald Bay Baywatch program is about more than just saving people from drowning, as new recruits Matt Brody (Zac Efron), Ronnie (Jon Bass) and Summer (Alexandra Daddario) find out. When Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) begins to suspect that local entrepreneur Victoria Leeds (Priyanka Chopra) is selling drugs out of her club, he, the recruits, and veterans C.J. (Kelly Rohrbach) and Stephanie (Ilfenesh Hadera) are on the case.
Baywatch is fully aware of its ridiculous premise. The semi-serious series has been reimagined as a comedy. Unfortunately, it contains far more soft chuckles than genuine rib-ticklers. Showing a penis and bad chest hair is not a real joke! Funny dances aren't either. It's so lame and contrived I was shocked.
You’ve got a dynamite cast. Effron and Johnson ooze charisma and have been funny in the past. The other actors/actresses are also good in their roles. It doesn’t hurt that everyone (well, except for Jon Bass, sorry dude) look very, very good in bathing suits. The film features no mouth-watering nudity, but the butts, stomachs, chests and cleavage are enough. Any more and you'd explode. If only the story was worthwhile...
The plot of Baywatch is an afterthought, a generic string of events that could’ve been applied to ANY TV show given the big screen treatment. Yes, it’s a comedy, but the situations are so badly set up, particularly during the end, that they make no sense. Apparently, Florida only employs a single police officer. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II appears in a few scenes to reprimand our dim-witted, disorganized heroes but isn’t called when they are actually threatened with immediate danger. At many points, it feels as though Baywatch is banking on the audience forgetting what happened in the previous scene. Just a few minutes ago we saw Summer use her phone to record evidence for the police. Why isn’t Mitch smart enough to follow suit? When you’re not correctly predicting in advance which character will turn out to be involved in the sinister business, you’ll be wondering what Victoria’s plan actually was had anyone around her displayed any brainpower.
With a different cast, Baywatch would’ve been an absolute chore to watch. As is, it’s merely a disappointment; squandered potential considering the cast which, play well off each other, exhibit a lot of charm and are genuine funny when given strong material. Keep an eye out for some winks directed at fans of the original show (including a “cameo” by Spongebob Squarepants) and some bloopers during the credits should you decide to see the film nonetheless. (Theatrical version on the big screen, May 27, 2017)

‘Baywatch’ Lifeguard Alexandra Daddario Used Duct Tape to Avoid a Fashion Emergency
yahoo
Thanks to her longtime devotion to hot yoga, which helps her deal with anxiety and sleep issues, Alexandra Daddario thought she was ready for her close-up when she was cast as a lifeguard in the film adaptation of Baywatch.
Tumblr media
Alexandra Daddario, who stars in the upcoming Baywatch film, visits Yahoo! (Photo: Casey Hollister)
“To do this, I thought I was in great shape,” she tells Yahoo Style.
Spoiler alert: She had major work to do. She started training with co-star Zac Efron’s fitness guru, which was body-changing. It entailed weights, TRX straps, resistance bands, and sweating at the gym up to five days a week.
“It was hard, and the more I did it, the more changes I saw in my body, the better I felt,” she says. “I had real abs. I’ve always been thin. I’m very lucky that I never had a weight issue, but I wasn’t strong. Now I had actual muscles for the first time in my life.”
Which meant that the first time she pulled on her Baywatch suit, she felt fantastic. “I had worked really hard to get where I was, so it was fun. It was a cool thing,” she says.
For her, but not for everyone.
“When I was younger, you struggle with what you look like, your confidence,” she says. “I found a place of confidence in my life. We all are gorgeous in our own ways. Just do you. If you don’t want to wear a bikini, then don’t.”
Tumblr media
Alexandra Daddario In Baywatch. (Photo: Everett Collection)
Daddario was born and grew up in New York City, and got her big break playing Annabeth Chase, the daughter of the goddess Athena, in the Percy Jackson films; and Blake Gaines, the daughter of the rescue helicopter pilot played by Dwayne Johnson, in San Andreas. Baywatch is her second film with the Rock, and San Andreas 2 is in the works for next year. “That would be my third movie with the Rock. That’s the coolest thing ever. That’s something you have something written on your tombstone. He’s completely genuine and honest.”
And she knows how to yuck it up in Baywatch, a star-studded comedy featuring the Rock, Efron, and Priyanka Chopra in co-lead roles. “Part of the joke is that all the characters are supernaturally good-looking and take their jobs way too seriously. It was equal-opportunity hotness. Caricatures of dumb women — that’s not funny.”
To hear Daddario tell it, the same applies to the entire cast. She especially bonded with the ladies, including fellow lifeguards Ilfenesh Hadera and Kelly Rohrbach. Lo and behold, there was not a single spat.
“I love them so much, truly, as people, as role models, as women,” she says. “It’s such a cliché: cat-fighting, jealous women. I’ve found it to be completely not the case. I’ve found there to be more ego battles among men. In this cast, everyone was fantastic, boys and girls.”
Tumblr media

She’s also finding her fashion footing, wearing silver Azzaro Couture to the film’s world premiere, donning a leg-baring Alberta Ferretti look for the MTV Awards, and stepping out in an ultrasexy Vivienne Westwood frock to the Billboard Music Awards.
On that last look, Daddario spills some dressing details. “I turned the skirt around. I duct-taped myself in. My boobs are normal. They sag a little bit and you need to lift them up. I was terrified that the whole situation would come apart,” she says. “I’m trying different things. I like to do things that are fun and colorful and not necessarily that tight-fitting.”
Tumblr media

If Daddario seems centered, it’s because she is. Once she hit her 30s, she connected with her true self and started to know herself better. She started to do yoga, to meditate, “because I want to have a nice boyfriend and a nice career.”
Speaking of romance, she plays Zac Efron’s life interest in the comedy. And of course, that’s launched countless rumors that the two are dating. For the record, the stories are just that.
“It’s not annoying. I understand why people think that. We’re very good friends. It’s nice to think that I used to be very nerdy and I’m cool enough to be dating Zac Efron,” says Daddario. “Zac Efron is never the kind of guy I would have gotten in high school.”

Priyanka Chopra remembers the time when she made a mistake at Miss World pageant and yet went on to win – watch video
Priyanka Chopra shot to fame when she was crowned Miss World in 2000. Now, she is an international star thanks to the success of Quantico. The west is crazy about her, and the fact that most of the reviews of Baywatch have only praised her says a lot for the notion. The process of global domination…
